Tony lived right near here. RIP I met him at the Charlie Poole festival once. I think his grandson Donovan Scott is carrying on the family advanced-technique guitar tradition well.
Jeff, really wanted to thank you personally for these videos. I'm a 47 year old songwriter and musician. Fine myself stuck for years. I was in a different era and learned from rewinding the VHS over and over if you know what I mean?! And have difficulty learning from people on yt. But found your explanations and camera angle most helpful. It's always been hard for me because of the camera angle in videos and for some reason I'm seeing what I was missing. So great job! I'm already fumbling with your website and will soon buy your course. Just wanted to stop in and say thank you and hope to converse with you soon😁💪🏻
Glad to hear the videos have been helpful. And the cameras. I appreciate the feedback. I work hard on that and recently invested in a 3rd camera so keep a look out for even more angles soon!
Tony was from NC. In my mind he took what another NC native Doc Watson was already doing to another place. Doc was mostly a bluegrass/old time player but he could also swing like crazy. Tony took that approach and added to it to come up withis own unique style. To me, the best thing about this video is where he talks about "playing in the moment". Something all the greats do regardless of idiom or genre. There's a video or interview (forget which) where John Hartford talks about the same thing. Perhaps this is why Tony, Jerry, and David got along so well and played so beautifully together? Be Here Now and if you can't be here now, get there later ;) Nice job Jeff, thenks for putting ths out.
Great video. I do enjoy your videos. Can you give me your advice on the best way for a beginner ( one year) to learn. Unfortunately I don’t have the funds to take lessons at 65-70 an hour. Thank you!
I would recommend making sure you play as much as you can. When I used to teach lessons the number one thing holding people back was simply not practicing enough. So focus on whatever interests you the most to make sure you're as motivated as can be to keep picking up the guitar. After that I'd say getting down some fundamentals can be a big help. That really makes it easier to play regardless of what style you're into.

Great lesson, hoping this means there's a Tony Rice backing track on the way! Maybe another something from the Pizza Tapes 🤌🍕.

Wow. Both of you. Thanks for the lesson. I actually learned from this! New sub.
Glad it was helpful!

Tony was born in Virginia and raised in Los Angeles.
Great Lesson mate. Thanks
Loved the vid, love Tony Rice. Could have watched a two hour vid on this.
Really insightful video. Wouldn’t mind a Pizza Tapes-esque Man of Constant Sorrow backing track! Or Louis Collins

Isn't he a basket ball player?
