Hi Josh please can you throw more light on the INSERT TEXT QUESTIONS in the reading sections of the Toefl test , I am finding it a little bit difficult 😞
We have lectures about all question types included in our Score Builder Program. - tstprep.com/store/toefl-score-builder-program/ Also, the program includes tons of practice materials for improving your reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills. The program is not free, but you can email to contact@tstprep.com if you want to know more about our courses and possible discounts.
Hi Josh, first, thanks for all the videos! I was wondering why you used in your answer for question 1 not your own template? As I saw in the answer sheet you had the the template : Introduction Body paragraph 1: all the statements reading passage Body paragraph 2: all the statements listening passage Conclusion. Instead of 3 bodygraphs with the statement of the reading passage against the statement of the listening passage. Thanks!
The lecturer in the lecture was basically stacking up a set of arguments that contrast and criticize the views and opinions of the people presented in the passage. Here's a summary of the arguments delivered in the passage. Firstly, people feel that high divorce rate is directly connected to the increasing freedom that women are getting. Secondly, economic stability is considered to be a key element of a stable relationship. This implies that divorces can be a result of inability to sustain a family with the low income that some men or a family as a whole gets. Thirdly, it's strongly emphasized in the passage that divorce rate has increased in 21st century because people are into instant gratification. The main argument is that people are not emotionally skilled or mature enough to solve all their problems in a relationship and thereby resort to a divorce for instant relief. The lecturer starts by criticising the statistics posed in the passage. She argues that It's not true that 50% of the marriages are ending in divorce. She says that it's an outdated stat from 1980s. In the same way, she argues that it's not true that the number of divorces will increase in the following years. It's expected to decrease. She offers potential counter -arguments to all the aforementioned points from the passage. Firstly, she argues that it's not rational to blame only the women for a divorce because a marriage is a contract between a male and a female. Both of them hold equal responsibility for the divorce, in general. She argues that there countries in the world were the men and women have almost equal rights and yet the number of divorces are very less. Secondly, she says that economic concerns hardly matter while taking decision towards divorce because there are lot of rich countries where the divorce rates are insanely high. And in contrast, there are lot of poor countries with very less number of divorces happening all through the year. Lastly, the complain against the millineals that they lack emotional maturity and skills that are required to solve their problems in the relationship is disputed by the lecturer. She also argues that a lot of external support in the form of marriage counselors, psychiatrists..etc, are available now to the millineal couples and they approach these experts without any hesitation. She appreciates this lack of stigma around such external helps, among the millineals. In conclusion, The lecture attempts to disprove all the arguments posed in the passage explaining the causes of increase in divorce rate.
Hello Josh, Thank you very much for helping students prepare for their TOEFL exams. The following is my independent writing response, and I wonder if you would please provide me with any feedback. Although both advantages and disadvantages social media brings to interpersonal relationships co-exist, it creates more opportunities for people to make new friends and build new relationships. International marriage may be an excellent example. Before social media existed, there were rare chances for people from different countries to get to know each other. However, today, it is not uncommon for an American man’s wife to be from China or any other Asian country. Additionally, I believe that the quality of social connections depends not on where you keep your relationship but on how much heart you would like to put on it. For example, even two people living in different countries can maintain their strong friendship through phone calls or videos, while two people who see each other daily are never friends. In this regard, I think social media does not diminish any social connections but creates more opportunities for new relationships. Best, Sarah
Hello Josh , I wanted to ask you a question . When taking exams, i can not help but panic and forget all the templates or important rules i have learned. During our ten minute break, I want to write down all the template words i will use for the speaking section. But is it okay to ? The staff there will take our papers after we are done , will there be a problem if they see my templates for speaking and writing section ? Also, i have heard there are no breaks for tests taken at a test center with computer, is that true ?
Hi Josh! Thank you so much for the wonderful videos!! I just did a Academic Discussions practice question provided on the toefl official website. I wrote 225 words and get a 0 score probably bc of the long text. I know I kind of wrote a lot but is writing too much not good to get a top score??
During the lecture whenever I listen to an unknown word I get perplexed and fail to continue note taking sometimes. Is there any problem if I skip that particular unfamiliar word. TIA
The best advice I can give is to try and ignore the words you don't understand. When you are listening, you may hear a word like "frazzle" and if you are wondering what that word means, you are no longer listening, but thinking about that word. Work on training yourself so that you don't get stuck thinking about one word (or multiple words) and lose your focus on trying to understand the main idea.
If we get 20 minutes for integrated writing & 10 minutes for academic discussion, then total time would be 30 minutes. But why it shows 29 minutes in total? Does anyone know this?
According to ETS www.ets.org/toefl/test-takers/ibt/about/content/writing.html, it should take ABOUT 29 minutes. If you have additional questions, please contact ETS.
Hi Mr Josh. I watched your videos on the writing section, but there are always situations like this lecturer and speaker disagree each other. Can you make a video about what if they are agree with each other on topic. What should i do in this situation?
The new/ second part makes me nervous. My opinion differs not very much from that of the first student. Will it be enough to use different words or will they think I kind of copy her opinion?
Hi Josh, thank you for all the videos; they are super useful. I have a question regarding the integrated writing section: Does the listening passage always oppose the points made in the reading, or it can also support the claims in the article?
Hi there and thank you for asking. The lecture ALWAYS opposes the reading passage. This has been officially confirmed to me by a rep from ETS, "Our current messaging about the Integrated Writing task is that the lecture always opposes the reading passage in some way; there is no other relationship." Hope that clears up any confusion some might have had about it.
@@TSTPrep thank you for your answer, that is great to hear! I've found more tests for the Integrated Writing online and some of them had the listening passage with the same viewpoint as the reading and I got totally confused. Hello Josh! First, thank you for all of the extremely useful material you guys provide on this channel! In the writing part, will we be penalized for writing about 300 words? Would our answer be considered "ineffective"?

When I try some practise tests on EST's website, sometimes it cannot evaluate my response and says that it is too long. Should I write in a range of word count or writing more is okay?
Hi Josh! Would you mind answering my questions, please? Some of my students who plan on taking TOEFL iBT in August 2023, ask me these two kinds of questions. They heard about this news somewhere. 1. The changes only apply to the computer-based test. Is it true? 2. The themes given in the reading section will be tailored to the test takers' majors. Is this news true?

Hi there and thank you for commening. I hope you find the course useful. You might also want to try essay evaluations or meeting with a teacher to help your score. - tstprep.com/store/toefl/
Hey josh i had one doubt, i usually read too fast so i'm left up with some 60-80 seconds while reading the passage. So can i write my template in that time? or the writing starts after the listening only ?
Yes, you can absolutely start writing your template. You will know the main topic, the author's main point, and his three supporting reasons. That should be enough for you to plan during the extra time. Of course, you will have to add the listening in later but that should not be too difficult.
Hey thank you for this video. I got one question: If we're doing the toefl test writing part online, are we gonna write on the laptop or do we have to write the things down on a piece of paper?
First of all, you will you will have to type out your essay. If you are inquiring about taking notes, you get a pencil and a piece of scrap paper. You can´t take notes on your screen. If you take the TOEFL Home Edition, you should use a small desktop whiteboard ( or a sheet of paper inside a transparent protector,) with an erasable marker, no pencil or pen.
First, thank you for your wonderful video, I really appreciate it. I have a question.. If I write more than 225 words on the integrated section, do I get a minus point??
It says the overall time for writing is 29mins. But the first task is 20 mins and the second one is 10 mins. I feel kinda confused 😐 Do I have 10 mins or 9 mins for task 2? Thank you ~
I have a question? My friend got 77 score. Is she failed? Of course she likes to take again to improve her score. But what about this score. She said that it depends of university. Normally, they solicited at least 80. Could you please, tell me about it. Thank you.
I think she needs to get the exam again, personally i got 88 and I feel like a shit and gonna retake it bcuz it is not enough for me to get into masters degree for English literature

hollow josh should i write 250-350 that to long i write 150 because actually i can't write more then 150 because i should take the words from the passage how i can get 250
We recommend 250 - 300 words because we find that students who write more score higher. However, this is optional. According to ETS, your integrated essay needs to be somewhere between 150-225 words.
Hello I wanted to ask if we should read some paragraphs in the reading section that seems unrelated to some questions for the context or just skip it because it saves time? Also, is it beneficial to read the whole passage first or skim through the question then try to find the answer in the passage?
@user-iv8ok9hv5d You do not have enough time to read the passage and answer the questions. I recommend going one paragraph at a time. The style is up to you, but I usually recommend skimming the paragraph quickly first and then answering all the questions connected to that paragraph before moving on to the next one.
Josh!! I have a question. While attempting the above writing task-1(Integrated one), my word count crossed 400+ ..around 450 in the first attempt.. but after looking at your sample response I then trimmed it around 368 at first and finally to 355.. but that was something I did later after the test. I couldn't do that in the given time frame. As per your advice 350 is better..and let me tell you I am following your writing template #2 (the advanced level template). So what do you suggest in such case, how much should I trim or reduce it and what if I exceed 350? will ETS deduct my marks?
There is no maximum length for your response. Based on our experience, students who wrote longer essays got higher scores. However, please keep in mind that if you write more words, you might make more mistakes or don't have enough time to double-check everything at the end.
You will have 20 minutes to write your Integrated essay. During writing the reading passage is on screen and students can refer to it every time they wish to.
According to ETS, your integrated essay needs to be somewhere between 150-225 words. However, we find that students who write between 250 - 300 words score higher.

Hi Josh, I wrote this response for the academic discussion question, could you please share your though about it, if you don't mind. Question # 8. This is certainly a controversial topic, but Claire and I are on the same page regarding the possibility of working shorter hours in the next two decades . Just like her, I wholeheartedly believe that people in the future will have more free time compared with today. I would also add that the Internet plays a crucial role by providing new working opportunities that were not available in the past, and definitely, these kinds of jobs may expand even more in the future. The influencers, for example, provide flexible hours with high salaries, even though it was not known ten years ago. In addition, people today are totally aware of jobs that give them more money with more leisure hours; thus, people in the future are eager for these careers. In summary, I'm convinced that people may have more free time in the future than today, and this is because of the Internet.

Hi! Is writing 245 words too much for Writing Task 1? The recommended maximum words was 225.
There is no maximum length for your response. However, we find that students who write more words score higher. Hope this helps!
hollow josh should i write 250-350 that to long i write 150 because actually i can't write more then 150 because i should take the words from the passage how i can get 250
We recommend 250 - 300 words because we find that students who write more score higher. However, this is optional. According to ETS, your integrated essay needs to be somewhere between 150-225 words.
Hello
I wanted to ask if we should read some paragraphs in the reading section that seems unrelated to some questions for the context or just skip it because it saves time?
Also, is it beneficial to read the whole passage first or skim through the question then try to find the answer in the passage?
if u wish I can help u with preparing for TOEFL
@user-iv8ok9hv5d You do not have enough time to read the passage and answer the questions. I recommend going one paragraph at a time.
The style is up to you, but I usually recommend skimming the paragraph quickly first and then answering all the questions connected to that paragraph before moving on to the next one.
@@TSTPrep thanks a lot !!
@@TSTPrep Thanks Josh. I will be careful with that and will follow your advice
Where is the sample answers? Thanks
They are in the downloadable PDF in the description.
on the writing test we have access to the frist text during the 20 minutes ?
You will have 20 minutes to write your Integrated essay. During writing the reading passage is on screen and students can refer to it every time they wish to.
Is the first writing question 250-350 words or 150-250 words on the actual exam ?
According to ETS, your integrated essay needs to be somewhere between 150-225 words. However, we find that students who write between 250 - 300 words score higher.
where is the solution of this question?

Hello. Josh!
I am Kangmin from South Korea.
I am delighfully watching your video for more useful tips for TOEFL.
Since I have just watched this awesome video, and answered for the first question of writing. If it is ok with you, I want to donate my essay as "STUDENT ESSAY". in order for use of your teaching materials for the future reference. Along with that, I actually want my essay to be graded with a thorough feedback.
If you check this comment, please let me know of you email where I can drop my essay.
Deeply appreciated of your beautiful TOEFL materials and hardworking.
Thank you
Hi there and thank you for your thoughtful comment. We don't accept essays at the moment, but you may want to donate your speaking response. Here is the link if you are interested - tstprep.com/practice-questions-toefl-speaking/. Thanks again.
Hi Mr Josh. I watched your videos on the writing section, but there are always situations like this lecturer and speaker disagree each other. Can you make a video about what if they are agree with each other on topic. What should i do in this situation?
