  • In this video, Chuck shows us how we can enhance our basic letter stamps with simple and complex stamp combinations. Virtually any leather stamp can be used to add visual interest to your project and make your letters stand out. The creative possibilities are endless when it comes to stamp and letter combinations, so don't be afraid to play around with a few different stamps.

    0:32 Letter stamps are a great way to personalize a project, but the problem for me, the majority of the type styles out there are very basic. There's one, maybe two out there that I like that have some decoration, but the majority, very plain. Let's see if we can blow that up. Now, with a letter stamp. If you're new to leathercraft, let's go here first, because letter stamps have ruined more projects than anything else. Getting the letter upside down, doesn't matter how much work we've put into that project. It's a goner. So the camera is not going to pick this up, but right at the bottom of our letter stamp, there's a designator. As long as we can see that, our stamp is right side up.
    1:19 Let's just go with one, because all we're doing here, is getting an idea of the possibilities. Take a letter stamp and any tool you have in your shop and see what happens. But let's start easy, because here's what we're talking about. So we're going to embellish a letter stamp. Well, we can do this vertically or horizontal. Say we've got a biker wallet and we want to work that out, left or right. Or say a cell case, top to bottom.
    2:22 Now what we're doing here. Well, we've got a little decoration, but I'm trying to work stamps in, that have similar lines. Our letter stamps, they have a little bit of a heavier line. So let's look for stamps that have a little bit of a heavier line.
    4:44 As our designs start to get more and more complicated, it's a good idea to make a template. I'm using our pattern sheeting here, but notice I can just drop in small marks where my tools need to land.
    10:56 For this one, we're going to need a template, just to make sure everything lines up, but these are easy to make. I've simply created a square box, one inch square, 2.54 centimeters. And I'm going to work out from there. I'm just making marks where I want my stamps to land. We're going to make very light marks and then over stamp those. The great thing about the pattern sheeting, and I don't know if the camera can pick that up, but if I've got cross lines on this, I can tell exactly where that letter is. So let's center that on our letter. And now let's lightly mark our outside holes or our marked holes.

    Hey Chuck! Love your content. Could you do some more armor videos? Possibly an armor series? Chest, shoulder, etc. Maybe waist armor like a war belt. Also more in depth videos on hardening armor and dying armor with lighter colors. Thanks! God bless!

    Chuck; I have watched all of your videos over the years, love them all! You had one some time ago that was about sharpening edge bevelers, however you did not touch on the "BISSONETTE" edger. The one I have from Weaver leather made by Jerimiah Watt at "horseshoe tools" is getting to the point where it's not doing a very good job and I can't find anyone that sharpens these edger's, I am hoping that you could tell me, or point me in the right direction, or perhaps even do a new video on edger's.

    Could you make a video on making a pattern for a rifle stock cover. I can’t find a good video on one anywhere

      patterns are fairly easy to make, especially for something simple like a rifle stock. first figure out general size (width, length) you are looking for, then trim up a piece of paper into 4" strips. Start by taping one end of a strip to the stock and wrap around. Trim parts of the paper away as you wrap until you get the look and coverage that you are looking for in a stock cover. continue taping down strips until you have exactly what you want, then carefully make a straight cut down the paper so you can take it off. once its off, make simple straight cuts/slits in the paper until it lays flat. there you go, thats your pattern.

    Hey Chuck, Dave here:
    Are you familiar with the phrase, "sometimes, less is more?" There were a few of these where (in my opinion) you went a little overboard, and could have benefited from stopping short by a stamp or so? Again...just my opinion. I get the idea that this entire video is an exercise in creative thinking? Great concept, I just think you overdid it in a few places?
    I'll keep watching though. I almost always come away with some bit of new, useful info. thank you. You're right...I've destroyed more than one project with an upside down letter stamp. ;
