There would be less smuggling if the government isn't corrupt itself. 200% tax on luxury vehicles? For what? So the corrupt politicians can line their pockets with cash? A corvette cost 60 grand in the US. It's 180 grand in the Philippines. Even toddlers will know that this system is corrupt to the core. People respond to incentives, so if you want to lower smuggling, lower the ridiculous taxation without representation.

The smuggling business in the Philippines looks like this:
A rich mafia orders a Ferrari from outside the country. To avoid big taxes, he put a fictitious name as consignee of that car. Then he will wait until custom will confiscate this car as a smuggled vehicle. Normal procedure in custom is they auction all smuggled vehicle to the public. And the mafia will wait for this auction date of his Ferrari. He has an inside connection at the custom office that he bribe to inform him that his car is up for auction. Then lots of corruption and bribery are happening inside the custom so that the end result is; THE MAFIA WILL WIN THE AUCTION AND FINALLY GETS HIS FERRARI. The bribe money is way below the supposed tax amount for the luxury car. Finally, corrupt players inside the custom office got their share and the mafia got his car (now with all the legal government papers since he won the auction)... destroying this cars would mean that non of them (corrupt officials and smugglers) would benefit.

The fact is that most of these cars are not only smuggled but they were also probably stolen. There should have been an attempt to first ascertain if any are stolen and can be returned to their rightful owners and any that are not claimed could be shipped to the another country and auctioned. the money earned could be used for programs to care for the needy.

they also passed a new law that says if you own a car you must have a off street driveway to park it at your residence. and there is no such thing as car titles like what we have in the US. all you get is the sales receipt and you use that to get your car license plates. so there are no titles for these cars to be sold in the US, there is also no property taxes on houses.

Criminals will just buy them back from those poor people for a cheap price.
And second it is true that the country is not that rich, but for years captured smuggled cars have been auctioned. But most of the money gained from it are still with the corrupt politicians who auctioned them and only a tiny percentage of that money were spent for the country's welfare. The worst part is, the criminals who ordered them in the first place still get their cars from the auction (usually through bribery) , and they get it for a smaller cost compared to the cost if it were ordered legally. But still the country will benefit most if these cars were ordered legally because the money will directly go to the country's legal funds and not to some corrupt officials.

You're telling us what we already know, we have been selling this cars at auctions for years but the smugglers get away with it by bribing customs officials.
*The smuggling business in the Philippines looks like this:*
The bribe money is way below the supposed tax amount for the luxury car. Finally, corrupt players inside the custom office got their share and the mafia got his car (now with all the legal government papers since he won the auction).
But the president knows all these. Because of so many players involves inside and out of the bureau, it will take time to fix this scheme. So the shortcut solution is; he ordered all smuggled luxury cars be demolished. This is to send the message to the mafia smugglers "If you are still waiting for the auction date of your Ferrari, then wait no more. Just watch your beloved Ferrari crushed by a bulldozer. You can say bye bye to your expensive car. If you want..., you can order an new Lamborghini, smuggle it here in the Philippines and you will see another crushed Lamborghini again. Your bribe money and connection inside the bureau of custom will not save your car"
It is a drastic solution but I think it will be effective at the end.
So for people who asked, why not auction it instead of destroying it and give the money to the poor? This is the answer!
