Hey Joe, I was blown away by your singing on the Layers video for Presonus. Your high register is beautiful. Thanks for all you do for us.

Joe &co run a cable from your interface to your car stereo input and mix in the car. I do this and it works great!

A really helpful plug-in for quickly testing a mix across different devices is SonoBus (and it’s free!)… it allows you to stream uncompressed audio live from your DAW. I use it to send the audio to a phone, iPad, Bluetooth speaker, car etc. It saves having to render a mix and you can adjust your mix in real time to see how it translates across all the devices. Highly recommended! 😊

I’m gonna expand on the “listening to other music in your home studio” referencing advice. You can flip that around, too. I’ll A/B my tracks against a CLA mix or a Steely Dan record in my earbuds, in the car, on my ipad, wherever. This gives you some perspective when it comes to how people will hear your music amidst a sea of tracks recorded in multimillion dollar facilities. I’ve found that if my mixes are going to lack in some area, it’ll be one of a few (relatively common) things…too much energy in the 2k-5k range, not enough punch/definition in the low end, a vocal that fails to sit properly on top. These are things you can identify and take notes on (sounds irritating in the car, kick and bass disappear on the ipad, pull out some 1.6k on the vocal, etc). Once you get a handle on this, it’s going to bring your work to the next level, guaranteed.

I would also add, use a reference track of a professional recording that is a similar style to your track when mixing. It can help develop your ear and eliminate some of the guesswork.

Joe: I appreciate your advice on the “translation” issue regarding different audio response on different systems. I waited too long to learn the process of adapting my mixes to suit a variety of playback situations. For me, Sonarworks saves a LOT of time and effort with its built-in simulation feature for various size cars, earbuds, and cellphone speakers. I just click through the list of simulations to quickly get a feel for how well the mix can “travel.” Sonarworks is among the best investments I’ve made for my 10x10 foot “studio.” Your training courses still rank as my best investments, but Sonarworks (and Metric AB) are a close second.

Hey Joe- all of the car stereos nowadays are all digital and the sound is soooo crappy- car radio, CDs, and thumb drives sound so tinny, It's not like the old days when you could take your cassette tape to the car and really appreciate the four-speaker stereo. I miss the old analog sound. The only station that almost doesn't sound that bad is the classical station. I appreciate your advice- about frequencies and how to mix , and it really helps to have a couple of good headphones along with the monitors.

Joe I have a problem and I don't know hot to technically solve it in studio one 5. I have a kick drum and a layer but the transient of the layered kick is out of phase while the tail is in phase. How can I , in studio one edit my audio file so I can draw out (or cut off basically) the transient of the layered kick without doing every single one by hand ? Thank you

Ave Maria by Franz Biebl is gloriously beautiful. I can see why you were attracted to it. I wish I had the vocal chops to attempt this. Hmmm. Melodyne?
Update: I entered the MIDI notes into seven Studio One tracks from the Biebl score. Now it’s waiting for me to dub in the live vocals to replace the tracks one by one. I wish I could sing…

Lol, at first glance I thought you were doing something concerning Pinhead (the horror movie guy. A movie I've never seen, but heard a lot about.) I'm probably the only one who equated those spiky lines with Pinhead. Today, anyway. Some other day, a porcupine? a dartboard for toothpicks? static electricity?
Meanwhile, just wondering... do you keep Wayne's tiny pic in that tiny pocket in your jeans? It's that pocket no one seems to use, other than maybe for coins to a pay phone (which no longer exist) or a house-/car key (which might take too long to extract)? I just now googled it. Originally it was for a small pocket watch (which no one wears anymore either.) Maybe one day, for a tiny cell phone... if it's any indication of most electronics which usually start big, then shrink smaller and smaller and tinier and not so tiny and not so small and bigger and bigger and huge and less huge and less big and more small until it morphs into something else entirely... wash, rinse, repeat.
    Sorry. My usual.
Thanks for all your time and wisdom. I look forward to your vids every week.
