  • Hello! I’m John Russell.
In recent videos, we have done a deep dive into the vowel sounds of American English.
But our exploration is incomplete. We need to spend a bit more time on one vowel sound. What is this vowel sound? I like to call it the king of English vowel sounds.
It is the neutral vowel sound. When it is unstressed, we call it the schwa. In International Phonetic Alphabet, or IPA, we write it like this: /ə/
When it is stressed, we write it like this:
    /ʌ/
But you don’t need to worry about that for now.
The most important point is that the neutral vowel sound sounds like this:
    /ə/
Now, why did I call this vowel sound the king of English vowel sounds?
If we look at history, kings have often been at the center of the action. Kings have been the central part of political systems.
In the same way, our neutral vowel sound is central to every discussion in American English. It is central to the lives of Americans - whether they realize it or not.
The idea of centrality is also important when we produce the neutral vowel sound. Some pronunciation guides call it a mid-central vowel sound.
This is because we produce the sound by putting our tongue in a relaxed middle-central position in our mouths.
We will explore more about the neutral vowel sound in future videos.
That’s all for today! Keep up the good work.
