My all-time favorite Aretha song! Billy Davis was arguing around this time that the group needed to get funkier, but Ron, Lamonte, and Florence didn't want to tamper with the MOR formula that had been successful for the group. THIS performance shows that the 5th would have given themselves a much-needed vitamin shot to their careers if they'd all followed through with Billy's suggestion. This number KICKS ASS!
Yep. Just like many of their funkier/edgier songs should have been released as singles. "It"ll Never Be The Same Again" should've been more than just a Bside. And I will NEVER understand why "My Song" and their version of "Feelin' Alright" weren't released as radio singles.
Not to mention: Much of their live shows included what was considered soul/R&B/funk cuts off of their albums as well as by other artists. So it wouldn't be much of a stretch to include more. I think the issue was more in the music arrangements also. Prime Example: "Somebody Warm Like Me"...recorded once with Billy's leads in a more soulful style; and again with Marilyn's leads in a more Adult Contemporary style. Neither song was released as a radio single; but Billy's version was included on the Soul and Inspiration album. Smart marketing could have made it a double-sided 45. Still trying to figure out how "My Song" just stayed an album cut. How they let that funky cut just sit on the record with no marketing. With that awesome acapella scatting at the breakdown in the end. How do you just let that be an album cut in the era of funk and soul music? 🤔😒
@@artist-es2fl Right. He and Flo killed it! Marilyn and Billy weren't bad either. And Ron with his shouts when it got good to him. Loved that. But Lamonte and Flo...jammed.
I wish Flo had taken lead more often. After the group split up Flo really showed what she could do. She had a great voice and Billy was easily a match for any of the great Motown voices,
Marilyn's voice and Stage presence really helped the Group back then. They wouldn't have gone as far with Flo. After their Success and Popularity, she was able to bring it along with the backing of some very talented people including the other 2 Original members _(after Marilyn & Billy went solo [duo])._ Marilyn can take the stage alone and brings it each time which is why she was a huge Success on Solid Gold.
I love watching Ron dance; it's cute. The poor guy just wasn't built for this kind of action. On a different note, I may just have to use this as an exercise routine.
Yes, most of the group, especially Billy, wanted to get into funkier music but the audience they had rejected it completely. When the 5th released Harlem back in the 70's, the reaction by DJ's was so hostile that some of them smashed the single and sent it back to their label--saying this was NOT the 5th Dimension they knew. Billy is in my opinion the greatest unnoticed soul singer of his era, but I couldn't help but notice that my friends HATED his voice. Different ears, I guess.
Potential?? Rarely do I make comments on social media but when word choices are so inept, I must speak out. As a past professional Broadway dancer let me just say Flo broke down!! Lamonte is moving with fierceness. I love him! THEY both gave this performance life! As a group, the choreography was well executed and should have been the path followed by the group. Just my opinion.
Whaaaaat?! I'd never expect this song from the 5th, but they rocked steady! Amazing watching Lamont turn it out with the choreography! He held his own and looked he was having a ball! That's the most intricate choreo I've ever seen them do! Was that The Ed Sullivan Show?
Wow!!where did this video come from?!! Love this!! Another side of the Fifth Dimensions I never seen before!! Love it. Thank you for this rare post!!❤️😊
Wait a minute! I just watched the clip for "Harlem" and said that I didn't ever remember hearing or seeing the 5th Dimension get down like that... but this one takes it to Another Level!
They performed Harlem on Soul Train (you can probably still find it on RUclips) and they danced like this in that clip. Unfortunately radio hated the song and refused to play it, saying "this is not the 5th Dimension we know." Harlem was an experiment to try to give the 5th a funkier sound, which Billy was pushing for, but the public rejected it
LAMonte.give Harry my love .i lived in LA years many years ago i left in 69 moved back home Harry was my friend .i live closed 2 Huntsville AL..wish you and the group could do a concert .we have a very large center.
In Celebration: The Fifth Dimension You're welcome, and thank you for posting so many wonderful clips. Do you know if there is a clip of the 5th Dimension singing Carpet Man (one from a live show, not a compilation of photos to music)? I don't think I've seen one on RUclips, but I was sure I saw them singing Carpet Man in 1968 on a TV show, maybe as part of a medley. Thanks.
Every time that I watch this and look for something new and try to see the difference between Flo and Marilyn. I wind up back to focusing on Marilyn. But I’ll keep looking.
That's the way you cover an arrangement...So it is, what it is...What they did is pack a good beat to it..hold on to it, and we'll it speaks for itself, so it does...doesn't it?
Looks like two members in this group are counting their dance beats; now I can see why Billy Davis jokingly said their were 3 Black People in the group. lol Love The 5th Dimension, never been another group like them.
I loved them, but without Marilyn's voice and sex appeal, I don't think they'd enjoyed the same degree of success. Also, so many Laura Nyro songs took them to the top.
Omg.....Florence made that performance her own, she was awesome.( Rock on girl) Great job guys
This group was so good they could sing any kind of music anywhere in any era
They did that!!! Flo was jamming and Billy is a classic Soul singer like Wilson Pickett!!
Rewind lol
Flo got her whole life in this clip!!!!
Florence Larue is very cute i like her lips
Shut up. lol
?
Marilyn as well
Twice.
Wow !!! That's another side of "The Fifth Dimension" that I didn't know about. "They were great dancers, too."
R.I.P. Ronald Townson 🥀
Wow, great to see Big Ron getting down and funky, but gorgeous Flo absolutely steals the show!
Flo was getting down with her bad self!
Wow Flo baby rock it and marylin too billy powerful voice was on point plus the other 2 dudes make it totally rock out man loved it.
Lamonte and Ron are the other two dudes.
The ,choreographed timing here is spot on for then or now. This group had amazing voices together, unlike any . This is doggone steady..

Wow really like this..Lamontes like I've got this..
Very well put.

Love this group! Marilyn McCoo is 100% committed to The 5th Dimension; such a pleasure to watch.
😂🤣🤣😂 Right up until she and Billy left the group
They can DANCE
My My I never knew the 5th Di******* got down like that. That was an a class excellent performance.
This is how they did things live in concert usually. But the media (television and radio) at the time barely showed it.
Get It Flo! Wow this dance would be relevant today 2021!
All of them are good
Wow, cannot take your eyes off of Florence Larue. That’s wifey right there

Yes and Yes !
This performance was so hype. They jammed.
I love this show. It demostrates that they were a great artits, singers and dancers 100%.
The 5th D...breaking it down! Love the way Flo dances. Amazing performance. Thanks for posting.
i always thought Florence was sexy as hell
I have loved Florence since 1970, sexy woman.
@@fred5399 Hell yah
They were doing some serious line dance choreography here.
I'm just discovering the 5th Dimension. I can only say ... wow!
Welcome
Wow!! Well good for you!
My favorite group
Only Billy Davis could take an Aretha classic and make it work!
I love watching Ron dance; it's cute. The poor guy just wasn't built for this kind of action.
On a different note, I may just have to use this as an exercise routine.
Yeah and he does a good job
Great singing, Great dancing. Just one awesome spectacular show of pure unsurpassed talent.

Flo is dancing
Billy was awesome! And Flo seriously moved those hips!! ----------WolfSky9
This was a fantastic performance... thank you Fifth Dimension for all you did for the music industry :)
Marilyn is a talented dancer!
Flo.
Billy Davis could sing his ass off ... lol. He killed everything he sang.
I'm with you, pal! This clip alone shows that Billy is THE great unrecognized soul singer of the 60's and 70's.
He so SOOO underrated.
WOW! I'm in love all over again!
Florence has a great dancing potential. She could be the best soul dancer.

Go 5th Dimension! They could sing the yellow pages!
Or even the constitution ... Oh wait
I can not keep my eyes off Florence she's such a groovy dancer and so freakin' sexy damn!!!
I LIKE THIS I THINK THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE MORE SONGS AND DANCING LIKE THIS
Flo is doing the same moves, but she alone among them looks like a real dancer. That's because she studied dance as a child.
Right. Flo and Lamonte were the natural dancers of the group.
Maybe she is just better at it , like MJ of the J5.
I wish I had all their performances on DVD.
They never miss a beat
Boy...they sure were a class act.
Excellent, so talented. Check out Aretha on Soul Train singing it. Good take too.

A full artists, I love them.

You know they were fully enjoying this!
This is really great by the 5 dimensions
THIS FITS INTO 2018 VERY NICELY!!

I had to turn this performance off for while, those ladies were steaming up my monitor !!!
Flo is something else!!!
THIS IS THE FLO SHOW!!
Craig Mc YES!! Florence can out dance them all.
How?
They all look good and she actually blended right in. Guess it's about favorites.
@@slamecatzwell5544 I think Marilyn is good as well they all are actually

Oh my the 5D gettin down with their bad selves. Never seen this and it's my fave Aretha song to boot. They should have recorded more funkier tracks.
This was all about Florence.
Lamonte's too..really feeling it
Billy's Vocals stole the show, so no "one" person stood out to the Crowd. They all looked good.
wow! this just gave me life thanks so much for posting this :)
LAMonte.give Harry my love .i lived in LA years many years ago i left in 69 moved back home Harry was my friend .i live closed 2 Huntsville AL..wish you and the group could do a concert .we have a very large center.
I wasn't born when the 5th Dimension became famous awesome !!!!
My favourite group singing a song by my favourite singer! I've never seen this before. Thanks for posting this. I wonder if Aretha has seen this.
Thanks for visiting!!

I have the group singing Carpet Man on the John Davidson show in 1968 (in B and W).... I will try to uploaded it before the weekend is over. Thanks
In Celebration: The Fifth Dimension Oh, thank you!! I will be so glad to see that. Thanks again!!
Billy did his thing on the lead.

1. WAYMENT--The 5th Dimension got down like THAT?
2. Nevertheless, I can only imagine the shade Aretha Franklin spewed when she got a load of that.
Yup. They were a lot badder than they got credit for. Getting labeled as pop can bite ya sometimes.
Get Down yall Florence and LaMonte. Yall move heyyyy Nye Much luv🎉🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🙌🙌🙌🙌❤❤❤😍
Marilyn was good too
Wow!
@leshiaNecole... you are very welcome.... glad you enjoyed it
FAb!!
Flo is gettin' DOWN!
These cats were getting down!✊

They all did a good job
Lamont is so fine
Funky Fifth!!!
-TAA- WHAT IT IZ...ROCK STEADY...BABY....WHAT IT IZ IZ WHAT IT IZ..sweet like sherbert.lil paper bag lil plastic spoon...called ...fizz
I loved them, but without Marilyn's voice and sex appeal, I don't think they'd enjoyed the same degree of success.
Also, so many Laura Nyro songs took them to the top.
Ron was always thought to be the heavy one but here he looks mean and thin.
What is the last.line they sing?
Sounds like they borrowed a soundtrack from Superfly. I am waiting to see Priest jump over a chain link fence in Harlem.
Alright Now
No race issues.
Marilyn look a little jeslous
Why she's good too I don't think so Marilyn was the most popular one in the group
This group was popular for their group harmonizing and vocals. This song was thier downfall to failure.
This was a variety show performance, covering an Aretha Franklin track. Had no bearing on their career whatsoever!
It looks like they were just enjoying the song and having a good time, though. "Their dancing and singing ain't bad, either !!!" Go Flo !!! 😉👍
No No No...it ain't working they should have at least wore similar clothes and going after Aretha Franklin song is a HUGE mistake
Flo is by far the BEST dancer of the two. Marilyn can't really dance .... sorry love!
absolutely
Flo is getting down. Marilyn ain't too bad either.
This seems kinda watered down, like it was made for a Barry Manilow crowd that wanna get funky one time 🤔
