Tuomas had said that the song would have more of an 80's feel, with lyrics that may be controversial. In a recent short he said that the song is about fear mongering, and controlling people with fear. He also talked about how many times we have been told that the would end, but we are still here. It is a children's choir, they have regularly partnered with one, though they are much more prominent here than in past songs. Yep, good idea to have a dictionary handy when reading Nightwish lyrics. LOL. "Lanternlight' will be the 3rd single, music video releasing on Sep 20, along with the album.
Floor plays the role of a fearmonger and the children are the voices of hope. In the last 2 choruses Floor joins the children because she realized 'the end is fear'
Thanks for sharing your insightful reaction to a song that gets better & better with each listen, which is something that defines greatness in songwriting. The composer, Tuomas Holopainen, has said that this song is his take against all the fear mongering that plaugues main stream media these days. It's a form of mind control to keep the masses of ordinary people in line with official narratives of the ruling class.
Hi Rachel, greetings from UK Welcome back to Nightwish, I always love your reactions 🥰 The end of the Mayan calendar and other doomsday prophesies, scaremongering to keep control over people is pretty much what the song is about
There seems to be a mix of ways we imagined life or society as we know it would end (Y2K, Brave New World, 1984, War of the Worlds, etc,) and then a bunch of how life really has ended for a lot of people and societies throughout history. I'm not sure how best to interpret that mix of things, but it does make me think. Things ended, but we carried on, but we also all inevitably end. Something like that, maybe. Then there's the people turned to stone, which could be about letting fear make us calloused and hard. Or it could be about freezing in place and plopping down in front of our screens because it feels like we can't fight the end of things. But then we do carry on after things end, even if we're stony and frozen and it's agony to do so, until we end and others carry on after us. Definitely a headscratcher of a song.
Another great reaction! I have watched this video numerous times and every time I discover something new. The storytelling in the lyrics and the video is profound and it has taken me several listens and doing a deep dive into the lyrics to understand what Tuomas was going for. In another reaction the reactor mentioned that the beginning reminds them of the scene in Clockwork Orange where Malcom McDowell character is forced to watch violence over and over. The blue lighting is also reminiscent of that scene from the movie. I think here the director is using a similar direction to illustrate how we are all forced to watch "never ending doom porn" to create fear and misery in culture. Originally I thought this was Tuomas's warning to us of humanities proclivity to freakout over the next disaster that people are pushing (so many references to apocalyptic predictions in the lyrics) but recently I picked up on the fact that in the chorus the children are saying that their is hope for the feature, no need to let fear and misery control us. One of my favorite parts that I only recently picked up on in the video is in the scene with the Mayan's on their knee's before a solar eclipse which happens at the start of the second chorus. The adults are on their knee's, fearing the end of time as predicted by the Mayan calender, while a child is protectively hunched over a recently planted seedling representing hope for a better future. Also the red rose at the end being held by a child is also a symbol of hope as well. One of my favorite lines is "A new strain sent you back into your cave. Obey, stay away, cover up" (reference to Covid?). But my absolute favorite is "A need to feel dread, gloom, awe. A lust for never-ending doom porn". Never ending doom porn has to be one of the best turn of phrases I have ever heard. It is such a poetic way to describe how people are fascinated with the bad and evil and give short shrift to the positive and uplifting.
Basically, it says that there are always people saying it's going to be the end of everything - but we live through it. We lived through Y2K, various wars, viruses, predictions of the end of the world from several ancient civilizations, and overall we survive - that we can take comfort from that. Tuomas describes this as an uplifting song.
A bit of a new way to go for Nightwish, with the children choir being this much present,, Floor is doing some fast phrasing here to, something like she does in the song Shoemaker, kind off i think.but at same time still very Nightwish sounding,. This song is about leaders, who spread fear in people, religious, political all kind of leaders, they tell that if you dont do it like this, the end is near, and it all bad, but its a lie, the due date have passed many times in history already for these doomsday predictions, so life your life, dont let yourself fill up with fear.. Notice that Floor joins the kids choir at end and connect that to her charecter she is in video, she realize something during video, Toumas said so in a interview i watched.. I didnt read the book 1984 written by George Orwell, but the song got reference to that book i belive. At first listen i needed another listen, at 3th listen the song got me, and i started like the children choir, i actually think its a pretty good song, and something not heard like this from NW before, now i listened to the song many times! I do think Tuomas once again prove he is a master composer, who make lyrics to make you think, and make melodies fitting the theme of the song. This is not a Empuu shine song, there is heavy guitar rhytm in the middle section and end, but not the big Empuu solo, but i also think this song dosent need it, because the Children choir takes spotlight instead,.. The title the day off.. is missing telling what its the day off, so i think this is where you can put in the optimistic view of the song, as a listener, if you like to, and hear the song that way, the listener decide what its the day off. The original idea was this one to be 1st single, because it was a diffrent sound from NW people told Tuomas, this have to be a single, but then Tuomas decided it should be Perfume of the timelees, and this 2nd. I belive a 3th single will be out before album release, being last track on upcoming album, called Lanternlight.
Great reaction as always. There is surely a lot happening in this video. I think the song itself is like a hybrid of new and old style of Nightwish with an 80's vibes.
You said it’s about events that took place. It’s more about the events that “didn’t” take place but were pushed through the media and politics. You’ll notice the reference to “1984” by George Orwell. It’s about control.
Idk why but the chanting part with those children is kind of alike attack on Titan opening theme I'd not remember which one season was right of hand now.
As always, very great and detailed reaction. Rachel You are so wonderful. I am crying cause You have such a beautiful soul, my soul always wanted to partner with. Wishing You the best from Hungary, Peter
I am sorry but Nightwish used to create original and beautiful music but this immediately reminds me of better versions of the same musical idea from previous albums and that is never a good sign. Also, Floor sounds as if she is having to squeeze lyrics into the music as best she can rather than them flowing with it. Yes she can sing complex lyrics melodically but where are the soaring sustained and emotionally charged simple phrases? Why so many words?
The lyrics are Tuomas way of telling about his experiences, the world and the universe. etc. The entire publication is a work, a painting, a story.. . I listened several times and specifically the words, the story. Tuomas also told in the text the year 84. This year blew my mind.. This must be a reference to George Orwell's book. 1984. The book takes place in a dystopia, a country called OSEANIAN. ... I have read the book several times. I got the feeling that Tuomas has read the same book many times. .. We are now living in a similar time.. 1984. IN OSEAN. Of course this is just my opinion.

This was so good. Not only reaction, but also a review and a reflection of what you heard and saw.
Great Nightwish
Hi Rachel, greetings from UK
Welcome back to Nightwish, I always love your reactions 🥰

The government has absolute control over the people, which must absorb all the propaganda. So no blinking and bring on the eyedrops. 😄🤘
New Nightwish song - An Ocean of Strange Islands dropped today, Sept 10

Ray! I thought the childrens choir had Pink Floyd's "The Wall" vibes.
Please, React to Your Favourite Martian - Alien.
It's a very powerful song from the singer's childhood

Haha, The End Of The World is postponed, again. 😅👍

Idk why but the chanting part with those children is kind of alike attack on Titan opening theme I'd not remember which one season was right of hand now.
It reminded me of the kids choir in the Pink Floyd song "Another Brick In The Wall"
