  • Day 7 Dog Training Challenge: Go Around
    (Trainer Alex)
Today we're going to show you a super fun behavior that has practical implications as well.
We're going to be teaching your dog to go around a specific object - essentially, sending them away to a set point in the distance and having them return back to you.
Your hands are really important in this exercise. Once we start fading out the hand signal, notice that my hands aren't giving anything away to the dog. He really needs to hear and recognize that verbal cue.
There are a million ways you can use this behavior, but since we only have 14 days here, for us it's going to simply be an excellent exercise in getting your dog to focus on you and return back to you. If you do agility, you may find it helpful there as well!
Once your dog is fluent, you can start practicing this with increasing distractions around.
    Level Up: "Again"
One of the keys to having a dog that gets rewarded with food but doesn't NEED food to perform the behavior is to not reward every single time. Once your dog knows something, we need to start reward it intermittently.
So this exercise is both for you and your dog. We're going to give them a second cue "again" that means you want them to circle the object again.
You will still sometimes reward that first "go around," but will sometimes be asking them to go "again" and only rewarding after the second (or third, fourth, etc) rotation.
It is SO fun to watch your dog figure this out! Be sure to watch and follow the steps carefully to ensure no one gets confused.
If you want to really advance this over a few weeks of training, you can actually generalize "again" for your dog so that it means "again" for any behavior you're working on. You will need to do the exact process we used for go around/again for 3-5 diferent behaviors, and your dog will learn the CONCEPT of "again." Amazing, right?

Best video on teaching this; can’t believe there’s so little feedback. Trying to work up to go around- for-a-tug, a combination I saw that supposed to tire them out physically and mentally. But he totally skipped the teaching phase! Thanks sm from a dog noob
