    Clever design. I’ll bet the fish take it right after the pause in stripping it. This fly should work quite well for saltwater as well as fresh. Black for night, chartreuse for day, & white for both.
    The Dahlberg influence on the profile is quite clear & Gartside for the foam folding. Kudos to the originator.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 года назад

      Yes indeed Bob, it is a pretty clever design. And to answer your other question, the length of the foam is about four hook lengths (but you do end up trimming some), the width is about a hook gap, and the rhombus/triangle/hourglass at the top is, I don't know a judgement call I guess. But kind of big. :-)

    Now I know what to do with all of the foam I got when I bought a bunch of fly tying stuff at a swap meet. Keep the good stuff coming Matt.

      Thanks Johnny! Always appreciate it my friend. Funny story- I bought one of those foam craft kits at a Dollar Tree several years ago. It was a Halloween haunted house (for my 6-year-old kid). After Halloween instead of throwing it out, I broke it down, cut it into strips and put it in a ziploc bag. I was tying purple, orange and black hoppers out of that bag for several years. :-)

    Matt, the Stealth Bomber is my favorite smallmouth bass top water fly. The number 1 color is tan. I use craft fur as the tail, gold holographic tinsel in the tail and for the wing, SLF dubbed body, and round brown rubber legs. My second-best color is all white. It's killer. Good video. You da man!!

    Great video - just tied a few of these up to hit some central Maryland rivers. Do you fish these on a floating line or on an intermittent like a diver?

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 года назад

      I'm only fished these a few times David, but it was on a floating line from my kayak or belly boat. Pretty much just tossing toward the lily pads and grass of warmwater ponds where the panfish and bass might be active. But even with a floating line, a few quick strips does get it under the surface a bit. It certainly makes enough noise to get their attention. :-)

    Question- What is your source for the tails in the background? you got a guy or somewhere you can buy them like Collins?

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 года назад

      No set place really. I trapped the squirrels in the woods behind my house. The raccoon and foxes were road kill pickups. And oddly enough, I found the coyote tail at a Native American souvenir shop in Gatlinburg. I do buy a lot of pelts online and I think they also had some tails last time I checked. I’ll see if I have the link when I get home tonight...

      @SavageFlies  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Joe! I haven't ordered from them yet- but I did place a big order with Glacier Wear back in the fall and got enough cheap pelts to last me the next decade. Opossum, raccoon, skunk, muskrat, mink and several rabbit pelts. Check them out if you're ever looking for cheap furs. (www.glacierwear.com/animal-fur-pelts-hides-skins/raccoon-pelts.html) And remember, we can get away with the cheap grades. We're not making coats, we're making bugs for fish to eat. :-)

    • @joeduca8582
      @joeduca8582 3 года назад

      @@SavageFlies Sounds great, even better if they're tanned. I got spoiled with the fur from a cotton tail pelt I air dried. Guard hairs long enough for tails and wings, thick underfur for dubbing, VERY buggy! But the skin was like parchment, great if you're writing ancient scrolls but zonked patterns ripped. Tandy Leather has pelts and tails. A few years ago I got a beautiful silver fox tail from them when their local store had a stand at our state fair. I've bought stuff at Hobby Lobby before but the rabbit pelts had very short fur. Most of what I bought was on sale. I don't go there anymore. Great advice on "not making coats.... making bugs..." That's my mantra when skinning game ;o) Many thanks for the new link, take care!

    You said you had tied some on straight shank, and this was a curved shank. Which one, size and mfr do you think is BEST. Seems 2x gape is needed, but there are still a million options.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 года назад

      Hey Kool Dad (funny that's what my kids call me)... I've seen several references to this being tied on a Gamakatsu B10S and I think that may have been what Kent Edmonds initially used. You might see that called a Stinger hook, and it is a bit of a wide gape. I didn't have any of these, and the only hooks I had with a wider gap were these curved shank hooks. So that's really why I went with this hook. And this fly is definitely going to ride low in the surface film so I think a wider gape is a good choice. I think the biggest difference with this fly on a straight vs. curved hook will be how the tail will be angled more down on the curved hook. It will likely be down in the water if the fly is sitting on the surface, and in the chance that the deer hair somewhat floats, it might cause the head of the fly to have more of a downward angle. And then when stripped it might dive better. I haven't fished this yet so this is only a theory. So... that's my long answer to say I really don't know how different it will be! We might just have to tie both and try them out to see. :-)

    • @KooldadiJ
      @KooldadiJ 3 года назад

      @@SavageFlies Thank you very much. I’m going to order both some straight and curved shank hooks and see what happens! Thank you for the great video! KDJ

Butty salt & lemon pepper & oranges -apple slice's o.n top. Throw it on a 🔥 grill for six minutes we each side. Make a coleslaw add a glass of wine and you have a meal for a king.
