Thanks. Topaz is my favourite gem. I think if cut currently it's as good as a diamond. At some point with the limit of quality Topaz around it will go up in price. In recent years buying quality rough Topaz has gone up in price. Cheers

Excellent Portoguese cut! This despite the small size of the stone. I have two questions: 1.) What kind of polishing agent are you using on the plexi glass lap. 2.) For fine cutting (3000grit), don't you need to check each single facet for the correct depth of cut, or is your faceting arm that accurate that you just rely on the adjusted stop angle?

Gem Works With the 3000 diamond lap I cut each facet to depth by using a loupe particularly on a small gem. It doesn't take long and the aim is to create perfect meet points. I don't rely on any form of depth gauges or led read out. All my faceting is based on sight and sound and hand pressure. I just use a standard 14, 000 and 50,000 diamond paste that you can buy on the net or gem dealers. Once I've prepolished the first facet in each row under loupe to establish the prepolished depth I'm pretty confident that every other facet just needs a few light swipes to get them prepolished. So many cutters like yourself use aluminum cast faceting heads (facetrons etc) which is light and has flex. Very few Australians facetors never buy or use facetrons. All Australian made machines use heavier guage alloys often cast which zero flex and better accuracy. This also means you can cut very large gems without putting stress on the faceting head. All of my Aussie faceting colleagues never use depth guages or any form of read out. The height adjuster on the mast should be your depth guage. One full rotation should equal 1mm. I don't even look at that when I cut. I lower or raise accordingly.
Vintage Time Thanks for your explanations. I use a 10x loupe with the fine lap too, in order to get the meet points right. For the coarser laps I do indeed use a dial gauge and touch sensor, which works well for me. The flex of the faceting however in my opinion is rather the stability of the mast mounting and the joints, not so much if it is aluminium or steel. But I agree that having a more stable head is definitely advantageous. - But thanks for your explanations and once more for your great videos!
It's interesting watching gem cutters on the facetrons cut huge gems. Notice how they have to push hard on the stone to cut. This is a sure sign that the motor is too light to handle such large gems even on the large laps they use. My motor is quite large in comparison, so I don't to use such force, as the motor can handle the weight. One tip I can advise on, is use a motor that will not overheat and has plenty of grunt to cut larger gems else you will put too much stress on the faceting head. Also, a heavier head has greater downward gravity force, so you really don't have to use much pressure particularly on small gems as the weight of the quill and arm creates enough downward pressure. With the stop/lock nut you can control the downward weight also. With your engineering ability you should be able to build the perfect machine. I find the girdle the trickiest part of the entire cutting process. You have a good faceting technique as your not rough, as some facetors on youtube are pretty rough. I'm still working hard to refine the perfect technique by using less hand pressure as the years go by. But sometimes it's difficult, as there are times with certain gems and designs you just want to finish off the project. There can be a tendency to rush ( which is never good)......Cheers

I prepolish my girdles, but I don't usually polish them with oxide or 60k+ diamond, mainly because my DarkSide lap starts behaving very alarmingly along the thin edges.

Could you make a video of getting the maximum yield out of rough? Is it possible to get 50% yield from rough?
Benji Not ever likely. The rough would have to be perfect. Also you would be cutting very shallow facets as they do in Asia that follows the shape of the rough and it simply would not sparkle and reflect light. You may as well keep the rough gem as is. What people don't understand in cutting any piece rough gem is that you can encounter all sorts of issues during the process of cutting that can effect the outcome of the yield.
How to the Asia cutters calculate their facets? I have a few pieces of ruby rough around 5 carats( I would like to get 2 carats cut) But if i follow faceting diagrams I will only end up with around 1.5 carats or less.
Benji Sounds right that your getting the right carat weight. If you want more carat weight follow the outline of the pavilion with shallow digrees on your protractor. The gem will not sparkle though.

This is nonsense repeated by a lot of youtubers. The bell icon is to give notifications of new videos, it is not to "be able to watch videos" and has nothing to do with ensuring the video shows up in your ruclips.net/user/feedsubscriptions page. Just say "hit the bell icon to get notified" or something like that. I'm subscribed to 100s of channels and getting spammed with notifications of every new video would be pointless.
That's right it is to notify people of future videos. I write that down in the description. It used to be you would be spammed just to be a subscriber. Now if people want to see the latest video they can hit the bell icon. I don't post daily so those subscribers who really enjoy my channel can simply hit the bell icon to receive notifications. For those who wish just to visit whenever they can simply do a random check of my channel. Many subscribers are unaware that youtube have changed that's why so many channels inform their subs. I think it's a good idea. I'm subscribed to channels also, the channels that I regularly want to see I click the bell icon as I don't want to miss the latest posts...
