Inside The Cycle Hire Depot

- London's cycle hire scheme has been running since 2010, and has expanded a lot since then.
Two maintenance depots repair and manage the distribution of bikes around London. We went to have a look behind the scenes at the Penton Street depot, near King's Cross.
One thing we love about the scheme is that it's the only form of public transport in London that's 'open' on Christmas Day.
POLL! Let us know with a simple 'yes' or 'no' by clicking the (i) button if you've ever ridden a cycle hire bike.

When my husband and I visited London 3 years ago this was our favorite way to get around. I am a novice cyclist and was sure that i would be terrified of riding side-by-side a red bus; but it was the best cycling experience of my life.
You really should do a "Secrets of the London Parks".
You could show such interesting things as the Pet Grave-site on the edge of Hyde Park, near the exit of Lancaster gate Tube.
they should extend it south towards croydon
It have become a part of my routine when visiting London: A cycle trip with these in or around Hyde park from my hotel in Bayswater to Marble Arch. A great way to start the day. Also great system for visitors or tourist, because you can just use your credit card to get started within few minutes.
It is also great a long the river bank. When it occasionally is some distance to a tube station, these bikes is usally close :)
I love these, I cycle them too and from work all the time along the E/W Cycle Superhighway. Way more fun than sitting bored on a circle from Tower Hill all the way to Ladbroke Grove! Doesn't take much longer either. The only time I don't enjoy riding these is when the air is stale because of pollution from cars :(
Hopefully they are waiting for a new river crossing to introduce it to greenwich, although Tower bridge is ok I think - lots and lots of cars, but one lane each, so no pulling out without looking!
And Hackney proper seems just too obvious?
Yay a vid on this channel since it was ages!
So more vids on friday?
not the 'only' form of 'public transport' in London on Christmas Day. upto approx 1.00am the last buses are running, the hackney carriages/London Taxis can be viewed as a form of personal public transport for the well-off, they of course operate all day (and a additional 'fee' charged) and there is at least one tour-bus route that can hop-on/off in the central London area during the day, which can we used (mainly by tourists) as 'public transport' on the Christmas Day.
Are you able to do a sort of review on the TX4? I know you've done a video already, but I mean a review of the vehicle.
It's a bit weird to me using the word "scheme" here. Makes the whole endeavour sound dodgy.
#16191! LOL! Now there's an interesting new way of calling someone a slag!
How far out of London are you premeditated to cycle on there bikes?
Comparing to OFO bike. will it literally destroy the company?
This is great
Seems a lot more advanced than the way google handles bikes for use on the googleplex. Saw a photo of one of their bikes in the bed of a truck in Nevada, they really have a problem with theft
Justin Noker I've been to the Googleplex, as far as I know the bikes are just laying around, presumably only intended for employees but the way they seemed to be laying around it isn't a surprise they get stolen regularly
hello Turan!
TFL posted this on Twitter:p thats why i got here :p
+The Small Cyclist Good to have you along! We've got lots more videos if you want to click around & subscribe ...
***** Already done! I also spotted you in the TV program"The Tube Going Underground" where you where at the one of a kind lift that goes sideways (that co-incidently broke down soon after ;D) That you for your great content, i noticed you got the privilage of having a drive of a train, well, i also did, i got to operate a Jubilee Line 1996 stock (On ATO) For 30 minutes to an hour, what an experience, i am hopefully doing Work Experience there too! Possibly in Summer holidays, thank for reply :),
Have a nice day - TSC
There's one of these bikes in perham down in Wiltshire it must have been there a while because it's still in the old Barclays colours
Ha ha! Someone must have been very fit
+Geofftech I have no idea I've only seen it a couple of times like I said its an older one because it's still blue
When I see it again I'll note the number down
Why no bikes in Rotherhithe, Deptford or Greenwich???

They should extend futher West to Feltham.
I was surprised to discover that they don't have an electric motor. In Madrid, our Booster Bikes have motors. Madrid is quite hilly so it's great to be able to fly up those hills and always keep up with traffic!

Is there somewhere to purchase those lights that shine a bicycle symbol onto the road?
RiceBTS google search blaze lights
blaze.cc is the official website, and where I got my Laserlight from
3:34 I'm 99% sure that a kid from my school drew that
Hire bike sounds plain. Why not call it divvy? already taken
Once a year!!
well they are not dong many miles, most folk would use the tube to cross London
They need to Atleast extend it a little bit more East, ending it at Poplar is insulting as I live just off it :/
I wish people would look after these bikes 😕
Do pa video called secrets of the Crossrail
How?

Sounds better than the stupid "pick up anywhere, leave parked anywhere" scheme being done here in Australia. Very philanthropic but no public consultation, they are dumped everywhere and a popular sport after a night at the pub is hurling as many as can be rounded up into the nearest waterway....
I really wanted to use these, but it does not make financial sense. at £2 for every 30 minutes and a journey time of 1h 20 minutes on a bike, my commute would cost me £6 in each direction - Plus my ~£5 Oyster fare into fenchurch street, that's a whopping £22 to commute back and forth to work each day!
Whereas, I can choose to stay on the tube, and my Oyster fare stays at £5 ...
Until it becomes cheaper to take the bike, Boris bikes are really only for enthusiasts and owning your own bike makes more sense
daggertom1 I paid 2 pound for 24 hour use only needed it for 20 mins
daggertom1 an American here, so I don't really understand all of this much, but I will say $20 US gets us 400 miles, it seems you guys pay $20 just to get to work
Agree, even worse my first bke did not release, yet I was charged for two!
buy a cheap used bike upgrade slowly with superior parts? frame has to be in good condition though and best learn basic maintenance and accumulate a few tools (if u have none in hand yet) along the way ^^
Was he really winching that bike up at 1:08?
What's wrong with wedging upside down between a couple of bricks like we used to do......bet they don't even have a bone spanner!
The way Geoff pronounced santander really bugged me. It's "San tan der" not "san tanduur"
yes, another bank with trouble at the top!
I hope NW London doesn't get these things.
Why?
daggertom1 Very few regular cyclists and anyone that does cycle regularly has a bike.
I want to see more cycling infrastructure in NW and more cyclists, but those things are a waste of space and money.
Those two guys looks stupid that they will put a lock in the docking station
lol

Not an engineer. No degree, no title.
Hakan Koseoglu don't know what it is with the Brits calling their mechanics 'engineers' ...
