My dad had a woodmizzer mill much like the one you’re using and I can relate to what you said. You can hear it when the blade hits metal and if it hurts the blade bad enough the blade will dig deep and take you out of level. It’s hard work but I use to enjoy it. Sawing , throwing slabs, staking lumber, and you even reminded me of filling the cooling reservoir on top. Thanks for the memories.

i am not an expert in any way. i had a job in a precision work holding machine shop and we cut 4 inch steel with a grob bandsaw with an air powered feed. it had a air sprayed liquid coolant and lubrication system.
dry cutting and dull blades caused heat and as emerald said trouble with a capital T like mister T. though i am mid sixties or slightly north of midpoint. i was as young as miss emerald. i was a greenhorn. and my boss was as old as my mom so that made him about 21 years older as some would say almost a generation gap which is about 25 years. my departed boss was hermann a german born american who served valiantly in the official korean war 1950-1953. though our cold war has lasted through today. there is some connection that i still am researching. my departed dad served in the royal dutch military as a private first class foot soldier in the commando corp. he went in for his mandatory one year conscripted service to the dutch queen Juliana in 1952-1953. dad like most veterans know that war is hell. most will not talk about it unless specifically asked. and those who brag about have severe mental and disrespect issues that we see in all the mass shootings.
taking a human life for any reason breaks the 6th of the 10 commandments. thou shall not kill. i need to add that it is human life. as humans kill some plants and animals for food. taking a human life even in self defense causes severe cases of hidden and unhidden post traumatic stress disorder. and sometimes it takes time to understand and that is after they pass on.
the boss man had a difficult time a while with someone taking their own life. and i have empathy for the boss mans feeling. we as humans have a lot to learn about what is life and what is n ot life and ptsd.
i better stop on my soap box tangential. thoughts . i trust in god like the boss man. death is final for life on this earth. it happens senselessly in war, murder, mass or individual shootings, knifing,, poisoning suicide and only god knows what other ways. like boss man i would love to know how to prevent senseless death. i know god knows and we would love to know. for the dead it is to late and we have to try to heal and with god's guidance we can prolong the life of someone on the road to dead. we all are on a road to death. no one gets out of life on earth alive unless we blast off to the moon. oops neil armstrong who put his boot prints on the moon came back to earth before god called him to home called eternity. yet allen buzz light year is still alive to tell a story or two for now. today may 12, 2023.
and from a guy who can never be a mother. happy mothers day to my mom where ever you maybe. stay alive until god calls you. and when god calls you will be reunited with daddy and your first born american son who got his angel wings in 2021. say hello to my life partner my wife of 20 years she got her angel wings on 9-11-2019 at 8:10 am due to a black widower bite that went all wrong. i am at peace that god took her home. now is time for me to heal and carry on for the rest of my live. i love you mom. i really do. you had my fetus state in your womb until it was time for me to breathe earth air by myself. you feed me mother's milk on tap from your breasts. you raised me right. love you with every beat of my heart. i still love you more will all my heart and mortal soul. happy mothers day to my mom and all mothers and everyone because we all had mothers.

Retired saw filer here. Right on. The worst are glass insulators. The saw usually takes a dive and blows up. Sometimes you would saw right through a bullet and keep on sawing. The best object I ever saw was a double bitted axe that the saw hit where the axe handle used to be and filled the hole with as many saw tips as you could cram in there.

I found ceramic electric fence insulators in a dead black locust tree one time. They were totally grown over with bark, & actually inside the tree. ceramic is usually harder than steel, & my chain did not play well with them. I guess that some old time farmer didn't feel like setting fence posts, & just ran his wire between trees growing in the approximate area he wanted to cordon off.

Now, back when there were manufacturing plants all across America a man could actually earn a decent living sharpening drills, end mills, and saw blades. Sadly, those days are behind us and will not return until it becomes impractical to transport goods from foreign countries.

Emerald, I definitely heard that. I do fine woodworking with a bandsaw, but I buy from good hardwood dealers. I have never hit a nail because they carefully control their incoming wood. However, when cutting firewood I have definitely hit nails with my chainsaw. It sucks when it happens. Not so much of a waste when your shortest chainsaw hits it, but when my 4' chainsaw hits it and the chain cannot be reasonably be sharpened, I am pissed. Most of the time you can notice it from the noise and sparks, but sometimes you don't. Since this incident with a chainsaw, I am careful about accepting "free" wood to cut when the person tells me there used to be a barbed wire fence or tree fort in the tree I am cutting.

What do you do after you’ve cut a nail and you can obviously see there is more nail penetrating an unknown depth into the uncut wood? Some nails can have a 3.5-4 inch shank…do you somehow remove the remaining metal or cut a 4 x 4 or 6 x 6 beam or whatever you can from the remaining log?

Did you ever think about getting a couple metal detectors not like the ones they use in the airport but like the ones at the beachcombers use that you can scandi login as it's on the lower lift.. also they make a small handheld one.. weirdest people scared some of the ones that I've seen on RUclips and I as well as on TV just scan through rocks and stuff so you should be okay there because it should scan through your log... That might eliminate some of your problem there .. just a suggestion you put out good video so have a nice day take care .. God bless you and your family

I built my sawmill myself and I have cut threw up to a 3/8" lag bolt and the damage to the blade was awful to say the least. It can take so much of the profit margin out of the equation after cutting lumber like that

I am surprised that no one has thought to put a metal detecting sensor head on the sawmill that will automatically stop the mill when metal is detected. Even using the wand that the TSA uses would probably help.

Photo bombed by a bumble bee @6:40 !
We do a quick check with a metal detector before any milling. The savings in time and blade sharpening / replacement outweighs the cost of a decent detector and the 3 or 4 minutes it takes to check the logs before the cut.
On big logs we cant-hook 'em over 1/4 turns and check each quarter. Depends on the quality of your detector and how deep it'll go. Even a cheap one from B_g5 sporting goods will do a decent job and find almost, if not all the buried nastiness.

Yes I heard the blade clip the metal at about 3.43 and later on I observed a ginormous bee circling the mill It looked huge. Thanks Jade & Emerald for the excellent and informative video, have a great weekend and don't let the bees attack and carry you away...lol
Looking foreword to the Sunday recap!

Looked like a carpenter bee(or Wood Bee), to me. They attack wood buildings like the sawmill eaves.

I wonder if you could use a metal saw blade when you know you are going to be cutting through metal. It might mean slower cutting, but at least it wouldn't be destroying a blade. And: What about removing the metal? EX: If it's a nail, and you find it with your metal detector, can you drill it out? Maybe with a core drill that cuts the wood all around the metal and comes out like taking a core sample. Just thinking out loud. ben/ michigan

The nails you hit at 3:45, look to be square or rectangular not round nails. What did they look like to you? If rectangular, they were cut nails made of hardened steel to be used in concrete other solid materials. Hitting 2 common nails like a 16 penny nail wouldn't do that kind of damage to your blade. Love your videos.

I’ve not hit any metal yet but my mill is pretty new, I’m sure I’ll find some soon.
