Thank you for the idea! I just ordered two of them thanks to you. I do have an idea. With a piece of wood, one can make a wider slot to take in the complete blue rail. That should give the user a little more control. You can still make the center slot and that should be no problem. Also, cutting pieces of long plastic that is the same thickness as the tongue of the letters, will allow for something to push and maintain the letters together while pressing.
By the way, I highly recommend every leather worker get a 1 ton press. They are useful for many things and in the US are available for as little as $40 on sale at Harbor Freight. I've modified mine by drilling a hole in the end of the ram, and also drilling the side for a set screw. I can insert traditional leather stamping tools and make quick repetitive stamps, ideal for border work.

Riley Wyatt I got my cake stamp set today. It works really well!! Very happy apart from the 1/4” height. But that’s just personal preference. Going to make a wooden handle to give the arbor press something better to press down on.

What a clever idea, perfect if you don't do a huge amount of letter stamping. I think the key though is the wooden block you made and a good press, you would have problems using a vice,clamps or hammer to make the impression I think, the letters could be damaged by any off-axis forces or shocks.
What a fantastic find! I wonder what other plastic bits might serve as leather stamps? Might be worth a look at various children's toys like shape blocks and puzzles. I will now be looking at every item I see and thinking if I could use it as a stamp.

Hi Harry, genius idea ! I need to stamp a name on leather pieces for the jaws of a stitching pony. My 2mm veg tan natural leather is dry is and stiff, if after I stamp the leather I apply « Palma oil » balm, will the stamped name disappear ? I’m new to leather craft. Thanks !

Hi really because these have depth and are thus suitable for veg tan leather, and because the holder keeps them accurately spaced and in a straight line. Best wishes Harry

This is brilliant Harry. Can I get your opinion on hot press vs cold press on veg tanned leather than has been sealed and dyed? I've been thinking a hot press is the way to go for blind embossing, but this might be the answer I've been looking for at a much lower cost than a Kwikprint for example. Wondering how well the impression this lasted over time. I'm looking to emboss leather pacifier straps for baby with baby name or initials etc. So the leather is relatively small in size and only approx 2mm thick. Appreciate your advice. Trying to weigh up all the pros and cons before investing in machinery. Cheers
Hi This lasts perfectly well...the impression will not be as clear as with brass letters as the plastic is softer on the edges. Perhaps consider a Hex and Hit type set...look at Ian Atkinsons excellent review on RUclips.
A metalworking vice that clamps on to a bench or table. To get extra torque, you could put a length of metal pipe over the tightening handle and get stronger pressure.
Very brilliant idea! We ordered them from Amazon but when we got them they were on the tiny side, question, how big are each of the letters in the set you have,please.

Another idea are the cheap BBQ Branding Iron's. There is one for about £6 from china that has metal type the slides in a metal holder and retained by spring clip. The holder is normally screwed onto a handle but as it has a flat aluminium body It should be pressable.
Syed Qayyum my husband routed a block of wood to slide the entire thing in and it hammers just fine I load up the letters and slide it in the block and good to go. Thank you so much!!
Lily Collett Lilt it really needs to be veg tan...I don't think the faux leather would take an impression unless it's very pliable...perhaps try it on a sample...but I doubt it will work. Regards Harry.

Harry. A 'novice' question: that press, do you use that as wel for nails, rings etc. If yes, how? Second do you need to damp the leather first???

Probably not, but you could make a press out of wood, even an old pallet.

If you don't have a 1 tonne press, do you think a woodwork or metalwork vice might do?
It will have the pressure...alignment may be tricky.

Another good suggestion Michael - they should work fine..as do the cheap plastic letters for cookie personalisation.
What is the size of the word?
I notice a lot of the sets available now are 5mm high, the set I used was a bit larger so best to check with supplier.

Dianela Garcia - you could certainly accomplish it with scrap wood and C clamps or a bench vise. Experiment with scrap.
How does it work with chrome tanned and if I were to hammer it down ?
hammering you risk it jumping between strikes so pressing definitely would be the preferred route.
