Given that the most expensive component in this set up is the battery and the cheapest are the nails I would recommend buying new nails and saving the battery's life for better projects.
Actually it does have a role. I restore vintage vehicles. Sometimes rare nuts and bolts of specific sizes may come in British Standard Whitworth sizes. That’s when abrading small quantities is useful. Having said that, I own a glass beads blasting cabinet
I have a old rock tumbler, but I use a vibratory tumbler for brass shell casing cleaning. You just have to use a more aggressive media than walnut shells to cut rust and you can add vinegar.
The before and after photos were taken at different exposures to make the result look better, but more importantly the drill would soon wear out running it constantly for that length of time.
Not just different exposures, different color temperatures too. I think the basic idea could work but it would take a lot longer than 2 hours and it would be a hell of a wear on a drill. Honestly I'd expect that the lid of the jar would fail from metal fatigue before the rust was gone. But using a rotary tumbler does work, if slowly.
Sir, I would like to beg you, on behalf of the battery pack, to please mount the drill into the vise using the grip part of the drill and NOT the battery pack. If the battery pack gets damaged it can not only be costly, but you can end up with a fire situation that is nearly unstoppable until the lithium is fully consumed by a very hot, very sparky, and very nasty dribbles below it, and very nasty fumes and gases which are not only unpleasant, but also not conducive to human life. For this purpose, I would employ a cheap corded drill. Also sir, if you would read the manual again, I bet you would find some small print that states that running your nice Stanley cordless drill at lower than full speed for an extended period of time will damage it. Specifically the switch and speed control circuit. The lower speeds are only for starting drilling and starting the insertion of a fastener, but never for very long at the slower speeds. Yes, I'm one of those geeks/nerds who reads every word of my instruction manuals. It saves me money in the long run from not having to fix or replace my tools. I make my money repairing things, much of the time because they never read the manual. Oh, I would bet good money that the Stanley drill is actually a Dewalt with the Stanley name on it. After all, Black and Decker, Dewalt, and Stanley are all under the same corporate roof, the same company. That is, unless it is counterfeit, but even then, even the real ones are made in China too, so go figure.
Just get a handblaster connected to an air compressor. We have some at work that are custom built by maint that are just vaccume fed from a 5 gallon bucket
Oddly some of the components were eaten entirely by the sand, whilst it made some extra different ones. I think you’d have to be reclaiming a LOT of nails to make the effort worth while…plus of course once the dreaded red rot has a hold it always returns in short order.
I do as you mentioned (using white vinegar) which is a great way to remove rust. Only drawback I find is the surface finish becomes dark grey after treatment.
Make that hole slightly off center and you might get better results? Might give it a lil oomph. But it's gotta be just slightly off center so you don't shake the whole thing apart.
Glad to see I'm not the only one silly enough to clamp my drill or belt sander or dremel into a vise. (The battery circ saw was a bit too sketchy to do a second time but I still have all ten fingers) lol
My 15,000 gallon pickle jar broke after the C10 cab rolled over after 9 turns. I lost 8,000 lbs. of media on the driveway and took a 4 days to clean it and glass up. Drill quit working! Bigger bolt?
Knights servents used to clean the chain mail armor this way 1000 years ago. Didn't have a drill but rolling a drum with the armour and sand in it did the job.
The DIY Rust Removal idea is a pretty good one but I wouldn't use a Glass Bottle for obvious reasons. Maybe I'd even use a larger Plastic Liter Bottle instead. You get more space for more stuff and you Won't have to worry about breaking the Glass....
I'd dangle the drill & jar combo over the edge of your bench, so jar is upright. Clamp or weight & support drill so it stays put, and use a spring clamp on the trigger for easy on and off. Great idea. Cheap and easy.
i hope this is a joke ,you wasted 2 hours worth of battery power , where you could have just used a wire wheel attachment on the drill that would have taken 2 minutes to clean them parts .
Ill give you points for ingenuity. However, you made a complicated solution for a simple problem. You would have been better off just using rust remover or a small, cheap sonic cleaner and would have gotten better results in less time.
vnteresting, I have 2 questions What rotation time did you use on the cordless drill? on electric drill, faster, have you tried? if so, with what results?
i would have taken a metal can. even though glass can be as hard as steel, it can still break without warning, posing a risk of injury.a friend used an old concrete mixer.
I use a cheap $25 kids Rock Tumbler and the clean bag play sand from Lowes and you dont have to worry about a drill battery running down, and you can let it go all night
If you reload ammo, use your case tumbler and an abrasive media such as sand, rice, small ball bearings . . . whatever. Wonderful for cleaning fasteners and small parts.

I’de just use either battery acid or Muriatic Acid “ hydrochloric” used fir swimming pools. Leave uncovered and away from all sparks as it will give off hydrogen gas. Then thoroughly flush with a mixture of water and baking soda. Probably less than 30 min and better results. However dealing with dangerous acid, take all necessary actions to protect eyes, skin, clothing and don’t breath fumes which are irritating and explosive and give off heat. I would suggest outside in heavy steel container or glass jar, maybe even put in ice water bath so the heat doesn’t cause it to ignite and blow up in your face if you are near it when bubbling.
How am I suppose to fit my truck into that jar??.....I guess I need to pop in the movie "Honey I shrunk the Kids" to build a reducer machine!!.....But that will be more expensive than buying a Harbor Freight sandblaster unit!!.....Scratching my head here on this design!!
my only comment.. WHY use a glass jar?if you want to make a parts tumbler, make it with something that wont shatter when you accidently depress the trigger of the drill and send jar, lid, and metal parts flying all over the place?

Nobody likes a critic, except another one. He applied critical thinking and built a inexpensive tool, that works ! You, not so much. Just saying 🖖🏻✌🏻
Agree with JL, its the concept thats being demonstrated.
I have that exact same stanley driver. Lasted now 6 years with the two original batteries, and no real degrading yet on them. Use it frequently.
This process might be OK for restoring small vintage motorcycle parts. But batteries are expensive.
2:09 I wouldn't advise clamping your battery pack in a vice.
I was fascinated then horrified when you put the drill battery casing in the vice.. With Lithium batteries in it!!!! 💥💥💥💥
😅🤣😂😉
Larger items just use a concrete mixer with a few shovels off ballast
I have a old rock tumbler, but I use a vibratory tumbler for brass shell casing cleaning. You just have to use a more aggressive media than walnut shells to cut rust and you can add vinegar.
bag play sand from Lowes its cheap too
If your going to do this put the drill on its back so the jar is upright. This will be less strain on the bearings
The before and after photos were taken at different exposures to make the result look better, but more importantly the drill would soon wear out running it constantly for that length of time.
the drill will become wobbly to. The main idea isnt bad
Only six out of ten items are shown at the end. Presumably four items were still too rusty to show.
With a battery that size, wouldnt last that long
if a new drill they normally have a years manufacture warranty problem solved

Thank you fire marshal bill! 😂
Great now I just have to get a jar large enough to fit my car in. But I’m gonna save so much money from not having a sandblaster.
FULL ROTISSERIE!!!
That oversized drill might run you a few dollars also. Probably should avoid battery powered ones...
Just get a handblaster connected to an air compressor. We have some at work that are custom built by maint that are just vaccume fed from a 5 gallon bucket
Hahahahaha use the outdoor pig rotisserie 😅😅
Świetny pomysł w betoniarce jeszcze lepiej wyjdzie 😀😀😀👌pozdrawiam
This is a display of how well a Stanley drill is made. I would have expected smoke to be coming out after two hours!!!
If the drill won't last 2 hrs it's a piece of shit obviously you don't use battery tools very much go back to your Lego 🤫🤫🤫💯🇦🇺

Good concept. Half-assed execution.
Eh not a perfect job. But it helped. And would it work on a bigger application. Like a wrench
Just put vinegar in the jar and put the lid on, wait 24 hours and rinse. Those will be shiny new!
I do as you mentioned (using white vinegar) which is a great way to remove rust. Only drawback I find is the surface finish becomes dark grey after treatment.
@@SadAnorak Depending on level of rust you might need to give it a quick brushing and rinse with water.
