    Congrats to Ben Silber for coming up with the winning name. This streamer will henceforth be called... The Whippet. Thanks to everyone who submitted a name. We had some really creative ideas. :-)

  • @RyanAshley419
    @RyanAshley419 3 года назад +9

    I am glad you advocate being creative. I got into a bit of an argument (which I am really not prone to doing often) on one the the fly tying Facebook groups a few days ago because they really got on to this newer tier who tried creating something new. I thought it actually looked really good and had done his research on a bug in his area, but they were all like, "Eh, you have to spend 10 years tying established flies before you start experimenting!" I really hate social media sometimes. I don't know why people have to be Statler and Waldorf trolls all the times. I usually try to ignore social media trolls like that, but got sucked into that one because it really bothered me. Yes, you need to learn good habits and basic techniques, but I have actually learned the most when I have experimented to see what works and does not.
    Having gone on that rant (sorry), I like this fly. I need to experiment more with synthetic furs. I have not used a whole lot, usually because I have copious amounts of real fur. How does that fur work in the water? Does it get water logged? Sometimes synthetics act weirdly when they get into the water.

      I agree Ryan! Learn the basics and tie up anything you want. I took pictures of perch when just starting and then tied up some big flies with stuff on my bench that matched colors and caught some great largemouth on first time out. Local flyshop owner said that is exactly what its about. He actually copied and sells some of my creations. Good fishing to you! 👍🎣

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 года назад +6

      Great comment Ryan. I'm with you 100% here. I would never have an issue with a new tier trying anything they wanted to try. And of course there are purists out there who look down on us for using foam and rubber legs too. I can see their point (to an extent), as I can't bring myself to use Lively Legz, but for any tier out there who wants to, I say go for it. And about needing to learn good habits before experimenting, well sure, but you can learn a lot about what not to do by experimenting and trying things that don't work. I remember trying to tie some #18 Adams when I first started and wondering why my bodies were bulky and the heads looked like crap. Well I was using a 210 denier thread! That's a lesson I learned by tying a bunch of crappy flies. :-) If I had RUclips back then, I might have become a better tier a lot quicker!

      Sometimes you find out what NOT to do by experimenting. For instance, my sister in law gave me some craft eyes, and I found out they don't work well in bucktail streamers. (They were hollow googly eyes, so it was kind of hard for the fly to dive...DUH...LOL) So, I've decided to use them on frogs and poppers, lesson learned!

    Great video - thanks Matt. As a newcomer to this one of my challenges watching yours and others videos is keeping up with the enormous range of materials required. Every pattern seems to need something new. I appreciate materials will build up with time but if starting from zero it’s a bit frustrating to have to order new materials every time I tie something new.
    Would be great if for each pattern you could give some regularly used alternatives. Especially interested in synthetics etc which seem to be a bit cheaper.

    Simple Shiner?
    I like the comments about a video on alternative materials. We can spend a small (or maybe a large?) fortune accumulating materials or worse, drive ourselves nuts trying to find a highly specific material for a fly (Ex: female Hendrickson specifies dubbing from a urine-stained female fox fur.) when pink dyed rabbit dubbing would work just fine.
    The important thing is to use a material suitable for the fly action &/or the visual impression you are trying to create.

    • @SavageFlies

      I agree Bob, we do get wrapped around the axle trying to find original materials too often. And you know what I think? Some of these old time patterns use the materials they do because that's what the guy who created it had on hand. Making a "suitable substitute material" video is going to take some thinking, but I do think it will be a good one. Thanks for the note. (And BTW, I'm getting out on the river tomorrow. • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 года назад +1

      Oh, I love it! But I think we would need a yellow/black/yellow color scheme. Now THAT could be a memorable fly. Now you've got me thinking... okay, this fly isn't going to be the Banana Split, but I am definitely going to make one up and call it that. Oh yeah, this will be cool. Ohhh! How about we come up with a flashy steelhead fly and name it that? That's it. The next big fly in the steelhead game is going to be the Banana Split. :-)

    • @edherrmann182
      @edherrmann182 3 года назад

      @@SavageFlies m can be for Matt or michaels. 3- the fur strips from the craft fur. 5-each addition of the materials added to the fly. I’m still thinking of the 0- an afterthought might be to drop the 0 and consider M- 35. It works for me since it considers the 3 steps for craft fur, 1- step to add the yarn body, 1 - step to add the Maribou. I didn’t consider the lead. Anyway I thought the catchy name was practical.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 года назад

      @@edherrmann182 Okay, I'm getting it. I like the M-35 best. It reminds me of the old firecrackers called M-80s. Now I'll bet somebody, somewhere has named a fly the M-80. :-)

      @@SavageFlies ok Matt, I think I got it for your m-80. 8 materials on an articulated streamer or nymph. It could be both unique and super practical. D-ribbed and tinsel with silly legs or lively legs and a bead or two tied into the body using articulation wire. Craft fur animal dubbing, and feathers used as hackle and tailing. What an explosive masterpiece!
