Really, one of the most UPLIFTING songs ever!! Talk about trying to unite all the people of the world! The 5th Dimension is one of the GOAT vocalist groups ever. Marilyn and Billy D are STILL together today almost 60 years of wedding bliss!
These songs were a part of the 1967 Broadway hippie musical “Hair” …. Peace, love, harmony, expanded consciousness, drugs, …. Welcome to the “New Age”! 🎇🌅🌠🎆
We thought that the sentiments expressed in this song were so deep and meaningful. Astrology was a huge fascination in the 60s/70s, along with reincarnation and other Eastern Philosophies. Back when we still had newspapers, the daily astrologies was the first thing many people turned to every day. Brings me back to my hippie-dippie days.
This performance needs to be capsuled for all future generations ad infinitum. The message, the vocals, those early 70"s dance moves...and of course Marilyn ❤
This came out when I was 2 yrs old (just had my 57th bday yesterday). Back when I was a young kid, I was often left home alone. My dad was away serving in the Army while mom was either working or out partying & gambling. I wasn't allowed to have friends over so I spent countless nights by myself just watching TV or listening to music. My dad was first a DJ then a news announcer for Army radio, eventually becoming a new anchorman. So he had an impressive album collection of all different genres of music. One day I was bored so I began looking through my parents' music albums & saw one for The 5th Dimension. It was a collection of their best hits to that date. I had no clue who they were or what type of music they performed. I put the record on the stereo & was instantly hooked. I listened countless times to this song, Up up and Away, I didn't get to sleep at all, Wedding bell blues, & One less bell to answer (which is my favorite out of all their great songs). Marilynn McCoo (the lady in yellow & purple) later went on to host a music TV show called Solid Gold, I watched that show every Saturday night without fail. She & Billy Davis Jr. (guy in the middle of the group) married in 1969 & are still together. She's 80 yrs old & he is 85 yrs old now.
Marilyn McCoo (the one in the mostly yellow outfit was the host of Solid Gold in the 80s. She and Billy Davis Jr. (in the yellow pants) were married in 1969 and are still married today.
Well, this version of the song came out in 1969…not the 70‘s. Originally from the 1967 broadway play „Hair“. Checkout the Utube video of them performing „One Less Bell to Answer“ (Marilyn McCoo is the singer) on the 70‘s show „Soul Train“. Oh…listening through headphones will give you a better experience. Cheers
There's a cool version of McCoo and company singing it on an episode of It Takes a Thief (starring Robert Wagner). It's on RUclips at ruclips.net/video/YW_2TbIA8Bs/видео.html. It's lip synched but the visuals are nice.
Lead female singer was Marilyn McCoo, one of the finest voices of our time...another song that defined our era, a time of such promise, hope, and beautiful dreams, but also of tragedy and disappointment and sorrows,,,,
Hair is actually a very serious musical protesting the Vietnam War with a lot of great songs and racial and sexual content. It’s the most integrated show I’ve ever seen. There are two lead characters - Berger and Claude. The through line in the story is that Claude’s been drafted. What should he do? “Let the Sun Shine” is actually the closing chorus to the finale “The Flesh Failures” and is sung over Claude’s coffin, a deeply moving scene. In the movie Berger switches places with Claude and is the one who dies. It’s part of the tradition of the show that the audience is invited to come up on the stage to dance with the cast at the end.
This song (which is actually a two-song medley), "Easy to Be Hard" (covered by Three Dog Night), "Hair" (covered by the Cowsills), and "Good Morning, Starshine" (covered by Oliver) were all from the musical "Hair." See ruclips.net/video/SrD14jqTtAE/видео.html for Easy and ruclips.net/video/-I-NbgskFeY/видео.html for Good Morning (I especially like these two).
I loved it the first time I heard it when I was 9 or 10...Im 63 and I still crank it every time it comes on,,,I had a MAJOR crush on M Mckoo (spelling?) and still do
Suggestion: make the video small and your faces large (reverse what you have here). This is a REACTION channel, yet your faces are just too small to see your reaction. If I just want to hear the video/song, I wouldn't go the reaction channel.
This won multiple Grammy awards! My suggestion is a duo of songs: The Cranberries: Zombie and Bad Wolves: Zombie for more context or Simon and Garfunkel: The Sound of Silence vs Disturbed: The Sound of Silence. Thanks for the reaction!

I saw HAIR in Toronto back in the late 60s. It was kind of controversial at the time because the cast stripped naked at the end of the first act.

Not a rock opera. It was the first counterculture Broadway Musical. I saw it in NYC IN 1971.

??? How Does elder gent not know about the musical Hair or this 5th Dimension cover???
That was before me.
Well, since the song is about "harmony and understanding," why not use a lot of harmonies in the musical score?! Makes sense, eh?
Your not serious without headphones
I am a serious as a peanut butter sandwich
I know, right?
