    Hudson looks like a great set-up, if you are checking luggage for clothing and everything else not shown you will need for a trip. I have put over 100K on planes for the last 15 years and have learned to try to pack as light as possible. That being said, I will never check luggage (fortunate to have the status on American to be able to carry-on), even internationally having luggage not making it to my expensive destinations on time due to bad weather, connections, plane maintenance etc...Murphy's law, it will happen if you travel enough. I have designed my kit to fit in Shimoda's new Explore V2 E25, which fits Z7 and all of the new trinity 2.8s, drone, laptop and accessories, more than enough to cover a trip (fits under the seat, along with a Tumi international carry-on which I can bring my clothing and tripod, I have also found that I often bring more than what I use. If you are staying for more than 5 days, you can always get your clothes laundered on the road. The beauty of the Shimoda pack is that it is designed to slip over the carry-on handle so that you can wheel the entire assembly (nothing on your back, except maybe your kids pack) through an airport when you have to make connections. The other advantage to traveling light is to not have to wait for luggage (30 years of business travel experience) once you land or to have to wheel more than one rolling suitcase. In some cases as with yours, my approach would be impossible if you are carting other sports equipment (kite surfing, wet suits, etc). Thanks for sharing your strategy, it's always interesting to see how people lug their stuff to travel.

      Hey David, I see we have opposite travel tendencies, except clothes. I took 2 pairs of board shorts, 2 tank tops and a sun shirt. Nothing that can't wash in a sink and dry in 10 minutes. That said, I checked well over 100 pounds of kite and photo gear just for myself. 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12 meter kites, bar, wetsuit, harness, board, helmet & hydrofoil. The tripod and some extra photo/video gear is not even noticeable slipped in on the side. I'm typically either mountaineering, kitesurfing, backcountry skiing or mountain biking as well as bringing photo gear on my trips. When I bring the wife and kids, the gear gets even more crazy. Our vehicle is a big sprinter for road trips and my airline luggage consists of nearly a dozen wheeled oversize duffels along with the carry-on gear I show here. :-) On trips to every continent except Antarctica over the past 35 years of adventure travel, I have yet to lose a bag or have anything tampered with. Knock on wood.
      As an aside, I can't imagine living with a tripod that fits in a carry-on bag, but thankfully I haven't needed to. Shimoda has several disadvantages that I just can't get over. The minimal shoulder strap adjustment attachments, the vest-like shoulder harness and the loose unpadded internals just turn me off. They are my third favorite bags though behind NYA-EVO and F-stop. :-)

      @@HudsonHenryPhoto Thanks for your reply Hudson. I tend to push towards the "Accidental Tourist" position on packing, if you have seen that movie (less is more), and try to avoid the airline mishaps based on years of experience."Up in the Air" is another reference, and sadly a reference to my years in the air. In regards to Shimoda, I have never had a more comfortable fit for hiking with any kind of pack, period! This is coming using everything from Duluth packs in the BWCA in my early days (70s) to the the most technical packs on the market of today. I think they have designed a beautiful system for photographers who want the technology of frame pack research. Their split belt hip belt IMHO, is second to none and their newer products just keep on getting better. I pack a RRS 3 series with a detached ball head in my international carry on and works like a charm. That being said, my trips are exclusive for photography, so I am not bringing the other gear that you mention. Love your channel, BTW, and love your authenticity and passion towards sport and photography.

    The NYA-EVO 36 backpack has measurements that are bigger than what United and American allow for their carryons for under the seat. Where you still able to carry these on? If not real full, does it squeeze down enough? I see they have a 26 but it would not take my laptop which is a 15 inch. Thanks for your advice.

      On bigger trips, it's packed with clothes alongside my tripod in the checked rolling duffle while my gear rides in a pelican case in the overhead. :)

    As a Nikon DSLR shooter I'm still closer to buying a Sony camera for my next camera.
    Im hoping the AF in the Z9 finds its way to a mid market Nikon soon. I also hope they include 10 bit internal plus active stabalisation and gyro stabalisation like the new sonys have - oh and video backup.

      Here's how I would do that. A TSA lock on one side and a thick zip tie on the other. Leave a note and a 2nd zip tie inside for TSA telling them how precious this gear is to you and how much you appreciate them replacing the zip tie they cut. :) I would not hesitate at all about gear getting damaged checked in it, just stolen or lost.

      on your back with the waist strap removed (via velcro quite easily) the 36C qualifies as a personal item that fits under the seat in front of you. The rolling case is your one bag that fits the overhead. Hoever, more often I check my larger 60C NYA-EVO in a rolling duffle with my tripod and clothes and carry a smaller bookbag with my laptop as I roll the Pelican on. On trips where I'm super space limited I ditch the Pelican and simply carry the 60C on as my carry on bag with a laptop bag with computer, kindle, snacks and headphones to put under the seat.

    my earlier comment was deleted. I shared a link to my website where I added a page showing some images of my Peli air 1535 to show what you can get in it.
    Anyway. I love that case! in it I have 3 lenses standing upright (z24-200,24-70/4 and z14-24) plus 2 laying down (z MC105and z70-200. Surprisingly the lens hoods take a lot of room. I also have 2 Kase magnetic filter kits - and without these you'd get another body or small lens. The height is about 6.5-7" allowing for the lid- and I have the lid organiser.

    Great video Hudson! I have bought the new version of this bag. It is an amazing bag however I am a little dissapointed by the weight of this bag. Mine seems to weigh about 2400 grams (just the bag, so excluding rain cover, net and ICU). However the nya-evo website states 1900 grams for this bag. That is quite some difference and 2400g is quite heavy. Am I missing something or....? What is the weight of yours? I hope you want to share! :)

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  2 года назад

      Ultralight bags have a tough time with heavy loads. I have an ultralight ski touring bag from Patagonia and I don't reach for it when I haul camera gear too. I think the Nya Evo is extremely well rounded. If it were lighter, then it would likely not carry as well when loaded. The waist harness, aluminum braces and compression straps are removable if you feel the need to lighten it more. ;-)

    • @fransvanderboom
      @fransvanderboom 2 года назад

      @@HudsonHenryPhoto I agree. They changed the weight on their website after I contacted them about this. 1900 g was the weight of the pre-production model apparently. They made some improvements that added to the final weight.

    You limited your audience with the Z9, and so did Nikon. Add the 400mm f/2.8 to the mix, and photography will leave 99 % of photographers in the dust. The mirrorless craze is just too expensive for the average photographer, amateur or professional. That said, I love the Pelican case and the camera bag.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  2 года назад +4

      I merely teach and talk about what excites me as a photographer and I am further driven by the emails and comments from my friends who watch this channel and travel the world on workshops with me. The Z9 represents the future that Nikon is driving toward, therefore it is exciting to me. I'm exploring it and sharing that experience. Very few of the photographers I work with remain in the DSLR world and the last holdouts are shifting with the latest crop of mirrorless cameras from all the brands. They are just better machines than the DSLRs that led to them. It's not just the mirrorless advantages in shooting experience (autofocusing planets on moonless nights, watching a sunstar bloom in the EVF, zooming in to the landscape scene in the EVF to check focus, working the menus and image review without needing glasses via the diopter, etc...), it's also the optical advantages. The shorter flange distance and wider mount openings make the optics mind-bendingly better than the glass I used and loved for decades prior. There's just so much to be excited about in the Z9 that will bleed down from an autofocus acquisition, tracking and speed experience. It's not all good, but it's a fascinating move to not just mirrorless, but shutterless. Exciting is the key word.

    You come up with some great gear advice that I have gotten from you and I thank you!
    I ordered this nya- eco 60c after seeing how much you liked, I just thought people need to here the Altman’s experience with this pack, I got it and loved it but noticed it had a malfunctioned zipper and found the harness to be different then yours, the load lifters were only 3 inches apart and pinched my neck, upon contacting them they said they have never had anyone mention that as a problem but then said they coincidentally have a new pack out that has wider load lifters and that they are still clearing out old inventory, so my pack is on return to them i had to pay shipping and am hoping they refund me, so if you are to order this pack there is a good chance you will get the old style which is absolutely inadequate, this was going to be a once in a lifetime pack it costs a lot of money Which I am waiting for , so I ordered the the New diamond F-stop during this issue and love it! I am sure if you request the new style of the NYA they will send it to you upon request there quite a few changes made, cheers and thanks again

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  2 года назад

      Hey Morgan, I appreciate your comment and I'm sorry you had that experience. Why don't you shoot me an email and cc the NYA-EVO guys? They are fabulous to work with and I'm sure they will make the issue right for you. I personally find thier bags more comfortable and innovative than the competition. I love F-stop too, having been an ambassador for years until discovering NYA-EVO. I just love everything they currently sell, and I certainly don't feel any pinch from the harness on even the smallest bag they make. Could you send me a pic of the bag in question? I'm hoping you took one before returning it. Again, I'm bummed you had that experience. It's the first negative comment I've fielded after a sea of glowing reviews in my email from viewers who've purchased and loved them. Keep me in the loop via email and I'll do all I can to ensure they make it right. Jensen is so nice that I can't imagine I need to do much on that front though.
