Great video, Hudson. You have made a compelling case for adding the Z50 for easy and fun travel photography with your vacation story. Also, further argument on Z50 vs. the Fc with quick and easy operation and controls that are similar to Z6 and Z7 vs. the nostalgic controls of the latter. Beautiful images of the landscape, sporting action and your lovely family!
Great video, very informative. I must say, I have not used the AF auto mode with any frequency, but after seeing this video, you have given me the confidence to begin using it a lot more. Thank you Hudson.
With your advice, after considering the Z fc, I got the Z 50 with the 16-50, then the 50-250. I even have the same EVF hood. I'm going to Europe this year and taking this kit. It is so light and versatile. I too, am impressed. Now you have talked me into switching from Dynamic Area to Auto Area AF. Thanks Hudson.
Me and my girlfriend went to the Sea of Cortez for spring break back 30 years ago when I was a young buck. Beautiful place.. I’m impressed with the shots of the pelicans for an entry level camera.
Such an amazing intro video of you and the family! It really is great to see you guys enjoying time with each other in these depressing time. Very inspiring. Keep up the great work and looking forward to the Z9 vids. I’ll be tuned in with my Z9 in hand! Cheers!
The 50-250mm is a great lens. Even paired with the Z7 it's so light and small to keep in the bag in case you come across some goats or whatever in the mountains.
Looks like an amazing trip and great shots/footage as always. Funny, I just received my DJI Air 2S as it's a combo Christmas/65th bday present to myself. Looking forward to learning and getting out with it. Great things come in small and light packages some times......
What a super video. Thank you for your wonderful expertise. I am going to use AF area mode and practice for my bird photography. Just received the 24-120mm for my Z7II. I love it. Happy New Year.

Hope you enjoyed your jolly, Hudson, it certainly looked good! I am a little surprised at your reaction to receiving a Z9. I would be delirious if I were in your position. I don't have the money to buy one, so I have to live the dream through other people, so come on man, get excited about it!
There's honestly a lot that really disappoints me. The AF, ProRes video and speed is great, but It's too big and heavy to pack to really remote places on multiday expeditions. Taking away nuanced bracketing... Why? And yet again, no detailed dof available? I'm simply being honest. The Z7ii will likely remain my choice for everything but sideline sports or vehicle accessed wildlife for right now and I'll sell this thing the instant there's a smaller alternative. I can't fake what I don't feel. That's not who I am.
@@HudsonHenryPhoto interesting. Many years ago I had a D2xs and got rid of it after a short while for no other reason than it was too big and heavy and made me self-conscious. I am impressed with the automatic object detection auto focus on the Z9. I think I could put up with the extra size for the benefits it gives. Just wish I had the money to buy it.
If Nikon is wise, they'll have shutterless Z50, 6 & 7 replacements with this AF layout, but without the 120fps, 8k and ProRes goodies as soon as the furor over this big body dies. This camera isn't for everyone, it's a proof of concept. The tech will have to bleed down as soon as they can possibly get it done. :) And don't worry, I'm really excited to take it back to Baja on a seriious shooting trip without the family in a week. I'll have 5 really good kitesurfers traveling with me and will be staying at a more remote cliff top house that tons birds fly by all day long. Perfect testing scenario. Maybe I'll show it more love after. :) It's funny I lusted after the D2x in my d200 days, but after a two week traverse of the Brooks range through ANWR, I was glad I had the lighter body I could afford at the time. :)
I've been really impressed with the Z50 and the face/eye detect for photographing my kid, especially when paired with an adapted 35 mm 1.8 DX. I'm really liking that combo and that lens is < $200! I also use the Z50 to shoot birds with an adapted 200-500 which, while I'm finding it to be a totally capable combo for bird photography, I'm looking forward to your 100-400 review. I'll be tempted to upgrade to a Z telephoto at some point. I saw in another comment you trekked the Brooks range in the ANWR! I would love to see your photos from that trip!
Hi Henry -love to hear what you think about the 24 - 120 f4, would be great to compare with the 24 - 70 f4 that´s my favourite lens. Is the new larger lense one as good as the shorter one? Cheers !
I would LOVE to have all the features of the Z9 (the sensor, AF system, sensor shield, EXPEED 7 processor or higher if they develop it) in something along the lines of a Z6/7 II and the Z9is a brick at 3 pounds! I switched to mirrorless (Z6 II) because I wanted a lighter camera since my left side is weak from a stroke and I really need to rely on my right hand to hold and operate the camera. That and the fact that I don't have $5500 to spend on a pro camera if I can get away with something like the Z6 II
Big daddy Z9 vs the nimble Z50. This is an interesting look at why the Z9 is a great camera, but not always the best camera, and the z50 has its place. I was a little disappointed about the dof preview. Hopefully they will fix bracketing in a firmware update. Looks like the family had a great break. Thanks for sharing and enjoy the z9
Still waiting for my NPS Z9 order to be delivered.... hopefully in the next week or so. Maybe the silver lining will be that by then you'll be releasing an in-depth settings guide and do the heavy lifting for me! ;-) I think a good option for the battery situation is to use a previous gen "c" version as the backup. Price notwithstanding, the new "d" version is going to be unobtainium for awhile, I think.
Wasabi's c version should work for even cheaper, but the real silver lining is that USB-C PD connectable charger. You can keep one cooking in the bag while using the other or charge 2 in the bag all via battery bricks. I misspoke in the video too. That Anker PD battery brick I linked is 20,000 milliamps. It's 6 of the Z9's batteries, not 3.
Great video! I can't tell you how refreshing it is when your recommendations are surprisingly affordable. You really seem to catch all the changes Nikon does that get/puzzle/baffle me too! ;) I started with a Z50, tried a Z5, a Z7, a Z6II, sold the Z50 and a lens to get a Z7II, and ended up buying the Z50 because I missed it. I use it with the 85-S (128mm) 24-70F4S, and 70-300E too. The firmware is a bit limiting as it can't be setup like a DSLR or even other Z's. You can't map a button directly to a sub-menu item (like spot metering,) but Nikon could easily fix that. Nikon should at least give the Z50 the Zfc features (1/3 crop, save settings, and Wide (L people)). It is due for a refresh Z50II, Z70, or Z500. I'd have no interest in a Z30. Happy shooting everyone!
Great video. I am learning the autofocus system for my Z fc, so this was a big help for me. I was surprised with your take on the size and weight of the Z9. It is a mirrorless iteration of the D6 after all.
Thanks so much. I just don't think that the Z9 form factor is future oriented... Your comment highlights that. I think that Nikon has hit it out of the park with lenses like the 500PF and the epic performance of it's smaller lighter Z mount lenses. Those are future focused. I understand that the big fast glass has to be big to cover full frame from a physics perspective, but bodies can be made smaller with all the same tech. Look at Sony's A1. I think this was designed to appeal to the D6 crowd, but I don't think that crowd is growing to include many younger photographers. In the past I always chose the highest tech compact body for my work, since it often leads me far off the beaten path with my gear on my back (F100, D200, 700, 300, 750, 800, 810, 500, 850, previous Zs). I look forward to the Z9's AF, and video tech moving to a Z8 or some such. Till then I'm sadly forced to keep my Z7ii and the Z9. I had planned to sell it, but i can't take this huge thing on big adventures. I knew it would be bigger and heavier, but it's A LOT bigger and heavier than I had hoped.
@@HudsonHenryPhoto All good points, except keep in mind that Nikon needs these old school photographers to stay in their ecosystem (while hoping to switch them to mirrorless) and many of them love the vertical grip to help stabilize big glass. Different tools for different uses. For a mobile photographer like yourself, the size and handling is definitely a negative. To someone shooting a football game with big glass and a monopod, it's size is a godsend. No doubt it's a low-volume, highly specialized camera, so your point about the tech trickling down into smaller models is 100% on point. Gotta entice the current pros to switch first!

Hi! I like the honest and critical approach you have in your videos. Somewhat disappointing to hear that DOF preview is still limited with Z9 even though I wasn't personally in a market for this camera.
