This is exciting news. Much needed. Looking foreword to trying these out. One little thing in the history - 12v rails actually began in. 1969 in the blue track era - but we all think of 1980 and the grey track as the 12v era
Ah ha! I was wondering when someone was going to call us out on that! :) Indeed the metal centre rails were introduced earlier but with only a handful of sets released over a decade--it wasn't until the 1980 grey-era when the system exploded with sets, accessories, etc. and became mainstream.
Still miss those signals... Huge 9v fan here; we never got light-up signals. A missed opportunity. Looking forward to these new rails, I can only hope you can keep up with demand once news breaks out! I imagine every train club will want A LOT of straight and curved rail.
I was born right at the end of the 9v era, but inherited a couple of trains and some track from my older brothers. I always wished LEGO would start making the old rails again so I could get more and make bigger and better things with that old system, so seeing this makes me so happy! I'm not as obsessed with Legos as I used to be when I was a little kid, but I may still purchase some of this to do what I always dreamed of doing, make a massive Lego train layout in my bedroom. Lego seems to have a similar situation to Nintendo. Amazing toy & product designers (put together the new Blacksmith shop and you'll see what I mean) and terrible corporate management. Lego fans should pull a Gamestop, buy all the stock, and replace the corporate board. Then new leadership can put their designers in charge and get better sets and fewer moneymaking schemes.
the advantage that the "new" battery system was it could run several trains at once because of the mutli frequency IR system. The drawback to the 9v metal rail system was the fact it could run just 1 loco like the old DC systems on normal model railroads. Finally giving Lego DCC systems following the typical NMRA system is perfect, since you could then adapt DCC systems like Digitrax command stations to lego railroads, and allow the use of JMRI (and as such the JMRI's Engine Driver Adrioid App or WiThrottle for Apple).
Simple DC voltage speed control is actually awesome and still very relevant today. Its simplicity and robustness are perfect for many folks especially new-comers to the hobby. Having said that, DCC is a fantastic standard with a long and mature pedigree. If you were watching the video carefully at the 05:47 mark, you'll see a brief screen-cap of my JMRI controlled layout!
RUclips recommendations are a strange thing. I've had the 9V system (a hand-me-down) from my older brother and had been looking for new motors, lights and more importantly, the cables and tracks. It was super frustration when Lego changed the power cable connectors and then discontinued the 9V products. Most of all, I cannot wait for the new switches, and new turning radiuses that will become available over time. Thanks for putting in the work and dedication to make this a reality.
Nicely done Michael, I wish you well with these new products as they are certainly something that can help the hobby develope even more, to me these tracks are a symbol of a missed opportunity on LEGO's part and it's great to see you come in to fill the void.
The 12 volt era had started with the blue rails already. You just didn’t have the fancy stuff like remote control. But you could run you old trains on the new tracks and vice versa. We had a track running through our room made up out of both blue and grey tracks.
I never understood why Lego never developed a fully fledged railway ecosystem. Unlike other model trains such as HO scale, they have a near total monopoly on all the pieces for building detailed layouts and rolling stock and therefore a licence to print money from a huge train enthusiast base. Great to see you and others are filling the gaping void in supplying the market with track elements such as grand curves and points.
You know what, the accessories such as crossings, and track side stuff. I really do miss those kits. I've never owned the actual train sets, but have owned a much of the accessories. I just liked how unique they were.
Finally! It wont cost an absolute fortune just to get a few extra 9V straight tracks anymore! Being so old the prices for those elements has really skyrocketed and it makes doing anything with them a pain. These beautiful tracks will rectify that problem!
This is a seriously cool concept. With other 3rd party makers and LEGO themselves making lots of new options for battery power train control, the beauty of the 9v system is brought back to life, and, as you said, can hopefully reach its full potential. You're doing a lot for this community by doing this because now the next generation of lego train builders can experience the fun of the 9V system. You missed something.... in The early 80s I got a bag of used Lego(r) rails. They were all from the blue era, some of them had metal attached to the rails and could be powered by a 4.5v battery. There also was this huge blue battery holder with the sliding lever to reverse polarity for the rails.
I got my fist LEGO train just before the switch to the complete plastic track i was so sad i they changed it so very nice to see this type of track return
I can’t wait!!! I’ve been wanting to create dcc system that revolves around the LEGO train system. I have so many trains and do little track, and batteries can’t run trains all day for people to watch.
And no wonder what is left of 9 volt and the airport shuttle system was out of stock people brought the final boxes and bags of it I certainly hope someone makes a knockoff version that will somewhat bring back 9 volt stuff because people were raging at lego for getting rid of it
Also DCC could also allow for fully automated trains that can run on layouts automatically without any human input so trains could automatically alternate between each other on looping layouts! It’s also likely that the 9V power functions outputs on motor bogies could have their voltages controlled in a DCC system so it could allow for a traditional power functions 9V LEGO motor bogie to be used as a second motor in a locomotive while it could also be utilised for decretive motorised mechanisms and lights to be used on trains! :)
I've always thought having electrified rails that could recharge a battery, possibly a smaller one would be a decent hybrid. I like the ideas of having individual engine controls, but would like to mix plastic and metal rails.
The unrealistic curves in the lego tracks have always been a big complaint of mine, it’s so awesome to finally see more realistic track options for lego trains becoming available
Great news for us 9V lovers! Don't forget wheels and metal axles. Hope you won't get bought by LEGO in a few years and smashed against the wall. I guess it's just a matter of time until the LEGO bricks will also be replaced by compatible bricks in MOCs. BrickLink sellers with good train parts stock are becoming more rare since the merger.
This is great, I'm excited about the larger curve radiuses and newer power motors. It will greatly help out the scale look of the Lego train having much larger radius. I wish FX Bricks a long and profitable future
I’ve always wanted different types of 9v switch tracks and curved tracks. I’m definitely gonna support this. The new and improved 9v motor sounds great too. I can’t wait!
What I have always wanted but never was able to have was the Monorail Transport System from the Futron line and the MonoRail Transport Base from the Unitron line But there was always a part of me as a kid who wanted lego trains as well. I hope one day I can build all my old M-Tron sets with my son (he's now 2) and Hopefully one day I can finally finish my M-Tron collection (I really need only the Mega Core Magnetizer IIRC)
This looks incredible, I eagerly await the motor you talked about, I've never had any 9v track or motors, only power functions, I have been trying to get my hands on 9v stuff but I just don't have the budget, I can't wait for these!
Oh dang that’s awesome! I think the larger clubs would love to run again without the need to constantly charge batteries. It’s probably going to take a few years to switch everything over if they go for it, though. There’s A LOT of already built railbed already out there. And assuming we’re ever allowed to gather in large numbers again...
Though I completely agree with you new system and the options it provides, I do think the pulse modulation offered on the power functions (battery) provided a very good solution to smooth running of trains that variable voltage suffers from in a cheap and simple form. Since power is V^2.R (voltage squared), you can see that the power generated by a motor is the square of the voltage which means that voltage regulated trains suffer terribly from difficult starting and slow down when under partial load. The pulse modulation used results in power being directly proportional to the on cycle meaning low speeds are better regulated and smooth/constant. DCC can circumvent this varying the voltage to autoregulate the speed, but still suffers from stutter and temporary slowdowns due to the squared relationship since it is still fundamentally a voltage regulated speed control and how long the motor/circuitry responds to voltage regulation . I think what you are doing a a great option for advanced builders of trains and opens up a huge possibility for lego trains. Thank you very much for setting this up. For most people with not so much money, I do think the power-functions pulse modulation was actually a good option for train play without the worry of circuit design causing shorting and makes it easy for us simple users to have smoother trains usage than that even from OO or O guage. Plenty of space for both options in the Lego world; I really hope your system takes off.
Would be pretty cool if you make a small square motor (less long) and a rectangle motor (indiana jones temple of doom size wheel placement) for mine carts and the smaller tracks for them but with straight parts and extra drastic curves for them than the two parts already available in default lego.
Amazing. Brining a new product to market is an extremely difficult and expensive task, especially when it is a product like this with accurate tolerances! great work!
This video brings so much joy!!! I'm now hoping lego releases a new train for 2021. Something like the retired Santa Fe or Maersk. Thanks for your work and I will be patronizing your business 👌🏾
Awesome. I have an almost complete Lego Wild West town and Fort Legorado , with an eight car, old locomotive train MOC. I have a small oval metal track, but would really love to expand this to go around my large Lego city.
Hello from Germany, I'm glad you got the 9 system picks up again and I'm glad that the rails are reasonably available in Germany, I would be happy if you could imitate the rails that Lego produced in which country you actually produce the rails
If you could put a DCC decoder in a locomotive (as I currently do with my H0 scale trains), that would be amazing. Then you can control the acceleration and braking, control the lights, use advanced controllers like the ESU ECoS, and even have fully automatic computer control. Nothing is as unrealistic as a train coming to an abrupt stop in a station. I hope this will be a groundbreaking success.
A very good business idea and a very good video. Just one remark regarding the history of Lego trains: your video suggests that 12v trains with transformator and conducting rails were only available during the Grey Era from 1980 to 1990. This is far from the truth, since the 12v system was introduced already in 1969 during the Blue Era. There were just not so many technical features available (only remote-controlled switches from 1969 to 1974). And, you should also point out that one of the reasons why the 9v system did not reach its full potential is that these remote-controlled features from the 1980s 12v system were dropped for the 9v system in 1991. It would be great to have in particular remote-controlled switches and signals for the 9v system, too.
This is great, luckily I have enough of the 9 volt tracks for my city, but you just offer the opportunity for anyone to start her/his own lego 9 volt train layout👍
You have my attention. What really intrigued me was the ability to connect to dcc. I am already setup with jmri and have the nce power cab. I will be following this closely. Looking forward to the addition of the 9v motors.
Those motora will sell out instantly. It would be amazing to get my Lego traina running again. The old connector from the powerpack to the track is trash.
I've found putting copper tape on the plastic track works quite well. Though so far I haven't gotten it to work with switches. The new motors also look really nice. Probably have to wait a couple years before I buy any since I wont have much money.
The geometry of your switches does look very well, much better than LEGO switches. For propulsion I would prefer a battery box which could be charged by USB or alternatively third rail power, because I like to build reversing track loops.
This is gonna be sold out for a long time. Thank you, and good luck! I've been wanting to build a lego table for my niece to play on, wondering how I'd incorporate my black and yellow train with just the stock track. Looking forward to this!
Amazing news! Thank you for being the one to meet the needs of all lego train hobbyist. Also, are there any plans of PFx venturing into 9v narrow gauge tracks (4-wide) and 9v bogies?

And no wonder what is left of 9 volt and the airport shuttle system was out of stock people brought the final boxes and bags of it I certainly hope someone makes a knockoff version that will somewhat bring back 9 volt stuff because people were raging at lego for getting rid of it
I never saw these anywhere growing up in USA ever !!! And I loved legos !!!!
It will also allow for bigger steam style locomotives to make less use of unflanged wheels.
I just received my double straight tracks and I am thrilled with them. I am even more excited about the large radius curves!
I can’t wait!
that's great but what about the motors?
This is fantastic news. I hope FX Bricks makes a bazillion dollars with this venture!
Sounds so cool. Always wanted a large Lego train track... Maybe it is the right time to start
I grew up in the 9 volt era that shifted into the R/C era, I always looked at the 9 Volt era was the best and the one the got away.
You're the saviors of classic Lego train enthusiasts! ❤
This is great! I might have to make this into my city!
A new era for the 9V system. Very excited about the possibilities.
This is cool but
How cool would it be to offer such parts for the gray 12v system
What I have always wanted but never was able to have was the Monorail Transport System from the Futron line and the MonoRail Transport Base from the Unitron line
But there was always a part of me as a kid who wanted lego trains as well. I hope one day I can build all my old M-Tron sets with my son (he's now 2) and Hopefully one day I can finally finish my M-Tron collection (I really need only the Mega Core Magnetizer IIRC)
Seeing this has filled me with a new level of happiness
These tracks are so amazing. Finally you can ride with full speed along the curves 😍
Would be pretty cool if you make a small square motor (less long) and a rectangle motor (indiana jones temple of doom size wheel placement) for mine carts and the smaller tracks for them but with straight parts and extra drastic curves for them than the two parts already available in default lego.
Amazing. Brining a new product to market is an extremely difficult and expensive task, especially when it is a product like this with accurate tolerances! great work!
YES FINALLY 9V is coming back
Awesome stuff! It will be very interesting to explore new rails!
I Hope the price will BE good... The Idea IS great and I think it can have a great Future... So many Legorailroaders are waiting for a good System
This video brings so much joy!!! I'm now hoping lego releases a new train for 2021. Something like the retired Santa Fe or Maersk. Thanks for your work and I will be patronizing your business 👌🏾
I subscribed too!!!
This is a great bringing back of the 9 volt system, cant wait to see em
If you could put a DCC decoder in a locomotive (as I currently do with my H0 scale trains), that would be amazing. Then you can control the acceleration and braking, control the lights, use advanced controllers like the ESU ECoS, and even have fully automatic computer control. Nothing is as unrealistic as a train coming to an abrupt stop in a station. I hope this will be a groundbreaking success.
This is great news. I can always use more track and my 9v motors aren't going to last forever. Can't wait to get my hands on these!
This is amazing!! Now all we need is the power pick up bricks and some metal rimmed drivers and steam would be back in business
Mould king has a steam module which can connect to PF!
Awesome. I’ve got a lot of original 12V trains and its a bastard to find track in Australia in any quantity at reasonable prices.
This is great, luckily I have enough of the 9 volt tracks for my city, but you just offer the opportunity for anyone to start her/his own lego 9 volt train layout👍
May treat my layout to these electric rails.
Well it is a subway!
Really nice. I could see including model rail DCC signals as well.
This is gonna be sold out for a long time. Thank you, and good luck!
I've been wanting to build a lego table for my niece to play on, wondering how I'd incorporate my black and yellow train with just the stock track. Looking forward to this!
Adding a rechargeable system to use with existing power functions so that I can keep the remote control over mulitple engine would make this perfect.
Ah, do you have your blessing from the LEGO company? This is very incredible all the same!
I doubt that
@@SentecaMorvan I suppose that makes sense...
Hopefully, LEGO wont' get too livid.
@@e-mananimates2274 Lego no longer holds the patents for the tracks and 9v motor system.
This is gonna work wonders for my Iron Titan moc, the standard Lego curves and switches are too tight a radius for the locomotive to traverse
Amazing news! Thank you for being the one to meet the needs of all lego train hobbyist. Also, are there any plans of PFx venturing into 9v narrow gauge tracks (4-wide) and 9v bogies?
