The car wizard is correct I had an Interstate battery that was less than 4 years old and failed at 20 below zero. It developed a bad cell. Replaced it with Duralast gold, 5 + years and still cranked over at around 15 to 20 below zero.
Lucky number 420 plus I get to watch the wizards work on the Duramax swap. This is great viewing for my Sunday afternoon. I’m excited that he showed the long extension method because there’s a lot of people out there that let a problem that can be fixed this way get the best of them. I’ve been building ambulances for almost 23 years now, and I couldn’t tell you how many times this has saved my ass
I worked at a Kubota dealership. The battery delivery guy said the same thing. The manufacturer just puts on the appropriate label. The batteries that go to dealerships seem to be high quality. My Honda has had the same Kubota battery for 7 years.
Batteries are identical from shop to shop. Doesn't matter if it's from O'Reilley, Autozone, or Napa or whoever you purchase your batteries from. It's usually from the same few manufacturers who then sell them bulk to retailers.
The Duralast Gold is an AGM battery from a good manufacturer, IMO. I forget which one, but they do make AGM batteries for much of the market. I don't know much about the rest of the Duralast line though.
I still have my 36" extension and wobbly sockets that I purchased just for tranny changes in my second generation Camaros... A 72 SS and a 79 Z28 clone... Thanks for sharing... Keep up your awesomeness...
Purchased a 36” long extension from NAPA when I was a teenager doing my first transmission. 30 years later and I still have that same extension: used it every time I’ve R&R a transmission..
Glad to see your keeping up with this. Going to be a great truck. Leave some room in your cross member so you can add shims this will let you move the transmission up or down to fine tune pinion angle once you get the thing on the ground without needing to touch the rear axle. You can add shims to get it a degree off then just tighten down the mount to hold the shims in place. If you decide to lower the truck a bit or add bags or just put newer suspension which may raise things a bit in the future you will have lets say 1/2" of adjustment at that cross member and will not need to make a new cross member.
So cool you are DuraMaxing the pickup. 10 years ago I paid $5,000 for LMZ with Transmission. Planned to install in 1997 Z71. Never happened engine was stolen
This was a good one, it’s the stuff a lot of you tubers leave out cause they struggle with it. At least he didn’t bang on about it for to long like when he had a motor from a wrecker and new head bolts from somewhere but he banged on about those 2 absolutely ridiculously over and over. It didn’t work on me as I fully tuned the brain out because he drove me nuts. 😩 All without warning!
It’s a shame this channel is headed the shameless ad direction. I pay premium subscription to NOT have ads shoved in my face every 30 seconds, and Wizard was one of the last channels left that I could count on not having BS peddled to me by the creator of the video. I’m already tiring of it. I’m on the fence of unsubscribing at this point, and finding smaller channels that haven’t turned into corporate prostitutes yet. 🤷♂️
@@uasparts well I can totally understand you frustration I’d be wilder if I was paying for the privilege and the get that crap. The bullshit that went on advertising during his rebuild of the Northstar engine which was interesting but the amount of times he mentioned the wrecker that supplied the engine and the upgraded head bolt supplier was enough to drive me around the bend 😩
The transmission jack moving tip is so underrated and great tip!. I've seen a bunch of people move it with the tranny and then wonder why they're an inch off and it won't line up.
Great seeing you and the folks we all love and enjoy so much back. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to enjoy you and your family and friends again here on RUclips
I don’t have a 3ft extension. What I do is link together what I have. There will be a slight ark but it doesn’t matter, like you said it works best. I don’t have a transmission jack either, I use a floor jack. I should say I used to use a floor jack, I have no intention of doing it anymore.
I love your videos and Mrs Wizard's Way, but I despise diesel engines. As long as you're happy, it's perfect. Happy Trails, see you in the next video 😊
Car Wizard. I love your stories. Certainly you must have a story about customers wanting to bring you parts to save markup, instead of allowing you to pick them out.
Yup, any good shop would have one and he even stated he had a quite expensive one, probably better that what autozone has. Plus not that I care, but technically you have to state if your video has a sponsor.
Since you’re doing diesel stuff, it would be cool to see you swap 4BT into an old square body style defender. Also, if you ever plan on selling that Citroen, please let your viewers know first. If it’s reasonably priced, it would be nice to get one of those already sorted from someone reputable. Still upset you got rid of your FJ cruiser.
I’m wrestling with a decision about a transmission now. Going to pull an old tired 350 and TH400 from a 74 3/4 ton and want to go 4 speed auto so I have the age old debate of built 700R4 or 4L80e and the pros, cons, and costs of each Can drive a fella mad. I have a clean junk yard 700R4 on hand but it’s stock so it’s meh and to go to 4L80 Le with controller box and mechanical Speedo tail shaft conversion, etc the costs start to stack up fast for an old truck.
This truck makes frankinstine look like Barbie and I love it. Ps I get Walmart batteries for 88$ with the proper cranking amps and a 3 yr warranty but I feel u on the sponsorship
As far as batteries and sponsors, you can get a battery from auto zone that lasts past its warranty date or one that doesn’t. Same for every other name battery. I’ve had Walmart batteries that lasted well past their expiration date. In the last 40 years or so I’ve only had a couple of Interstate batteries not last beyond the expiration date but it does happen. There are only a few battery manufacturers in the U.S. GNB and Exide plus a couple of others I can’t remember. They make all the batteries for everyone else. I’ve had good luck with group 31 no name tractor/semi batteries I’ve purchased from Kenworth, Volvo dealers for just a little over $100. Only 12 months warranty but they last way past that. I use them in all my farm diesel tractors. If there’s room for one, I’d try them in the duramax. 950-1000 cold cranking amps rated and wouldn’t have to mess with two batteries. I’ve eliminated all the two battery parallel hookups around my place.
Yeah I agree you can get a good one or a bad one from any brand. I will just stick with my Walmart batteries for now, currently have one that is 12 years old and started my v8 with no issues when temperatures drop below zero and stayed below freezing for about 10 days here.
Some of the things that I don't miss about a diesel. 2 batteries that wear out faster in a diesel. Glow plugs, cold starting that kills batteries, more oil to change, fuel filters to change, the rotten smell they give off, is there water in the fuel. Why won't it start, bad injectors, someone put gas in the tank. The head gaskets are leaking, 20 grand down the drain. I really don't miss a diesel engine.
If you decide to build it a little and tune it, it will throw that half-ton around like a toy. I love my Duramax 3/4 ton and can’t imagine a lighter setup for the beast of an engine.
for the purpose of improved weight distribution and more engine compartment space, what about fabricating a housing across the bed's width up against the cab, or 2 separate housings, one on each side, in which to house the batteries?
@@geriscape When I was in Elementary school in Mish-Gin in the 1970's, my teacher Mr. Upinitza-Pogycrogwog used to use that term. Haven't heard it much since.
It'll be interesting to see how the factory 8.6 rear end will hold up to the power of the duramax. I'll be expecting a saginaw or corporate swap in the near future lol.
A couple of things I'm curious about. The first one is the frame. I believe the 2500HD series trucks come with a heavier frame than the 1500. My question is, can the 1500 frame handle the torque without undo flexing and possibly stressing the frame? Secondly, are you sure that 480L transmission can handle the torque from the dirtymax?
I've had nothing but bad luck with Duralast. At least they come with a warranty, but you know what? It gets really old dragging a 30lb+ battery to Autozone every couple months. I will not be getting another battery from Autozone once the warranty runs out.
You didn't bolt the torque converter to the flexplate, or you didn't mention it. The converter is probably secured to the trans with a piece of 2" flat bar which has to come off first.
I am going to let the battery advert stuff slide. However, the diesel guys know you don’t mix old and new batteries or batteries that are not the same manufacturer. You can cause battery damage from uneven amp draw/charging. Worse case scenario the battery doing all the work fails putting acid all over the place. The junkyard 4L80e is going to last two seconds behind that Duramax. It won’t take the torque and it will fail due to clutch slip. Better than the 4l60 but not by much. Oh well.
Replace that front seal on that transmission wizard. Know your a professional, but that is always one that seems to slip by the pros, since everyone seems to be in a hurry.
