Jon Stewart and The Best F**king News Team host The Daily Show, an Emmy and Peabody Award-winning program analyzing the biggest stories in news, politics, and culture through a sharp, satirical lens. The Daily Show redefined the late night show category on TV and, with an audience of over 51M across social media platforms, has become a launching pad for some of the biggest stars in entertainment.
The Daily Show airs weeknights at 11/10c on Comedy Central.
@14:35. Not to knock Jon, but "it has been done within the confines of our legal system, therefore it's not fascist" is a terrible and ahistorical argument. Famously, the Nazis operated mostly within the confines of the German constitution, even as they issued decree after decree to target political enemies and minorities, and twisted the law to serve those ends. It was a core source for their popular legitimacy with the less radical elements of Germany. It was all "legal." The camps were "legal." The Holocaust was "legal.
So the conflation with "legal" with "non-fascist" is misleading and dangerous. Right now, trump is planning to build camps to deport millions of families without due process. That is fascist. Classically fascist. And I'm tired of entertaining the idea that it's not just because its "legal."
Haha, that means that the US system was already fascist.
That's why he says that.

And for better or for worse, both were brought about (and eventually ended) by a democratic process. Democracy isn't inherently moral either, but it's still the best system we've got.
@beenaplumber8379 but people keep saying that, and I don't agree.... We are currently proving that for democracy to be the best system, you need an intelligent well informed populous base

The firing of the inspectors is more serious than that. Less inspectors general means less eyes seeing the corruption going on, so trumps billionaires can more easily take control. This is a rare miss from Jon. The fact that he's even trying to end birthright citizenship, a right that is enshrined in The Constitution, with an executive order is appalling and authoritative, to act like it's anything else is dumb. In european history, the rise of fascism started with a lack of trust in denocratic institutions, then the election by the people of demagogues, then thier slow erosion of guardrails and corruption of democratic systems from within, ending only whrn those systems were no longer necessary to the fascist leader themselves.
This process was slow, incremental, and insidious... And claims that those opposing the gradual twisting of systems towards fascism were overreactions (aka: crying wolf) acted to ensure that prevention was not possible before this process could complete.
This has all happened before. Let's try and avoid it happening again.

THE FASCIST PLAYBOOK
Step #1. Create an enemy that your followers can hate and blame for their woes and problems. If you can create more than one so much the better.
Step #2. Discredit all media and reinforce the idea that yours is the only true word that can be trusted.
Step #3. Establish your Administration of loyalists bound only to you and your word only.
Step #4. Create an Extrajudicial group (like the Gestapo, Brown Shirts, or The Proud Boys) whom you can call upon for acts of pressure and intimidation as well as other activities you cannot order regular groups to perform like the police or the military.
Step #5. Establish a system whereby third parties can funnel money to you the leader in some way (like buying your Crypto) to legally bribe the leader (you) for preferential treatment. Use your loyalists (see #3) to obstruct others from getting the government to do what they want unless a “tribute” has been paid to the leader.

I’m really disappointed in the Daily Show on this one. All the red flags are flying, and we wanna talk about tech stocks? Make fun of Chuck Schumer? Downplay Trump’s actions? We should ALL be freaking the eff out.
And yet Trump wants free speech & gun rights, Democrats don't. So who are the fascists again ?
I hope you won't get to the point where there's actual fascism, because then, no one will take your clownish overreactions seriously
@@normf9020 You didn't get the point. It is fascism but Trump is only doing what apparently the constitution is allowing him to do anyway. It doesn't help at all if everyone is running around calling everything fascism because it diverts the attention from the really critical points. And in the end his voters don't really care. The only way forward for Democrats is to convince the voters as soon as possible that this power is better suited in their hands.
@samasoku legit. censorship is a tool of fascism and somehow we have less censorship now than the past 5 years. Like the complete opposite of Fascism 😂

I would say you are freaking out unnecessarily. Did you freak out like this when Biden was sending money to Israel? If not, I have no sympathy for you.
@@sethmeyer2443 Is Trump not sending money to Israel as well?
Yeah I think these are weak takes by Jon. I do agree that the constant call of everything as fascist doesn't help, but just glossing over the complete release of January 6th prisoners deserves more condemnation than just shrugging and saying well he has the power to do it.
Especially since his reaction was different about Hunter Biden's pardon, rightfully so, but suddenly it's okay to be nonchalant because it's within the president's power? Well, so was that.
I mean, I get that pointing it out doesn't move the needle politically. But also, his actions are objectively fascist. Installing loyalists in place of experts, pardoning those who committed violence on his behalf, trying to control sources of information through threats. And that's before the executive orders and forcing out immigrants. Saying that's fascism is like calling a duck a duck. Idk what else people should do when faced with fascist actions.
I appreciate that you see how naive Jon is being, but it bothers me that you still think that "the constant call of everything as fascist doesn't help." I'll agree that it's not conducive to a calm, balanced conversation, but fascists aren't conducive to a calm, balanced conversation. We've been calling things and people fascist because they've done been fascist! donald and elon didn't become this way on inauguration day, they've been spouting their rhetoric for years. And that's how long we've been calling them out for it. The problem isn't that we're calling people fascist. The problem is that nobody listened. Everybody thought we were hyperbolizing but if people had looked at what republicans say, what they support, and what they want, they'd see that we were right the entire time. But instead, reactionaries just decided out of hand that we were wrong because we couldn't be right, and now we have a party that's defending a billionaire who sieg heiled twice in a row. We've been ahead of the curve this entire time and people still think we're part of the problem.
And for the record, I'm not saying every republican is fascist. I'm saying the republican party has adopted fascist ideas and figureheads and the people that support them are supporting fascism whether they want to or not. The reason they can't see that is because they're operating under the same assumption Jon is. They think that just because things are "proper" and "legal" they must be okay. "The republican party is one of the two main political parties in the united states. That must mean their ideas are valid." They're not and they haven't been for a while. If you're still refusing to see that, you're part of the problem.
That's all you've got really?? You people pretend to be so smart... and yet you can only make an argument for your own side... ever thought about the other side's argument?? Biden pardoned 8,064 people, the most every in American history... He pardoned 7,827 more people than Trump did in his first administration. Biden has exercised true tyranny (mass censorship, mass forced illegal migration, bloated government, continued neoliberal/neocon wars, record inflation tax) in a way never seen in this country ever... and you are apparently ignorant to that fact.

Fascism isn’t any one event or point in time, it is a process. And we can all see it unfolding. At the moment, he is dismantling any voice of opposition or dissent - any who aren’t in agreement. This argument that we shouldn’t use the word for him is ahistorical and poorly understood by whoever suggested it. Fascists use legality to their own end.
I recommend reading from the academics on the subject, like this article:
“It is time to use the F word about Trump: Fascism, populism and the rebirth of history.” (Tourish, 2023) It’s open access.
There are distinct differences that make Trumpism different from previous administrations.
Agreed. The biggest challenge citizens have on the day a fascist regime begins is recognizing it and knowing how to respond. Fascist regimes are weak initially, but they become stronger over time. Fascists don't dismantle freedom all at once but drop by drop. It's sort of a "if we agree to do this one thing we don't like, then we'll get back to normal" thing. But doing that one thing more never stops. Democrats can't be reactionary but proactive.
Fascism you mean like how the Democrats suppressed free speech on social media during COVID? Zuckerberg even admitted it .... That the White House pressured them .
THIS IS SO IRONIC coming from the Left, as in the past 10 years any voice of opposition has been muted by the left. Ideas about gender, biology, education, nationalism, religion etc has ALL been deemed as "offensive" and silenced. This is your consequence since you opened these doors.

Jon has talked about the major problems in government for years, decades even. Trump is exploiting problems that already existed and have been slowly chipped into our system over the last 50 years by the conservatives in this country.
But it does prove that a broken system will always inevitably turn towards fascism.
But that's not an excuse to call anyone you don't like fascist

I am from Denmark, and I find it hard to understand how things have come to this. Denmark and the USA are NATO allies, and the United States has had all the access it needed since World War II.
Many Danes-and Europeans in general-are genuinely baffled that Trump, despite his dangerous and erratic behavior, has been elected again. It’s hard to comprehend how such a person can hold such power.
That said, I believe most Danes have great affection for the United States. Watching such a remarkable nation suffer under Trump and his administration feels unbearable. It’s heartbreaking to see a country once celebrated as a beacon of democracy appear to be sliding towards authoritarianism.
Knowing there are still many sane, kind, and intelligent people in your nation provides some comfort, but right now, things feel incredibly bleak.
Trump during his first term told two things to Europeans:
1. Do no rely on Russian gas
2. Increase your military budgets because the USA does not want to pay for your defense anymore.
You dumb Europeans laughed in his face. The rest is history. Contrary to you Europeans who are in self-destruction mode, Trump wants to make America great again. Get it now?

I hope Jon and TDS writers are somehow informed about this comment section. The critique is spot on. I don't expect every take on The Daily Show to be 100% accurate. It is a satirical show on a comedic platform, not a well-researched documentary.
However, previous misses could always be categorized as "oversimplified for time", "american worldview", or "edited for comedic effect". These were usually observations or jokes that weren't technically correct - but didn't harm the conclusion.
But in this case, the harm is in the conclusion. Legal ≠ democratic. The law is a living documentation of our societal rights and obligations. The law changes every single day.
Many commenters have perfectly worded the issue with today's statement, so I won't elaborate on that. But I do genuinely hope the outcry in these comments reaches The Daily Show and allows for either a debate or rectification on the topic. You are an important voice, Jon.
Had to jump to the comments as I felt weird watching this episode. I don't agree with the theme on this one. I do understand the point he's trying to make, but I also think EVERYONE should be calling out EVERYTHING Trump does right now. My fear is that these "small" and "legal" actions will simply continue. Firing independent watchdogs to appoint political hacks is blatantly authoritarian even if technically within presidential powers, and the 30 day notice and list of reasons is what we citizens like to call a “safeguard” on “abuse of power”, so no, it’s not a little thing we’re just quibbling over. So by your advice, we should not care or downplay all of the little cuts because we haven't been stabbed in the heart. All the while those little cuts serve to make us numb to the pain of the larger stabs and the bleeding out until we find the country dead. Maybe it takes hyperbole to get people to focus in a country of short attention spans, dulled empathy, and placated minds. But I do agree that a country built on norms, traditions, and precedent will fail by the corrupt not caring when people call them out for breaking those norms, traditions, and precedent.
Or breaking the laws. Why does Jon Stewart downplay the illegality of firing those IGs without notice to Congress and without just cause? That law was passed deliberately to protect them in their role as independent watchdogs. Even the spineless Lindsey Graham admits it is “technically “ illegal.

Nobody said not to care, how did you get that message out of this? The point was that you need to actually address the systemic issues and bring real proposals to the table. Jon's criticizing democratic whining more than anything here. They literally play right into the "stick it to the libs" BS the other side is always engaged in because it's part of the song and dance. Neither party actually cares about anyone.
"Trump and America isn't fascist yet" is the worst take I've ever seen from Jon. We're saying it because it's accurate , not because it's fun
I agree! Love Jon, and I know he needs to turn the news into jokes, but fascism is happening now. His point for Dems and us to step up is valid though
Just wait...because what he is GOING to do is gonna make what he IS doing look cuddly.
Fascism is a natural progression of statism
Are the Democrats fascists then?
"You can't be mad at what Trump is doing, he didn't break any important laws to do it" isn't the take I was expecting.
He literally broke election laws to get elected the first time. Michael Cohen even went to Jail for it... Trump has not seen a single consequence.
It's true though. This is the system, stop trusting it, It can and does cause this stuff to happen. "Working within the system" is folly and will fail. Stop supporting any politician that insists the only solution is to work within the system, because they're lying.
Ryudd, given the vigour of Jon's response to the lawlessness item by item, I think the line you quoted was highly sarcastic.
He did tell the truth. An uncomfortable truth and that is why I respect him even though mostly I don't agree with on policy. I can expect him to tell the truth even if I don't like it and of all the left leaning media personalities he is the most genuine the most honest. Mad respect for John Stewart.
He have 19 chief of accusations agains him he is a convicted felon now you are going to tell mpe that it is the right exemple for our futur generation wake up people be less selfish and care about the global aspect of this planet .
You're absolutely right, John we should stop saying FASCISM all the time cuz that never works. Repeating the same talking point never scored any political points for any party - BENGHAZI - what were we thinking? we should just focus on policies - HILLARY'S EMAILS - cuz those are the messages that really get covered - OBAMA'S BIRTH CERTIFICATE - whether it's social media or Legacy Media or you - BIDEN'S AGE.
The events of the 1930s happened democratically, too. And then ... well, we all know what happened. In America, it is 1935, and the clock is ticking.
No, it is 1932, we will see what happens in the next 5 years.
lol..yall really want to be special so bad you compare stopping illegal immigration to racism
Take your meds
You missed his point. The problem is, if we call something fascism that is covered by his constitutional and democratic powers as a president ... You lose the argument and you'll be deafening people's ears when he actually starts going fully rogue, which he clearly will at some point. You can have an outrage about this, it's bad, but chose wisely how you argue this, or you will not have anyone listening to you when the real sh*t starts going down
It's 2025. Anyone who thinks otherwise just being overdramatic
Jon, I know you want to discourage panic, but just because something happens with the "consent of the governed" (as flimsy an argument that is for a president who has never gotten a majority of the popular vote) doesn't mean it isn't fascism. Authoritarian governments form all the time because people put them in power and then they pushed that power as far as they could.
And even things that are strictly within the letter of the law can be fascist. You're really off base here, frankly. Everything Trump and his Republican friends are doing fits the bill, and the fact they were in a position to do so because our (broken) electoral system decided they should be does not make it okay.
of course it's not okay and yes it means it's fascism .. but his point is that it's not only your electoral system that is broken .. it's the whole system. the constitution as well, because it should prevent blatant power grabs, but it allows it
Yes, and Thank you for pointing out the painfully obvious! I love Jon, always have, but he's missing a few very important points here.
We just survived the nuclear war trump would bring in 2016-2020 and the fascist regime and the concentration camps and now it happens again :(
pretty sure he got the majority of the popular vote
Just because Trump does something that you don’t agree with, doesn’t mean it’s fascism. I know emotions are hard to control sometimes, but this isn’t fascism, the world isn’t ending, and it’ll be okay.
It's not about whether it can be defined as fascism or not. His actions are INEXCUSABLE
until a dem does it. then you’ll make 50 excuses
Exactly
He's doing exactly what most Americans elected him to do. He won because Dems voted for him too. Dems who were tired of the liberals who took over the Dem party.
Which one(s)?
Did you even watch the video lol? Just like Jon said, you dont have to like what he's done so far, but they all fall in line and are legal to do so. If you're mad, be mad at the founding fathers.
So Jon as a German I will say only this: with your argumentation you show you haven't learnt from our history. I always admired your reason and courage to fight for your democracy. But now you are blind to what is really happening right in front of your eyes. If you ever asked how our history was possible - it was because it started just like this.
He is literally a fascist. You still going to tell us to stop overreacting? After he did every single thing we warned he would? Man... this is my area of expertise and I'm begging you to stop downplaying the fascism already at work. Blaming voters is such a shitlib move, Jon.
Totally agree. I get the vibe he’s trying to downplay everything. No, breaking the law to fire people in charge of your accountability so you can replace them with sycophants, is a VERY big deal, indeed. These latest segments have been very disappointing.
An uneducated democracy with wealth inequality always leads to fascism. The recovery starts from educating the masses to think critically and understand the accountability on their part. John is doing just that. By making people understand through their mistakes exactly what they have enabled and how it can go wrong if this fragile system doesn't have constant vigilance.
Democracy is and always will be a tightrope walk. Every tiny stabiliser muscle has to be engaged and you can't rest any core muscle even if it seems they don't have much role at the time.
@@katelynnehansen8115no I don’t get that vibe at all…. Did you watch it fully? He’s saying we’re all f’ed up as a country and that the constitution shouldn’t grant Executive Actions/Orders because you can get a dictator.
@@felicianicole7690he literally said “we voted for this”
Uhhh something being perceived as legal does not make it not fascist or immoral. This is a bad take.
Trumps doing great. 😊
Am I missing something? How does Stewart think the firing of these government employees because they tried to hold him accountable and will not steward his agenda is not a reason for concern?
They didn’t try to hold him accountable. They changed the rules to try to find him guilty of something … anything. There is a long history of this … from Cointel Pro to now. Laws were changed. This has always happened , it’s just been able to be covered in a way that’s never been covered before. The FBI is weaponized but it’s always been weaponized . We are blind to it if it’s for someone we don’t like.
As Jon said, Trump was democratically elected. So, the concern means nothing.
@ So he won an election. Does that mean he should remove all checks, balances, and means for accountability on the nation’s leader?
Then blame the system which gives him the power to do this. Did no one in 200 years of history think that giving the president king like power is bad? Or perhaps that's the whole point of being a president. It literally his job, it his turn to run the country according to his ideology and preferences.
The next president can hire these people back if he wants to.
@@jessif. We live in hope!
Maybe I'm crazy, but Jon's reaction to the Jan 6 pardons seemed to be a resounding "meh, it's in the constitution" ...was that the same reaction he gave to the Hunter pardon?
Exactly. I am still looking for the real Jon
@@ntseindieyeah, he's gotten sort of, what's the word? Soft?
A pardon is the right of a president, the right to birth right citizenship is a constitutional right. John didn’t say meh it’s the constitution? It literally takes 37 states agreement and senate/house majority to amend it, even the ERA couldn’t pass. Do some research bud
He missed on that one. IMO
The difference between hunter is Biden repeated dozens of times and so did white house saying he won't be pardoned. Trump always said he will pardon them.
The road to fascism is lined with people telling you to stop overreacting.
Hitler's power grab was constitutional in Weimar. It was "democratic" under the (failed) system. Officially, there was no coup.
So I'm not convinced with the argument that it's not fascist because it's theoretically not illegal. It IS fascism regardless. This time, it's not exaggerated to use that term.
Is it fascist to be antisemitic? So explain the squad please
I mean, the legality was questionable at best. For example, there was a lot of coercion required to pass the Enabling Act of 1933, which made him into a defacto dictator.
And as for the Reichstag Fire Decree, even changing birthright citizenship is being contested/blocked by the courts, so how are more important rights going to just be waved away?
I have a riddle: What do you call it when your government threatens your livelihood if you don't get a vaccination? Starts with an F and rhymes with shmashism.
@@doomguy4945 You have a point. It's not the same; there's coercion happening now with Trump, but not on the same level. I'd still say it's fascist tactics though, thankfully US democracy is not as weak as Germany's was then. I hope the institutions can resist and that there's not a worse version of January 6 at some point.
Professor Finklestein made the same observation as Jon Stewart just did. Maybe you should watch his video to understand what Jon is saying here. Since Democrats have accused Republicans of being fascists since at least the Bush era, as Jon said, regular Americans don't know whether to believe Democrats or refuse to take them seriously. Believe it or not, most Americans are not extremists and in the same way they could give Obama a huge victory in 2008, they could also give Trump a victory in 2024.
I am sorry but being angry at Trump disregarding all norms and laws is not an overreaction. He can’t fire the inspector generals without a reason. Yet he did. That’s a problem. And yes, it’s illegal. AND authoritarian, if I may add!!
Time for another impeachment, or is that entirely out of the question?
No need to apologize!!!!
Trump had a reason, he just didn't say out loud "I'm firing the inspectors general so my cronies can commit crimes."

Blatant corruption is another reason. He already fired many IGs in the first term. This time, he didn't think twice about it.
