Joe Osborn was part of The Wrecking Crew of L.A. studio musicians. He backed a long list of artists including the Carpenters and the Fifth Dimension. Joe usually played exactly what was written, but he was given free rein to jam out on Let the Sun Shine In, and this was the magnificent result.

This is from the Broadway hit musical "Hair". (There's a great movie of it.) I saw it live, and was a lot of fun. VERY 60's! One of the notable things about it was that a few members of the cast appeared at the end in full frontal nudity. A shock to many, fabulously cutting-edge to some of us. Very cool reaction, Harri !

Joe Osborn was given free reign for the bassline on this song. That's his legendary bassline throughout Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In. He later discovered and produced the Carpenters, recording them in his converted garage and had Hal Blaine on drums (a fellow 'Wrecking Crew' member), who also played on this recording. The other great Wrecking Crew bass player was Carol Kaye, who played on countless recordings from the late 50s to the 80s. Not sure if there will ever be another concentration of such highly talented musicians being assembled in one studio.

The 5th Dimension went to see the stage play "Hair" and heard this song combo sung by the cast and knew it was a hit, so they went to the studio and recorded a cover of the song, which promptly become a huge hit.
At the time, I was pretty much in love with Marilyn McCoo, the lead singer, she was so talented and so unbelievably gorgeous. Hell, she's an old woman and still looks damned good today. Great group!

This tune defines the age. It swept across the nation in a joyous celebration of what was hoped would be a new age of love and brotherhood. It sounds naïve and corny now, but then it was REAL. Harri you nailed it! (what an awesome bass line, so clean and driving the music)

The alpha and omega of the musical Hair! Aquarius starts off the show and Let the Sunshine In is the closer. In between is one of the best movies about the turbulent late 60s early 70s. If you have not seen it you should because in addition to these two songs are I Got Life, Hair, Black Boys/White Boys, Easy to Be Hard (by Cheryl Barnes (not the Three Dog Night cover)), Good Morning Sunshine and the lead in to Sunshine In is Flesh Failures. This is only about half the songs but almost all of these saw radio airplay.

In the Oscar winning rockumentary Questlove dropped last year, "Summer of Soul", 5th Dimension lead singer Billy Davis Jr. tells the story of how an chance encounter in a cab ride led to this version of these two songs. Both are from the 1967 rock musical Hair, which spawned multiple hits including "Easy to Be Hard" by Three Dog Night, "Good Morning Starshine" by Oliver, as well as this number one smash hit. "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" blends the two bookend songs from the musical together to sort of sum up the whole era. The second song is actually named "The Flesh Failures (Let the Sunshine In)" and the original Broadway soundtrack recording of it is quite funky. Check it out when you can.

This was a sort of 60's youth anthem at the end of the 1960's , in 1969. Fifth Dimension, along with the Mam's and the Papas, were the top vocal singing group who generally did not play instruments, mostly sang, of the 1960's/early 1970's. [ John Phillips of the Mamas and Papas was a guitar player and flute player however]

This was from the Broadway musical first performed in 1967. Big hits came out from it over the next few years.
Renewed burst of popularity after release of the movie years later. If you can, try to find videos. They were amazing to see : colourful 60s funky clothing, dance moves.
The mid 60s and 70s were a fabulous time , yet full.of protests for women's rights, against war, poverty, racism. Political upheavals, religious upheavals, terrorism, hijackings, revolts. Intense upheaval of life after the placid yet seething with undercurrents of the 50s. Does it sound familiar?
That song was, like many of the times , a rallying cry, a protest to the current unrest. Not really ahead of the times, sadly, it is just as relevant now.
    Not much changes, it seems.
But it is a great song and I was just wowed by it the first time I saw it on TV. Most likely the Ed Sullivan Show.
Where I also remember seeing the BEATLES first ever US performance.

After the show Billy wanted to drive to the hotel, and the cops pulled him over on the way. When they realized who he was, even though it was obvious he'd had a couple drinks, they handed the keys back to him and they gave him a police escort to the hotel- and got some autographs. These are the opening and closing songs from the rock opera Hair. The 5th Dimension was asked by the producers of Hair to record these songs. Hair started in London in 1969 then moved to the states. I saw it twice in 1970.

The songs are from the musical "Hair", the 5th Dimension did not write these songs, however they did a great job performing them. I saw them live in Central Park New York in the summer of 69, it was a free concert.

They were backed by the Wrecking Crew which had a female bassist. You should hear the Magic Garden...full of psychedelic soul! Cool reaction!

The song is taken from the musical Hair that was extremely popular in the late 1960s and reflective of the overall feeling of love and togetherness that permeated that era in reaction to the Veit Nam War. You should check out Marilyn McCoo and her husband Billy DavIs, Jr. who are the lead singers of the group and who have their own careers and are still going strong. Their hits were Marry Me Bill and One Less Bell to Answer. Marilyn is 78 years old and still touring with Billy .

It's us old hippies's National Anthem.
It's one song with two chapters. "Age of ..." is journey and arrival..." Sun Shine In..." is once within the Age.
