  • Hello! I’m John Russell.
Recent videos in this series have explored the vowel sounds of American English.
Let’s continue our exploration of the neutral vowel sound. In International Phonetic Alphabet, or IPA, we write it like this: /ə/
You should be aware that sometimes in IPA you will see /ʌ/ as well.
    /ə/ and /ʌ/
The difference between the two spellings is in terms of stress. But you don’t really need to worry about that now.
The neutral vowel sound appears in all kinds of words. But one common place you will find it is in words spelled with the letter o.
The letter o is difficult for English learners because it can be pronounced many different ways.
Here is one nice way to remember these words. Think of family. I’ll explain.
Several nouns related to family have the neutral vowel sound. For example, we have brother, mother, son.
We can use this knowledge to predict the pronunciation of new words.
For example, can you guess how to pronounce this word:
    Grandmother
That’s right, we use the neutral vowel sound when we reach the letter o - grandmother.
We have the word “mother” and add “grand” to the beginning of it.
That’s all for today! Keep up the good work!

I have always learnt that /ə/ and /ʌ/ are entirely different sounds, with /ə/ or "schwa" known as the neutral vowel sound in English. Could you please clarify ? Thanks.

You can see where it is on the vowel chart here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open-mid_back_unrounded_vowel It is further back than the /ə/ sound.
