    i had surgery removed my prostate in Jan 2023. Major leakage problem in first month. Kegels exercises helped. Also, go to GYM to get strength in lower abdominal areas REALLY helped. Now, I do not need pad on normal day to day. Only needs pad if I need to walk/hiking for 3 or 5 hours - which may leak few drops. Do not give up, keep up exercise.

    My husband had his prostate removed 2 1/2 years ago and still has leakage. Even though he had prostate cancer, he regrets to this day having it removed. He was originally going for the proton treatment but changed his mind last minute. 😕 It has changed his life forever and not in a good way. Please men out there, please go over all options thoroughly with your doctor. Ask lots of questions before deciding on removal.

      I had my prostrate removed in 2004 because I had prostrate cancer . My Dr. told me about the different treatment options. He told me that if I had any form of radiation treatment if it came back there wouldn’t be anything else they could do for me . I had a friend and he opted for the chemicals and it came back and killed him because he had so much scar tissue from the treatments that they couldn’t do surgery . So your husband made the right decision .

      @@sharonbowie9741 I had my surgery on 10/19/23. I had a Gleason score of 8. My PET scans didn't show it spreading anywhere. I'm 64 years old. I've been working on my Kegel exercises, BUT I expect it might take a while to reap the benefits. Especially since I can't seem to find a pelvic floor specialist. It's hard not to be discouraged, but tell you husband to keep going. I've been tempted to try TENS therapy. I'm glad I did the surgery. From my research on the internet and talking to others. surgery is the best option if the cancer hasn't spread beyond the prostate. If radiation is tried, it hardens the tissue, which makes surgery much more difficult. I'm also amused at the suggestion in the video of setting a reminder alarm to go to the bathroom every 2 hours. I'm lucky to go past 20 minutes.

      I underwent surgery for Prostate Cancer in October 2023 during which my prostate was removed. I suffered from urine leakage for many weeks afterwards. The surgery also affected other parts of my life as well. Nevertheless, I am delighted to have had the surgery. The possibility of dying from Prostate Cancer scared the living daylights out of me. Believe me, your husband made the right decision in having his prostate removed.

In follow up they found it full of cancer. Just finished radical prostate surgery and removed bag yesterday.. Almost no bladder control. I go #1 every 5 minutes. I had a radical prostatectomy in January in 2016. I am still wearing pads during the day and diapers at night. I take two oxybutynin tablets every day. I recently tried not to take the medicine. I had a urine leakage that overflowed my diaper. I still have occasional accidents that overflow my diapers. I have stage three kidney disease. I have to drink water. Physiotherapy for three months helped me some but not that much. What you are saying in this video is very far from my reality. Eric .... I really appreciate your RUclips channel! My situation seems a little unique... maybe not. I had BiPolar TURP in June 2022. Everything is OK ( good urine flow and much less urgency, etc.) The I have leakage is right after I urinate. I do kegel/pelvic floor exercises daily. I plan to keep doing them, but wonder if there is a reason for this happening right after I urinate only? I'm thinking perhaps I'm in too much of a hurry and don't allow time for the urine to empty out of the penile portion of the urethra?? Have I just answered my own question? Thanks for tackling this niche market!

    • @DrEricLeckie

      Hey Pat, I appreciate your support as always. I agree, with you. Try this out: 1) sit down when urinating 2) when you stop urinating, continue sitting there and take 2 deep breaths in and out 3) once you finish the deep breathing perform a couple kegel contractions sitting on the toilet to clear any excess urine out of your urethra (pee tube) and then stand up and carry on. • @danieltaylor4819
      @danieltaylor4819 Год назад +6

      I agree. I believe the incidence of leakage is much, much, more than surgeons and patients admit to. I had robotic prostatectomy in 2008 and was led to believe that I'd be leak-free in a few months. I never became 100% dry, but was nearly dry for a number of years, losing only few drops per day. Now that I'm older (67) the leakage has increased. I believe it is due to the blood pressure medication that I take. It's not a constant drip or anything like that, but I do need to put on a pad if I'm going to be on my feet any length of time, as in out taking a walk, doing yard work for a few hours, that sort of thing. I've done thousands of Kegels over the years, and am now thinking about the sling.

      @@danieltaylor4819 my story of leakage is very similar…a few drips here and there if I’m not active…but if walking, look out, I’m going to leak! Such a great question. I’m actually going to make a video on this. Without knowing much about your situation, I would exceed more than 20 contractions a day to start off with. Perhaps try 5 contraction in the morning, 5 sitting a lunch, 5 sitting at dinner, 5 lying in bed at night. If you do too many, you will just fatigue your pelvic floor. Thanks for the comment!

I have not completed his eval yet just a quick consult during a regular therapy session. When i work with patients with nocturia i tell them to not restrict fluids to long before bed due to the increase in urine concentration in the bladder being irritating and causing urgency symptoms. I know you said the fluid restriction is temporary after the surgery, since he is 2 years post op do you feel it’s appropriate for me still recommend not restricting fluids until 2 hrs before bed? My main problem is at night. I do have wine 1-2 glasses early in the evening, by 7PM. I am careful to empty the bladder before sleep around 10 PM. I have no urge to go during the night because I have no urge at any time - no feeling at all. So I awake early with pad soaked - no feeling except a soggy pad! Aside from limiting fluid more after 3 pm and no wine is there anything else I should try? Thanks - Jon

    • @DrEricLeckie
      @DrEricLeckie  Год назад +1

      Hey Jon, thanks for the comment. Hmm my initial thoughts is that the 2 glasses of wine essentially puts the bladder to “sleep” making it unlikely that you’re truly emptying your bladder fully right before bed. That, and you might be getting a delayed diuretic effect from the alcohol whereby you start producing urine while you sleep. Combined on that, if you’ve had a big day of Kegel exercises and you’re body and pelvic floor are quite fatigued, you’re very likely to leak without notice in the middle of the night. Jon, is there any way you can give up the wine for 1 week to see if this makes a difference? Let me know how this goes and get back to me so we can keep trouble shooting - All the best, Eric

    Will incontinence heal by itself eventually if a person does not do pelvic floor exercises?

    • @DrEricLeckie
      @DrEricLeckie  Год назад +2

      It’s a good question and depends on the reason behind the incontinence. For example, if it’s simply age related incontinence then no, the person will need lifestyle modification and pelvic floor strengthening. If the person had a prostatectomy, the incontinence will partially improve on its own as they heal, however pelvic floor training will speed this process up and ensure the incontinence has fully recovered. I hope this helps

    Hi Dr. Leckie, looking for advice. I had aquablation 7 weeks ago. I took the catheter out two days post op. I was not able to pee, so they put it back in for 5 more days. I was doing about 50 kegal contractions per day. Slowly, I was seeing improvement. I was peeing about 150 cc whenever I could measure it. After 4 weeks, I had to get back to work, which usually involves traveling. I saw my DR before my first business trip and he said that I was voiding well and it would get better over time. During my first business trip, I noticed that I was getting the urge to go more often. I started dribbling more. A week ago and last night, I was having a really hard time peeing just prior to bed and for a few hours after going to bed. I was peeing about 50ml every 45 minutes or so, but then it got better by around 3 am and I started to pass about 100cc and I was able to get some rest. PS. I am stopping fluid intake about 3 hours before bed. I am drinking one cup of 1/2 caf coffee in the morning and maybe a cup of tea in the afternoon. I am drinking no alcohol. Do you have any thoughts on what is causing my set-back and how I can improve this?

    Had 2/3 of my prostate removed using HIFU. TURP was done approx. 2 months following using Greenlight laser. All in June n August of 2021 and still have leaking and ED problems. Told B4 surgeries that I would NOT have these problems.. Post-op care is (pardon the pun) piss-poor and I have stopped going (he got mad when/if I asked any Q's) as of this year ~~ nearly 2 yrs post op.

    Hi Dr. I just came across your video and thinking of having my prostate removed since I was told in August that I have prostate cancer after having a biopsy. In talking to one guy who had the surgery I think last year he never told me about the leaking. I’m now reading the comments and learning there is a big issue with leakages. Do u have a video of what a kegerator exercise is? I can start on doing this daily as I also need to prevent having kidney issues since my pcp and I are watching closely the numbers. I’ll subscribe to your page.

    I had robotic prostatectomy, bilateral nerve sparing. Surgery was 2 months ago. Still having significant problem with leaking; using the Depend male guards. Also have been on 5 mg tadalafil daily since surgery, have seen no effect whatsoever. Is it still too soon to be concerned that both these issues won't improve?

    The surgeons definitely downplay the side effects of the prostatectomy and scare you with the word cancer. Of course everyone will be scared to death when being told he has prostate cancer, although if you have a cancer grade 1 score 3+3, the probability that it grows is low and it will take many years to become life threatening if it ever happens before you die from something else. So, do not let you be overcome by fear and explore your options before going to a surgery that you may regret later.
