  • Geoff goes out to explore the River Bus services that you can take on the Thames, they're quicker and probably more convenient than you'd think, and now accepts Oyster and Contactless payments making it easier than ever to get a boat down the Thames in London!

    I couldn't help but smile and let out a little cheer when the builders plate came up and saw Neptune was built by INCAT in Tasmania Australia, As an Aussie I can't help but be proud to see one of our products out and about in the world considering we've lost so much of our manufacturing industry.

      My favourite way to get to France used to be via the HSC Condor Rapide, an Incat catamaran renamed Speed One, because it was ridiculously quick compared with the old Sealink ferries to Calais. Shame it no longer operates...

    The boats are great, but if they want it to be a "tube line" as Boris said, they need to get rid of the extra fee for travelcard holders. It's just like the cablecar, it's not an expensive experience for doing it once as a tourist compared to let's say the London Eye, but it adds up if you use it every day. I would be ok with not including it in day- and weekpasses for not attrackting tourists to much, but it should be included in month- or yearpasses. Same goes for the cablecar.

    Pretty unique, generally :) We have a similar system here in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, called waterbus. It's also integrated into the national public transport fare system, similar to oyster cards, and it's got a bit of a bigger network than the Thames clippers. But that's what you get with the world's 2nd biggest port :)
    Here's a little map of the system in the city center: www.waterbus.nl/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Waterbus-Rotterdam-plattegrond.jpg
    And the whole system, schematically: democms.nl.c1n7.86id.nl/files/content_afbeeldingen/f514634d2b98074ee763b5b8b01b0923.jpg

    It would be good if they could include the river boat services in the travelcard, as they do in Sydney. It might encourage more people to use the boat services as form of travel.

    • @vectoredthrust5214
      @vectoredthrust5214 7 лет назад +2

      Capridec79 the river services are totally run by a separate, private company and TfL only give them the license to run their service. It's not like the Overground or buses where a private company is operating the service on TfL's behalf. I'm guessing that's the reason why the travelcards don't include Clipper service
      That being said, you do get 1/3 off of PAYG and Season tickets if you have a travelcard, which is a pretty good incentive

    I think that it would be so useful, if it were possible to travel by Thames Clipper, directly to and from London City Airport and the ExCeL Centre. These two locations are so close to the River Thames, and yet the infrastructure is not quite there to make this happen.

    It pains me to watch this as the river is such an under used transport resource in London. The passenger numbers always seam low on the few times i've been aboard, i guess this is in part to the high ticket prices and lack of service frequency. I've been to Rotterdam and the river transport is amazing so quick and inexpensive, they are almost viewed in the same light as buses. In Hong Kong you can pay 15p to cross the harbour. London has a proud and world renowned maritime history, which has never been represented at all within public transport and... surely it's also a no brainer to help alleviate congestion on other forms of transport around the city.

      I think with HK ( I used the star ferry a lot) is they are essential to get from the NT to Central , sure you have the tunnel , but in many way's they are the main transport link. They are great though, aside from all the people trying to sell you fake Armani suits at the Terminal, I just pretended to be Norwegian with no English.

    Still ridiculously expensive, though, for occasional use when visiting.

    This looks neat... plus I used to work as a deckhand on boats and as a dockhand in Pittsburgh, so it is fascinating to see. When I last visited London in 2001 I didn’t get to ride on the water (and I think TfL was in its infancy at the time), but this looks like something to definitely check out (and I hope the boat crews don’t think that I’m an undercover inspector for the Merchant Marine!).

    We have a similar service here in Vancouver that is run by the Coast Mountain Bus Co. (who also runs most of the buses in the area) called the SeaBus... it runs similar to RB4 with just a single line crossing the Burrard Inlet between Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver & Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver. This line has 4 vessels: MV Burrard Beaver (1976), MV Burrard Otter (1976), Burrard Pacific Breeze (2009) & Burrard Otter II (2015). Frequency is usually 15 minutes during the day with 30 min frequency late nights as well as Saturday & Sunday mornings.

      That being said, I don't mind sponsored videos of you consider who is paying for the video and the subject at hand. A video about the less well-known Thames Clippers sponsored by Thames Clippers? That's perfectly fine.
