  • "A bird in the hand is worth two ticks off any list". I get far more lasting pleasure from the trust shown by these delicate little wild creatures than I do from seeing a new species at 100 meters and crossing it off my life list.

+william bobinski Thank you William, it is difficult to put into words the feelings you get when you gain the trust of what are defiantly still wild creatures that are usually very wary of contact with people.

I expect with a little time, the Black Capped Chickadees back home would be eating out of the hand. They're already very friendly and will let you get to within a foot or two with out panic. They seem to enjoy interacting with one when you speak to them.

I once rescued a sparrow that got trapped in our greenhouse, it flew into the glass a few times and was flapping around on the floor in a daze. I gently grabbed it and took it outside and held my hand up to let it fly away. instead it just sat there on my hand looking at me as if to say aren't you going to finish me off😁 after a while it flew not far away and perched on an apple tree. I felt really good after that. at the moment we have a crow nesting in our wash-house and has built a massive nest of twigs. we never disturb nesting birds wherever they build a home even if it's a bit of an inconvenience. We have lots of birds because we feed them all year round and in winter time we have fat balls and nuts to satisfy the masses! always a lot if chirping going on that goes on well into the evening. great video by the way.👏👍

I love these creatures. I actually had a small bird which inadvertantly flew into my upstairs window not so long ago - there are a few of them that live in the hedge below the window. Anyway, I tried to encourage it towards the window to go back, but of course it just saw me as a threat and flew into the other bedroom and it burrowed itself into a pile of clothes in the corner so i had to grab it and then put it back out the window. It must have been terrified, and it is frustrating because like many animals, you wish that you can tell them that you mean no harm and are helping them

    • @MauriceBaker100
      @MauriceBaker100  8 лет назад +5

Yes they do tend to panic, but at least you did the right thing for it.

    • @MauriceBaker100

Thank you for your comment. It's really just a matter of gaining their trust. In the spring when they have young nestlings to feed and the urge to find food for them can make them quite bold. When the breeding season has finished many of them revert back to to being much more cautious.

I have been mad about birds for years 💕 and although I feed them regularly, I have never tried feeding them out of my hands. It’s now October & I’ve been doing a lot of tidying up in my garden of late, and my resident Robin has been hard at my tail looking for baby snails and worms I may disturb. So now they know me, I’m gonna try & feed them from my hand 🤗. Here’s hoping 🙏. I’ll be sure to report back to guys 👍

Thanks so much for sharing this. I have many different types of birds who visit my garden daily and the black bird wakes me up around 5 a.m but it doesn't disturb me, it is so beautiful I fall back to sleep. Love, love the birds, but haven't got to the stage where they feed from my hand am being patient, as you said it does take a lot of patience, they have started to fly toward me but are a little hesitant, the jackdaws were shy but now they land in my garden whilst I am quite close, this is new as prior to this they were very shy. I have to gain their trust, as I had some neighbours with kids who were cruel to the birds, thankfully they have moved. The Jackdaws, have even started following me when I go out for walks!
It is heartwarming the friendship I have with birds, so rewarding...makes me cry with joy at times watching them, and when they welcome me all excited , sparrows, tits, doves, Jackdaws, it pulls at my heart strings.
Where do you buy your live worms from? , I buy the dried mealworms but now there are chicks to feed would prefer to buy the live worms. Thanks

+ali walker Thank you Ali for your comments and for subscribing, I am really pleased that you are getting so much pleasure from your birds. If you really want to try and get birds to feed from your hand I would start off with the robin and the best time of the year to do that is in the spring when they have got young ones to feed as that is when they are at their boldest. To see how I did it take a look at my web page 'The Secret Life of the Robin'. www.mbaker.co.uk/THE%20SECRET%20LIFE%20OF%20THE%20ROBIN.htm Some pet shops sell live mealworms but I get mine on line at Livefoods Direct www.livefoodsdirect.co.uk/?gclid=Cj0KEQjw6Ya5BRDdyOewyo_Z_64BEiQA-fVKe-UqkGfs8HhFh3R3V3BN32gmaQy3Rm7MW9OHKzIYqRgaAiUK8P8HAQ At this time of year I have a standing order with them for 2 Kg of regular mealworms a week!!! Continue to enjoy your birds, Maurice :-)

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply, I will definitely take your advice re starting with the Robin. Yes patience is the key lol!
Oh and the for posting the links very helpful, the pound shop meal worms do not last long enough, not at this time of year but yes is such a blessing, I love the birds who visit me daily so much, the welcome they give you pulls on my heart strings, they are so adorable.
The first chicks I've seen this year are the sparrows, can't wait to see the baby chicks from the tits and other birds, I love them all the same, they all have to eat but when you develop a relationship with them it is something else!
I really can't believe they've started to follow me into town, today two pigeons, a magpie and a few jackdaws followed me, it is quite amusing as when I spot them, they seem to pretend to be preoccupied and fly off lol but show up again, waiting for me to leave the market, I had some funny looks with the jackdaws calling to me from people, especially when I started speaking to them lol!..I will have to film this and post it on Facebook. Thanks again for replying, so very kind of you. lovely to meet a kindred spirit who loves birds so much! 🐣 🐥 🐦 🐤

Thank you Maurice for sharing this absolutely beautiful video. I still feel guilty about passing judgement apon a elderly lady while I was sitting in my vehicle. I was waiting for someone to finish Grocery shopping. I assumed she was littering, throwing out cigarette butts. The way she was looking around as if she was wondering who was watching her? All she was doing was unloading bread crumbs, pieces of broken up bread out of plastic bag. I didn't realize it until after she left that she was in fact feeding the birds in the parking lot. To my amazement the birds were chirping about, fluttering about with happiness. :)

I hate apartment living. We’re not allowed to feed the birds but course I do anyway. But I’ve been reported before, so for me, I take a couple cups of their food, sometimes I’ll throw in fruit or nuts- and then enjoy them through my window. You’re blessed with peace, quiet, space. I’d die to have such serenity. And you’re so so kind. I wish you all the peace and good in this world. Giving back to nature, that’s beautiful to me. I'm hoping to one day have birds eating from my hand, well done sir , I've been feeding the birds for a while now and have some regulars , that's the cool thing about getting old , this stuff is meaningful, ❤

you're very lucky that you have a garden full of cute small birds.
We have only Crows, magpie's and those other pests that scare the others away...

Wow. That's really amazing. My garden robin is very tame. I think it may be the juvenile that I fed in summer, now adult. It briefly fed from my hand although I don't entertain that now. Rather, it does greet me most mornings awaiting a soft pellet or two.

Cool. The only time I've ever held a bird was when this little hummingbird flew into the sliding glass door and knocked itself out. I did pick that tiny critter up. A few moments later it woke up looked around and flew away.
