    The real question is: "Does your body make new fat cells when you gain weight?" If it does then every time you lose then gain back a significant amount of weight you have more fat cells and your body becomes more and more effecient at storing fat, making losing weight harder the next time.

    After the adipocytes are depleted, it takes about two years for the excess adipocytes to be broken down. The adipocytes that the body needs will not go away, but the excess cells will.

    The thing I'd heard but never bothered to confirm is that adipose cells will divide as they grow, because of optimal cell-size issues, but then when they shrink they don't die out, and that supposedly this is part of the reason why it is harder to keep weight off once gained. I wish this video explored this concept.

    Hey random internet people, if you have trouble losing weight, trying eating ≤ 10% of your calories from carbs, ~70% from fat, and ~20% protein. Fat doesn't make you fat; saturated fat nor cholesterol clog arteries; carbs cause immense oxidative stress (look into glycation) and will lead to excess fat storage.
    The power of independent research! Scientific/nutritional norms take decades to change, but you can change your health whenever you want.

    • @Shloopy420

      To say low carb diets are a fad, is to ignore the fact that human beings, genetically identical to ourselves, ate incredibly low carb/high fat diets for *literally* millions of years. Carb sources were in-season fruit (infrequent), and honey (which is guarded by bees and also an infrequent carb source). Wild berries, veggies, roots also contain carbohydrates.
      Why would you assume I'm not an academic? I'm just not subscribed to the mainstream nutritional dogmas. My views have changed because of quality science. Here's a study outlining carbohydrate oxidative stress. drperlmutter.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/2-AGE-BRAIN.pdf
      It's much easier to lose weight via caloric deficits and exercise, when you're on a low carb diet, therefore in fat burning mode. See ketosis: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23801097 (This also outlines other benefits of a low carb diet). It's unknown if humans evolved in a state of ketosis, but it's known to be part of healthy metabolism.
      I'm going to assume you're an academic, and I'll ignore your random accusation that I haven't studied this. Err on the side of caution when accusing someone of not doing research. I know this is RUclips, but it's also SciShow. Here's a fun case study just to get you thinking about alternate approaches to health.

    Well, they go away in liposuction. what effect does liposuction have on your body?

    • @Validator56
      @Validator56 7 лет назад +31

      The unintended consequence of liposuction is that your fat elsewhere inflates faster when you put on weight. So if you hypothetically removed all the fat from your belly, but didn't make any changes to your energy intake/expenditure, then you would find your back, arms, face, legs and rump putting on weight even quicker than before.

    • @gafeht
      @gafeht 7 лет назад

      Any quicker than had you not grown the extra fat cells on your belly in the first place?

    • @Validator56

      Same speed, basically each adipose cell is like a member of a pirate crew, each getting a cut of the spoils. The fewer pirates there are in the crew, the bigger cut each remaining pirate gets.
      If you eat enough to put on 1lb of fat then you put on 1lb of fat all other things being equal. The choice is putting it on evenly across your whole body, or evenly across everywhere except your belly.

      Something that wasn't really touched on in the video is how we can increase not only the size but also the number of fat cells. If you consume excessive energy your fats cells will get bigger, but they can only do this to a point. After which, your body need to create more cells. If you lose weight (fat) the fat cells will shrink in size, but they will (generally) not reduce in number. So now they have even more cells 'wanting' to gain fat.

    • @Laff700
      @Laff700 7 лет назад

      Well it's true that your body wouldn't need to expend anymore energy creating new fat cells. Also, if you've recently lost weight, you may have leptin resistance which would temporarily slightly lower your metabolism.

    • @Laff700
      @Laff700 7 лет назад

      TurboCMinusMinus Certain factors affect metabolism. Being tall and a male increases your metabolism. Genetics can affect it too. Aside from that, weight gain happens when you consume more calories than you need to maintain your weight. It doesn't matter much if the calories come from junk food or more nutritious food. Perhaps those people you speak of have high metabolisms, don't actually consume that many calories, or just don't eat like you think they do.

      Okay, does this part mean that fat cells can be created but not destroyed? Or is there a reverse process -- if there's too little fat, nearly empty cells may be destroyed, consumed, transformed.
      If fat cells can be created by not destroyed, that might make dieting a devil of a job, especially if there's a drive to fill the fat cells.

    • @Laff700
      @Laff700 7 лет назад +2

      John Randomness Well, fat cells get created and die all the time. These rates are usually equal though. If you gain more fat cells then the create rate will rise above the die rate for a while and they'll then equalize again. It's hypothetically possible to hinder fat cell creation and decrease the total number of fat cells. I don't think that has been figured out yet though.

      They left out that fat cells can also increase in number once they're filled to capacity (capacity is pretty high though). That's part of why people who lose a lot of weight often gain it back. Once the number increases, the person then has more fat cells sending signals saying that they're too empty if the person loses significant weight.

      I guessed that much. I meant it more as a meme. Thanks for confirming my theory.
      Speaking of diet: I've heard that you can eat in 15min as many calories as you would burn by running 24h straight. Which is a pretty depressing thought. On the other hand, your muscles burn energy, no matter if you need their full potential or not. (I guess the latter is oversimplified). Thus building up muscles allows losing weight faster than doing cardio all the time (which would reduce muscle mass over time).
      BTW: there are apparently various types of fat cells too. Some seem adapted at keeping us/animals warm in cold climates and others are more for energy storage as needed for hunter-gatherers.

    • @nerowski
      @nerowski 7 лет назад +3

      edi
      Ah. Makes sense :)
      I think that being able to eat enough in 15 minutes to outweigh 24 hours of running is incorrect, but I could be mistaken. The body typically can absorb only so many calories at a time, and running for that long can burn a huge amount of calories. It might be possible though, especially if those 15 minutes are spread out over a longer time period haha
      You're right about muscle being very important to weight loss, but the part on cardio might be a bit off. I think you have it right in your head, but it's hard for me to tell for sure from the comment. Cardio is much more effective/quick for losing weight (and builds muscles too), but weightlifting-type exercise often helps more for keeping fat off once it's lost. Like you said, aside from the energy required to repair muscle after a workout and to build new muscle, the body constantly uses a good amount of energy to maintain muscle mass. This adds to resting metabolism which can be extremely important for preventing additional fat gain and for keeping fat off once lost. I personally have had much more weight loss success with building muscle than I did with dieting, but both done well are very useful, and there may be a genetic component that makes either more useful for different people. Unfortunately, it can be hard to convince people to lose weight through exercising (especially weightlifting) since the weight of the additional muscle sometimes prevents the number on the scale from changing much.
      The fat that helps generate heat is called brown fat. Its color is different because it has more mitochondria than other fat does. While mitochondria are normally rather efficient, the mitochondria in brown fat purposefully operate inefficiently so that more energy is converted to heat instead of things like movement.
      Thanks for your comment. I enjoyed going into more detail.

    • @edi9892
      @edi9892 7 лет назад +1

      Stephen Niewiarowski
      If I'm not mistaken, a pound of butter contains more energy, than a pound of TNT. However, butter can only burn slowly, unless you boil it and dump a glass of water in it (in that case the explosion is strong enough to severely damage a small house, but still nowhere near a pound of TNT).
      So I guess eating butter or ice might do the trick. Eating the same amount of sugar will probably kill you.
      BTW: Humans seem to have evolved to run or wander huge distances to gather food (unlike the beasts that could outrun us with ease and have thus more calories to burn). There was really a guy recorded running 24h straight, but that's something most of us couch-potatoes and pc-heros can only dream about (in our nightmares).

    Hey scishow, I've got a question, why are we cold when we step out of the water?

    • @feynstein1004
      @feynstein1004 7 лет назад +1

      That's quite easy. When you're in water, you don't lose heat that quickly. But when you step out, you've got lots of little drops of water on your body which evaporate quickly and take heat away from your body rapidly. Hence you feel cold.

    As someone who is very skinny and close to being _under_weight, would eating a lot create new fat cells? Because, even when I did start to eat more, I never noticed any real change in size.

    • @lmlopez6155
      @lmlopez6155 7 лет назад +1

      angeldude101 yeah. find a calorie counter and find out how many calories you need to eat daily to maintain your weight, then eat around 200-250 calories more than that until you hit a desired weight/look. eat more to gain faster.
      when you hit that weight find your new maintainence and eat that. weight loss works the same way.
      the catch is you have to count absolutely everything you eat and drink in a certain time period (Cal's/day maybe)

    I seem to recall fat cells do have a lifespan (about 7 years?). I don't know to what extent new ones are produced under what level of stimuli, but I think it's quite possible that you can effectively grow or shrink the number of actual fat cells over time through long-term diet.
    I don't know if, in a low-fat circumstance, fat cells might be re-metabolized - it might be possible, given that cells with no utility are just a net drain on the system so recycling might be beneficial.
    Of course, you could always take various measures to actually physically destroy the cells (surgeries and so forth) if all else fails...

      Early humans needed lots of energy to hunt down animals which they eat afterwards. Thus early humans needed high fat and energy foods, thus early humans developed taste receptors to like high fat food. Today people consume high fat food but don't do enough exercise to balance the energy outcome out not like what early humans did.
      However, humans soon will develop a taste for nutritional food like salads etc. in future. Why? because evolution

    • @Sophiaroxursox331
      @Sophiaroxursox331 7 лет назад

      MJD7 Gaming not exactly. Never in the history of human evolution have we ever had such processed foods to choose from. Processed foods are designed to keep you wanting more, buying more, and be kind of an explosion on taste. You brain gets more pleasure from overly salty/sugary/fatty foods because they're not as prevalent in such high concentrations in nature and they are very important for your body's health in the right amounts. Fruit has natural sugars that can be used for instant energy. Fats, like those in nuts, seeds, and animal products are denser in calories and harder to access, but would keep you satisfied for longer and it was easier to over eat them and store fat, for a time of famine, so your body could tap into those fat stores for energy and not die. As for sodium, it is present amongst other crucial minerals for health in natural foods like leafy greens and sodium is important for electrolyte regulation. The good news is your body is very adapogenic, it gets used to the norm. So once you change your lifestyle and stop eating processed junk food or out at restaurants and start eating good quality whole, plant based, foods you taste buds change and start to prefer the healthier foods. Also, it will change your gut bacteria because plant foods are rich in prebiotics. Which the good bacteria feed off of and multiply, changing your microbiome, which in turn changes your cravings. Then, before you know it you'll be craving broccoli!

And if that is the case, how does the body know when it has enough fat cells?

      well training a lot adds metabolism speed, being 80kg 10% bodyfat having more muscle mass raises basal metabolic rate, also eating every 2.5-3 hours increases speed of metabolism because your body is constantly working to break down food with no rest gaps.
      edit: also body type affects metabolism by 30% ecto - meso - endo, im ectomorph. cafeine can help temporarily for around 15% metabolism rate

    Just be mindful that there's more to weight loss than just doing cardio. I'm training for an Ironman later this year and as my workouts get longer, my belly gets fatter. My weight gain isn't just trading fat for muscle, I'm definitely packing on belly fat despite doing 3 or 4 or 5 hours of exercise a day. I didn't gain weight for the first few months of my training, but then training sessions were typically only 1 to 2 hours. It's only after I moved up to these much longer sessions that the weight gain kicked in. Obviously yes, I eat an awful lot now to recover from so many hours of exercise, but there's also the matter of elevated cortisol levels that can really pack on pounds quickly. I'm sure there are plenty of other factors involved.
    So unless you have a specific goal, like an Ironman, don't just assume more exercise is always better. There is a point of not just diminishing returns, but of actual reversal leading back to weight gain. Some exercise is great, too much is not...

I don't think that people realize that it doesn't matter how much you work out, you will still have some fat cells and that is a good thing. How does this work with liposuction? I'd assume that, because it removes the cells altogether, it would affect how difficult it is too gain and lose weight. Because there are fewer cells available do they grow faster to compensate for the excess of nutrients moving around the body that the other fat cells are no longer taking up, or do your kidneys filter it out of your system before the fat cells you have left can take it up? Anyone know?

    I thought fat is a molecule, so it's a cell?
    I thought cells grows by multiplying, not increasing in size. And let's say an obese person works out and gets back in shape, what happens to the fat cells?
    Why do people who want/ in a weight loss diet are suggested to eat low calorie food? I thought calorie is a form of energy, not fat.
