- Since 1972, CBS' "The Price Is Right" has been giving Average Joes everywhere a chance to win big. And for the last 15 years, another Average Joe, comedian Drew Carey, has won big, stepping into Bob Barker's shoes as host of a TV institution. Carey talks with correspondent Lee Cowan about his journey from Marine Corps Reservist to standup comic and sitcom star to game show royalty.

I was on Price in 2015 and it was a dream come true! I made it up on stage, picked up Drew, won my game, and got to say hi to Bob Barker while spinning the wheel!
What is so amazing is that Drew has made the show his own without changing the way the games are played. That's why i still watch Price is Right faithfully every single day!!
You never watch it tho
Drew Carey should take The Price is Right on the road- how about this, bring the show to his native Cleveland, then consider other cities to take the show to, such as Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Detroit, St. Louis, Chicago, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, New York City(where the original Price is Right originated from), etc.!!!
Those days home from school sick back in the 70's watching Mr. Barker. Much simpler times. And now at 53, I would love to have a few beers with Drew.
CBS needs to revise this story to include the Price is Right with Bill Cullen. This game show has been televised much longer than 50 years!
Price has actually been on for 65 years starting in 1956 on NBC and moving to ABC in 1963 eventually ending in 1965.CBS got the show in 1972 and has been going strong ever since, not including the three syndicated shows.
@@georgemaster689 Nineteen years ago NBC “The Today Show” mentioned TPIR with Bill Cullen as part of a small piece they did to a salute to Game Shows.
Drew sure appears to be a good guy, I’m happy for him.
Drew Carey is such a sweetheart!
I still remember his days with Mimi as a kid. Boy, that was quite a show.
I understand that Drew is a great tipper!
The success of Drew Carey on The Price is Right is he realizes he is NOT bigger than the Game itself.
Exactly!!!
First tv game show I went to see live when I moved to LA in the 80's, the Bob Barker days. Amazing it's survived this long.
I noticed there was an episode about 13 years ago where one of the prizes was a fireplace. 😕
I guess that's what you call 'easily pleased'. 😒
The day bob barker passes will be the saddest moment in price is right.
Honestly didn’t even know he was still alive
@@treefiddy5424 he still kick in it
@Gary Henzler
In association with your comment, not only do I agree with you, I've learned long ago that the girls one can take without trouble are on paper, love dolls, or, my favorite, the 'females of the pillow family'; or giant ragdolls, that is.
Alex trebek was always the host of jeopardy whereas Bob insisted on being introduced as the "star" Without all the zany contestants he'd be a 3-ring Barker.
Hmmm. 50 years⁉️ I was watching "The Price Is Right" as a 10yr. old, in 1961; & I'm CERTAIN that it was on TV, when I was in kindergarten. Part of the background sounds, when I was playing with my toys. WHY have they NOT mentioned Bill Cullen, who had day-time & night-time shows‼️‼️‼️😩🤔
It really hit home when you talked about being in the Marines. I was extremely shy as a kid. Had no friends but just after high school I joined a gym near my house. Talk about a Brotherhood. It made me feel that I belong. I trained with a World Champion there. I've enjoyed showing people his picture from a old lifting magazine. Sorry if I'm being long winded but lastly I want to thank Jesus for the owner Gary. He was very happy that I won my first contest. He brag to everyone about it. Rest is Peace my friend Gary.
"The Price Is Right" was part of a trio of game shows that debuted on CBS Daytime on September 4, 1972, the others being "The Joker's Wild" with Jack Barry and "Gambit" with Wink Martindale (the forerunner to Game Show Network's "Catch 21"). Since that time other networks have gotten out of the daytime game show business and syndication has ruled, but CBS is still going strong with "TPIR" and "Let's Make A Deal" in their lineup - Happy 50th Anniversary to "Price" and may it have many more years of fun to come!
Great to see Drew Carey succeed.
I can remember in 1972 being in second grade coming home from school and watching The Price is Right with my mother in the afternoons. It was The Price is Right with Bob Barker, then the game show called Match Game with the host Gene Rayburn and they both carried those really long skinny microphones. 🎤
I'm blessed that I got to appear on stage to fulfill my childhood dream with Bob Barker back in 2006! God willing, I will return in hopes of appearing on stage again with Mr. Drew.
Nice! Good for you man!
@@lewstone5430, thank you, kind sir
@@gsnman I would have loved to meet Bob Barker.
The price is right has been on longer than 60 years. Just a little bit of research would’ve shown you that Bill Cullen hosted the first 10 years of the show in black-and-white. If you’d like some help in that department I’m a 67-year-old disabled vet living on fixed $1150 a month who could use the job
I don’t think CBS Sunday Morning has much interest in promoting anything that didn’t happen on CBS.
That’s too bad they didn’t cover it fully. Seemed to be a story on Carey m oh re than the history of TPIR.
Major Chutzpah- Thank you for your service. Thanks for information..I remember Bob Barker on Price Right. Now Drew is on there. Awesome show
Bill Cullen's Price aired on NBC 1956-63 and ABC from 1963 to 1965
Note that Trebek and Sajak have had a TV gig that outlasted Barker's
Wow, I haven't seen the show in a while. Drew Carey looks great with longer hair! He certainly has fun on the show!
I remember when I was a kid I used to want to get sick so I could stay home from school and watch Bob Barker give away all that cash and prizes, especially the cars. Ah, the late 70's and early 80's.
Me too! I remember it came on 11.
This show is one of the best parts of pretending to be sick and staying home from school
Yeah it was.
At 99, Bob almost made 100 and he did it without going over the actual retail price!
50 years of "The Price Is Right" ⁉️ I was watching it, in 1961-62‼️‼️‼️Bill Cullen at THAT time ; long before Bob Barker‼️
Yes but they were talking about the current CBS era. But to be fair not everyone remembers the original run.
@@stephenholloway6893 yep, those who watched the original price is right from 1956-1965 is getting old and won’t remember anything unless the original price is right is on RUclips to refresh their memories.
They are talking about the current show and it's one hour format that started in 1972 on CBS
@@chriskay1449 No, the one-hour format began in 1975. When it first began, it was half-hour, and the top two winners went to the showcase.
@@anthonyguarino4242 Well, there's always Buzzr. At least, the original TPIR run with Bill Cullen airs on there every Saturday morning, so there's a chance that those episodes might end up on RUclips thanks to a game show history buff out there
4:12/ Ain't it funny how time slips away? Reading the date on that honorary plaque makes me feel old all over! I was in my Junior year of High School the day CBS renamed Studio 33! God bless Bob Barker....
RIP Johnny Olsen and Rod Roddy and Mark Goodson and now Bob Barker himself
I want to thank so much the producers and the host of CBS Sunday mornings it has always been my favorite show going back to the days of Charles caralt.
This is such a great story. I am 61 years old and I can remember in the mid seventies watching the price is right with my grandmother every day when I would come home from lunch selling used cars Is in Pittsburgh.
Bob Barker was fantastic and so is Drew Cary and it's interesting how their personalities are completely different yet they still bring incredible success to the show it's a team effort.
Loved this show as a kid in the late 70’s and 80’s! Shout out to to Holly! One of the first models! I had a crush on her at 10 years old!
And Holly always had a crush on you. She misses you she says she
THEEEE greatest game show in the history of Television. The fabric of my existence since the late 80's for me.
Aw Drew that made me so sad when you said you tried to commit suicide, so glad you didn’t ❤️
This show was my childhood.
I'm turning 50 in ten days..I think it's Awesome just how many things are turning 50 this year...how sweet it is 🎈🎂
@@ChangingTides777
😳 Totally
Why did I think Bob Barker had passed on? The fact that he’s 98 and still alive is amazing! He will always be my favorite price is right host but drew Carey does a pretty good job filling his shoes
Because you got bad information someone online
@@MattJr4793 or because they keep listening to a certain troll named "Beijing0lympics," who's been pushing that fallacy since Bob retired in 2007...
@@LoyalmoonieProductions yeah I am sure it is someone like them if it isn't them specifically
Price is Right started 65 years ago in 1956 with Bill Cullen as the host. Was on from 1956 to 1965. I still watch it in reruns on tv. Not sure why they wouldn’t mention that. It was played different but it was still The Price is Right. They just changed the format but it’s still guessing prices.
That's the version that ran on NBC and ABC. This is CBS patting themselves on the back.
@@stevensiferd7104 that makes sense. I didn't know that.
the one thing I say that I miss about the Bob Barker are the elderly audience.
I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH ITS PLAYED SUCH AN INTRUGULY PART OF LIFE!! I DIDNT THINK IT WAS GOING TO LAST AFTER BOB LEFT BUT OVER TIME PROVED THAT THE SHOW IS BIGGER THAN THE HOST!!!
I grew up watching this show since I was like 4 or 5 years old. I am 47 years old now. That's over four decades. wOW !!!
Sitting here, watching this, made me think back to a much younger man and a much easier times.. Thanks for providing the entertainment for so many of my years, 😂
The Price is Right is my favorite game show of all time. I have been watching this since I was a baby after I was born in 1992. Memories! That's why I love the Price is Right.
Fond memories of being home sick from school and watching. Bob Barker and Drew are the greatest.
Love this show been watching on and off since I was little. Often I prayed for snow days just so I could. My all time favorite game plinko!
I thought the show started with Bill Cullen in the mid 1950's . This is a different version but the show has been around. This newer inception is 50 yrs old.
Thank you for your service mr. Carey I too have suffered from depression in the past and for one hour day it was and still is the happiest show on television.
I gotta say it gives me new perspective of the episode of NCIS he did where he played a Marine. I never knew he actually was one in real life.
I've never been a big fan of this show, but you gotta give props to anything on TV which isn't a news show whic has lasted that long
The Price is Right's first host was actually Bill Cullen, not Bob Barker. The show began as a daytime show on NBC in 1956 and was later picked up by ABC in 1963-64. Bob Barker took over in 1972 when the show moved to CBS. He hosted until 2007.
They are talking about the CBS era and the current one hour format. The NBC and ABC ones were only a half hour long and much different.
One of my favorite shows. If this ongoing double strike in Hollywood forces the show to move to Paramount Plus, it's gonna devastate all of America.
Drew grew the facial hair as a tribute to fellow game show host, the late, great Alex Trebek!!!
Someday, I will go to see The Price Is Right
The Price is Right was such a treat to watch as a kid, especially when you were home sick from school with a bowl of chicken noodle soup 🤗🤗🤗
One thing I remember about the price is right I remember that Monday morning September 4th 1972 with Bob Barker gave away his first car a 1972 Vega station wagon. He gave it away to a nice young lady 2,746. Basically she knew how much the car would be that would be $2,746. Now if you want a car on The Price is Right it could be somewhere around 50 to 100,000 and you wouldn't know it. As a matter of fact the most expensive car he gave away with a 157,000 Audi R8 to a woman to hear from Washington State named Sherry heil. Besides that that was a thrill for her to win a car like this. But now here it is the end of the price is rights 50 seasons and you would think. That's right I said it this is the end of The Price is Right 50th season and who would have thought that the Price is Right would be going that far. So here's to 50 more years of The Price is Right if it stays around. Because I can tell you right now it will be remembered as one of the highly anticipated game shows to be on TV for that long. So from September 4th 1972 to the present I can tell you this much right now it's going to be around for a long time. Who knows it's already surpassed The guiding light. When it started in 1952. But the Price is Right will live on and in for me. It will live on as one of the best game shows that CBS has ever put out. So let's see if Drew Carey can finally win an award for best game show host. Because right now at his age which is 64? I think he will do just fine. I think he'll stay around until he's about 84 or 85 years old. Who knows it might be short than that but I hope that Drew Carey can take the show as far as he can take it. Until the next game show host comes out.
I remember it back when Anitra Ford was one of the hostesses
Happy 50 seasons to the longest-running game show ever!
What a great story I remember watching that in the seventies going to my grandmother's house for lunch when I worked at a car dealership selling cars I would make it so I was always there to watch it with her I still think of her every time I hear that music and that was around 1978 79.
I'm 36, I remember watching this as a kid. Great story
I can't think of too many peoples' names, who, when mentioned, just make me smile. True humility can't be faked. Drew Carey is one such person. If you've never seen his first performance on the Tonight show watch it.
Good for you, Drew! As a fellow Clevelander, it’s great to see your success!
Drew is a genuine man, and a funny man too, go Drew
Don't forget the original version of The Price is Right, hosted by Bill Cullen, which ran from 1956 to 1965. I grew up watching and loving the Bob Barker version of TPIR, but TPIR was around (in a somewhat different format) even before the "new" Bob Barker version started 50 years ago.
I will admit, I was one of many who doubted the show could last with Drew Carey. And in those first few seasons, it was a little rough. But he made it his own and now it just seems natural to see him up there.
I hope the show hangs around. It's just never been the same since Bob Barker retired. The pandemic dealt it an even worse blow. I haven't seen a single episode in over a year. Saw some short clip where it looked like the "contestants" were in newlywed booth type seats. Really??
still the highlight of my weekdays
God I Wish that CBS would Come Back on Dish Network.
It's not? Weird
Bruh..
50 Seasons, And The Price Is Right, Is Still Going Strong.
LOVE DREW! And LOVE Who's Line! Wow this man can bring such JOY! See Drew? You've always had a gift!!! BTW, you are a very handsome guy, esp. in that uniform!
There were two other hosts on the show before Bob came to the price of right the show on TV was black and white no color back in 1950’s so Bob Parker wasn’t the first host but he was my favorite
In the 50s when it started, there was host Bill Cullen. The show is more than 50 years old.
@@tenossos so what’s your point isn’t that what the other person said as well your just repeating what the other person said we don’t need 2 to tell us that happened in 1950

God bless Drew Carey
It's good to see a young Bob Barker. It's been too long
Get PlutoTV. There's a Price is Right channel with all Bob Barker episodes from the 1980's!
Back in the early 70s we watched the show every day of the summer, and any day we were home sick! It was such a big deal when it went to a 1 hour show. 😎
Bob Barker will be 100 Soon in 2023.
I love that show.
I hope there was at least an ATTEMPT to interview Mr. Barker....but we got to see him for 2 seconds at the end. UGH
Thank you to Evelyn Warfel, for all her hard work running the show!
With drew Carey, the first black host
BOB was the BEST!!!
I couldn't get in and I was just number 12 from the door to see Bob Barker before retiring. Alway a sad day for me😞
It's really older than 50. It's more like 65. It stared in 1956. One of the original hosts was Bill Collen.R.I.P

overall its been on longer but its on the cbs version
The CBS version is 50 years old. Those other ones are different versions and not connected to this version.
I wasn’t even born yet when TPIR debuted in 1972…I was born two years later in 1974 (about a month before Nixon resigned as president).
Need to shout out to Bill Cullen who did it first
Whoever was in charge of finding TPIR replacement, I think there's a job waiting for you over at Sony, they sure could use your help.
Drew seems like such a down to earth dude
Drew Carey grant a make a wish for my neighbor's son. They said he's an amazing guy!
The Price is Right has been a great and jam-packed game show of wins, losses, cheers, and even some hilarious bloopers or mistakes.
After almost 50 years, it still remains, even though there are some dark moments and history about the sake itself- models and staff issues, if you will.
We need to protect this man
I love watching, but I really wish these videos had close captioning for people with hearing impairments.
He was originally not going to take the job but his mother charged his mind
I saw the 50th anniversary special, but they didn't show the fan video submissions. That's the only thing the special left out.
I have a photograph of my great aunt and uncle in the audience from the 80's. They were on vacation from Canada and had to get tickets!
Canadians? Pfft!
Rest In Peace Bob Barker- Died in 2023 at 99yrs old
Some legends never fade

How great for Drew! Just a good guy making it big and staying sooo grounded. How great is that?

The Price is Right started on NBC in 1956 and was on for about 10 years, hosted by Bill Cullen. I thought it was a big omission that that this was never mentioned. The show was described repeatedly as being 50 years old in the story (from 1970). [I see that MW Mann also mentioned this in the comments here.]
CBS Sunday Morning really should have noted this. They should run a correction and give credit to the late Bill Cullen.
This is a different show and they are talking about the CBS show that started in 1972. This is a completely different show. There is zero connection between the two other than the name. There is no correction that needs to be made.
The very 1st host in the 1950s was a great guy and polio survivor named Bill Cullen.
Damn is that you in the picture? Are from the 1800’s?
@@lewstone5430 no, that’s not her. It’s not possible to live that long from the 1800s and she wouldn’t be commenting that if she was 221 years old. There’s no way that human beings would live to be 200 years old or more.

I think here in England, we can only dream of a game show going as long as that. Countdown is well on track, though.
I love Drew as host of TPIR, but one thing I have never understood is why contestants feel they have the right to pick him up and spin him around. Like, what makes them think that’s OK?
Its the excitement of the moment. winning something expensive makes you lose proportion to reality.
Drew tells them it’s fine.
Bob Barker was NOT the original host. Bill Cullen was.
