The really neat thing about this track in particular, I feel, is that depending on your mood and certain contexts (especially in-game context), the music can go from upbeat and groovy to relaxing and pensive all the way to sad and depressing. It's like a mirror that reflects your thoughts, which is fitting, considering where this plays.
@@blakec8549 I think it’s reflective of how she doesn’t understand her own emotions. I mean she’s only 15, and for something that fucked up to happen to her, sheesh. I think her palace specifically is a very effective and nuanced portrayal of mental illness.
That's a wonderful way to put it. I have honestly just sat around listening to this in game for hours before because why not? The entire soundtrack is just musical gold
got to recommend "Whims of Fate", it's my all-time favourite song in the game, that and "no more what if's" and "I Believe" from the Royale Remaster edit: might as well complete the trifecta from the remaster with "Throw Away Your Mask"
One of my favourite Palace themes from P5, it’s somehow groovy and sad at the same time. I always loved how the guitar has almost a crying sound to it, which suits Futaba’s backstory very well.
futaba's arc was what got me totally hooked into p5, went into the game blind knowing nothing about the game/series. this song along with this dungeon was when i HAD to do everything in one sitting
One of my favorites from Persona 5!! I love how in the quiet part, the drums start again offset by one 8th beat, which totally took me by surprise when I first listened to it. Don't know much VGM that does that kinda stuff and isn't from a rather niche game.
This is my favorite part of the song, they do it to set up an 'early' entrance into the chorus and it's so satisfying. Also, it kind of forces you out of the groove unless you're counting and keeping track, and I find that really relatable to depression.
@@JJStylies Can you elaborate on this? Do you mean counting and keeping track as in when you have depression, you can only stay on track if you're accounting for all your success and failures and being on top of what's happening? (obviously counting and keeping track for the offset beat but I mean for the depression analogy to clarify)
@@AiZm8 I mean that depression/anxiety distorts your view of the world, especially in the context of depression as a mental illness (the way it's portrayed in Futaba), it's often a huge effort to just remember what is truly healthy or the average. I'm gonna give a personal example, which is extremely dark, so content warning to anyone who doesn't want to read that. As a teenager, I thought everyone had suicidal thoughts. I thought it was just normal because no one talked about it and a lot of people joked about it, and I had those thoughts. That's really what I'm talking about when I mention this, but there's a million different ways that sort of thing could manifest.
@@JJStylies also just wondering as well, have you come across any covers that actually have that offset beat? I can't seem to find any, or even any music analysis noticing it, just this comment thread XD
I'm actually really surprised this wasn't requested more. I feel like the guitar has some callbacks to the style of certain tracks that Meguro made for Persona 3, which is emotional already, but the circumstances of this song really just...summons emotions that I can't put into words. It's a groove you can cry to.
I think what's so special to me about the Persona games and the SMT series in general is that music very rarely seems to take a backseat. While most games will try to give the player some exciting, often orchestral track during battles or serious moments, often times they don't make the same effort in other spots. You find in a lot of games that moments like crawling through dungeons or wandering the open world is paired with relatively simple, ambient tracks that loop the entire time. Which I get it, you want to save a lot of the more bombastic or interesting stuff for when things really matter, not when a player is mindlessly fighting monsters in some random dungeon. But SMT and Persona don't really do that. This track in particular is used for a single dungeon. You never hear it repeated in other parts of the game, and once the dungeon is over, that's it. All of this effort and creativity was put into a single place the player explores, with every other dungeon having their own tracks. That's not even mentioning how there's two separate battle themes for whether you ambush or run into an enemy, different usage of vocals/instruments when it's raining in the world, boss fight songs that save the lyrics until some of the last encounters in the game, and more. It's nice to have a series that knows the importance of music not only in the big dramatic moments, but sometimes when you're just wandering from place to place, exploring the world. It makes it feel like every moment is something of note and not some throw away content the devs shoved in to bloat the experience.
I do agree if they added generic dungeon music, it would take away from the uniqueness each area, and detract from this game much more than it would from any another game. Each area needs it's own emotional impact with not only sights, but sound as well. Another way to get nostalgic, feel, and remember it.
The Kiseki series up until CS2 did the same thing. NieR Automata also does that. There are many series and games that do that. It all depends on what the composer and the game wants to make you feel.
My favorite version of this song was performed live by J-Music Ensemble back in 2019. They made the song more emotional for me with some insight on Futaba's backstory.
Ah yes, the wonders of going through the mess of a mind of a clinically depressed and traumatized girl, while jamming out to a certified banger. As others have said, yes, this does play on a gameplay segment, in fact it's a dungeon theme, and easily the most emotional of the bunch. It honestly makes traversing the dungeon difficult, because I just want to stand there, and not get into any battles, lol
The guitar style used in this song is exclusively used for sad musics in Persona 5, this is the only time it's used on a Dungeon theme. The soundtrack trained you to associate this guitar with sadness to remind you the dungeon is a mix of tech, energy and sadness.
Relistening to this track and hearing your comments made me realise something. With how the track has this constant repeated melody throughout almost the entire song using different instruments. It made me think of how this fits into fits into futabas story arc and how it reflects how she is constantly replaying the memories of her mother when she was there. No matter what she does in her day, that earworm of a melody, those bittersweet memories will always be playing in the back of her mind. The days when her mother was there. Or it’s 9am and I haven’t slept since yesterday so I’m sleep deprived lol.
Easily my second favorite dungeon theme in the game, right behind The Whims of Fate. I vividly remember putting my controller down and just vibing to this song for a few minutes the first time I heard it.
Bro the fact that you are listening to this song now that I have just gotten back into persona and am obsessed with this ost, I was literally searching last week if you had reacted to it. Love to see it
"Where's the 10 hour mix?" I feel you on that one. After hearing this track, it became my background music for awhile. Had it on loop for hours. It just has that chill, but slightly melancholic vibe--although that's probably due to knowing the context of this area of the game.
My favourite instrumental in all of the P5 saga. My favourite overall though would be I’ll Face Myself (soft version) from P4. Edit: Also, fun fact. This actually is played in gameplay.
The real fun is in the contrast because this song plays in a dungeon that is literally a tomb with monsters coming out of the grave to get you... and it's still so soft. That's because it contrasts the other themes of that particular dungeon because while the others are strictly against you, this one is hoping that you succeed.
OOO yeah ! One of my favorites ! If the title sounds emotionally charged, rest assured, the context is very much so as well. And yet, this is actually gameplay BGM ! In a dungeon, no less. A very meaningful one.
I look forward to when you start listening to the dancing game soundtracks. I've been re-listening to Dancing All Nights' and it has so many great songs.
I don't know about a 10-hour mix (wouldn't surprise me), but I have seen a 15-minute-or-so loop of this, and have been known to stick it on in the background when I just want vibing music. This, "Ark," "Freedom and Security" and "Yaldabaoth" are all really good for that. Maybe throw in "Secret Base" from P4 or the Tartarus theme from P3 building on itself.
The people who created this song did an incredible job at making every note feel heavy with grief and sadness, genuinely one of my favorite in the game
this was one of the most emotional parts of the game for me. that part of the game also gives so much context to the title of the track. one of my favorite areas in the game.
Love your thoughts on video game music! There’s so many songs I want to recommend but for now I just want to recommend Last Surprise and No more what ifs from persona 5. One of them is funky and the other is pure sexy jazz 😁
one of my favorite palaces from the game and this soundtrack really hit it home on such a memorable game. Wish i can play this level for the first time again
You really should react to blooming villan persona 5 it's goddamn amazing 👏. Edit : I mean the original and maybe the yaldyboath theme dancing version cause in my opinion it's the superior version 😌
Oh no, don't get it twisted, P3, 4 and 5 all have their own unique sound, you just haven't heard enough P4 yet. But all persona games, even back in P1 and 2. Have very diverse Soundtracks.
With most games it's pretty easy to either tune out or simply despise dungeon themes. This game actually never had that issue for me and this is one of the better themes.
So far I think you've mostly listened to the climactic themes and battle music, but this is the theme for when you're wandering around what are effectively the game's dungeons. There's a few chill themes like this and all of them are amazing.
A bit surprised we're still waiting for Price to make its way here, while Days has more emotional value no doubt I feel that Price is by far the grooviest of all dungeon themes
Posting this before the song actually gets there in the video, but I always felt the guitar sections of this song had a very Carlos Santana feel to them, which I fucking love
You should check out the Pizza Tower OST!, it's god damn bonkers. The game ain't even out and it's got a HOT list of songs. Tropical Crust, Yeehaw Delivery Boy and Oregano Mirage are my personal favorites, but even the title theme is good AF.
If you’re going to listen to P5 please listen to Yaldabaoth/Our Beginning and if you decide to listen to another P3 song I recommend either Light in Starless Sky or Self Redemption which are movie songs that fit extremely well with the game
Persona is pretty damn hard to describe, but for context I'll try to do the short short version. Basically, each Dungeon in the game (called a "palace") is a representation of the twisted mind of a criminal. Until you get to this one. In this "palace" you're trying to help a teenage girl (and future party member?) come to terms with her mother's untimely death, all while fighting her literal inner demons. This track plays the entire time you're wandering around her "palace" and aren't in combat. The only bad part is that, in game, the BGM is a bit quiet and compressed and there's a lot of sound effects going on as you sneak around, solving environmental puzzles, trying to avoid fights or sneak up on monsters for a free round, etc... so the track unfortunately gets drowned out a lot. I actually didn't like it much as a dungeon theme until I heard it on RUclips and went, "Oh, THIS is what it's supposed to sound like!? That's ten times better than what I was hearing in-game!"
Spent 300h+ on the game, and it was well worth it haha You can't go wrong with : will power, layer cake, blooming vilain, tokyo emergency, price, keeper of lust, the whims of fate, take over, no more what ifs, prison labor, gentle mad man, ideal and the real, I believe, keep your faith, throw away your mask ❤
You probably actually had this requested not by name, but as "Futaba's Palace theme", and to answer your question, this actually does plays in the thick of the gameplay of this section of the game which might involve a giant techno pyramid tomb and I will say no more.
Without going too far into it for spoiler reasons, this track is a dungeon theme. as others in the comment section already know, the dungeons in Persona 5 are based on the Seven Deadly Sins. The sin of this dungeon superficially resembles Sloth. What it actually is, and why it is like that however, I leave to you to discover.
You asked what the title meant, this song plays in the mental world of a neurodivergent teenage girl who blames herself for her mother's suicide and doesn't believe she has a right to live. Most dungeons are the mental worlds of criminals, hers is different because you are actually trying to save her from herself.
@@Conner3326 No Futaba is very neruodivergent. Erika Lindbeck admitted to playing her as somewhere on the autistic spectrum on top of the depression when you first meet her
@@Conner3326 she actually shows signs of Asperger's Syndrome even when she isn't depressed including her backstory of when her mother was alive. Neurodivergent is technically correct.
One of the better Palace themes for sure. Incidentally it's also one of the most annoying to play through XD Overall a great segment of the game though. HUGE story development, nobody spoil it for ppl that haven't played P5 please. Futaba is just such a great character. EDIT: Yeah P5 is the latest entry, but 6 has been confirmed and it's weird they haven't revealed it yet. Atlus should be showing it before the year is over as part of the 25th anniversary. You mentioned that it seems like they took their sweet time - that's because they did. P5 had a 6+ year development cycle and it shows. Even crazier is Atlus has said that 6 to be even bigger and better. They certainly set the bar pretty damn high. Can't help but wonder if Lyn will be back for 6 or not.
Considering every Persona game has their own lead singer, I don't think we'll hear any Lynn at all in P6. They'll probably introduce someone new for better representation of change of tone/story.
theme of one of the most beloved dungeons in the game. It's the perfect blend of design, music, and plot. Honestly fits its purpose as the game's midway turning point perfectly
I sort of don't understand why some people don't like this specific ost. Personally, I like this one because of the instrumental chorus plus the guitar and the vibe it gives off feels like you are curious about something and you want to know more of it

You asked what the title meant, this song plays in the mental world of a neurodivergent teenage girl who blames herself for her mother's suicide and doesn't believe she has a right to live. Most dungeons are the mental worlds of criminals, hers is different because you are actually trying to save her from herself.
“Neurodivergent” just say depressed shut-in babe x
@@Conner3326 neurodivergant and mental Illness are two different things.
As much as Persona 5 in particular has soured for me over time as a game, I still very much enjoy the music. This is one of the best tracks too.
Ah man it wasn’t the version with lyrics. It has a nice sax mixed in as well
i love persona music so much, it'll be cool if you played persona 5 royal one day!
One of the better Palace themes for sure. Incidentally it's also one of the most annoying to play through XD
Overall a great segment of the game though.
@@kt249 that's what I'm betting on
It is most deff gameplay
theme of one of the most beloved dungeons in the game. It's the perfect blend of design, music, and plot. Honestly fits its purpose as the game's midway turning point perfectly
You’ve gotta react to Persona’s invitation to freedom dude
I sort of don't understand why some people don't like this specific ost. Personally, I like this one because of the instrumental chorus plus the guitar and the vibe it gives off feels like you are curious about something and you want to know more of it
Do 'meganeko - the cyber grind' dude! Shits lit af
Nah its the main theme of a dungeon, you dungeon cawl and do puzzles and stuff
This is a dungeon theme that takes place in a pyramid in the mind of a hikikamori, I cannot make this shit up.
The lack of Lyn's vocals is VERY intentional.
The definition of bittersweet if you ask me
I always need to listen this song when it's hot.
Sorry I couldn't be here for the premiere
What a travesty to talk through the beat switchup
I feel that P5 would be a good stream game for you
