Say, Persona 5 is more about the opposition between the society and the individual, how one can get rejected by the society and has to exist outside of it, about masked heroes and villains and how to deal with the evil sides of the world. One of my not only favorite P5 songs but of all time. I felt like i listened to this song before and that it meant something special to me and it just came back to my life.
I absolutely love this song. It's keeps getting stuck in my head after I play Persona 5 Royal. Idk about the original Persona 5 but in Royal this is one of the main songs that play, it isn't cutscene music. So it'll play usually once you get back to LeBlanc at the evening and you walking around the city at night. It's such a perfect song. Sometimes the game alternates between the instrumental and the one with vocals. But yeah I agree man its such a beautiful and jazzy song. It sucks that no one I work with knows about this franchise and have never played the game.
I have a playlist of like 15 different remixes of this song, its just such a good one to have on the background. Oh btw that song is usually played in a coffee shop which works as your homebase too in the game, to add to the lofi sort of feeling XD
This was so beautifully chill and your "Please don't tell me it's soon over" hit it right on the nail :D Hmm ... I'd put the song ... maybe in a introduction cutscene of the characters. Like cutting from one to the next with their daily life before whatever goes down in the game?
"Nothing sounds like Persona!" Bro, you want to be *really* confused by Persona songs, go listen to Burn My Dread from Persona 3. Each game has its own motif, both in narrative theme and musical, with 3 being more hip-hop influenced, 4 is more pop, and 5 is pure jazz. As for where this plays... beneath the gap... ...This is the theme of just wandering around Tokyo shooting the shit. Going to stores, grabbing a bite of food with friends, this is just what happens as you chill between dungeon crawls. The crazy thing is that there's a rainy day version that's even more chill. And it's so relaxing a groove. It's just so cozy and relaxing. Something I could listen to all day on loop curled up with a good book or something. ruclips.net/video/FQwDBvHobh4/видео.html
Maybe its been said already here, but the way Persona as a series delivers upon its music is just such a vibe. After finishing whatever you did during the daytime sections, whether it was in fierce battle against otherworldly beings or just hanging out with a friend, you always return home to your cozy loft above a coffee/curry shop. This track plays, but without the vocals. Everything is instrumental starting out. Eventually, the person serving as your guardian while staying there trusts you enough to let you go out after dark despite being on probation. That's when the vocals come in, giving the sense of life out in the dark city. Add to it, during evenings where it's raining, the instrumentals almost entirely drop out, just leaving the vocals and maybe one tone in the background. Persona has some fantastic music, which I'm glad people recognize. But the way they layer the music into what's happening around you, the atmosphere of the scenes, and how they build towards changes in your life throughout the games is such an amazing show of artistry. Acid jazz and funky beats are great, but in a video game, knowing when to lean into them is way more important than people give credit for.
For those who want a longer version of it, or are interested by Jesse's take on "life lessons" in there, check out the Metagroove album by J-Music Ensemble. There's a longer and more dynamic version of this song there, as well as a lot of jazz fusion in the album as a whole.
Persona 5 just oozes style from every conceivable place. Even the menus were stylish af. Which makes me very curious about theming for 6. Where will they go next, musically, thematically... and what colour will it be?
Persona games have 2 modes of play that you switch back and forth between: the normal life stuff like school and study, and the action and combat portions. This song plays in the former section, specifically it plays the most while you're in the chill coffee shop that is your home during the game.
This is one of the most comfy and chill themes out there, absolutely love it. If we're talking slow themes, I've got a couple to recommend off the top of my head from Octopath Traveler: My Quiet Forest Home, and Town Veiled in White. Cheers Jesse
As a Poe fan myself, the lyrics are what talks to my soul. And all the verses have some line that is different. Here are the lyrics, I marked the "chorus" that as you can see is like in the start of the second verse: Where have you been? Been searching all along Came facing twilight on and on Without a clue Without a sign Without grasping yet The real question to be asked Where have I been? _I'm a shape shifter_ _At Poe's masquerade_ _Hiding both face and mind_ _All free for you to draw_ _I'm a shape shifter_ What else should I be? Please don't take off my mask Revealing dark Moments of calm Nothing left to be found A mirror right in front of me That's where I find An empty glass Reflecting the sad truth It's telling words not to be told I need the mask _I'm a shape shifter_ _At Poe's masquerade_ _Hiding both face and mind_ _All free for you to draw_ _I'm a shape shifter_ Chained down to my core Please don't take off my mask My place to hide I can't tell you How to see me Just a cage of bones There's nothing inside Will it unleash me? Burning down the walls Is there a way For me to break? _I'm a shape shifter_ _At Poe's masquerade_ _Hiding both face and mind_ _All free for you to draw_ _I'm a shape shifter_ Have no face to show Please don't take off my mask My disguise
the fact that the music is all in the jazz umbrella but every song is such a different type of jazz. and bonus p5 royal has a jaz club for you to enjoy lol
This song plays in the game when roaming around the city at night time. During day time, there is another version of the song that is the same but instead of vocals, it's an electric organ. When it's raining in the game, the respective song will play but with percussion and other things removed. Such a great song with a lot of variation.
Seeing as Persona games are really long, 1st playthroughs usually come in at around 180-210 hours, especially if youre doing most of the side content, these songs are usually amazing. 3 songs actually come to mind which bring back memories. 1- Iwatodai Dorm: Persona 3 FES 2- Heartbeat, Heartbreak: Persona 4 Golden 3- Beneath the Mask: Persona 5 Royal The sheer amount of time you hear these songs allows you to make a genuine connection with the game. Those moments of calm and thought while you figure out the schedule. Setting up for the next big fight, raising your social stats, spending time with friends. When these songs start your mind recreates the camera angles and actions you do every in game day. Its just an amazing feeling, especially for someone like me who hasnt played a Persona title in over 1.5 years, it makes me feel like I played it just yesterday.
Jesse, I know I’m really late on this one, but Smash Bros has a remix of this song. It’s SO SO GOOD, and I don’t think it’s AT ALL what you would expect, I give it my highest recommendation.
you NEED to listen and react to P5R's Gentle Madman OST. it's one of the best and biggest new tracks to the Royal version of the game. Throw Away Your Mask is also a second part to the theme (in terms of the boss they play on). I'd highly recommend doing. a double reaction to them.
Persona 5 - Beneath The Mask "Night walking scene" yeah, pretty much on the money. The Persona franchise beneath the glitz, the glam & fashion is about the exploration of what is the human condition...
BRO I fucking love telepopmusic and I thought of them when I first heard this track in game, that makes me so happy! The one I thought of though was "Breathe", which is my favorite track of theirs
At this point it's almost an offense you haven't done Last Surprise, looking forward to it. Watching you is like jamming with a friend, love your videos man, keep at it.
Glad to see a reaction of my favorite P5 track. It's funny you mentioned that Persona music feels like dancing. There's an spin-off series called Persona Dancing and those are rhythm games. I prefer the original versions but some Persona Dancing remixes are cool. The last three Persona games have really different music and Shouji Meguro composed all of them. Every Persona follows a different theme within jungian psychology, so the main genre of each OST and the color palette changes according to each game and its main topic. P3, P4 and P5's OST are different and within all those soundtracks you can also find different music (but there's a main genre in each OST). Shouji Meguro is amazing. Maybe my favorite composer right now. He has a wide range of music. In my opinion, P5 has the singer with the best english pronunciation and that helps a lot. P3 and P4 have amazing vocal tracks but there's a lot of engrish. I'm not a native speaker and even I think those songs sound weird. Lyn helps a lot to the immersion. When I listened to P3 and P4 voiced songs sometimes I got distracted trying to figure out the lyrics. There's another OST from Shouji Meguro I think is interesting: Catherine. Jazzy vibes (around 5 years before P5. There was a gap of almost 10 years between P4 and P5. Catherine was his work in the middle) and re-editions of classical pieces with modern music. Worth checking out. Glad to see patreons are suggesting something different. As much as I love Final Fantasy and NieR, there's a lot of cool music out there. Thanks for another great video!
'Poe's masquerade' is "The Masque of the Red Death." I spent a good while wondering how intentional that was, until a friend pointed out both "Masque" and P5 involve the rich elites trying to sequester themselves from the problems and suffering of the world at large, but those problems come for them anyway. Also, one of my favorite P5 music things involves one of the incidental songs (I'm not sure of the name since I mostly know it from gameplay). It's bright and cheery and there's lots of vocal scatting and it's a Grand Old Time. AND THEN you hit "Freedom and Security," the dungeon theme for the last (non-Royal) Palace... and it's a slowed-down, minor-key inversion of the scatting melody. Blew my mind when that hit me.
Hey if you're looking to check out Persona videos, the openings of the Persona games have fantastic themes. If not for the channel, then just to check out at your leisure!
Persona 5 is kind of split into two game styles. You have an over world area, which is the city you live in. That is where you level social links, progress certain parts of the main quest and side quests, things like that. The other half is in something akin to a dungeon. That is where you fight enemies and all that. This music plays like background over world music during night time, There is a 10 hour video for this song, with rain overlapped. It is as amazing as it sounds. ruclips.net/video/Uq7kyf1T_lk/видео.html if you ever need something to chill to.
don't know if any one has said it in this 100+ comment video, but this plays in your "home." You here this every day in the game and is played in a coffee shop. I love this song, as well as "No More What Ifs." Absolutely amazing music. That song means a lot to me. (edit 1) yes, this song does have a meaning. Very Powerful meaning
On the topic of each Persona having different themes and singers. That tradition started with Persona 3. Persona 3 is mainly rap, Persona 4 is pop and Persona 5 is jazz. There are songs that break this mold in each game but those are the main genres for each. They are all also associated with different colours such as blue for 3, yellow for 4 and red for 5 which makes the art for each very easy to distinguish
If you want another soft/lullaby song, I would love to recommend "Main Title Theme" from Xenoblade Chronicles! Love hearing your insight and fresh takes. Keep up the vids bud.
It should not surprise you after hearing this song that there are a number of "chill and study" mixes on RUclips for P5, and the various versions of Beneath the Mask figure prominently on them. As for where this song fits in, you need to understand that the Persona gameplay has two major sections: the action/RPG sections that take place in the more fantastical parts of the games, and the more "visual novel" style sections that happen in day-to-day life. Beneath the Mask is a song you hear primarily in the daily life sections, particularly at night or on rainy days.
Somehow Persona 5 music works to hype me up and be chill other times. And that both types of music are some of my favorite tracks from the game surprised me. Normally I like the upbeat tracks more
This song is usually played when exploring the city, in between the battles. When it rains, the drum beat is taken away giving the song a completely different tone. I'd definitely recommend listening to it, even if it's alone =]. Just search "Beneath the Mask - Rain"
If you do look up Persona 5 footage, keep in mind there are two very distinct "phases" of gameplay. One is where songs like this play and is made up of cutscenes, exploring and spending your day throughout the city, building relationships with other characters, stuff like that. And then there is the dungeon crawling with incredibly stylish JRPG battles. These are split up pretty evenly throughout the game, so you could end up watching two completely different things depending on what you watch. And yeah, there is a lot of deeper meaning to a lot of the song lyrics as well as the theme of the story. Every game has its own theme, color scheme, and musical style. It is pretty hard to explain briefly, but the "mask" here is both literal and metaphorical, as the dungeon crawling takes place in a world made up of the cognition of all living people, and in that world, the main characters all have their own masks they wear, and removing that mask is what helps to awaken their powers. There is quite a bit more to it that adds a lot more meaning behind it, but it is too hard to explain without going much further in-depth. But it also refers to the "mask" as in how one would present themselves in public or around others that might not be the same person as who you really are. So Beneath the Mask would be referring to the person you are when beneath the "mask" that you would wear at something like work or in public, if that makes sense? This also isn't the only song that refers to a mask in its title as there is another theme called "Throw Your Mask Away" that is actually a boss theme in Persona 5 Royal.
1:39 if you like that bass line, go listen to "Price" or "Whims of fate" which are two others soundtrack of the game- (price being one of my favorite of the entire ost) Not the same energy, but groovy as heck-
Even though it's short, I'd love to see your reaction to Persona 2's "Knights of the Holy Lance" theme. And then I'd love to see your reaction as you learn the context to the theme.
This is P5's famous rainy day track, when it rains or at night this one plays in one form or the other. U have to know, P5 is part turned based action fighting monsters called shadows, and the other part us u living a high school student life studying and hanging out with friends, where this one is from. All in all, if u ever have time, just play the game, the music fits in so well with the gameplay that that alone makes it a masterpiece.
6:56 You're right about that part. Persona games tend to focus on certain aspects of life or society. Other examples are: P3: Life and death. P4: Truth and falsehood.
There is also a rain version of this song. not that rain js in the background but a remix that only plays on in game rainy days. And it's even more chill than this version
If you ever have the time to do so, I Highly recommend you try playing Persona 5 for yourself, the game is absolutely phenomenal. Also if you do decide to play it, consider streaming or uploading your play through to RUclips, I’d love to see your reactions to the game and I’m sure others would as well
Hello, Jesse. I have a request for you. I'm pretty sure that you already have a request for Colors flying high from Persona 5. Still worth mentioning, though. But my actual request is Wolen storm from The Witcher 3. Preferably in game cutscene. You can miss out on context but song is very beautiful on itself.
Play it. Persona 5 is actually a masterpiece. Atmosphere, music, story, characters, everything is top tier. It is quite long though, decent play through taking your time can take 100+ hours.
Yeah dude go for it. In my opinion it's the best/most under-appreciated relative to its quality JRPG on the PS4. It's definitely not a typical JRPG tho, and has a niche for sure.
Do it. It has things I'd nitpick, both in vanilla and royal versions, but as a whole it's more weighted to the positive side. And don't take my saying I have nitpicks too seriously - I mean I did get the platinum in both versions and strikers and the dancing game and have all collectors versions so... there you go. I'm even harsh on stuff I enjoy. And tbh, I like my fair share of stuff that's trash too lol
"I'm a shapeshifter at Poe's Masquerade". Poe's Masquerade refers to the Masque of the Red Death, a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe. It tells the tale of Prince Prospero who hides in his sealed abbey to avoid a dangerous plague, the Red Death. The abbey contains seven rooms, each decorated with a different colour. And also contains a host of wealthy nobles. They hold a masquerade ball, but in the midst of the revelry, a mysterious figure dressed in funeral garb with a mask exhibiting signs of the plague, appears. It goes through the seven rooms of the abbey. The nobles, afraid of the figure, let it pass through until it reaches the final room, which is decorated in a "deep blood colour". Prospero pursues it through the rooms, and upon reaching the final room, the figure turns to face him. He lets out a cry, and falls dead. Other guests surge into the room and forcibly remove the mask and clothes of the figure, but they find nothing underneath. And one by one they fall dead to the plague. And I just spoiled most of the plot of Persona 5 in a roundabout way. You're welcome. This isn't a cutscene song. It plays during the nighttime ingame. There's actually ANOTHER version of this song in the game's soundtrack that plays when it rains ingame. It's divine. Just watch a playthrough, or even just a bunch of trailers man. Alright new series time, "Reacting to Video Game Trailers", where Jessie reacts to trailers of games that he's curious of because he previously reacted to the music.
The "Mask" motif is about an idea that every person have two types of masks: one they show the world and the other they keep for themselves - their true self (without the mask). Wearing a mask is a type of persona (hence the name of the video game), it's about how you are perceived by society (how you look wearing a mask) and who you are really (how you look without any mask).

@@zayne50 Never had any Playstation console :(
"Nothing sounds like Persona!" Bro, you want to be *really* confused by Persona songs, go listen to Burn My Dread from Persona 3.
"Throw Away Your Mask" is a really good Persona 5 one. Plays during the final battle of the game. Highly recommend!
A year ago, i had trouble sleeping. This song on loop really helps me sleep at night, chill af i swear man.
This is a powerfully chill song and I love it. This on repeat in a warm room on a rainy day is just comfort.
Persona 5 just oozes style from every conceivable place. Even the menus were stylish af. Which makes me very curious about theming for 6. Where will they go next, musically, thematically... and what colour will it be?
P3 was Blue, P4 was Yellow, P5 was Red. clearly P6 will be Green
Here are the lyrics, I marked the "chorus" that as you can see is like in the start of the second verse:
Where have you been?
Been searching all along
Came facing twilight on and on
Without a clue
Without a sign
Without grasping yet
The real question to be asked
Where have I been?
_I'm a shape shifter_
_At Poe's masquerade_
_Hiding both face and mind_
_All free for you to draw_
_I'm a shape shifter_
What else should I be?
Please don't take off my mask
Revealing dark
Moments of calm
Nothing left to be found
A mirror right in front of me
That's where I find
An empty glass
Reflecting the sad truth
It's telling words not to be told
I need the mask
_I'm a shape shifter_
_At Poe's masquerade_
_Hiding both face and mind_
_All free for you to draw_
_I'm a shape shifter_
Chained down to my core
Please don't take off my mask
My place to hide
I can't tell you
How to see me
Just a cage of bones
There's nothing inside
Will it unleash me?
Burning down the walls
Is there a way
For me to break?
_I'm a shape shifter_
_At Poe's masquerade_
_Hiding both face and mind_
_All free for you to draw_
_I'm a shape shifter_
Have no face to show
Please don't take off my mask
My disguise
There’s a variation of this song for when it’s raining, and I absolutely adore that version.
Late but the instrumental will play in the background during gameplay
One of my absolute favourites to listen to when out on a walk in the rain, especially at night.
the Bass gives me AudioSlave VIBEs~!!
2:00 "this one is flavorful" like a plate of curry and a cup of expertly-roasted coffee
the fact that the music is all in the jazz umbrella but every song is such a different type of jazz. and bonus p5 royal has a jaz club for you to enjoy lol
This song plays in the game when roaming around the city at night time. During day time, there is another version of the song that is the same but instead of vocals, it's an electric organ. When it's raining in the game, the respective song will play but with percussion and other things removed.
Such a great song with a lot of variation.
I really wanna see Jesse play Persona. I feel like he'd go so hard
Seeing as Persona games are really long, 1st playthroughs usually come in at around 180-210 hours, especially if youre doing most of the side content, these songs are usually amazing.
3 songs actually come to mind which bring back memories.
1- Iwatodai Dorm: Persona 3 FES
2- Heartbeat, Heartbreak: Persona 4 Golden
3- Beneath the Mask: Persona 5 Royal
The sheer amount of time you hear these songs allows you to make a genuine connection with the game.
I have this one set as my alarm since it came out, so chill (actually the Rain version of the song)
persona is one of my favorite series. right up there with SMT and devil summoner
Persona 5 - Beneath The Mask "Night walking scene" yeah, pretty much on the money. The Persona franchise beneath the glitz, the glam & fashion is about the exploration of what is the human condition...
Music plays
Sojiro: Oh, you're back.
"Oh, kaeta ka?"
BRO I fucking love telepopmusic and I thought of them when I first heard this track in game, that makes me so happy! The one I thought of though was "Breathe", which is my favorite track of theirs
This the coffee’s shop/joker’s neighborhood theme. Also plays during rainy days
You should definitely hear the Super Smash Bros Remix of this song, it's incredible how they transitioned from a chill vibe to a combat centric song
Good ol rain
This one plays in the evening/Night in persona 5, it is sooo relaxing
This is the some of the most relaxing overworld music out there.
This song played with "Rainy Mood" is one of my main relaxing sleep tracks.
You put the song everywhere, because it's amazing!
literal chill music to do whatever in the game.
probably the best one in the series too, though I'd say Iwatoday Dorm is close.
It definitely is a groovy lullaby lol! The rainy day version of the song (which has no drums) puts me to sleep quick as hell
Life will change will blow your mind 🤯🤯
Hey if you're looking to check out Persona videos, the openings of the Persona games have fantastic themes. If not for the channel, then just to check out at your leisure!
Persona 5 is kind of split into two game styles. You have an over world area, which is the city you live in. That is where you level social links, progress certain parts of the main quest and side quests, things like that. The other half is in something akin to a dungeon. That is where you fight enemies and all that. This music plays like background over world music during night time,
There is a 10 hour video for this song, with rain overlapped.
(edit 1)
yes, this song does have a meaning.
I always imagine being at a coffee shop on a rainy night sipping on a cup of coffee when I hear this. ☕️🌃🌧
Who's up for a big bowl of Japanese curry and a mug of coffee?
"maybe a walking at night?"
WOW
its the music that plays while your walking around the city in the evening
If you want another soft/lullaby song, I would love to recommend "Main Title Theme" from Xenoblade Chronicles! Love hearing your insight and fresh takes. Keep up the vids bud.
I'd probably also recommend either Theosoir or Indol's tracks.
@@supergamer1388 Yes there are some sleeper songs in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 for sure
My favourite song on the OST and that’s saying something!
this and "rivers in a dry land' are my favorite tracks, this one is chill and the other is hype
Im not always a fan of meguro but this song always hits
One of my fall nap tracks. Especially with rain ambience.
Love this song, but the ~rain~ version is my favorite version of it.
1:39 if you like that bass line, go listen to "Price" or "Whims of fate" which are two others soundtrack of the game- (price being one of my favorite of the entire ost) Not the same energy, but groovy as heck-
Literally such a chill song
the fact that you got “walking at night” is increadable lol. That is exactly where it plays.
Even though it's short, I'd love to see your reaction to Persona 2's "Knights of the Holy Lance" theme. And then I'd love to see your reaction as you learn the context to the theme.
Persona 5 is literally my favourite game and Persona 3 is literally my favourite work of fiction
Other examples are:
P3: Life and death.
P4: Truth and falsehood.
Finally remembered my account information. I love this theme, but they gave you the wrong version. The 8 hour edition is out there. 😄
It's the Song to end all Persona 5 songs. Maybe the greatest slowdown song in modern gaming history.
There is also a rain version of this song. not that rain js in the background but a remix that only plays on in game rainy days. And it's even more chill than this version
No matter what track you listen to from Persona 5 you'll have a great time
If you ever have the time to do so, I Highly recommend you try playing Persona 5 for yourself, the game is absolutely phenomenal.
Where them sunglasses at? 😎
I have this game right here but still never played it. I'm so interested it should have a big story focus on dialogue
let me know how it goes!
Play it. Persona 5 is actually a masterpiece. Atmosphere, music, story, characters, everything is top tier. It is quite long though, decent play through taking your time can take 100+ hours.
You should play it.
I would love to see you do Unbreakable Tie from Persona 2, The Battle For Everyone’s Souls from Persona 3 and The Almighty from Persona 4.
Personally I really love the rainy day version. Even more chill version.
