The reason why spike toys were quadrapeds in the early days was because when Laura Faust first designed Spike he was on all fours. So the toy manufacturers took the design of the four legged spike and ran with it until they got their money's worth and the parents started complaining due to the lack of show accuracy. This is also the reason why celestia was pink until the movie toys and gen 4.5
Thankfully, Celestia was actually white for much longer than that. Her brushable pony was white, as early as the crystal empire line from 2012. I think this was because Princess Cadance got introduced which was also a pink pony, so they could make Celestia white
More like it never burnt out to begin with, much like how the Trekkies remained strong even long After the Original Star Trek ended, the Bronies still remain strong even after MLP:FiM ended.
I have no idea why, but something tells me that the toy designers were given early concept art to work with and not the finished version or updated concept art. Given that it’s “toy series first; show second” it wouldn’t be surprising if the toys are made ahead of time before the show airs another season. Hence maybe why the sirens are depicted as ponies, since they may have been planned to be like Sunset Shimmer (or at least have pony forms) before they were changed; sapphire shores is nothing like how she’s supposed to be; spike being on all fours instead of being bipedal, and so on. Not sure about Celestia or Applejack. For Celestia, it could have been Hasbro or the toy creators stepping in to tap into the “research” on what color kids would be attracted to more, as theorized by many. For applejack, maybe they struggled to get the hat right, or thought that kids wouldn’t like the hat, and thus, kept it out of other designs (hence why it doesn’t exist on toys that *aren’t* recolors).
I know that once Cadance was introduced, that was when Celestia toys had the correct colors. So I’d believe that they made Celestia pink to sell more toys to girls
Hasbro has done this before with the likes of Jem and the Holograms like using early concepts to base the toys around. For example the first Jem doll she has an "M" at the end of her guitar this is because before her name was finalised as Jem she was called M. mlp is no different. I think this happens because they want the toys ready for when the show comes out, if they waited for finalisations the toys probably wouldn't be ready in time to be sold with the show releases. Hasbro has long since gotten better with this though since they have come to realise that fans both young and old want more accurate toys.
Take this with a grain of salt, because I don't know if I remember it right, but pink Celestia wasn't really a success, because the kids didn't liked that it wasn't accurate, that's why they made Cadence an alicorn instead of a unicorn, so they could use their failed attempt for something and it worked out better for it.
About Spike: I believe in “Feeling Pinkie Keen” when the ponies are running from the hydra, Spike is running on all fours on top of a branch. I’ve not watched the episode in a looong time, however. I would also assume Spike being on all fours was so he would stand up better. Most bipedal dolls have trouble standing up, after all
Not just that episode, in Princess Twilight Sparkle Part 2 as well! There are probably other episodes but regardless of how many episodes he’s quadruped, Spike is a major biped. So… shame on Hasbro, I guess?
Back when the mini figure line first came out as well as the blindbags you could buy all of the Mane 6 other than flutteshy in individual boxes. I was initially disappointed that they hadn't released her like the others. Then I saw the first wave of blindbags and completely understood why.

I remember Sapphire Shores, babeh! I liked how most of the pop stars and celebs in Equestria were Earth Ponies. And I LOVE how cute EP Sonata Dusk is! I have kinna a soft spot for EPs. Speaking of which, The Silver Spoon Minifig (blindbag size) can either have purple eyes (accurate) if you get her with Twist-A-Loo (back to that in a moment) and Cheerilee set, but if you get her with Diamond Dazzle Tiara (I'll deal with you later!) with the Mane6 and others in the Walmart Exclusive multi-set then Silver's eyes will be pink. This never fails and was never corrected. Twist-a-loo was never a name uttered in the show and neither was Diamond DAZZLE Tiara. Fun fact: we actually do see Spike on all fours a few times in the show! Example: "Feeling Pinkie Keen" ~15:27; "Hurricane Fluttershy" ~13:10 Though it's literally like a few seconds combined so your point still stands lol
It's weird how Hasbro Prioritized toys over the show But I have never been into collection MLP toys and always been into memorizing every single line from the show

For spike I think part of him being on 4 legs is for balance reasons. It’s easier for a figure to stand up with more support distribution. But that’s just my two cents!
2:35 I didn't know that there was a toy that actually depicted her with a Cutie Mark! I actually wrote a story years ago about the CMC's helping Sapphire get her Cutie Mark, and I had to invent one for her (I came up with a dolphin wearing the headdress that Rarity made for her in Season 4).
damn, that HORRIBLE pink Celestia brings me back xDDD I also remember when the first line of G4 ponies were all either Rainbow Dash or Twilight models with different colors, what a cheap stinky merch the show used to have
i think Luna is the worst. she was my favourite as a kid (still is) but there were barely any show accurate toys of her. they made her purple with blue, pink and purple hair when in the show shes blue and has blue hair.
I also noticed that shadowbolts in friend ship games toyline Didn't have the pony counterparts on the box like the dazzlings would. Same with Gloriousa Daisy, who didn't get her pony counterpart either
1:00 Celestia is actually a shade of very pale pink in the show, and she was intended to be pink at the begining. Edit: Most of the blind bags were randomly coloured and named, so the name was re-used in the show. Hasbro gave the animators a list of "usable names" they could use and its likely names were either shared on the list, or something else. This is how Lickidy Splits, Dusty and Firefly's names got re-used, they were in the list of possible names Hasbro supplied them for use and thus they were used. These were G1 pony names so Hasbro could get away with re-using them easily.
Another awesome video, definitely excited to see more uploads from you man 💯. One thing that's similar to Applejack toys lacking hats is costumes of Applejack on irl stage/musical performances also lacking her hat. Honestly a bit of an odd phenomenon if you think about it.
spike originally was supposed to be on all 4. They changed that pretty late into developement, companies are given reference sheets for characters way before the show premieres so they can release them at the same time as the show releases, many companies probably got that old reference sheet because of that.
I think the purple ones are based on her appearance in the original two parter. They're not usually the right shade of purple, but I think that's what they were going for.
Ok here are a few I noticed in the brushable figures ... First Twilight's mane in the toys. Her hair is dark blue with pink and purple highlights.... Like why did they make her hair in the toys pink and purple? Probably just to appeal to little girls... Another one is princess Luna... WHY IS SHE PURPLE?!? There is also rainbow dash which doesn't have the full rainbow in her mane..? I never understood why. I feel robbed. Also Fluttershy's eyes later on are really weird ... Flower wishes at one point was a pegasus????? And princess Skystar is crosseyed. These are just a few. I think Hasbro is drunk....
@@xclownieXDx yeah,,,,, but I tend to just point and laugh at her honestly because her plan in the season 2 finale was mind bogglingly stupid and it really detracted from the threat factor posed by her and her army
Spike on all fours is based on concept art from the show, Spike was originally going to walk on all fours most of the time and sometimes stand up on two legs.
I have the pink princess Celestia and I got it when I was young. Then I threw away the box so I didn't know who she was and just assumed she was Princess Cadence..
This isn’t exactly a toy inaccuracy but I find the ponies packaged with dvds very funny.. especially this twilight I got at everfree new last year..she was packaged with applebuck season? I understand the background ponies like Lyra packaged with random episodes cause yknow there wasn’t a standout episode with them in it yet, (ex:Lyra packaged with lesson zero) I also like the rainbow dash, Fluttershy, Twilight, and pinkie packaged with the super cider squeezy 6000 with no applejack in sight lol
I find some of these really funny. Because not only are the choices so..needless? In most cases- But even I'm cases where a choice was needed- They could have made a BETTER one. Like the Saffire Shores. She's a yellow earth pony with poofy hair. If you don't want to make a new mold for her- Use Pinkiepie. The earth pony with poofy hair. The coloring is still a miss, but honestly could have been overlooked had she at least been still-an earth pony with poofy hair. Pink Celestia was likely because Hasbro thought a pink princess would sell better with girls (hense why she suddenly became white in toys AFTER Princess Cadance was introduced. An ACTUAL pink princess.) But like. Little girls don't want needlessly pink ponies. We wanted PRINCESS CELESTIA. Even as a kid I was so annoyed by her not being accurate. Same thing goes for Applejack. I can bet you they made her hat blue in toys because they thought little girls wouldn't like her normal brown hat- BUT WE WANTED THE NORMAL BROWN HAT. We wanted toys that matched the show. Rainbowdashes hair has always annoyed me. It bugs me how they chose to color it similarly to earlier versions of Rainbow (where the warm and cold colors were split between her hair and tail) but even then, I always felt like I could have forgave it more if they did it RIGHT by putting the green with the blue and purple. So that her tail doesn't just mesh into a weird indigo color. Of course I would have preferred you give her her actual hair, since like..there was enough space, honestly, but if you HAD to decide up the rainbow-at least do it evenly. Yanno? I also really hated the random princesses. Like that yellow Celestia toy. Or the purple one. Or princess skyler. .-. It annoyed me that they were making up random princess just to fill shelves- all while Luna and Cadance still didn't have variety in their own figures. (Or in Lunas case, didn't have her own figure at all! The closest she had for awhile was a Nightmare Moon figure from a limited edition set. And its..uuurgh how ponies outside of Celesita were also given a pink coat for no reason. Like twinkle shine. She's a background pony- why randomly make her pink?? Now she just looks like pinkie pie. Oh also- Rainbowshy. When they used rainbows mini fig mold for fluttershy- what was the point?? You went through the trouble of making molds for the other five but for some reason fluttershy was deemed basic enough to be slapped onto rainbowdash?? Especially since there's so many background pegasi that would have worked better on a fluttershy shape. Instead they made ONE pegasi mini fig mold and just slapped everyone on it regaurdless of personality or design.
I remember the pink Celestia it use to make me so upset as a kid because I wanted the none pink version. 💀 still hate that they made her pink in a lot of merchandise.
Yeah, as a MLP Fan and sort of a Collector still, I always wonderes that, why some toys didn't looked so accurate as the tv show ones, like the earliest versions cause then in g4.5 like the reboot ponies and for the MLP Movie (2017) They looked more accurate even with their colors
I remember owning a blindbag figure of Fluttershy. It was just a Rainbow Dash recolour which is kinda wierd considering that she's literally one of the main characters?
But I was looking this up I actually noticed that sapphire stone the blind bag if Google is correct it came out in 2012 while the Pony version of the show came out with 2014 if my guess is possibly that they decided to reuse the Blind Bag character and just change her design. This is also all relying if the wikis and Google is correct. My best guess is at the figurine came first but then they're like you know what we're going to change it for the show
I remember owning so many MLP toys that are very inaccurate to their show counterparts like a very ugly recolor or faces not lining up making it look derpy. I still have most of them years later
Oddly enough, the one instance he DOES crawl on all fours is during a scene in "Secret of My Excess" when he starts to devolve into a more bestial state, but like... no way they were going to make a toy based on that moment, ha ha
I love that unicorn Sapphire Shores blind bag, she just encapsulates Hasbro’s laziness and lack of quality control for me! Sadly, the Friendship is Magic Collection Sapphire Shores is even less accurate as both her eyes are looking backwards! Another inaccurate toy in my collection is a Cutie Mark Crew figure of Sandbar - as we all know, he’s an earth pony in the show, but this CMC figure has wings … 🤷♂️
I'd love a part 2! A great example could be the Star Swirl brushable that came with raritys boutique iirc and is some random earth pony who just so happens to have starswirls name
Every single Twilight toy is a completely different color scheme than her, except for her first G5 figure and the redesigned Equestria Girls. For the record: Coat: lavender on show, magenta on toys Hair: dark blue with violet and rose streaks on show, equally pink and violet on toys Eyes: violet on show, medium-to-light purple on toys
i had a fluttershy figure at one point that was a reskin of rainbow dash, same hair and everything, before they redesigned her to be on all fours and with the longer hair...unsure if you'd like to include this or not
In the early and mid 2010's, I was a big fan of Applejack, and when I see a model of Applejack, I don't see the hat, like THAT MAKES ME UPSET BECAUSE SHE MOSTLY USES THE HAT AND AS MUCH as the hat doesn't resemble an apple references, there's some connection between Aj and her hat
Yeah the celestia being pink stuff was a sales thing like u said, apparently the reasoning was because they thought pink would sell better to little girls but eventually they started making her show accurate
0:43 i bought that exact applejack- 0:46 that exact set too :O I guess they put spike on all fours to make him stand easier? Not sure If I remember correctly that series of figures used to have a few very specific moulds, so most of the characters were limited to very few shapes Not entirely sure how they messed up sapphire shores that bad tho
I actually had the pony from the thumbnail, but she had rarities hair for some reason. I always thought they just messed up the colors for rarities toy
That was awesome! Part 2 should have pink Twinkleshine, Earth Pony Starswirl the Bearded (yes, really) from the Best Gift Ever blind boxes, and the blind bag Fluttershy with the Rainbow Dash mould. There is also a toy-exclusive female blue Earth pony named Star Swirl, but I don’t think she’d count - she’s more like a blue version of G3 Star Swirl.
1:30 it’s because in the movie they state that they used to disguise as pony’s. That could also explain the earth pony and unicorn thing they probably could disguise as any type of pony
I'm pretty sure the Applejack and Spike toys are based on early designs. Toys brands often do that to have the toys ready by the time the show airs, and in Lauren Faust's earliest designs, Applejack had no hat, and Spike crawled on all fours.
One moment that stuck out to me as Spike on all fours was the season 4 premiere when he ran up a tree to get a view from above. It was puzzling and I wondered why he did that.
The reason why they couldn't make the real body is because it costs money to make new designs and Hasbro was kind of running out I think so in a few blind bag series they stopped making new designs but like in series 12 or whatever they started making some new designs when they had the money so yeah that's why they were not able to make sapphire shores.
So for Queen Celestia, Apple Jack and Spike, they were characters which were conceived before the show's debut, were written inside the show bible, because the show was made to sell toys, they decided that when the finished the show bible, they would give it to manufactures so when the show released they were all prepared to ship the toys to stores In the show bible, Queen Celestia was drawn in sketch and was coloured pink by the manufactures to appeal to the younger girl demographic, Apple Jack used to not wear a hat in the show bible, which is probably why she does not wear on in merchandising Spike was drawn in sketch while standing on all 4's, so the manufactures decided that the character was going to on 4's in the show This is a common practice in the busissness as if the merch were to come out same day or even before, it would sell better than if it were to come out a couple of weeks later minimum. Especially because the show was made to sell merchandise, as you said, Toy Brand first, then a TV show.
Also if you are going to question why the cover has the official show version, this is because they would do the outside packaging after the modelling, as modelling is much more complicated and stock of the plastic needed to sell is also important, while the cover can be changed quite easily
Early concept art of Spike has him walking on all 4s as well. It changed by the time the show was actually made, but that could be why the toys are like that.

I really like where this channel is going. I hope you do good in the future!
Holy f-
You got a LOT more subscribers in under a week following this video. Congratulations!
Actually the Reason for spike i thing is based on a concep art made by lauren faust of spike was in 4 legs and hasbro was so lazy to change the mold
spike originally was supposed to be on all 4. They changed that pretty late into developement, companies are given reference sheets for characters way before the show premieres so they can release them at the same time as the show releases, many companies probably got that old reference sheet because of that.
The toy version for Princess Luna always makes her purple instead of her dark blue colour in the show
I think the purple ones are based on her appearance in the original two parter. They're not usually the right shade of purple, but I think that's what they were going for.
@@wendyheatherwood No she was light blue in the original 2 parter
@@startheangel9760 To me it looks like a desaturated purple, close to blue but still a bit too warm.
I love the fact that mlp fandom is still up and strong ❤ chrysalis will forever be my favorite pony
I'm also glad this fandom is still alive and well but that's literally the strangest favorite pony I've heard so far. valid but strange
@@blitzn00dle50she’s just so iconic lmao
@@xclownieXDx yeah,,,,, but I tend to just point and laugh at her honestly because her plan in the season 2 finale was mind bogglingly stupid and it really detracted from the threat factor posed by her and her army
bughorse good
Spike on all fours is based on concept art from the show, Spike was originally going to walk on all fours most of the time and sometimes stand up on two legs.
1:13 only guess I have is stability since Spike isn’t exactly the most stable character to stand on 2 bases
His leg would help
@@saltysalt844 Yeah that’s what I mean by 2 bases
@@MooseShower oh no i mean his tail, his tail would act as third leg
pls keep making mlp videos,i know ur channel is still small but by time you will become big and better than ever!!!
i shall
Oh God poor spike ;-;
looks like helping Twilight has done a number on his back LOL
I think he looks cute on all fours!
I have the pink princess Celestia and I got it when I was young. Then I threw away the box so I didn't know who she was and just assumed she was Princess Cadence..
My mom said that mlp fans who are over 16 is because they didn't leave adolescence, I don't think it's like that.
i have a white princess celestia but her wings fade to purple
This isn’t exactly a toy inaccuracy but I find the ponies packaged with dvds very funny..
especially this twilight I got at everfree new last year..she was packaged with applebuck season?
I understand the background ponies like Lyra packaged with random episodes cause yknow there wasn’t a standout episode with them in it yet, (ex:Lyra packaged with lesson zero)
I also like the rainbow dash, Fluttershy, Twilight, and pinkie packaged with the super cider squeezy 6000 with no applejack in sight lol
they could have used Slice of Life
I find some of these really funny. Because not only are the choices so..needless? In most cases-
But even I'm cases where a choice was needed- They could have made a BETTER one.
Like the Saffire Shores.
She's a yellow earth pony with poofy hair.
If you don't want to make a new mold for her-
Use Pinkiepie.
An ACTUAL pink princess.)
But like.
Instead they made ONE pegasi mini fig mold and just slapped everyone on it regaurdless of personality or design.
agreed.
0:08 I HAD THAT WHEN I WAS A CHILDDDD!!!! I GOT IT FROM SAVERS THX FOR BRINGING BACK MY CHILDHOOD ITS SO NOSTALGIC
I remember the pink Celestia it use to make me so upset as a kid because I wanted the none pink version. 💀 still hate that they made her pink in a lot of merchandise.
1:05 That looks a lot more like princess cadance
odd since apparently they introduced Cadence just so that they can sell toys of an actual pink princess
hope you get a ton of subscribers, this is great content
i appreciate that, thanks!
0:54 the fact we never got a red pony was a crime
Yeah, as a MLP Fan and sort of a Collector still, I always wonderes that, why some toys didn't looked so accurate as the tv show ones, like the earliest versions cause then in g4.5 like the reboot ponies and for the MLP Movie (2017) They looked more accurate even with their colors
I remember owning a blindbag figure of Fluttershy. It was just a Rainbow Dash recolour which is kinda wierd considering that she's literally one of the main characters?
i hate how i can't watch any piece of my little pony media video without seeing firecracker burst
My best guess is at the figurine came first but then they're like you know what we're going to change it for the show
2:40 Hello there, I actually have that figure, and I can confirm that she has a seashell cm
awesome
I remember owning so many MLP toys that are very inaccurate to their show counterparts like a very ugly recolor or faces not lining up making it look derpy.
I still have most of them years later
Okay but like, Princess Skyla was a really cute toy pony, and when i was younger i absolutely loved her lol
0:43 I had this apple jack as a kid and I so badly wanted to paint her hat brown because I was so mad that it was green.
This is why I never asked my mom to buy me mlp toys as a kid because most of them look different
smart kid
The first spike toy being on all 4s is probably because it was made right before the show actually aired and they had no idea lol
Oddly enough, the one instance he DOES crawl on all fours is during a scene in "Secret of My Excess" when he starts to devolve into a more bestial state, but like... no way they were going to make a toy based on that moment, ha ha
1:05 I had that toy. I was literally so proud of having this and some sort of cadence in this form I can't explain lol
Don't know if someone already mentioned this but twinkleshine being pink in some merchandise but white in the show
love ur vids hope u make more u inspired me to make my custom mlp charecter
sounds cool! I'd love to see it!
When I got a Celestia doll as a kid. I was so confused why she was pink.
yeah. it seems as if hasbro is (or at least was) super out of touch with the majority of the fanbase that wanted actual accurate toys.
@@EffMinus EXACTLY. Little me wanted the pony dolls to look exactly like the ones I saw on TV.
I remember having some toys when I was young and still have them to like I just recolored them to look like from the show
The Dazzlings in the pony version are sooo pretty!Way better than in the show.
I believe the crawling Spike could be a remnant from the original Show Bible that was leaked rather recently
Funko pops are the most adorable and accurate to the show.
I have a feeling that someone who makes these toys has never watched the actual show.
I have a white Celestia. She's a McDonald's toy I found at Savers.
For the record:
Coat: lavender on show, magenta on toys
Hair: dark blue with violet and rose streaks on show, equally pink and violet on toys
Eyes: violet on show, medium-to-light purple on toys
i always wondered why the twilight toys gave her purple hair with pink streaks instead of blue hair with pink and purple streaks
Lil girls
i had a fluttershy figure at one point that was a reskin of rainbow dash, same hair and everything, before they redesigned her to be on all fours and with the longer hair...unsure if you'd like to include this or not
Spike's concept design has him on all fours ^_^
In the early and mid 2010's, I was a big fan of Applejack, and when I see a model of Applejack, I don't see the hat, like THAT MAKES ME UPSET BECAUSE SHE MOSTLY USES THE HAT AND AS MUCH as the hat doesn't resemble an apple references, there's some connection between Aj and her hat
Yeah the celestia being pink stuff was a sales thing like u said, apparently the reasoning was because they thought pink would sell better to little girls but eventually they started making her show accurate
In the mlp movie pirate set Applejack has a BROWN hat. I put it on my bagged pony Applejack.
0:43 i bought that exact applejack-
0:46 that exact set too :O
I guess they put spike on all fours to make him stand easier? Not sure
If I remember correctly that series of figures used to have a few very specific moulds, so most of the characters were limited to very few shapes
Not entirely sure how they messed up sapphire shores that bad tho
I actually had the pony from the thumbnail, but she had rarities hair for some reason. I always thought they just messed up the colors for rarities toy
Georgian spotted
That was awesome! Part 2 should have pink Twinkleshine, Earth Pony Starswirl the Bearded (yes, really) from the Best Gift Ever blind boxes, and the blind bag Fluttershy with the Rainbow Dash mould. There is also a toy-exclusive female blue Earth pony named Star Swirl, but I don’t think she’d count - she’s more like a blue version of G3 Star Swirl.
thanks! would you like credit for the ideas?
@@EffMinus Yes please!
@@EffMinus By the way, my username is pronounced 'deck is much juvenile'.
This was on my recomended for 3 days and i was like ill just watch it and ngl entertained
tahnk
One moment that stuck out to me as Spike on all fours was the season 4 premiere when he ran up a tree to get a view from above. It was puzzling and I wondered why he did that.
The reason why they couldn't make the real body is because it costs money to make new designs and Hasbro was kind of running out I think so in a few blind bag series they stopped making new designs but like in series 12 or whatever they started making some new designs when they had the money so yeah that's why they were not able to make sapphire shores.
So for Queen Celestia, Apple Jack and Spike, they were characters which were conceived before the show's debut, were written inside the show bible, because the show was made to sell toys, they decided that when the finished the show bible, they would give it to manufactures so when the show released they were all prepared to ship the toys to stores
In the show bible, Queen Celestia was drawn in sketch and was coloured pink by the manufactures to appeal to the younger girl demographic,
Apple Jack used to not wear a hat in the show bible, which is probably why she does not wear on in merchandising
Spike was drawn in sketch while standing on all 4's, so the manufactures decided that the character was going to on 4's in the show
This is a common practice in the busissness as if the merch were to come out same day or even before, it would sell better than if it were to come out a couple of weeks later minimum.
*Princess Celestia
RUclips keeps recommending you to me so, I'll sub. Why not?
smart choice!
Early concept art of Spike has him walking on all 4s as well. It changed by the time the show was actually made, but that could be why the toys are like that.
