Let me know what you think! I wanna see what you create! :)
thank you jon
Great vid
Can’t wait to see what project you have next
Thank you for making this level editor Jonas
Will this be making its way onto consoles?
As a programmer, making a level editor sounds super daunting. Doing it in 15 days sounds just impossible. Consider me VERY impressed. I'll give this a try right now. :)
Hope you like it! :)
it seems like a daunting task but also I feel like if he did this a long time ago in this game's development it would have saved a lot of time since massive amounts of level design is even more daunting in some ways
@@JamAttack That's true. It would have made creating the normal levels a lot quicker. Well, in hindsight you always know better.
@@JamAttack your name sounds familiar... Do you play GD?
I'm still working on mine after 2 months and i still can't create an object (i can but it won't do anything) cause i need to implement undo and redo, copy and paste and a lot more
When I was little, I always wanted a level editor in every game haha
I was the same. Still like level editors
I still do
And i still do...
I would spend 99% of my time figuring out how to use the "triggers" in the level editor than actually making a decent level
My favorites are, Happy wheels, Fancade, Geometry dash, Baba is you, and Badlands
@@Zoltoks same

7:00 "I wish I've had this when making the main game" I wonder why many developers decide to build a game which is blocky and totally suitable to have a convenient level editor for, but don't build the level editor first and later discover that this would have been totally helpful and would've decreased development time more than it would've increased it, but now is very time-consuming to do.
There is already a scene editor in Gamemaker, so there would be no need to create a level editor. Plus, fixing bugs in a level editor can be very time-consuming. I would use the tools I already have.
Often times the game engine works fine as the level editor. If using a custom made level editor it would be harder to add new items, harder to save/load levels, and it wouldn’t just work like this… game devs aren’t gonna make super nice visual editors with ui for themselves. If he had made it he would still need to add alot to it for it to work in the game.
Impressive. You'll likely be seeing even more annoyingly difficult creations in your feed!
Lovely!! :D

Hi Jonas!
A huge feature for any game that has an editor is a way to share user created levels easily with the community and do it inside the editor(so people don't have to resort to external 3rd party sites).
Create a way to upload levels online and browse other creations.
I would take it one step further and make it possible to rank maps, comment on them, have "featured maps", top maps, search maps with different tags and so on, this will also create allot of re-playability for the game and make it last much longer.
One of the best and most cost efficient things indy game devs can do to make their game more popular and last longer is to motivate the community to make some of the content for you, not doing it is a missed opportunity.
I have a ton more suggestions, but il keep it short for now ;-)
Keep up the good work!
Steam Workshop Integration?
Yeah, definitely agree. For the moment I'm thinking either Steam Workshop or maybe mod.io.
@@JonasTyroller Oh… I remember you saying In the FAQ on the discord that you would NOT add steam workshop.
I think you shouldn’t use steam workshop for cross-platform map making. Well, That’s when it releases fully.
@@Pixxeell___ you could use workshop just in the steam pc builds
@@JonasTyroller ok but what about the compose users.cant you make something like a in-game library of fanmade levels without using things that make it PC only?
my dude! this is monumental for an indie game! I'm so dang inspired =D
yes, the level editor is the reason geometry dash isnt dead
@@jeffersonbellon4432 that is what I was about to say
@@jeffersonbellon4432 wait, it isn't
@@func_e yes it is, geometry dash official levels would get boring, AND DON'T GET STARTED ON THE LEVEL PACKS, THOSE GET VERY BORING SO FAST, gauntlets would be more like extra levels and well, extra basically means, I forgot to add these cool stuff to the game so have it, the level editor let people play more detailed, creative, and you get the idea
@@SasamuelTheCool lit
*Making a basic platformer level editor is easy.*
*Making a good, proper level editor is the hard part. :)*
Sure, we'll see how it goes. ;)
idea: making only a couple voice lines for squid about the levels (examples below), but allow players to record their messages.
(here are the examples!:
"wait. this wasn't here before!"
or if you've already freed squid:
"i've discovered some new data in this simulation and -oh, you're here too!"
"okay, okay, so there are recordings here. i'll play them to ensure your utmost annoyance!"
"sure, you can mute those messages, but you can't mute me!"
"oh. now you're trying to mute me. well, (I'll allow it | you'll pay the price!)" (the (|) there is about if they've already muted them or not. after the "you'll pay the price!" thing, the usual "unmute me!" stuff follows.)
"oh hey, a level beaten! what does that do?"
)
but also, like, what does beating levels do?
yes
I love the aesthetics of the little animations on your level blocks. Recently found your channel and I'm really grateful for all the dev tips and especially niche knowledge like Steam page design!
Are there legal/tax difficulties or pitfalls with releasing games independently in Germany as you do?
Thank you. Happy you enjoy the content. Yes, there are probably some legal and tax pitfalls. You solve that problem by getting a tax and a legal consultant. :/
@@JonasTyroller Thanks for your reply! The situation seems quite similar here (Austria). Perhaps a future video of yours can discuss the legal side of indie dev in the EU! In any case, I'm looking forward for the future growth of this channel, best of luck!
Can't wait for Squid's personalized tutorial on how to use the editor to make the most painful, gruesome levels on the planet beating the likes of Mario Maker Kaizo.
What about Levelhead?
Yo, this looks super fun! Can't wait to try it out and create some levels I'll hate my self for :D
This devlog shows how much work goes into "little features" (not my wording) like a level editor, holy ...
Also really looking forward to your next game project :)
Thanks for the kind words. Curious to see what you come up with. :)
@@JonasTyroller yo
I really hope we can make multiple levels with this editor so that we could make a fully fledged game like the Super Worlds in Mario Maker, or Lunar Magic
You mean a series of levels or mini campaign. Yeah, I think that'd be totally necessary as usually WYS levels are at its best when they're short but people are refusing to make short levels if you can't put them in a series it seems. :D
@@JonasTyroller yes this, but I more meant ways to travel through rooms. It looks like right now you can only make 1 room per save? Correct me if I'm wrong
@@CrateSauce Yep, 1 room per save, the level you make is tied to the save so there can only be 1 level per save.
After trying out the editor, i can say that the level editor is still definitely missing some features and can sometimes be quite clunky to use, but overall you did an amazing job considering the amount of time that you had. Great video!
Thanks a lot for trying it out. Would love if you could specify what you found clunky about it using it so we can work on improving it for the finished version. :)
@@JonasTyroller adding a copy and paste option would be really nice (but i saw people requesting that on the discord too so I'm guessing it's already waiting to get implemented), for some reason it doesn't let you place blocks/other stuff above the UI which can be a bit annoying if you're trying to add things at the top left of the screen (this can be gotten around by expanding the camera moving range by placing down and later removing blocks when you're done, but a bit annoying nonetheless). Another thing is the camera moves rather slowly, and there's no way to speed it up. For example i made a really big hole (long falls can be used to clip through spikes but that's rather unrelated) and every time i wanted to get out of play mode and add something at the bottom of it i needed to scroll down for 10-15 seconds, which as you can imagine got pretty tiresome pretty quickly. Again, this editor is surprisingly good for the short amount of time that it was made in and I'm just pointing out some stuff that was a bit annoying for me personally :)
oh my god it's my color scheme in Jonas' vid mom get the camera
:D
I'm really excited for the level editor but to be honest i'm even more excited for the new project that starts in 6 weeks. Can't wait! :D
New Jonas Game launching in 2026!
@@TheBcoolGuy Yeah, it will take years
I love that you've added this! It's the perfect addition to help the community keep your game alive.
Honestly? You rock man. I use gms, and I've been using it for 11 years, and I still couldn't do something like this. Simply put, You Rock!
Jonas: Game developers *hate* UI tasks!
Me, a game developer: I love UI tasks
This is awesome! Can't wait to make impossibly hard levels.
Ahhhh! :D
So so cool. You’re a champ for doing this Jonas.
jonas the absolute legend, this is amazing to see!
0:49 Especially... *all of those years that have passed by to finish a "side project" flies by his mind*
Amazing Work! Love the effort you put into the game. Next you should make a community level sharing system. For example you can publish your levels online on a dashboard for others to try out. Similar to how geometry dash does it. Good luck on your next project!
Yeah, that'd be great. Thank you, thank you! :)
@@JonasTyroller no way is that gemty dsah refenck

Seriously Great work Jonas! I can't wait to see what levels people can come up with. I know from experience that making a level editor is super difficult. Can't wait to see what you come up with next, Prost!
This looks amazing!!! great job jonas!
This is impressive on top of making youtube videos.

@@JonasTyroller I kind of stopped working on my game
😅😅 because there are loads of platformers and my game is a platformer, so there's no use to continue working on it.
I agree
Really excited to see this! considering the time limit you've got a nicely polished looking level editor which looks like it'll be fun to use!
I definitely need to start learning how to develop a save/load system for my game. The level editor looks amazing!
5:48 how is it not a correct sound effect? It is fricking perfect!
I had some fun with editor. I would love to see features like basket ball, enemies, guns(and breakable blocks), dance, bubble thing & more. I hope it won't be that hard to add. Good luck!
Thats impressive well done
Very impressive work Mr Jonas.
Thank you for video. You know other people have problems with bugs, but at the same time you forget. This both entertaining and comforting and a reminder to just keep going.
I don't even have Will You Snail yet, but I've been following the devlogs for a couple years now. This looks super promising and the game looks fantastic. Good job, yo'.
dude, your commitment to the community is super inspiring
I made a quick video showing a tiny level I put together in 15 minutes. The editor controls are really juicy! The sound effects and visual design are great. The only thing that confused me was the property picker - I kept mixing up the left and right button. That would be a neat option to pick which one copys and which one pastes (or I should spend more time in the editor and get used to it). Fantastic work for such a short time!
Thanks a lot for the feedback. Appreciate it! :)
can't wait to see the new project! all thought remember to not feel pressured! 👍
today, i learned that ui is what frustrates people the most in game dev
ive personally had a lot of fun making ui because I don't code it
pretty thankful i started game dev with an engine that has full ui support
Inredible! Thank you Jonas!
Developing a game is one thing. But creating a leveleditor for a game is another serious topic! Nice work!
Awesome , can’t wait till it fully comes out !
I just hope it’ll be available on consoles. (Switch)
I kind of saw this coming but it's still so surprisingly awesome
As soon as I saw your comment on The Snailax Instillation tutorial I knew This was gonna happen.
Also, I like the use of Leitmotifs in the game.
I love the music that plays while in the level editor!!!!
i hope the level editor gets updated more often! can't wait for the dialogue :))
It's really well done for an alpha!
I think you should make a level editor editor to make making the level editor easier
Then make a level editor editor editor to make the level editor editor easier
I love when games have in game level editor. thats really cool
Really nice work with the feature it looked great! (Especially considering you made it in 15 days!)
Was gonna say, how you feeling for starting a new project, must be a mixture of excitement and nerves I imagine! :)
Very fun so far. Finally a team project again. :)
@@JonasTyroller Oh nice that sounds great for you! Can't wait to see!
I love how before making it work you spent your time adding polish. Like I would first make sure save/load and playmode works properly and then add things on top of it
I kinda wanted to "batch" different tasks as much as possible so I didn't have to do as much task hopping. The way I did it I could just finish the save load system in one session instead of having to temper with it after every new feature I add. :)
@@JonasTyroller Oh yeah that seems like a better idea and even better if you are sure you can build it in a day.
Will You Snail turned out amazing, and I can't wait for the next game
Thank you, thank you! :)
@@JonasTyroller :)
I cant wait for the first Kaizo Snail
really cool, that level editor is gonna be a game changer
Great! We got a level editor!
Now time to complain about the fact some levels in story mode have objects and features we can’t use in the level editor.
Haha. True. We're on it. :D
@@JonasTyroller that’s great, I mean there are TONS of ‘AAA’ games with level editors that still have this problem(tons of assets used in main gameplay that you can’t use in the level editors), I just hope NO GRAVITY makes it available on switch. (The level editor I mean)
The moment I saw the custom color palletes I thought to myself: "Snail++"
Awesome video!
Please, and I say please, as sooon as you collect enough good levels from the community, make a video playing the top 15 or something! Again please!
Really like your funny take on tutorials and also got some ideas how to approach my level editor =)
Vllt. sieht man sich ja auf der Gamescom ;)
Nice work!
That's crazy that you managed to do it...and surprisingly fast
Some tips:
1; If you want to publish a map you have to complete it (when you'll make that)
2; Add secret non-real walls (no hitbox)
Awesome!! :O
There's something I think should be fixed though, when I entered the level editor while having underwater levels switched, the game just crashed :P
I like how the level editor doesnt look like just an afterthought
Thanks for the level editor Jonas :D
Thank me when it's done. I feel like it's gonna take a bit longer.
Of course, the ONE time I'm not home for a couple of days, this happens. This honestly looks amazing though, can't wait to try it :)
Haha, yes, hope you enjoy! :)
Thanks again for another great video. Now that we're talking about requests, I'm still wondering when the next Wowie jam is😁
Oh, right. :D
Why is the start of this so funny where you're holding the level editor lol
That's a lot done for 15 days, and with some level of polish too, Impressive
Really Cool, since you want to utilize steam workshop for level sharing you could also consider making Themes sharable with the workshop.
First impressions are good
Tbh I subbed 2 seconds after clicking on the video
You're a magnificent human being, Jonas
Dude honestly well done! Can I ask how did you code the part in 8:05 and handle saving and loading the level?(loading the level into gamemaker itself to play if that makes any sense😅)
idk why but seeing all that coding just reminds me of when i have a lot of mods for a game then i realise there's something not working right so i spend a lot of time messing with the mods to see what is the issue and it takes so much time, and i want to start coding eventually so it's interesting
level editors are amazing
Oh god I’ve been flashbanged when you swapped the colours lol
i love the ui coding excited dance :D
I feel your pain with Day 2 where testing is necessary. That's why I have paid for an additional plugin to the engine I use which makes it intuitive to write console code. You can execute it on the server, client or in development and save it for later. This can be used to test cheating, unwritten code or automate tasks like welding 1000 pieces together.
WOW! You're pretty amazing man.
Call it: Super snail maker mode
I think I'd get into trouble if I do that.
Can't wait to see what people make.
Same. Exciting. :)
I just got this game for Christmas it is so GLORIOUS
(Btw I’m on the volley ball boss)
Wow you made this in game maker 2,
In 6 months, I was able to make a box move and jump
shelly should have a construction hat on when playing the level from the editor
What Jonas didn't realize is that was EXACTLY the right sound for the rectangle tool. Also, glad to know you feel UI programming is just as tedious and time consuming as I always felt it was.
The most difficult aspect of Game Maker is UI editing, thankfully, this is not the case with Godot or Unity3d!
Best of luck in your devlog progress.
Let’s go! We can finally make our own levels now! Can’t wait to try this out!
Excited to see what you make! :)
@@JonasTyroller you mean “us” since we’re literally describing us because we’re nonbinary. Sorry for the correction and sorry if you’re confused by the way but its true we really are nonbinary but we’re excited to see your reaction to our level once we’re done with it though! 😅 :)
@@thedraftingax5963 no? "you" can mean several people
Fun fact, you can edit the levels in UndertaleModTool! Will you Kaizo is a possible mod to make, creating new/modifying the game code is sadly not possible yet... (only available in the Bleeding Edge Build)
Awesome.
I actually really want this game. I'll probably get it as soon as I switch to a better bank
UI is so much fun! /s
I had an idea seeing MR. DANCE undrrwater, imagine him having a floatie!
There's a level editor now? Ok I'm definitely buying this game.
This Makes me want to try and make a game where you build your path to the goal but your limited to the things you can place
Can't wait for when this is out on console
I wouldn’t say that, because, I obviously want this to come to console, but it seems like it would be pretty difficult to port over, although I hope if they make it for consoles they make it for *switch* aswell as Xbox and ps
Woooo yeah!
Finally, good video as usual jonas
Thank you. :)
