Whoever promised the kid the money should be fired immediately and I really hope it isn’t the head coach. A well known University can’t afford 100k?? Where are their boosters and why are they letting this happen?? Very bizarre story and Orlovsky makes no sense because he knows Bama and Georgia have all the money in the world to pay its players.

The assistant coach. Thats like an older sibling telling a lil brother he can go to a party without telling the parents. Lol

People just talk. You don’t get a 4 year scholarship to play college football it’s year to year. You blow out your knee there goes your free education. That whole narrative has always been a ignorant lie.
Not necessarily. I walked on at ole miss earned a scholarship transferred to Memphis had to sit out a year due to ncaa eligibility rules at that time transferring D1 schools. The year I had to sit out I broke my foot and started the following year at safety both years on scholarship. It depends on the caliber player you are. They only get rid of you if you suck lol😂

Or when UAB mishandled their money and shut the whole program down and left many players with no backup.
@@itisnottaken4444 Agreed. But ppl need to educate themselves about things such as this. I came out of high school in 03. I knew about the pros and cons that comes with a scholarship. It’s a business. That’s why it starts before you get to college. Kids need to be just as focused on their grades like they’re with sports. My father has 10 kids no wife multiple jobs and had to hustle. My father instilled in me how important my grades were just in case I do get injured, which I did my senior year which why I had to walk on. Thank God I graduated with honors because of what my father instilled in me. It’s 2024 for this to be still going on you can’t blame the institutions completely because it’s a business and if we want to participate in this business we need to educate ourselves. My coach David Cutcliffe at ole miss before he left and went to Duke promised me a scholarship but I stayed the course and earned my scholarship with Ed Ogeron. Also knew there was a possibility he would do that.
Just like Greeny said, had the NCAA had reasonable rules to begin with, this would’ve probably never happened. From the beginning, the student athlete should’ve been paid at least a little bit. This BS of the “normal” college student being allowed to work at PT job to cover some expenses and such while in college but the student athlete couldn’t is ridiculous. I get their “payment” in a lot of cases is a full ride scholarship but, a scholarship isn’t gonna cover the expenses if a player wants to go home for a weekend or go out on a date, etc….
What specific rule would have prevented this?
No dude. ESPN has a not so hidden agenda. They want ncaa to emplode so they can strong hold college football. They already own the playoff and all it's tv rights. This is about throwing them under the bus so they can take over
@@malcolmn.5222Not really a rule but kids should have been allowed to make money off of their likeness decades ago

It was the OC/QB coach that offered the 100k. That is also one of the best play callers in the country.
This is the exact thing Saban tried to warn yall about. NIL is so great for players but the way it was rolled out with 0 rules and 0 operating procedures was about the dumbest thing they could’ve done. Now it’s all chaos, state wide lawsuits, and third parties making verbal promises and never following thru. This should have been figured out first and should’ve had structure in place before starting nil
Yup, the ncaa had a chance to get control of this. Instead they fought compensation until the Supreme Court shut them down. It’s their fault.
@RD-wg9em Exactly so sick of people being up in arms about this I didn't hear them complain when the schools were making millions of dollars and the players weren't making anything

Calling it ridiculous to work without being paid what you were told you’d be paid is in and of itself ridiculous. And to all those who say “he should have signed a contract”, you intentionally are ignoring the fact that UNLV told him they weren’t allowed to offer him a contract until enrolled. They ripped him off, so he is taking himself somewhere else. Good for him.
Welcome to the NFLs minor league folks.
These players shouldn't be getting paid to begin with. It's a privilege and honor to play college football, not a right. They've been given free room and board, tuition, and access to an education that they wouldn't have if not for their football abilities.

3-0 let's see how it shakes out....
Complete anarchy and I love it. Greene said it … the NCAA had ample opportunities to put a pay structure in place but greed was more important.
Legally, you don’t need a piece of paper to have a valid contract. If one party makes an offer and the other party accepts it, that is a valid contract under the law.
UNLV: “Hey, kid, we’ll give you $100,000 to come play for us.”
Player: “OK, you got a deal!”
That’s a valid contract every day of the week.
Of course, verbal contracts are harder to prove, especially when one party sleazes out of it like UNLV did. Shame on them.
But you have to be able to prove it right? Cause if not people could just lie all the time about it.
UFL might end up being his best chance for money
Have to have singed agreements fam, simple words don't matter
thats illegal derpaderp
Not true Oral contracts are legally binding you just need some type of proof you had a conversation and agreement on said deal.
@@masteroogway8453 right but the part you do not understand by the ncaa rules you can not trade monetary compensation, even NIL to recruit students. You are thinking like an ape and not understanding the rules at hand.
They can offer NIL but can not use it before the season to recruit students. Not in a contract anyway.
@@masteroogway8453 Here since I know you are lazy by the fact you didnt even bother to look this up. "Two things remain disallowed by NCAA rules: 1) you can't pay a player, and, 2) no quid pro quo. Sluka's agent was not even licensed when this was all going on. Sluka and agent at fault.
No written contract could be made until Sluka enrolled in the school. The deal took place while he was at Holy Cross last season
And he has paltry stats at best this year. Nothing lost. Next man up. 😅
Another solution to this “issue” is to put the agreement in writing so problems don’t occur. Also signed by both parties so no confusion. Duh
WHO in this case HAS the LUST for money
The kid should have been advised by someone to get a contract from the school.
Wonder who Paul Finebaum works for? Lol
What did people think was gonna happen? This is ridiculous. I don’t blame the kid for leaving to take the 100 grand. Ask yourself this question if you’re a married man if another company offered you a $100,000 signing bonus to leave and go work for them. What would your wife say if you told her I’m staying where I’m at because of loyalty and honor. That’s a lot of money for most people. Most average families, that would probably take about 17 years of saving like a madman to get that amount of money. That can literally change a families life. That’s a big chunk on a down payment for a house or that’s probably a decade knocked off your mortgage. The NCAA and their attorneys better figure out something pretty quick or this shits gonna implode
we know the name of the player and agent but not the assistant coach that lied. i wonder why?
Pros do this all the time. They don’t get a new contract or the money they want, they’ll sit out the season. He just better hope the backup doesn’t succeed.
UNLV athletics is mismanaged, they need to made a determination of who contributes more to winning football game the most. Then pay that person accordingly.
I would bet the 3-0 QB contributes more than many on the coaching staff. Pay the QB the 100K, and less to coaching staff
Problem solved !!!
If the coach said it and the University doesn't back the coach because they know nothing about it fire the coach for his stupidly and let the QB go on and do this thing. Its hard for me to believe the University didn't know or the athletic director and why did they gave him money for them first 3 games if they didn't know. Someone is lying and its not the QB
For the record, making demands doesn’t mean he demanded new money. He could have demanded the money he was owed (in his opinion at least).
There are too many armchair QBs in this comment section who think athletes shouldn't be paid and should just be grateful for the "opportunity" to work without any pay bc they apparently just exist for their entertainment.
People need to remember that this game is a full-time job. And then some.
Always. Know. Your. Value. If you spend your life believing the entitled folks that try to gaslight you into thinking that working for them is a gift or privilege, you will never make what you are worth. Good on Matthew Sluka for knowing what he is worth.
Good for Sluka. Who else is going to drop out before the deadline?
Yeah, a verbal over the phone isn't a really good done deal
Get it in writing-kids will learn that quickly. Problem solved.
We have to get out of this blame game, where's Skulka's paperwork ? Oh that's right it was a verbal agreement no contract, yet he walks on his teammates, his school, possibly his career.
There were no actual documents signed. Thats his lawyer's fault. This kid needs to grow up.
He’s in Vegas kid is trying to go all in on himself and gonna backfire .
I'm seeing every aspect of life as I ever knew it disappear.
Anyone would quit a job after being lied to about pay. That's why you have to get everything in writing.
Why are they taking the kids word for it? The agent has no record of this deal being made. That's an agents one job! Unlv is probably telling the truth. The kid extorted the school. Pay me more money or I walk. Smh
Hard to believe either side. Each side has a whole different story. Can’t just go all in on what the kid is saying. Wouldn’t be surprised he asked for more money just because they started out 3-0. They should know the current rules you can go back to get more money mid-season.
Players shouldn’t get paid directly from the schools! Then recruits will go to certain schools based on $ and make the situation all about $ and not building up a program. Then the moment they don’t get enough $ or guaranteed $ they leave showing they only care about $ and not the overall team. Players should only be allowed to make $ outside of the team with personal NIL deals so they can focus on building the program not money chasing
I agree with the decision, but this whole NIL needs serious changes..
It doesn’t need a change, if you don’t have the money to pay the player don’t lie and embarrass your program. It’s ridiculous that UNLV doesn’t have a 100k, makes no sense, that should be nothing for them. Where are their boosters??
@@mikejones9906the NCAA needs to set rules for players making money n that's not debatable

@@lnss8775 name image likeness is vague.
Basically it is for the social media age, but has no real direct tie to play on the field.
Everyone basically agrees that football /basketball are the major revenue generators at most schools... , but not every player even at the "big" schools will get endorsements ...
Just make it the minor leagues of the NFL [other pro sports] and be done with it.
These are truly young people making more than most will ever earn...and yes they give up alot, but millions for an 18yr old QB [or even 100k]??? Wild times
That root of money take was whack and disagreeable. If he went to a different place to get paid, he should have been paid. Or he would've stayed where he was to keep playing "for the love of football"
Okay, so what? The door swings both ways. He wasn't happy with his current situation and the doors opened for him to part ways and find exactly what it is he's looking for elsewhere. In years past players didn't have the option to transfer without rigorous boundaries. Players can come and go now just like coaches so in my book this is even.
I love how they try to say its the “wild Wild West” it’s not the Wild Wild West, it’s basic business and these analysts are trying to act like it’s chaotic when it’s very simple, the players have a price, if you can pay that price, he will play for you. How does that equate to it being the “Wild Wild West”
It's the wild west because the schools are not paying. They aren't allowed. So, all this has to be done by a third party, in conjunction with the school. There was a player with a million dollar deal that was only provided 20% of what he was promised because he failed to live up to their standards. Whose standards? On the field, in the class, say something "wrong" on social media? Does the school get say, or can the third party just stop paying?
There is no standard, and every school is on its own. Some are going to be ultra-sketchy, and some are going to do right by their players. But how are the players going to know? Whose keeping track. In most cases, neither side wants to make it a story. This broke because you can't hide a player leaving. But so far, schools have believed the players won't/can't leave.
I would hate to be the parent of an 18-year-old football or basketball star right now. You can no longer just "follow the rules," you have to play a complicated game with career con artists.
@teewhy6994 It’s pretty simple, you make the school sign a contract or your kid isn’t going to the school. When the contract is legally binding, the school or whatever “third party” is paying that money regardless. That’s what I’m saying, this is no Wild Wild West, the kids need to just make sure everything is signed but they’re kids so they’re obviously not well versed in law. Now thankfully, everyone will learn from this situation because it has become national news.
@@mikejones9906 Is the athlete still allowed to transfer even after they signed a contract? Cause you know they will make a case about that.
@@AbandonedMilk Yea but if they sue this kid it will essentially be a death sentence to their football program. You don’t want the reputation of not paying players and suing them, it’s not going to help you in recruiting.
I'm not letting espn get away with this , sounds like you have an agenda against the ncaa because the UNLV assistant coach lied to the player not the ncaa, the ncaa did not make the offer to the player. Very clever with your wording in your report
It's Vegas! Just like the casinos don't want to pay when you win big!
Except there is literally no record of the kid being promised anything. And now his Dad was saying it was and OC that made the promise. Not the University and not the Head Coach. If that is true, then why would you jump on the word of one dude that can't even make that decision, and no contract? But quite honestly, it sounds way more sketch on the side of the kid now that the Dad is talking. And it sounds a lot like Dad may be more involved in this mess than the kid.
I think it’s dumb for ppl to say they don’t blame Suka. So if your child quit school to go to another school because he got a verbal offer and never got any other kind of offer besides words literally made life decisions based off words but y’all don’t blame him 😂 don’t be these clowns it’s ok to want and hold the school accountable but don’t try to absolve the kid from doing something dumb af. Kids wake up don’t be doing dumb stuff like him
The kid didn’t quit school. He graduated from Holy Cross and was free to go anywhere. He forewent other opportunities to go to UNLV because of a promise not kept. Btw, contracts do not have to be in writing to be enforceable.
Let him quit, there’s 1,000 backup behind him
“Agent said…” sounds as though written contracts are in order.
Left one team for another due to greed. Maybe go to school, get a degree and get a job or as an alternative quit and go home.
The power is with the players. UNLV doesn't make a contract..ok see ya UNLV...good luck! Oh and wait until they say 'I ain't playing in the playoffs unless I get an extra hundred grand".

No signed contract or other documentation? Sorry Charlie - you never had a deal! Any good lawyer will tell you that. You ALWAYS get this in writing! How much does 4-5 years at a university cost? Meals included? Did it become free? There’s about several million people right now with huge debt looming over them that would probably see having their college expenses paid for as a form of payment.
