I added a front light kit to my GBA back then, my first ever console mod. I managed to melt the case a little bit too as it showed you in the instructions to solder it inside the case 😅

To answer the video title: it's because it's using a reflective LCD not a backlit one.
In my opinion, the non-backlit GBC and GBA have their own unique charm and benefits.
I have a modded GBA too with a backlit IPS display and while it looks impressive, it also chugs so much power that my battery only lasts for just a little over two hours. My non-backlit GBC, meanwhile, has been sitting on the same set of AAs for about two weeks now and it still hasn't ran out of juice.
Also, the non-backlit screens are great for reducing eye strain. As someone who usually stares at a bright computer monitor for hours on end, I find it relaxing to just load up my non-backlit GBC and play on a well-lit room as if I'm reading a book.
Obviously, that's not to take away how impressive the backlit IPS screen mods are for these systems. Just offering an alternative perspective on it. 🙂

It's weird though how both gbc and gba have both non-backlit screens, but they work opposite of each other. On a GBC, lighting the screen from above has the effect of making thr screen have lighter color hence, GBC games tend to have harsher colors to offset this. It's completely the opposite on the GBA, as lighting the screen from above makes the colors of the screen darker hance GBA games tend to have overlightened palettes to compensate

I love the GBA! I've ordered a screen mod for my GBA, haven't got it yet. Can't wait! I do enjoy playing on the vanilla GBA but the back light will be a huge improvement.
