Kris, I have to build one of those for myself. I could fish for bluegills from it when the lake doesn't produce! Man, you have it ALL figured out! What a great system! Good show my friend!
Great video. Love your yard sale finds and re-purpose. Keep us updated. Shout out from Canada. Have a freezer gonna try this with an old pool pump. Max
we made a filter system for a gold fish pond with a sump pump like the one you have. we took a square plastic tub and drilled 1 inch holes around it, and filled it with the same blue filter material. Sat it on bottom and sat sump pump on top of filter. we just let the water shoot up fountain style, but you could pipe it up to the aerator bar.
Hey Kris don't know if you worked out the kinks yet but I would say to put the filter on the return side of the pump and put the filter higher so it's becomes gravity feed I have built three fish ponds much larger than the bait tanks and it works great!
you could cut the spout off the cooler and use some kind of adhesive too cover the hole that should take care of ur air problem in ur other bait tank bc that spout I believe is what's taken in the air
Try designing a filtration system that can use a 20-30 gallon steel drum with a removable lid. Something like a Safety Kleen container. They used to ship undercoating for cars in them and some foods like flour and sugar. Check with the local recycling center. Design it something like the pool filter you use. Also. you could try an osmosis system but that would require a lot of work to maintain. Aquariums use a charcoal and fiber gravity feed filter when to get into the larger ones.
Cool. I think I'm going to make a smaller version for myself this year. I focused on bass mainly last year, but this year I'm after cats and carp mostly.
Now he has good a good system (if he only cleans one filter at the a certain time). So much aeration will strip the desinfactant immediatly out of the tapwater. This system is now (after his changes) 100 % approved ;)
Kris, I have one of those big totes and am using it for my perch and bass tank, while I have a 3/4 tank for my catfish. Once I get it all setup and working the way I want I will send you a link to the video on how mine is set up. The big problem I find is filtration. Those fish are nasty and they need constant filtration. I had my perch and cats together and let me tell you that was a nightmare. I think I have around 10-12 channel cats in my 3/4 tank and 15 perch or so in the big tank. I plan on harvesting the cats which I know will survive the winter because I've done it before, just need to provide some heavy insulation around the outside and top of the tank. You can use rolled insulation or the board on the sides. Here in the Abilene, Texas area, it can get down in the teens during the winter. Well, anyways I'll get that video posted when I get mine set up. It's just been super hot to really mess with it. Thank goodness fall is almost here. As always, enjoy your vids and catch ya later
Kris, I sent you a link to a video I made the other day about the setup I have. I sent it to your gmail account. Not sure if I sent it to the right email address lol
I like your tank!! I got a big problem, I can catch a lot of bait fish, bream---but keeping them alive is not working. I am using wire traps to catch them out of my 2 ponds. I can leave them in the trap----they die in a day or two--in either pond?? I got a 100gallon Garden tub set-up with a 5 gallon bucket filter, a pump to recirculate the water through the filter. I have a good quality air pump with a app 8" round air stone running. I tried this set-up with pond water, then with shallow well pump water--no chlorine , back to pond water, adding about 50 gallons per day fresh, I tried chemicals that is suppose to relieve stress, one that helps with the algae, no matter what I do I have dead fish the next day and they keep dying to where if I put 30 fish in it---they all will be dead in 2 or 3 days. The only thing I have not tried is to let it run a week or more before adding any fish----I do wait a day. I do set the 5 gallon bucket that has the fish in it---in the garden tub with a smaller air stone in it----I add some of the water from the tank----wait a hour or two and add a little more---before allowing them in the tank. The tank is shaded all day, plus 1/2 of it is covered with tin the rest with screen. I have been trying to get this going for 3 to 4 weeks now. They live longer with the fresh shallow well water than anything but still no more that 3 or 4 days. I have not checked the PH---but pumping straight out the pond into the tank---the PH should be OK?? What am I doing wrong?? Thanks For your Experience!!
That's a good set up ye got there. Just wondering, could you circulate water through both tanks, using that sump pump and your working filtration system? Hard to tell from short video, but it's a mighty interesting problem. Like i say, just figgering.
On your freezer tank. do you have it plugged in? I know you can plug it into a johnson control theromostat and it will control the freezer based on the settings. This way water won't freeze but will turn off and on to cool when needed.
you are getting air from the threads on the lid... have you tried using Teflon tape around the threads to prevent air going through them when you place the lid on it.. also make a washer for the top. you could use a bicycle tire, currently it and use it as a seal on the inside of the lid that touches the top of the cooler!!! just a few ideas for you...
Hey Kris, how do you think it would work if you framed a screened door type lid for the freezer tank? That way the fish couldn't jump out and the tank could get better air/water surface contact? Great video by the way.
I've thought about those pool filters but never tried one , I've had bait tanks in 100 gal Rubbermaid troffs or those galvanized ones looks like a lot more water with the freezer and you could put dividers in it to separate bait , I use leopard frogs , crayfish , bluegill chubs and bullheads , I keep the frogs in a laundry bag with pool noodles in it, floating in the tank , but the crayfish would attack the fish at night , have you ever set up anything for crayfish ?
You could just use the sump pump setup for the tote tank and route it to the PVC pipe. Also, there should be a ball cock valve at the bottom if you want to drain the tank and it should also get rid of fish waste as that settles in the low part by the valve.
a tank without plants means less light and/or more waterchanges or algea eating stuff to help with an algea problem. Filtration never breaks down algea, and algea feed on nitrates, so better filtration will only make a better invironment for algea. so changes in filtration will never change an algea problem.
Kris, on your pool pump, do you have a recommendation for the GPH pump needed? Plus, do you use any water conditioner to eliminate the chlorine from the water you add to keep the fish from dying off from tap water? Originally from El Paso, it's nice to see some familiar locations.
Lee Strain I don't have a recommended gph but just as long as the water is being filtered and aerated it should be ok. I don't add anything to the water, but i do let it sit overnight to let the chemicals dissipate.
Kris, do you use any additives in your bait tank, like the blue dye, to help with the oxygen in the bait tank? Also, do you use any treatment to remove the chlorine from the tap water?
cool idea. hey chris I'm headed down to port lavaca tx right now should make it there tonight. goin for work but going to have plenty of time to fish. got any hot spots to bank fish for some nice cats?
why not try a 5 gallon bucket for the filtration. You can get lids with gaskets for an air tight seal. Amazon has the lids for $9.99. You can get the buckets anywhere Home Depot or what ever hardware store you have. Or even a job site.
They have (API) water conditioner that removes the chlorine from the water. API water conditioner is just one name brand they have all types. They sell it at Walmart or any pet store..
Man, be careful of those one way tanks. The plastic caged one, they ship a lot of nasty chemicals in those. Triple rinsing will not get rid of the chemicals, only food grade buckets should be used! Just a comment, do what you do!
Excuse me kris or @muddyrivercatfushing I wanted to know if me and my dad could fish with you one day if so that would be the best thing ever and we also meet you at the outdoor expo in cruces and got your card if so send back😊??
Can't beat that good old chicano ingenuity my brother.....
you know it!
Kris, I have to build one of those for myself. I could fish for bluegills from it when the lake doesn't produce! Man, you have it ALL figured out! What a great system! Good show my friend!
Thank you Juanelo! you could mount the freezer under your dock and keep the fish in there to make for a sure catch every time.
😜👌✌️👍
Juanelo1946 hey juanelo u could use a pool lol that would hold a lot of fish haha
Genuine, yes that would work because the fish I catch are about the same size as Kris's bait! LOL!
Great video. Love your yard sale finds and re-purpose. Keep us updated. Shout out from Canada.
Have a freezer gonna try this with an old pool pump. Max
It is amazing how they will jump out of a small opening! I think they get feeling pretty frisky with good aeration.
I see you went the aquaponic route and got a tote, nice. I've got a 100 gal tank I bought at tractor supply to hold my bluegill and minnow.
you could have your own fish bait store right there I like the way you set it all up GOOD job.

Thanks bud for the video I'll have to make me one of these. Keep up the awesome work bro
I knew my buddy Kris Flores was an undercover Brainiac! Nice job Bro
you my friend are very informative just wow keep it up I'm in the mid west and you're very helpful
thank you!

that's great Kris. if you ever need help on anything feel free bro im anyways home just chillen lol
thanks!
Kris I know where some 80lb catfish are bring your mudd stick bank lines ..this summer bro we'll get em buddy and thanks again for the info ..
you could cut the spout off the cooler and use some kind of adhesive too cover the hole that should take care of ur air problem in ur other bait tank bc that spout I believe is what's taken in the air
Is that tap water, do you add anything to the water so the fish can live longer?

nice update
great video thanks for the update
that is bad ass right on that is a good idea
When you add water, are you using rain water, well water, or water that you've removed the chlorine from?
I like your tank!! I got a big problem, I can catch a lot of bait fish, bream---but keeping them alive is not working. I am using wire traps to catch them out of my 2 ponds. Awesome video kris
gracias amigo!

Kris what species of fish do you keep in the tank?
I've thought about those pool filters but never tried one , I've had bait tanks in 100 gal Rubbermaid troffs or those galvanized ones looks like a lot more water with the freezer and you could put dividers in it to separate bait , I use leopard frogs , crayfish , bluegill chubs and bullheads , I keep the frogs in a laundry bag with pool noodles in it, floating in the tank , but the crayfish would attack the fish at night , have you ever set up anything for crayfish ?
nice video man
good idea I was using my old fridge for worms. didn't think about bait fish that way bring my minows home and keep alive.
You could just use the sump pump setup for the tote tank and route it to the PVC pipe. Also, there should be a ball cock valve at the bottom if you want to drain the tank and it should also get rid of fish waste as that settles in the low part by the valve.
Good work. Very creative. Does the clear tank create more algae since it allows more light?
Yes, I did notice more algae, but I was uncertain if it was from the light or the lack of filtration
a tank without plants means less light and/or more waterchanges or algea eating stuff to help with an algea problem. Filtration never breaks down algea, and algea feed on nitrates, so better filtration will only make a better invironment for algea. so changes in filtration will never change an algea problem.
Love it man!
did the old way work well ? or did u just want to change ur setup ?
Kris, can you tell what the brand of that pool filter pump is? I can't get my Intex Pump working, figured I would get a similar pump that you have.
sweet hat
Your air leak probably may be coming from the lid on the water cooler. Both tanks look good
Could you put a couple T or Y fittings on your pool pump and use it to filter both tanks? Just an idea.
Do you have to have a bubble box after putting in a spray bar
Quick question would it be ok to take the lid off the freezer and make a door out of window screen
Do you use this year around or just in the winter time?
Kris, on your pool pump, do you have a recommendation for the GPH pump needed? Plus, do you use any water conditioner to eliminate the chlorine from the water you add to keep the fish from dying off from tap water? Originally from El Paso, it's nice to see some familiar locations.
Lee Strain I don't have a recommended gph but just as long as the water is being filtered and aerated it should be ok. I don't add anything to the water, but i do let it sit overnight to let the chemicals dissipate.
Roger that, thanks for the info. Enjoy the hell out of this channel!
Kris, do you use any additives in your bait tank, like the blue dye, to help with the oxygen in the bait tank? Also, do you use any treatment to remove the chlorine from the tap water?
I don't add any additives to the water and to get rid of the chlorine I just let the water sit for 24 hours before putting the fish in
You can leave the filter with algae . Its a good bacteria for the fish
cool idea. hey chris I'm headed down to port lavaca tx right now should make it there tonight. goin for work but going to have plenty of time to fish. got any hot spots to bank fish for some nice cats?
I haven't had the opportunity to fish there yet, but I hope you do well!
Try Getting you a old pool pump with filter for the bigger tank
Hell yea
use a old trash can or 5gl bucket I used a plastic trash can for a large pond I had worked great
👍💯💯💯
The fish will not jump out if you put a light inside.
what do you feed your bait fish?
pellet food from the feed store
why not try a 5 gallon bucket for the filtration. You can get lids with gaskets for an air tight seal. Amazon has the lids for $9.99. You can get the buckets anywhere Home Depot or what ever hardware store you have. Or even a job site.
good idea, thanks!
Great video! Question: how do you deal with the chlorine from the tap water?
They have (API) water conditioner that removes the chlorine from the water. API water conditioner is just one name brand they have all types. They sell it at Walmart or any pet store..
bigginksu chlorine naturally comes out of water as it is airerated so the bubbling action de-chlorinates it
Thanks!!
Run the air pump a couple days before adding the bait fish
Kris check out a guy on RUclips named Rob Bob He is from Australia and does a lot of DIY aquaponics check out some of His home made filters
thanks for the tip!
Man, be careful of those one way tanks. The plastic caged one, they ship a lot of nasty chemicals in those. Triple rinsing will not get rid of the chemicals, only food grade buckets should be used! Just a comment, do what you do!
