I watched Sigur Rós put an audience into the throes of rapture at Coachella 2001, their first North American performance. None of us knew who they were, but when they’d finished, thousands of us were left stunned, speechless, weeping, at peace. I’ve never seen anything like it. These are not songs, they’re spells.

"These are not songs, they're spells". I think that sums up Sigur Ros perfectly. We saw them in Sydney in - I think - 2006. It was perhaps the mightiest concert experience of our lives, and we've seen plenty of seminal concerts over the years!, The "Heima" concert DVD is a wonderful memento of this special band (and the best ever travelogue any country could ever hope for!) We have literally just discovered this breathtaking film clip. It sums up the enigma, the landscape and the soundscape that Sigur Ros so perfectly capture. We thus have music and images that will see us through all our years to come.

They played in Sydney at the Enmore Theatre in 2006. I took my partner and sister who hadn't heard them before. They stood dazed, speechless, and walked away elated. It was transformative for each of us. So easy to see why they were an inspiration to Radiohead. While other memories fade, the impact of that event is still crystal clear 14 years on.

We cry because we all know this freedom yet we are so sold on the current "reality". We all know things are not as they should be. This video reminds us of our real past and, if you look, our future. There is a way to find this, but you have to be sincere, you have to disagree and trust your own reality. Look.

    lyrics in English
    Glowing Sun (Bright Sun)
    Now that you’re awake
    Everything seems different
    I look around
    But there’s nothing at all
    Put on my shoes,
    I then find that
She is still in her pyjamas
    Then found in a dream
    I’m hung by (an) anticlimax
    She is with the sun
    And it’s out here
    But where are you…
    Go on a journey
    And roam the streets
    Can’t see the way out
    And so use the stars
    She sits for eternity
    And then climbs out
    She’s the glowing sun
So come out I awake from a nightmare
    My heart is beating
    Out of control…
I’ve become so used to this craziness
    That it’s now compulsory
    And here you are…
    I’m feeling…
And here you are, Glowing sun…
And here you are, Glowing sun…
And here you are, Glowing sun…
    And here you are…

If anyone has the time to read, this is what the song means to me :)
When i heard this first (2015 Byron bay) was a time I was where I was very unsure of myself, my future and what my purpose was (like any insecure 19 year old lol). It was a time where I had just decided to quit university for the first time after 2 years of studying, I felt like I had hit a dead end and was anxious about what my purpose or goals were (felt I had been lying to myself) and quitting was a big decision as I wasnt sure whether dropping everything was a good idea.
Hearing this song for the first time left me with a sense of longing for something and that that something felt so close yet for a while I had felt it was out of reach. Upon more listens and reading the lyrics I realised that something was, was a longing for peace at heart about existing in such an uncertain world.
This song reminded me that feeling lost was okay and gave me comfort in that it was okay to be unsure of who I was. To me the glowing sun is "comfort" and that it is always never far away. It is something that we dream of but a lack of it is also a cause for our nightmares.
The song reminds me that comfort is like the light that touches everything we know around us from the glowing sun, sometimes we have to wake up from our dreams and find comfort in the warmth of the glowing sun or those (people and connections) that share the world around us.
Glosoli translates to a childish way of saying glowing sun and this is a reminder that even though i am getting older, these childish little fears will always be with me. Although sometimes we can feel overwhelmed and unsure of things in the present, sometimes it helps knowing that not knowing, is okay and we can find comfort in the 'glosoli' around us.
3 years on I have taken a year off to travel and now am in my second year of a new university course which I am much much happier with. Glosoli continues to be my anthem through tough times and is a continual reminder that sometimrs life is a journey through uncertainty but if its shared with those around us, we can find comfort in it.
    What is your glosoli?
Thankyou for your music and talent Sigur Ros!

music is a right-brained activity, language a left-brained activity. therefor, not knowing what is being said actually increases its artistic strength. it leaves you to fill in the blanks; your unconscious just loves doing that, you know

Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around - nobody big, I mean - except me. And I'm standing one the ede of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over cliff - I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I'd do all day. I'd just be a catcher in the rye and all. I know it's crazy, but that's the only thing I'd really like to be. I know it's crazy." - The Catcher in the Rye

Without a shadow of a doubt, the most beautiful music video ever made. I have yet to be able to sit through it once without sobbing like a child. It makes me feel things I cant quite put into words. It has something to do with a certain unspoken magic that only exists when your young. Somewhere along the way we lose it but things like this bring it all rushing back. It's heartbreaking and beautiful. Thank you, Sigur Ros and whoever directed that masterpiece. As Oscar Wilde would say- People have gone to heaven for far less.

That was an amazing video. One of the most clear depictions of childhood innocence I've seen in a long time. So refreshing to not see the idiocy that would delete the kissing as if children have no such curiosity or seeing it as sullying their innocence to have such desires, or delete the boys torching the car as if destruction cannot be innocent as well... and then at the end having them fly instead of fall is so brilliant. I hope I'm not reading too much into it, but it seemed very deep and diametrically opposed to the view most people have today of childhood being composed of nothing but ignorance, incompetence, and self-destructive motivations.

    • @DustinRodriguez1_0
      @DustinRodriguez1_0 7 лет назад +19

Seph Nico True, it could be that as well, but almost no one today can ever hope to escape childhood without losing their innocence. Innocence is literally the absence of shame, and parents and society are very quick to thrust shame into childrens minds as they grow. People don't lose their innocence when they lose their virginity, they lose it years earlier when their parents or culture makes them ashamed of wanting to.

She was my valentine that year as well. Wish I could say more happened after that, but I moved away and we only remain friends online to this day. However, it was a perfect night that I hope to never forget. So many good times in my life have been accompanied by these wonderful musicians. For everyone wanting an English translation
    Now you are waking up
    Everything seems different
    I look around
But I see nothing at all
    Tie my shoes so
Is she still in her pajamas?
In a dream she was born
    I'm startled
But the sun, is it her?
    Where is she? In here?
    But where are you?...
Go for a walk (I go for a walk)
    And roam the streets
    Can't see a thing (I can't see a thing)
And so I use the stars
    She runs endlessly
    And climbs out thus
    She's the Glowing Sun
    And comes out
    I awake from a dream
To find my heart pounding, my hair tousled
Step out in front of the bed and see filthy shoes
And here you are, I'm feeling
And here you are, Glowing Sun
And here you are, Glowing Sun
And here you are, Glowing Sun
    And here you are...

The most beautiful video and song. Sigur Ros has aided and mended me through my battles with mental illness. They are a big part of who I am today. A gift from the heavens, if the heavens do exist. I listen to them during my long ketamine infusions now. The music keeps me grounded, while not distracting with lyrics I can comprehend. I am finally going to see them live in a couple months. I will sob the entire time, I am sure. They’re so much a part of my life.

+Kingro619 I was going through a pretty dark / rough time when my friend showed me this music video. It was pretty much my first exposure to Sigur Ros as well. It just made me realize, in a sense, what life is all about again. That running up the mountain; the tension in the chord progression that resolves into a beauty each time, like how life is supposed to be. Not to get all weird, but also as a Christian, it resonated with me like that as well -- persevering through suffering, and that there really is ultimately a true Good in life worth fighting and living for.
Does that answer your question? :)

The very first time I heard this song, I was completely mesmerized by its unique sound. I love how it starts off slowly and a bit dark, but builds up in intensity until it eventually explodes towards the end. It's strange, but this very song made me want to go to Iceland. After all, any country that has the ability of letting you you create such songs, should be worth a visit, right? And so it happened that in March 2018 I finally visited Iceland for the very first time. It was completely what I had hoped for: stunning landscapes, friendly population and the amazing northern lights. Can't wait to go back!

Probably one of the best music videos ever made. I am not usually one to even care for music videos, but their music videos are always so beautiful, both because of where they are filmed & what they are about or represent. There's only one music video this is second to, and that is their video "Viorar Vel Til Loftarasa" because it's so beautiful & sweet. It represents the sweetest love story & it has so much emotion, depth, & beauty. That video made my eyes water a bit, but that might be because I'm allergic to love stories.

This is the video and track I got acquainted with Sigur Ros. It blew my mind. I was sitting there in front of the TV and instantly got sucked into another world of music, freedom, phantasy, nature and a mixture of emotions and feelings! When the song came to the end, I just wanted it never to stop and keep on playing - I felt so good! Sigur Ros are not simply musicians. They are magicians that turn their music into something more - far beyond normal understanding.
