  • Hello! I’m John Russell. Let’s continue our exploration of common words, phrases, and questions.
In today’s lesson, we will talk about pronunciation and the common question, "How are you?" Or its related form, "How are you doing? "
Let’s pay careful attention to the first word of the question : how.
How is a common question word that we can break apart into two general sounds: the consonant sound /h/ and the vowel sound /aʊ/.
To make the consonant sound, we need to have our lips somewhat relaxed. We use the back our or tongue to create resistance at the back of our mouth, like this:
    /h/
    /h/
This sound is voiceless, meaning that your vocal cords should not move when you make the sound. You can test like this:
    /h/
Our vowel sound is this : /aʊ/
In previous videos, I have called this a traveling sound. Why? Because your lips must travel while you make the sound, like this:
    /aʊ/
Now, let’s put together what we have learned:
    How
    how
Now that we have the first word in our question, we can move onto the other words. In many cases, English speakers pronounce "how"very clearly and then change the pronounciation of the following words.
So, "How are you?" "How are you doing?" becomes "How are ya?" "How’re ya doin’?"
We will explore more questions and answers in future videos.
    That’s all for today!
    Keep up the good work
