@@SavageFlies Glad to help out, Matt. I have been reading, and saving these PDFs in my files for a number of years, against the day I imagine they will make us start paying for them. LOL
Good morning Matt. Enjoyed watching you tie the streamer this morning. I’m glad you don’t edit out the footage when something isn’t going exactly the way you want. It’s nice to show us that it happens to even seasoned tiers like yourself. It’s great you were able to find time to get out fishing. Thanks for taking us fishing with you too. That was a real nice Brown. I often hear “ that’s a nice wild trout” when watching some of the videos. How do you tell the difference between a wild trout and a stocked one? Time for another ☕️. Take care Matt.
Thanks John! The Savage isn’t stocked below the dam so everything in this stretch is wild. But in waters where the stocked and native might intermingle, a sure sign of hatchery fish is that they’re usually a bit beat up. Fins nipped off, heads banged up from living in concrete tanks, etc. And wild fish usually have richer colors. Like the bright buttery belly on this guy. 😁
@@SavageFlies Makes sense. Up here most are stocked as fingerlings and since we don’t have any wild trout clipping fins isn’t required. If we did that process would be painstaking with fingerlings.
Sweet! An elegant (in the engineering sense) fly, simple & effective design that’s attractive. Plus, some very nice water where you caught a beautiful fish. That sulphur stayed visible throughout the cast & drift right up to the take. Good job landing him. Besides fishing a brawling, biggish river with pockets & counter currents, your Savage River is exactly the type of river that is my favorite. If I could still fish, I would happily visit & offer a day of bush hogging for a day of fishing.
Ha! Thanks Bob. It is a beautiful river. And one of the main reasons we looked for our retirement farm in the area. And the fish in the fly fish only section are surprisingly big for a fairly skinny tail water. And not just because they gorged on tons of cicadas last year!
Good morning Matt! That's a beautiful streamer and what a beautiful stretch of water to fish! I couldn't resist and paused the video, got on Ebay and bought the May '42 issue of PA Angler. Great comment; thank you! It really is fun to catch fish on your own flies. But don’t discount the panfish and bass! They can be just as fun and I’ve yet to catch a big bass on a fly. 🤣
Nice classic pattern. Fish don't see a lot of older patterns and probably they will work as well as they did in the past. I never fished the Savage when I lived in Maryland. Very nice tie for the streamer well done, thanks Matt. That was one chunky Brown Trout, he hasn't missed many meals. You did great on the stream footage, great bonus.
Lovely sea trout fly Matt and a great video again, I know it's a tying channel but the fishing was pretty cool and I would like to see more. Using the fly you just tied was a great idea and would make a great addition to your tying vids, obviously it's way more work but it would definitely pay off. As for marabou I've swapped for arctic fox especially with black as black marabou is mostly awful and the decent stuff is getting very expensive, I tried craft fur and mohair but arctic fox is the best by a mile and a little goes a long way. And well done landing the fish, a lovely looking trout.
This is an outstanding comment Graham! I had forgotten about Arctic fox fur but remember how much like marabou it is the last time I used it. I’m going to break it out again and play around with it more. As for more fishing clips, I’ll try to add them when I can. One problem is that I can pretty much tie every day but I only get to fish about twice a month. 😫

Nice tie Matt. Looks a little like one of our NZ classics called a Scotch Poacher. It probably developed off this one you tied. We are at the end of our season. I’m hoping for one more trip to our river this weekend to fish and do some hut maintenance. Thanks for sharing as always.
Hell yeah matt great job. I have been hoping and waiting for a fishin vid from u. That savage river looks absolutely beautiful. Hope this aint the last fishin vid we see. Thanks for sharing
I was able to catch one of those little fish I told you about on another video. They were roundtable chub. Native to AZ. Caught it on a home made fly I call the Little Red Devil.
Another nice fly! I really like the addition of the jungle cock eyes. For looks, it reminds me of the Hohbo by Steve Probasco, though that's tied with rabbit fur. I imagine this would fish just as well out here, and it's a slightly simpler tie, I'll have to try it. Very nice!
Good Morning Matt! I loved the extra footage. Beautiful fish! This channel keeps getting better and better. Take care and keep on fishin' BTW what 3 wt do you have ?
@@SavageFlies I have an echo lift 7'6" 3wt with a Piscifun reel and Rio creek line. I love it for the small Driftless creeks I fish. I would rather spend the big$ on travelling to that area than big $ rods/reels. Most creeks are maybe 20' wide at the most.
@@chevyguy6510 I love those Piscifun reels! Unless I get into saltwater fly fishing someday and need a nice drag, I’m done buying expensive reels. We can buy 4-5 of these things for the price of one “nice” reel. And the thing is, they’re actually nice reels! I’ve had two nice Redington Rises go bad, but I’ve never broken a Piscifun and a couple of mine I’ve beat up pretty good. 😁
Appreciate it Jon! I was using a Hero 8. Not a top of the line but it does well enough. And I can control it with my phone. I may try it on a tripod next time. 👍
Thanks Thomas! Those nails were from my best cape. I got it from Whitetail Fly Tying but the last I checked they didn’t have any. I hear Theriault Flies has plenty of grade A capes but you have to call them to order. Thanks for the note my friend. 👍
Nice tie Matt!, and good to see you fishing. Excellent catch on that beautiful brown. What type of line were you casting, and what weight tippet? Enjoyed watching, tight lines. 👍👍
Another great video Matt thank you for all of them. I do have a question for you. I have a 3 weight rod and have looked at many sites hoping to find someone that fishes them with no luck. I bought it because I thought it would be fun to catch blue gills and other sunfish on it. It's strange that you read about 4 weight and up rigs but not 2 or 3. Is it possible that people are afraid to admit that they have them or don't think that they're worth using. Just wondering about this.
This is a very interesting question. I’ve never given it much thought but there could be something there. I’ll bet I fish a 3-wt 80% of the time. In fact, I spent eight hours on the water this past Saturday with a 2-wt. Of course most of the waters I fish are just like what you saw at the end of this video. A 5-wt is perfectly fine there but anything bigger is really unnecessary. And a 3-wt is easier and simply more fun. Unless… I’m planning on fishing streamers. Then I usually grab a 5. So I guess my short answer would be, I’ve never heard of anyone being ashamed of fishing light tackle. I’m certainly not! Now one other note- I am about to buy my first 8-wt to go after some snakeheads here in Maryland. I will really be stepping out of my comfort zone here. 😁
More a question on an older pattern. It's for a Brown Dun reverse bend. Internet wasn't much help. As far as I can tell,it requires the fly to be tied with the point of the hook on top, rather than below. Am I correct in this? Don't remember where I got the pattern.
Nice pattern and nice fish. What are the nearest crossroads at the bridge location you were fishing or what is the name of the wood mill you refer to in the video? Thanks
If you’re familiar with the area, turn on to Savage River Rd in Bloomington, MD. The lumberyard is on the right, you just keep going to the first bridge. Here’s a link: maps.apple.com/?ll=39.486440,-79.083052&q=Dropped%20Pin&_ext=EiYp515/1q+9Q0Ax9730L7DFU8A5ZTSlMta+Q0BBo9Hze/HEU8BQBA%3D%3D&t=m

Nice tie Matt. Looks a little like one of our NZ classics called a Scotch Poacher. It probably developed off this one you tied. We are at the end of our season. I’m hoping for one more trip to our river this weekend to fish and do some hut maintenance. Thanks for sharing as always.
Thanks! Good luck if you do get out one more time. 👍
Hell yeah matt great job. I have been hoping and waiting for a fishin vid from u. That savage river looks absolutely beautiful. Hope this aint the last fishin vid we see. Thanks for sharing
Appreciate it John! I’ll definitely try to work in more fishing footage. My biggest challenge is that I get to tie more than I get to fish. 😁
Excellent catch! That Maribou Streamer is pretty neat
Thank you James! I appreciate you watching my friend. :-)
That's a beautiful river and an awesome trout! Wish i had a river close to me.
Thank you! It really is a fun river. 👍
That was a great fish!
Appreciate it Mark!
Beautiful brown. Nice catch Matt..
Great fly and nice to see you catch a fish.
Really enjoyed this video matt thanks for sharing it.
nice catch Matt
good to see you fishing 👍😀
Thanks Mike! It’s always good to be out in the water. 👍
Nice looking streamer. Sweet looking trout. Congrats
Thanks Jeff! Appreciate the note my friend. 👍
@@SavageFlies you're welcome
That was a nice Brown Matt! I tied a half a dozen of those sulfers but haven't gotten out yet to try them but it's obvious the Brown Trout likes them.
Oh yeah, in May and June these are the ticket around here. Then we can go to the big hoppers in July. 👍
Nice fishing. You’re so lucky to live close to the Savage River.
Thanks! Yeah it’s a pretty amazing river. 👍
Great fly Matt and well tied. I am going to the Margaree next week for Atlantic Salmon with a veterans group.
Mike
That's outstanding Michael! Good luck up there my friend. :-)
Loved the footage of you fishing Matt. Keep it up if its not too much work!
Appreciate it Mike! I'll definitely try to add more fishing clips when I can. Thanks for the note my friend. :-)
I was able to catch one of those little fish I told you about on another video. They were roundtable chub. Native to AZ. Caught it on a home made fly I call the Little Red Devil.
Love seeing the fly in action
Appreciate it Jim!
Awesome video Matt Thanks tite lines 🎣🎣🙏
Appreciate it Michael!
nice fish! good to see you out there.
Thanks Frank! It’s always good to be on the water. 👍
Another nice fly! I really like the addition of the jungle cock eyes. For looks, it reminds me of the Hohbo by Steve Probasco, though that's tied with rabbit fur. I imagine this would fish just as well out here, and it's a slightly simpler tie, I'll have to try it. Very nice!
Thanks Tom! I do like using real JC eyes when I can. Just so hard to come by these days.
Nice tie Matt. I really like streamers! Thanks for sharing your time and talent! KANSAS
Appreciate it Jack!
Good Morning Matt! I loved the extra footage. Beautiful fish! This channel keeps getting better and better. Take care and keep on fishin' BTW what 3 wt do you have ?
Appreciate it Todd! This was my Redington Vice. It’s not a high end rod but it’s an absolute champ! I often grab this one over all my others.
Great fish buddy !
Nice fish ! Matt
Nice catch matt
Thanks Daniel!
Nice Matt. Thank you.
Appreciate it Mike!
Nice fish, well done! Hope there wasn’t any poison ivy in that undergrowth you bushwhacked through!
Ha! Thanks Ed. No poison ivy there. 👍
For sure, loved the footage of you catching that brown. Hope to see more. Curious about your Go Pro? Great video. 👍
Appreciate it Jon! I was using a Hero 8. Not a top of the line but it does well enough. And I can control it with my phone. I may try it on a tripod next time. 👍
What a great fly👍👍👍👍
That JC you have is amazing, I just got a cape and maybe 20% isn't split. Where did you get it.
That was a really nice fish 👍
Thanks Thomas! Those nails were from my best cape. I got it from Whitetail Fly Tying but the last I checked they didn’t have any. I hear Theriault Flies has plenty of grade A capes but you have to call them to order. Thanks for the note my friend. 👍
Nice tie Matt!, and good to see you fishing. Excellent catch on that beautiful brown. What type of line were you casting, and what weight tippet? Enjoyed watching, tight lines. 👍👍
Appreciate it Jim! I believe that line was Scientific Angler Mastery (trout). And a 9-ft 5x leader.
Well done!
Thanks CP!
Oh yea. Happy Fathers Day!!
Nice fish! On a 3 weight at that! 👍
Thanks! This comment made me go back to watch that video again. And man, now I can't wait for the sulphur hatch this spring!!
Check out the snappy puttal. No fly tying today.Putting up hay.
Be safe Ken!
Nice Nice Fish Congrats
More a question on an older pattern. It's for a Brown Dun reverse bend. Internet wasn't much help. As far as I can tell,it requires the fly to be tied with the point of the hook on top, rather than below. Am I correct in this? Don't remember where I got the pattern.
I think I’ve seen what you’re talking about but I can’t remember from what book. I’ll check when I get home. Thanks for the note!
nice video awesome brown trout
Appreciate it Lora!
Nice pattern and nice fish. What are the nearest crossroads at the bridge location you were fishing or what is the name of the wood mill you refer to in the video? Thanks
If you’re familiar with the area, turn on to Savage River Rd in Bloomington, MD. The lumberyard is on the right, you just keep going to the first bridge. Here’s a link: maps.apple.com/?ll=39.486440,-79.083052&q=Dropped%20Pin&_ext=EiYp515/1q+9Q0Ax9730L7DFU8A5ZTSlMta+Q0BBo9Hze/HEU8BQBA%3D%3D&t=m

Have you ever heard of Dave Cammiss?
I never have Chris. I'll have to look him up...
@@SavageFlies
Unfortunately, Dave has passed on. But, I use to watch his videos for hours. He is sorely missed. Great teacher.
ps what is bush hoggin? is it pig hunting?
It does sound like it, but nope, it’s using one of these things behind a tractor to clear a field.

Hello Mr. O’Neal,
I just wanted to say how amazing your videos are and that I also have sent you a DM on instagram. If you don’t mind responding that would be great. Thank you for your time.

Hi Jake! Thanks for the kind words. I haven't been on Instagram in months but I'll log in and check out your note. :-)
