These songs are from the musical Hair. The musical was about hippy counterculture with a solid anti-Vietnam War sentiment.
Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr, members of the 5th Dimension, have been married for over 50 years. They have duets they've released as well as solo material.

I grew up with the great music of The 5th Dimension in the 60's-70's. They had so many great hits such as "Go Where You Wanna Go", "Up, Up & Away", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Sweet Blindness", "Wedding Bell Blues", "California Soul", "Workin' On A Groovy Thing", "One Less Bell To Answer", "Never My Love", "(Last Night) I Didn't Get To Sleep at All", "If I Could Reach You", "Love's Lines, Angles & Rhymes", "Living Together, Growing Together" etc.

With one of the fattest, funkiest bass lines in history, this was the #1 single of 1969 and the definition of "groovy." I still _love_ those harmonies!

Yep, my favorite bass line. It drives the entire song.

The instrumentals were from the legendary Wrecking Crew. The bassist is the incomparable Joe Osborne. And yes, it's probably the funkiest bassline in the history of music.

I used to love the 5th Dimension!
You should check out "Wedding Bell Blues" by the 5th Dimension. 2 of the members, Billy Davis Jr. & Marilyn McCoo we're a couple. She sang Wedding Bell Blues to him to get him to marry her. It worked. They married & celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2019! The two of them also had a variety tv show for a brief time.

Marylin McCoo, the woman at the right at the start of the video, is so beautiful, even today at 78. Her voice just melts my heart. Billy Davis Jr, the guy with the raspy voice, is her husband. They've been married since 1969. Great couple.

One of my life long favs! We even sang this in chorus! Me? Soprano!
    Fyi it's a 2 part song btw!
The guy singing is named Billy Davis jr and he's married to the tall woman Marilyn McCoo. After all these years I read the 2 were still performing together!
Marilyn McCoo had hits of her own without the group late 60's. Mary Me Bill, One Less Bell To Answer to name a few! As a couple, they had hits in the 70's. Their biggest was You Don't Have To Be A Star (to be in my show)
Oh yeah, what a rabbit hole. 💃😎

Great music transcends time, culture, generations, etc. Like you, I wore out many 45s and LPs of this music (including The 5th Dimension) on my little aqua & lime green turntable, except that was back in the late 60's early 70's as a very young girl wearing bright paisley maxi dresses and white go-go boots! 😄😂 ✌️♥️

Growing up in the 60s and 70s, this amazing group is part of the soundtrack of my youth. I also had such a crush on Marilyn McCoo (shown here with brown hair), which was no small feat for a white kid in the South in those days. But I was big for my age, so anyone who might have wanted to say something.... Didn't. In the mid-70s, the lovely Marilyn and husband (grrr) Billy Davis Jr left the group and started performing as a duo. You should do a reaction to their 1977 Number 1 hit _You Don't Have To Be A Star (To Be In My Show)._ The couple celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary last year, but I'm still holding out hope she'll see the error of her ways and pick me. :)

You should listen to "One Less Bell to Answer" which they performed, though it was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Her voice...WOW. And they had many other good songs as well, which a number of your viewers have recommended. But "One Less..." will melt your heart.

This was the #1 song of 1969. Still sounds great now, 53 years later. It spent 6 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in April and May of '69. A great year for music. Marilyn McCoo is the gorgeous lead female whose voice really stands out in most of the group's vocals. Their debut hit came in 1967 with "Up Up and Away." But if you really want to hear their best songs, check out, "California Soul" and "Stoned Soul Picnic." You will fall in love with them. Later, they had some schmaltzy hits like "Last Night I DIdn't Get to Sleep At All," "One Less Bell to Answer," and "Wedding Bell Blues."

How can anyone be sad listening to this? Such great music and a great message in it. This was from the rock opera "Hair" and a lot of hits came out of that, but this was a HUGE Number One. Other hits from "Hair" were "Easy To Be Hard" by Three Dog Night, "Good Morning, Starshine" by Oliver, and "Hair!" by The Cowsills. But as for this song, I just love how their voices mesh together. They had other hits like "Stone Soul Picnic", "Wedding Bell Blues" (their other Number One), "One Less Bell To Answer" and "Up! Up! And Away!".

Aquarius is the opening song of the rock opera Hair and Let the Sunshine In was the closing song of Hair. The producers of Hair asked the 5th Dimension to record these songs in 1969. These songs were written by the creators and producers of the rock opera Hair which started in London 1969 before moving to the U.S. Galt MacDermot, James Rado, and Gerome Ragni. By 1970, there were several casts performing Hair in the U.K. and all over the U.S. I attended twice in 1970, the first at the Blackstone Theater in Chicago and second at Northern Illinois University. Loved the plays but the movie that came out some years later lacked the same feel as the live performance.

The taller lady (Marilyn McCoo) and the lead singer on the second song (Billy Davis Jr.) have been married since 1969 and are still going strong. THIS IS THE DAWNING OF THE AGE OF AQUARIUS-
~ Opening hook of the medley "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine" performed by the 5TH DIMENSION, merged two songs from the controversial, and in turn groundbreaking Broadway smash, "HAIR". Synchronicity and Serendipity joined forces when a wallet lost was returned to one of the groups members while performing in New York by Hair's producer, Michael Butler and mutual show invitations ensued.
Butler, son of the wealthy Co-founder of the Village of Oak Brook, Illinois, the Midwest's version of Beverly Hills, was thus birth-righted an "All Access Social Pass" to the American Royalty of the times, most notably including JFK, whom as a Senator he advised on Middle East and Indian matters. During a failed run for the Illinois Senate in 1967, he developed an anti-Vietnam War focus, and after seeing the original limited run production and being blown away, acquired the rights, reworked the show (adding the infamous nude scene) and from its re-opening in April 1968 ; It ran for 1,742 performances. The author was lucky enough to attend one of those in 1969.
So pleased you and OTHERS of Gen Z, Zillennials, et al are discovering this song! It means we are indeed at the dawning of the AQUARIAN AGE- and you folks- will be picking up the torch from BOOMERS to ZOOMERS. (the folks in between, not so much, all Semi- to Un-woke, big yikes for them).- HEY- we took care of Vietnam ending, women's rights, Civil rights, Gay/Lesbian rights, Trans (which I am-sort of battle continues), and brought you the internet. Not bad for one generation's work! Oh- and I-phones. Can't forget Steve.
"Aquarius/Sunshine won the 1969 Grammy for "Song of the Year".
IMPORTANT LESSON HERE IN HISTORICAL TERMS-WHERE REAL CHANGE BEGAN< 1969-5th Dimension's #1 Hit for 6 weeks in April and May 1969- Nailing IT! -the Zeitgeist of that moment. The ensuing weeks and months included Woodstock, "An Aquarian Exposition"; the Beatles "Get Back" an anti-prejudice ode bumped "Aquarius/Sunshine" to number 2; Charles Manson became the face of Evil; and the Stonewall Riots marked the violent birth of the LGBTQ+ movement.

I was in my college production of HAIR way back in the eighties. I had to sing the lead for Aquarius behind the curtain because our Earth Mother actress couldn't hit the high notes but I could.
Was I embarrassed? Should I have been?
36 years later still undecided but it was sure fun.

@@lee48lee68 thanks. In my mid fifties and can still hit MOST of those notes. Most, not all. But it was so much fun back in the day.

The woman who had the good amount of yellow in her dress is married to the lead singer. They celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary a few months ago.

That is incredible. Incredible that a person at your age is so shocked at the song. It’s so funny.

I keep seeing all these channels where people are reacting to the 5th Dimension because they had never heard them before. It's so hard to believe because they were my favorite band back in the late 60s early 70s. Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr were married and are still married. They also had a TV show back in the 80s they did as a couple called Solid Gold where they played music and featured the Solid Gold dancers. You should read thr history of the band. They were college educated superstars. Play their whole album one day and you will recognize some of the songs (I hope) because they had a lot of hits.

I've gone through all the reactions too, and the brilliant thing is EVERYONE reacts the same way when the chorus starts. Massive smiles and joy.😂

This is called a "Medley", two songs smashed together to make one song. This was the biggest medley the Fifth Dimension ever had but is not their only medley. Another medley was three songs smashed together. It is called Medley : Declaration - A Change Is Gonna Come - People Gotta Be Free. This is from their 1970 album called Portrait which spawned four top 40 hits. They are ; Puppet Man, One Less Bell To Answer, Save The Country and This Is your Life. Portrait is a truely great album without a bad song on it, well worth an album review!
