- We challenged ourselves to make a video game that uses barcode scanners as an input device. We had one day to make the game. The result is a co-op space adventure unlike anything you've seen before. Beep. Beep!

Wow this is a really cool concept, if you painted some foam models with the barcodes on them that could be really immersive and fun.
Could be a theme park attraction or something, yeah. What we built is a bit basic, haha. :D
@@JonasTyroller indeed, this is a good idea to be honest.
@@JonasTyroller make an escape room with it!
Some codes could be split in two and have to be combined to be scannable. I don't know how well those scanners would work, but what if there were codes hidden in the environment, like the game The Witness?
Beep. Beep.
Beep. Beep.
Beep. Beep.
Beep. Beep.
as always, drink milk, kick billy, and beat your will-
Language.
Beep. Beep.
This exact concept was made in the early 2000's by Radica. They called it "Scannerz" and it was a small handheld LCD device that lets you scan barcodes to find monsters and catch them. You can use these monsters to battle other friends that own a Scannerz device or you could battle other monsters found in barcodes to level up :)
Maaaaan what a crazy fun day that was :)!! 🔥
BEEP BEEP
I genuinely hope to see more people make games that can be played using barcode scanners!
Hi editor shelf
Especially during peak commute times 😆
Eh, but only because the hardware is so specific. However... if the game can be played with a phone scanning bar or qr codes, then we're talking.
@@Kenionatus ur a gaddam genius
That's actually cool, not surprising if some gameshow or RUclipsr will make a contest of this in the future.
Yeah, it'd be kina perfect for that. :D
I really like the idea of emulating what it's like to be at the helm of something like a battleship, with everyone moving around and making quick decisions to get everything done
It's gameplay in the vein of Baratrauma, but in your living room. :)
normally i watch gamedev videos expecting to learn a thing or two about good design or game balance or player rewarding, but this video taught me a much more important lesson. if it plugs into the computer, make a game out of it.
amazing execution, easily the most chaotic neutral game i've ever seen.
1:47 while most barcode scanners have that modus (especially the cheaper ones), usually you can also directly get the data from a COM port (or similar) and not have it spit out the keys as a HID device.
Love the creativity you guys put into these challenge videos. Very fun! :D
4:15 just realized that screen is custom.
just wow jonas you definitely deserve way more credit than you get.
I love this idea! Awesome execution as well! :D
this mini series has been so fun and inspiring!!
This is the definition of "creative process" in video form... Amazing... XD
You guys rock!!!
0:23 "It's gonna be like an escape room and a VR game, just without the escaping or the VR"
:D
Great video Jonas and Blackthornprod!
I like how much fun you are having with the finished game😂😂😂
WOW, this looks like a ton of fun. Fantastic idea. I love it.
Thank you for explaining this thoroughly!
this was super cool the wat u set it up was unique and made it feel like an actual spaceship
I like how you guys are always coming with wacky ideas in this series.
Out of all four experiments this one is definitely my favourite. It's innovative, yet very tactile and just seems like a lot of fun. There's so much potential, I'd enjoy more barcode-games!
Great finally, been waiting for this one
The game looks super fun! Great work!
The gameplay looked really fun. Super out of the box idea!
AMAZING proof of concept. would actually be fun to use in an escape room setting
I've seen someone else do a similar thing, but with a qr code, and they put the entire game in it, interesting take on this concept, and a nice video
really cool concept and excusion, damn i wanna try this out xD
How do you guys get these ideas?? Haha great work!
Wow! I love that game! you guys know how to have fun
So informative, thanks a lot!
Give Jonas a round of applause for making this, i have never seen anything like this in my life.
Such a cool concept!! Could see myself playing this at a arcade 😂❤️
Noa's face really made up my day. Thanks a lot!
4:14 the qr code on the bsod links to a google search that says "Wow, you actually sacnned it. 10/10. Please share this webpage with your friends! Thanks!"
Idk how yo do it but you come up with the strangest ideas but make them enjoyable
Good to see you and Noah together ! :D
There was an old game system which used barcodes to create a sort of RPG with various pieces of artwork on many series of cards. If a series existed in the 90s as a videogame, it would be a series on the Barcode Battler. I'm pretty sure the companies that worked on the system also made a barcode related board game.
"Scannerz" made by Radica ;)
Wow, you actually sacnned it. 10/10. Please share this webpage with your friends! Thanks!
Cool idea, looks really fun!
I would love to see this in an escape room or something, great concept Jonas
I feel like it'd be really interesting to see this not as a cooperative game, but a competitive one - each player gets to place 4 barcodes and all the barcodes the players are required to use, so they can't place them in outlandish spots neither of them will be able to reach. Then having barcodes attached to one's back becomes extremely interesting.
I was waiting for this one
Amazing idea. Good job!!
That's a really good idea!
For your git problem: Would always recommend using a .gitignore file when you use git in combination with Unity, which excludes folders like Library, Temp etc....
You could arrange the inputs like a keyboard ... and ... oh ... nvm ...
... keep it up though. Love your creativity in these messy times. Grüße! :)
Oh, that's quite a cool idea, love it a lot
Wow this is so cool. I really want to try this.
This is a fantastic idea!
Next up on Jonas Tyroller: Making a game with a cheezit as an input system
Jonas never seems to run out of fun and interesting game ideas
Hi Jonas, it’s Noa’s ma here, I had a great laugh seeing you both having such fun! You guys are just over flowing with creativity and energy, fabulous 👏👏👏
Reminded me of my days at ITU, we did similar games all the time in classes
A barcode scanner game reminds me of Skannerz, a 90s American handheld funky game that let you fight (and maybe train?) pixelated monsters when you scanned a bar code... Haven't thought about that in a while!
I think about it every couple of years! I thought about it a month or so ago and holy moly the resale on it was a lot for what I remember. I had a lot of fun with them
The shelve still has that one word that jonas wrote in the video about making a button fun. Nice
Awesome project!
Those type of barcode scanners can be configured to append prefix and suffix characters to the scanned barcode. If you appended an X or Y you could differentiate which person scanned the barcode.
This is such a good and fun idea.
Imagine having a small screen next to each barcode all linked to one main larger machine screen in the center this way you are able to see the screen no matter your position in the room i feel this would add another layer of immersion
This guy is at another level. Inspire and surprise us everytime. Maybe he has found an idea for metaverse gaming 😍🔥
Many, many years ago - likely before you were born - there was a little gadget you could get from cereal boxes. It would read barcodes from products (UPC barcodes) and turn it into a 'warrior'. Then you would 'battle' your friends' 'barcode' warriors. I don't recall the exact details because I was very young at the time, but I was fascinated and always wanted to recreate this
Scannerz
Wow, this really looks fun
oh man, this could definitely be an escape room kinda thing
Wish I could play it lol
This is really cool. You could explore RFID/NFC tags and readers as another weird type of input for another fun challenge. I am currently working with it for a card game project of mine and it would be interesting to see what you would do.
Great video !
Seems like a fun and chaotic game to enjoy with friends or family :D
Who needs a controller when you can use a barcode scanner lol.
I love the fact that the bsod part of this video actually has a qr code easter egg
Reminds me of "Scan Command: Jurassic Park"
A game that included a cheap scanner that would give you different results for the same code.
Also you could just scan your carpet.
thats a really cool idea
I can see this being bought by supermarkets for staff training to get that super fast barcode scanning technique nailed down
seems like the type of thing you could run in like an escape room or vr type style game
Very cool concept
This seems hell lot of fun 😁
if this experience looks like something you're into, there's a board game with a similar feeling called *space cadets*! highly recommend checking it out.
Very cool and just like a VR game.
I remember seeing on RUclips, someone playing music with the barcode scanning sounds
None is going to talk about how good that food looked
to increase difficulty add plasic wrap over barcodes so you have to try angling the scan gun to hit just right
Best game to play as an employee in a store without getting caught by your boss
You should make something like "lovers in a dangerous spacetime" but with this concept. it would be awsome
This gameplay concept seems like the greatest party game ever, would totally buy a barcode scanner to play this
In the meantime, you can try _Spaceteam_ :)
This concept reminds me of this fun old console called the Barcode Battler, very cool!
"Scannerz" by Radica :)
@@JohnCarcer I don't know what that is but it looks pretty neat
absolute madlad
Creativity in its best
Reminds me of that band that plays music with barcodes
Yay a new video!
Going partially back to old-fashioned videogaming (magnavox odyssey used game boards along side the programme cards to play the games)
There is a Jurassic Park game based on scanning called Scan Command. Scanning things would make your dinosaurs more powerful, and you would fight other dinos in the story mode. Pretty old now lol
Awesome stuff guys!
I'm currently working on creating an incredibly pointless barcode scanner keyboard. Barcode gang unite!
I like it. It would be great if something just like this will be available in arcades.😉
Awesome.
At first it seemed like a stupid idea, but it actually looks fun!
i feel so inspired by this
7-Eleven clerk-type game
amazing video
2:50 that looks bussin fr
"isn't this just a harder way of making a game?"
jonas: "yes"
"then why did you do it"
jonas: "haha funny barcode go *beep beep* "
but like no joke, this is really freakin' cool.
For everyone who wants to try this and doesnt have a barcode scanner, there are some apps for phones that simulate barcode scanners
This was cool 😃... maybe barcodes should be around the monitor, so you would see what's going on at all times, but it was perfect 👍
I think not being able to see it all the time actually makes it better. It's definitely more frantic that way.
At work I currently write software for a long range barcodescanner strappe to the top of your hand as some kind of glove. I want to play your game with this thingy^^
Plus I can really imagine making such a game on mobile with the camera as scanner.
This would go perfectly in an arcade or something.
