Another advantage of the RX550 is you could use better textures because of the ram.
If you compared them only with the lowest textures you were skipping one of the benefits of double the memory the RX550 has.

I realised LONG ago that buying a GeForce card is a mistake. I had owned an Albatron GeForce FX-5200 (AGP), an XFX GeForce 6200 (AGP) and a Palit GeForce 8500 GT 1GB. Then (I know it's cliche) I wanted a PC that could run Crysis. That meant a quad-core CPU like a Core2Quad Q9400 or a Phenom II X4 940 (because I didn't want to spend major cash on a Wolfdale Core2Duo E8400). I chose the Phenom II because I saved about $300 by doing so (including the motherboard cost). I got together 8GB of OCZ Reaper DDR2-800 and was ready to upgrade my video card and I had a Sparkle GTX 260 968MB in my sights but the tech press said that ATi was cooking up something major and I had the good sense to wait.
ATi didn't disappoint this time around like they did with the HD 3000 series because the ATi Radeon HD 4870 1GB was essentially a GTX 260 for $200CAD less and I snapped up an XFX Reference model and added an XFX "Egg" model for Crossfire about a year later. After I was done with those I was so pleased with them that I decided to stick with ATi and I bought two Gigabyte HD 7970 Windforce OCs which came with four free games because they were being rebranded as the R9 280X. Still happy, I succeeded them with two Sapphire R9 Fury Nitro+ OCs, then an XFX RX 5700 XT THICC-III, an ATi RX 6800 XT OG Reference and now an ASRock RX 7900 XTX Phantom Gaming OC.
I've been 100% satisfied with Radeon since 2008 and have never even been tempted to go back to GeForce. The way I see it, Radeons work just fine (I don't get the hype about bad drivers because I never had any real issues) and buying a GeForce would mean that whatever budget I had at the time would've just given me inferior performance with a GeForce card instead of a Radeon.

For me RX 550 Certainly wins. More VRAM, more performance, probably one of the better Low End GPUs that you could fit into those SFF (Or perhaps USFF as well.) PCs and whatnot.

    • @jims_junk
      @jims_junk  5 месяцев назад +8

Totally agree, got so much more for your $$$. Only issue with this model in particular is the heatsink is worthless. I was using it on a workbench. The 550 immediately went up close to 80deg when I launched heaven for the first time. That is with all the air it can get on a wide open room temp workbench. Can't imagine how it would do in a small closed off case. What I wound up doing is using a couple 80mm pc fans to blow at it which helped a bit. When I overclocked it I wound up using the heatsink from the geforce 210, and used that with those same 80mm.

Not really you need to see how fast the VRAM actually is... also the 550 is X8 and the 1030 is X16
Bandwith with such low VRAM in both cases has the most impact.
But just spend the money on an ARC gpu or a $180 RX6600
The price difference is stupid small for the performance you get.

I noticed on few games had higher CPU use on NVidia's card, wonder what causes that?
Technically drivers are to interact with DirectX API calls translating to the specific language of hardware or in case of OpenGL drivers are literally the OpenGL API written by NVidia for their hardware. Either way drivers could delegate some job to GPU could also "emulate" some on CPU, can schedule some task, rearrange etc. I suppose the only way to verify would be to use worse CPU and check whenever both cards are bottlenecked equally?

I've got an XFX RX 480 8GB and I've had almost no problems with the Windows drivers until fairly recently where the driver just randomly crashes when I'm playing Mechwarrior 5. The tradeoff is that on Linux (it's a dual boot system) I get worse performance in the same game, but with no crashes

  • @ravenzbot

I'm pretty much convinced the 550 is still the budget king and the next best thing up is the 6400. I am doing a low budget oem SFF build for my upstairs bedroom pc.
    here's the build:
    prodesk 400 g5 sff
    i5-8600
    2x8gb visiontek 2400 ddr4
    rx 550
    wd sn270 256gb nvme m.2 ssd
    1tb seagate firecuda
    wavlink ax210 wifi/bt pci-e card
oem psu (may have to upgrade to oc card further?)
Other than doing a custom mini pc build by ordering a tiny case on aliexpress and getting yet another pricey mitx 8th gen mobo which would put me at least $150, the barebonse g4 sff cost me 60 shipped.
Honestly after checking most of the lp card comparison vids i'm surprised with how well the 550 does in doom eternal and quake champions.
I originally got a g5400 but after seeing the potential of the card I decided on an 8600 non-k to max out the single threaded ipc. it's faster than the 8400, around $40 shipped, and the 9600 non-k takes it only marginally further but at almost double the price so I've determined the 8600 non-k to be the new budget king chip.
The 8600 non-k blows even the i3-10100 out of the water.
So all in all I think I may have picked the best card and cpu combo for the price. I won't be gaming hard, but from what I've seen the 550 does better in most titles and is generally around 20-30 fps behind the 6400, and aside from what's shown here, tends to beat out the 1030 by at least 10-20 frames in many titles.
CPU-intensive titles should be just fine with the 8600's single threaded ipc.
Really looking forward to this card!

I like the power efficiency of the gt 1030, but the performance of the rx 550, if they were new, the rx 550 would be my choice, because it is still a PCI-E only power GPU and it has more performance, VRAM, but in an ideal world, I'd like it consume 25-30W, too bad AMD was stuck with global foundries vastly inferior process node.
And it's also sad that we don't get GPUs like these anymore.

If you test these old card. Would be great if you tested the energy consumption too. For me it counts a lot if a card is maybe a bit slower but needs 3 times less energy, then this is a win. Old and slow cards should be connected to energy consumption. Because most of the time they are just run for office use. I dont need 5fps more in a game that I wont play anyways. But if I waste 10W more while just surfing the net, this makes a huge difference.

This particular RX 550 is a Dell OEM part; I know this because I have the exact same one (sitting outside of the system; got a GTX 1050 4GB in the slot). It's BIOS limited on power draw. You may be able to get it to overclock better if you can hack the BIOS and raise the limit. I tried, and didn't get much in the way of results. Kinda soft-bricked the board until I restored the original BIOS (of course I backed it up). After that I didn't feel like pursuing it. Maybe I'll try it again one day but I think I'd like to have a spare system to try it with. Did you do this on a different system last time? I noticed the description says FX 8320 but it looks like you were on an i5-3570 this time around. I wonder if the FX system was limiting the GPUs in any way... I know that AMD FX wasn't so great even back in the day.

Honestly, it's a win for both cards. Keep in mind that that the GT 1030 and RX 550 are not in the same tier. The GT 1030 is a 2017 entry level card (it's AMD counterpart should be the RX 530-540) while the RX 550 is a 2017 midrange card (its nVidia counterpart should be the GTX 1050).
It's a win for the RX 550 because it's a midrange card that is priced only a few dollars higher than nVidia's entry level GPU from the same year.
It's also a win for the GT 1030 because it's a passively-cooled entry level card that is almost close to the performance of an AMD midrange card from the same year.

Tried to get a replacement but the fan I got had the wrong end, don't feel like investing in a connector kit for just one thing. And certainly don't want to throw more money at that card.
