- Sukuna vs Gojo is an event that many fans of JJK are looking forward to seeing adapted into the anime. While on the surface, this battle is simply putting the two strongest characters in the series against each other in a long-awaited match-up, there is a lot under the surface between this battle of the strongest. This video essay goes into the thematic meaning behind Sukuna vs Gojo and explores how, in his own way, Sukuna actually saved Gojo...

CORRECTION: At 10:53, I said Sukuna said the line about teaching love to Yorozu. This line was actually spoken by Yorozu to Sukuna. Thank you to everyone who pointed this out in the comments!
Oh sure. Sukuna "saved" Gojo alright. Until Sukuna just cleaved Gojo in half. Spoiler warning. Sukuna kills Gojo. Cope and seethe JJK fans.
It's lonely at the top.
@adrammelechthewroth6511 yea wow, umm, he explained that at the middle or beginning somewhere
I REALLY love this analysis! I never thought about how lonely Gojo and Sukuna would be as the strongest sorcerers in the world - but it makes total sense. Being at the top, it's so hard for anyone else to relate to you and your struggles. It really makes me wonder how Gege will resolve Sukuna's story...
Sukuna to me feels like the perfect foil to Gojo. He feels like what Gojo could turn into had he shed all worldly connections after losing Geto.
Left Right Goodnight.
yuji will probably play a major role in ending sukuna's story
Sukuna will win
I think it's wisecrack? Did a video on one punch man that talks about this. Opm is the strongest hands down and the result is he's depressed. Ties into Victor Frankel (sp) philosophy ~man needs a goal for the future to make the days bearable.
To me, Sukuna seems like the person who wants more outta life than his desires. But he never had a reason since nothing cause him trouble. He thought he’s given up on finding purpose but that’s exactly why he turned himself into a cursed object. He wants there to be purpose for him in the future since he ruled in his day. And no one ever made him question his purpose/resolve until yuji.
Nice one!
Personally I think this is a wrong way of thinking for Sukuna. I mean there are obviously more domains in life than just fighting, and it you really wanted to do something challenging, you could find it. But no, instead he has to go on a violent temper tantrum and fight everything he sees and eat people
@@toplobster7714 He was just feeling silly
@@burnedoutgraduatestudent4482 we do a little bit of trolling in shibuya
it's funny how a lot of people complain about Gojo's show of his true character in 236, it actually just proves how no one will be able to understand him, not even us, the audience, of his true nature. When he was shown as a highschooler in the afterlife scene, it shows that he never really changed, he is the Gojo that was more happy about the fact that he was pushed to the brink than he was mad over Amanai Riko's assassination.
This was Gojo's character. Yes, he could show concern for his students, but he's not as empathetic as people make him out to be. He enjoys being strong, he loves it. He didn't take on the role of the strong protecting the weak until Geto asked him that one specific question, in which bugged him, so much so that he tried to take on Geto's philosophy of "the strong must protect the weak" through his own way; honing strength.
He's the strongest because he's Satoru Gojo, he enjoys fighting. He gets high from it. The only reason he had an existential crisis was because a person of the same caliber as him questioned his very own existence. It's no surprise that Gojo tried to find the answer by taking over Geto's shoes (at least the Geto he used to know before the mental breakdown.)
It's also quite poetic that Sukuna answered the question for him. He will be remembered as Satoru, not as the strongest.
THIS. THIS.
What made me angry at Gojo stan or the power scalers are, being seen as the strongest is the bane of Gojo's life. Gege gave us a great execution, possibly the best one I've seen so far of the 'strongest' trope because he actually write a good compelling story for his arc with a really tragic ending. There's extra chapter or something that a lot of people were asked "who is gojo satoru to you?" with everyone answering "he's the strongest" EXCEPT for Geto, who replied "he's my best friend".
THAT'S Who Gojo Satoru is at his core. Someone who's secretly suffering from his loneliness and tried to raise the bar so a lot of people can reach his level. Someone who fought for Geto's ideal before he starts to get consumed by hatred.
Ive said the same thing, he loves being strong basks in it and had room for Geto to be on top with him. After Geto, he fostered stronger students so they could stand besides him, meaning he aint going to stoop down any lower on his level, nah get on my level or dont lol is the vibe I got. Gojo is an annoying little sht, thats the truth and its not a negative but makes him lovable to the fandbase. Regardless it doesnt change his personality and character, he had a heart and was human sure but he hardly showed a soft vulnerable side in which showed weakness it just isn't in his nature and yet the fans of him paint him into this perfect being, its weird putting him on a pedestal like everyone in the JJK verse did. They failed to understand Gojos charcter when they equally view him the same. Sure he lives his students but its also for his own selfish goal.
This is why Sukuna's REAL domain is Malevalent Kitchen
Yuji got those claws of calamity
A fun tidbit about the “are you gojo because…” line is that it is a reference to Plato’s Euthyphro Dilemma, which is one of the most famous philosophical writings about ethics. I think this is interesting because it’s a reference to western thought, rather than eastern which most of jjk is about, which i feel is under explored. A TLDR about the euthyphro dilemma is basically the question: what makes something worth doing?
Huh, I was always a little hopeful that Gojo will come back because I am attached to his character. (Fangirl denial at it best)
But now that I think about it, he really did die in peace.
He may not have been able to achieve his (tbh unrealistic) vision of a generation of sorcerers as strong as him, or at least strong enough to survive the jjk world, but I think his motivation for that was to save other people from loneliness and the pain of losing their friends. And in the end, he did not die lonely, he even had fun on the way out.
He even got to reunite with Geto in the end, signifying his loneliness coming to an end. I do wonder if the airport will show up again or if that’s a Gojo exclusive version of limbo.
Tbh I didn’t like his conclusion. If you think about it in broader way. First and foremost gojo should not be fighting for himself and if he was then basically you breaking his character post hidden inventory arc. Gojo had basically one role which geto also said it to him. To protect the weak . Gojo was saving his students from higher ups to given them better future and at the end you are just satisfied. He had faith in his students but they failed in shibuya and rn situation is not good at all. Also in real life LOVE itself is never present ( except love of parents) . There are very few people who had found true love. Also in practical life sometimes you have to look beyond love in some situations. Those situations basically involve life and death. Love has many meanings. Love can also mean to protect people you care about at any coast. Love also means presence of certain person in your life. In jjk love and loneliness are counter parts. But in reality they always come together. You have love then also you may feel lonely. Also being at top or bottom people will love you but cannot understand what you feel is simple reality bcoz you have not lived that persons life. Being at top or bottom you will be lonely
@@vatsaljanani7603his students failed because they were too young though. If Kenjaku were few yrs late, each one would be a monster in his own way imo
@@teddysama5745 possibly yes
@@teddysama5745idk if that's strictly true tbh... Many of the power ups we've seen have been directly because Kenjaku enacted his plans when he did...
It's entirely likely that had Kenjaku waited, the cursed spirit team would've been stronger than they were, as Mahito was VERY young for a cursed spirit, and was already genuinely dangerously strong, and the sorcerers would've still been without the power ups we've seen so far due to not being forced into the situations that caused them.
While I think the Gojo characterization you describe here is accurate, I don't think you're correct about Sukuna for two reasons. The first and most obvious issue is Sukuna straight up says he's note bored, Kashimo wonders if Sukuna's life gets dull and Sukuna notes that the unique flavors of each individual human makes for an amusing pursuit. The idea his life is boring is something normal people assume would be the case and project onto him, but we clearly see this isn't the case given Sukuna is having the time of his life fighting a bunch of people who are obviously not challenging him. I think your conceit of love as a challenge falls flat at least in Sukuna's case because he's very clearly operating on a different system than everyone else.
The second is less direct but Sukuna states that folks are projecting their feelings onto him and that he hasn't experienced loneliness or boredom. He's an inhuman calamity and attempting to put him into a human box will always misunderstand him. Gojo, Kashimo, and Yorozu all doubted themselves, all sunk into their fear of being unable to connect with others, all had their initial ideals about the world shaken, and suffered for it whereas Sukuna did not. In fact Sukuna's only shaken when he realizes Yuji's conviction to his ideals is equally unshakable which risks Sukuna questioning his worldview, something he'd find unacceptable. That's basically why he hates Yuji, who is ironically one of the only characters who properly understands that Sukuna is at his heart a petty asshole with no redeeming qualities. Truly a mutual disdain build upon understanding.
Really enjoyed your analysis on Sukuna's mindset/pov, I wld actually look forward to a more indepth video on sukuna esp his relationship with itadori
I’d like to see how this current arc wraps up before making my “Why Sukuna is Yuji’s Biggest Hater” video. But it’s certainly an idea I’ve got in the back of my mind.
I think I know where you're going with this video and I am glad someone is talking about it. That airport scene had so much character work in it.
There’s so little screen time put into Gojo’s internal mentality post Hidden Inventory. The airport scene gave us some much needed insight into both Gojo and Sukuna.
"Gojo is not lonely in the physicsl sense but in the existential sense" is such a good way to phrase it! It's like Superman having his parents, lois and friends but they will never know what it's like to be Kryptonian
Ure saying airport scene is a masterpiece but many feel that scene is among the worst writing in jjk... completely decimating gojos character which was made through 235 chapters....a fight which gojo seemed to win next moment he's dead what the hell
I really like your video. It’s a thoughtful and thorough interpretation of JJK that really helped me understand these characters better.
1 minute in and I love how this is going and we need more analysis of the characters and story as a whole because the fanbase acts like it can't understand what it's been reading for the last few yrs or something, you'd shed light on
"Are you fraudulent because you're Satoru Gojo? Or are you Satoru Gojo because you're fraudulent"

10/10 video! I've also had similar thought on Gojo and Sukuna ever since the airport chapter.
Man great analysis!

I feel like I’ve already understood all this but could never put it into exact words. Ty for this video
You hit the nail on the head with this one bro

great video
I like how it’s sort of hinted at that during the one month time skip kashimo and gojo spoke to each other about what it’s like to be the strongest, and that kashimo knew the fight was “for gojos sake” because he knew gojo needed to be able to let lose and express him self through the toughest fight of his life
Gege just wrote the side of the heroes or main protagonist story that audiences usually do not see. It is a good way to show that being at top is lonely. To become peerless.
Good video 👍
Wow, an inarguably insightful character analysis. Also, this is probably the reason so many fans ship Gojo with Utahime; she’s unconquerable and always presents a challenge to him. She gives him no special treatment and doesn’t see him through the rose tinted glasses. Probably why he talks to her so often. I really do wonder what they discussed in that 3 min of phone conversation we weren’t privy to. Well done.
its like sad when you your strong through gojo's eyes its kinda exhausting but when you look over through Goku's eyes its just a need to keep chasing and never give up i'd say based off Gojo's mindest would you say he was a big fish in a small pond until sukuna arrived? Since he couldn't find anyone that could understand his strength or feeling of being the storngest?

I still feel conflicted about Gojo's death (not just the offscreen). His death made sense and was inevitable narratively or he would've been permanently injured and that would leave his students to carry on his legacy of being the strongest. The airport scene is very confusing since Gojo died with no "regrets". Not only did he say he would save both Geto and Megumi but he also wanted to see his students become stronger than him. He should also know that if he couldn't win against Sukuna who else could? Unless his students have an awakening like both he and Sukuna did.
Maybe this was a selfish last laugh where he could be with geto again and be happy while having blind optimism towards his students success
Definitely believe gojos coming back

Remind me of one of my fav cc back in the day. He's a multiple time world champs, but because the game is on its death bed more and more of his friends decide to retire. Felt lonely on the top, he decide to retire the game and start his career in other games, despite the backlash he got afterwards
"at the end ur infinity meant nothing"
Genius dude
In my opinion, you stop being a person when you don't feel anything anymore... When you're devoid of all emotions... No tiny essence of it... As it is the representation of living.
Sukuna, on the psychological level, is still human even with his inhuman strength... As anger, fury, bloodlust, and arrogance are indeed human emotions, whether you'd like it or not.
But still most of his emotions aren't there ,so he has to fill that gap with his strength
I guess you cant have an existential crisis if you stop existing
I really enjoyed this video! I immediately related it to Berserk, in the phrase that "I consider a friend someone who is on my same level". That's why, the moment Guts became stronger than Griffith, Griffith was left alone, and became resentful. In a similar way, once Sukuna defeated Gojo, he was alone again, without anyone around his level to be a good match. Without anyone he could truly relate to.
And even though we see it with the concept of strength, this isolation does exist in the real world, in things like hobbies and worldview. I have felt it, and it's an unescapable truth. All humans are different, Everyone is on top or below of others in different things, and so it's almost impossible for humans to truly understand each other. Anyways, I love these concepts.
Actually Sukuna does paradoxically have goals, achievements, and love. His goal is his base desires, achievements too many to list, and his love of being an all powerful glutton.
12:02 is it me or this line right here feel like it represent what a animal does down the food chain or in general the main thing "Survival."

Hey, anyone know what jujutsu kaisen chapter 1 title name is?
Christ bless you, good video bro
Christ is not real
My theory is Gojo will be revived but won’t have the six eyes any more so he’s practically normal give him a book end to where he can experience life without carrying the burden of being the strongest and we find out that yuji was created to be a younger brother for sukuna someone to finally bond and understand sukuna to a point where yuji has the power to exorcise sukuna making yuji become the new king of curses instead of causing mayhem he helps people and find a way to give curses more meaningful exorcism rather than just killing them out right
even amongst a lot people, you can feel lonely
Facts.❤
The price of fame may not be worth it when a person has to lose or give up something in order to get it.
I’m Gojo’s case, he didn’t really choose the fame or power, he was born into it.
I never knew jjk is about love
🐐
and a interesting interaction would be, Gojo and Vergil
7:40 WHAT IS BRO DOING WITH HIS HAND 😭💀
Do what ever you want .but i need gojo please
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
2:20 bro got infinty on lol
10:58 its not sukuna . Its Yorozu who said that line
Up next! “How Sukuna killed Gojo”
7:30 😭😭😭
If only he trained, gojo would’ve won if he tested himself more
That's true if Gojo had an open barrier domain 9 times out of 10 he would win against Megkuna. Even then a Heian Era Sukuna still has a very high chance to lose.
That’s just it, he has no one else in the world he could’ve tested himself against. He was leagues above every other person in the story asides from Sukuna.
Nahhh gojo with open unlimited void is nightmare 💀💀
Gojo would still lose
He literally did though? He honed his skills to the absolute finest to reach sukuna said by gojo himself saying he didn't train and try to train is an insult to gojo and if he never tried or trained dude would never get past learning red let alone master domain which he had to try for
So Sukuna is not the strongest king of curses because he is Sukuna, but he is cursed with being the strongest we know as Sukuna.
Does that mean that regardless of if he lives and dies another will take his place?
❤️❤️❤️❤️
sweet dub in the first 7 seconds 😎
Thanks!
Limitless or infinity and be symbolism to gojos loneliness when anything gets near gojo it never reaches him how no one could ever relate to him and understand him
From gojo pov and his fans he was completely dominating the battle against sukuna
However from sukuna pov and his fans sukuna was simply outplaying gojo the whole time
Sukuna simply was not outplaying gojo the entire fight. He made some pretty fatal mistakes. Due to the nature of the ten shadows he needed he did have to take a pretty heavy beatdown to adapt but getting hit by infinite void, losing his domain, getting knocked out, getting nervous and getting hit by the in his own words fatal hollow purple and losing most if not all of ten shadows was definitely not in his plans.
TLDR
“Are you happy because you are yourself or you are yourself because you are happy”
( I just enlightened myself )
Love u
so what if gojo met someone as perfect as him, someone who was already the strongerst from the date of his birth?
maybe like freeza before namek?
Thats probably why he didn't dodge the world cutting slash tojust experience human loss and defeat and relate to the dead
Ok these titles getting outta hand! 😂
11:37 ❤❤❤
So Sukuna is Gojo’s new boyfriend
Wait hold up. It was Yorozu that told Sukuna that SHE WOULD TEACH HIM about love I thought. He was remembering her words to him and not his words to her. He never spoke to her in their first meeting. 🤔 gotta go reread.
Gojo protected Yuji cause he wanted to build his best friend lol
Go really isn’t gonna move jo SuKuna you are not safe if jo trips well…
Sukuna didn’t say the shit about love except to kashimo, that was Yorozu. The loneliness brought from absolute strength was said by yorozu
Yuji 🐐❤️
Sukuna true technique is exposure. He spreads your soul so thin you lose your sense of self
He had students though that he hung out with but could never really teacher cause he had it so easy leaving kusakabe and other to pick up his
Slack but they made his life important long before Sukuna . Sukuna is def strong due to his personality unlike like gojo who doesn’t hate everyone who isn’t strong
Sukuna reminds me is someone who is humble with a good mindset and gojo isn’t actually alone you’re on alone when people hate u like he lost get at kfc😢😂
👍
So.... he does admit that mei is strong in hidden inventory... u think they smashed?
Sukuna definitely is likened to shiva the strongest battle god so I wouldn’t say gojo was born to be the pinnacle
I get so annoyed by 'Gojo fans' that don't understand Gojo, don't understand that every facet of his character paints a distinct picture, from his childish behavior caused by his lack of development to his curse being a literal infinite gap between him and the world that forces him to fight alone because his allies can't play around it. The reason Yuji is the main character of JJK in the way Gojo never could've been is because Yuji is constantly pairing up with and learning from his allies. Gojo says you die alone, and Yuji's entire purpose in life is to live such that he dies surrounded by his friends. Gojo is the cautionary tale-no man is an island.
"It's ironic, isn't it-When granted everything, you can't do anything."
He is (probably) the strongest because he is satori gojo because if he wasnt from the gojo clan he wouldnt have six eyes and limitless ( thats just my opinnion if you have a different opinnion tell me!)
Nah he is Gojo satoru thats why he is the strongest there were other six eyes and limitless users in the oast but no one was Gojo he was on another level and was like a God just like Sukuna...

Whoa whoa Gojo is a representation of Siddartha Gautama , the first Buddha...
Now you're completely right but it's the cost of having power
Now it is buddhist scripture that Gojo quotes but ... this scripture is thought to be sort of propaganda likening Buddha to a god which he isn't
And Siddartha would never say such an arrogant thing
So Gojo saying his when he was 18 years old , that he is the honored one is not a true enlightenment
It actually only served as an extension of his ego
Siddartha Gautama doesn't renounce his kingdom and go on to seek enlightenment when he was 29 years old
Gojos bday is December 6
I believe Gojo with time not moving in the prison realm
He barely turned 29 before he fought Sekuna
Siddartha not only renounced kingdom - he saw 4 things that represented mortality
Gojo has seen these four things
1.an old man with a cane -age taking life
Gojo sees this with tengen who has lost her humanity from her consciousness living so long
2. A sick person- life taken by illness
Gojo saw this through yuta okkutsu
3.an ascetic monk- life taken by discipline
Gojo saw this in the actions and fear of the higher ups
4, finally dead people - death comes for everyone
Hmm the shibuya incident. Nuff said
So Gojo is now 29 and has seen the 4 things
Gege showed that after Saturos fight with Sekuna that he was completely humbled
To start toward something Gojo has never had
Humility and balance
Also Gojos time in the prison realm is much like Siddartha sitting under the ficus tree.
Contemplating till he reached enlightenment
Gojo thought he won bro, he died tho that why the smile was left there gojo never thought he lose
Ikr
Take a shot every time he says "Love"
Why does mappa lore go so far???
Gojo 😭
Nice analysis.
Imma just say, Me personally? I would NEVER EVER let a racist/supremacist with an inferiority/superiority complex ever imply jack shit about me.
But that's just me 🤷🏽♀️.
Geto acted like he also didn't experience something life-changing alongside his "best friend." I always found it odd that, rather than connecting and battling this with his friend, he just veered into this sad and regressive thinking. Geto asked that question to belittle Gojo, because I recall he said he wanted his power for his own plans.
I'll add this. I wished Gojo did what Yuki did. Travel. Meet people. Reach "down," do everything to feel others. I think to a degree, he tries, which is why he never turned as abysmally evil as his "best friend." His students love him so much.
I'll vehemently disagree that JJK seems to be solely about the degree of strength too. Geto literally impacts Gojo through words... not some big city collapsing battle. I think JJK is about... checking yourself. Understand you don't and won't ever possess neither the knowledge nor the strength of the universe. It's okay to lose, to make mistakes, to evolve, and so on. You know... to be human? Yuki definitely understood that and even tried passing it onto others (especially Choso).
I can tell the angry nerds won't like this...
I on the other hand, am sure I agree without even needing to watch. But watch I will
Last thing the allegory of the Buddha birth ...
Walking 7 steps north and proclaiming ... you know
Is not accepted by most Buddhists teaching
As Siddartha Guantama would never say such an arrogant thing
As any Buddha is humble in nature
So it was followers liking Buddha to a god
Which goes against Buddhist teaching
As Siddartha didn't renounce his kingdom and seek enlightenment till he was 29
Do I doubt gehe kills Gojo rift before he turns 29 his enlightenment was in the prison realm like under the ficus tree
And enlightenment was given to him by the demon lord that tempted him
This happens to Siddartha
His fight w Sekuna led to enlightenment
Toji was his exhaustion and delirium as alone he could never reach nirvana
Becoming indistinguishable from a drop in the ocean

Will you go to Heaven when you die? Here’s a quick test: Have you ever lied, stolen, or used God’s name in vain? Jesus said, whoever looks with lust has already committed adultery in their heart. If you have done these things, God sees you as a lying, thieving, blasphemous, adulterer at heart, and the Bible warns that one day God will punish you in a terrible place called Hell. But God is not willing that any should perish. Sinners broke God’s Law and Jesus paid their fine. This means that God can legally dismiss their case: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Then Jesus rose from the dead, defeating death. Today, repent and trust Jesus, and God will give you eternal life as a free gift. Then read the Bible daily and obey it. God will never fail you.
