I did this last summer with 40 yards of compost and a dozen large bags of perlite. Next time try a backhoe or excavator instead of trying to scoop and drop, at least for the first bit. In less than 5 minutes, probably 2 minutes, I had a 20 yard pile ready to fill some raised beds. Just use the bucket and dipper to stir the pile like you would a cup of coffee. It works surprisingly well and quickly.
I love your shorts, paired with that trowel you keep sheathed upon your hip. It gives your landscaping supply video a very Ursula Andress feel from 'Dr. No'.
Sawdust and chips + perlite volcanic rock + seaweed + fish bone meal + green sand = Lumber Capital Log Yard potting soil is like a Hawaiian vacation sushi dinner for your garden!🏖
You don't want to mix sawdust and wood chips into plant soil. It leeches all the nitrogen as it decays. Put a few inches of it at the bottom of whatever you're filling with soil (I like to add a little organic fertilizer that comes with healthy bacteria and fungi that helps to decompose it), then add whatever soil you're using, with any organic material in it already composted, plus a few earthworms. Your plants will do great and the following year the sawdust and chips will have mostly decomposed. Whatever hasn't goes in the bottom of next year's planters.
Lov to watch u work. If u had a tremmel similar to th mining shows, it may help mix th soil ingredients as u add them. Just a thot. Keep up th good work! Very informative. Thankyou
Right. I was thinking the same, like a farm feed mixer that you pull around behind a tractor. The pto turns the mixer in side and open the side and the potting soil would come out mixed
I think the world would be a better place if there were more seaweed farmers. I can be used for SO MANY things and it grows much much faster than many other organic products that seaweeds can replace.
If green sand is in short supply, try using some agricultural gypsum. It also helps break down clay too such that it becomes porus rather than acting to pool-up the water atop it.
When I used to mix sand and calcium chloride/ road salt with a loader at the highways yard, I used to hoist the bucket high as I found the drop would distribute the m8xture more evenly and quicker.
Little suggestion: (If you have the space), pull the compost away from the back wall of the bin 6 or so feet, back drag it to make a flat even area of compost at a consistent depth, then spread the amendments across the whole top as even as you can, then start pushing it back bucket by bucket, lifting the bucket up high and shake the bucket as you dump it. It will be more evenly mixed by the time it is against the back wall of the bin. I too mix hundreds of yards of sand and road salt in the winter, and loam compost mix for starting new lawns in spring and summer. Have fun!!👍
You got sunshine and your shorts and strapy top on , and here in the UK we have all got our winter coats on as we have wind rain sleet, hail and snow, I wish summer would hurry up,,,!!
Great information ladies. I live in north central Washington state 60 miles from the Canadian line. Bought a house in town but the soil is Rocky have several raised garden beds and if close I would purchase bulk of the soil. Also we have very little hardwoods here and I do woodworking so your hardwood would be. Remodeling a 1920s house. Very expensive as the closet is California or shipped here. Does rain much here as this is the east side of the cascades. 10000s acres of apples, pears and soft fruits. Every thing is harvested green for shipping, no tast.
I use play sand, and the bone meal. I do this for my tomatoes and my cannabis plants. The sand keeps the soil, separated so all of the water and nutrients flow down to the roots.
Another job well done ladies! If I lived closer i'd surely buy some of that potting soil! Keep up the great work, and thanks for sharing your adventures with us. Have a great evening! TTFN
Look up "Coot's mix" and Clackamas Coot. That guy can teach anyone to make better organic soil, and where to source amendments so you pay less for shipping. He also teaches people to farm their own worms for compost and worm castings. Properly fed worms make such good castings that you don't need much else, it's all in the poo. Coot's mix grows amazing plants!
I used to add worm castings in my soil as well with everything you shown. The plants will thank ya. Then while growing, some stuff called liquid karma from botanicare. It was basically liquid bat poop. 🤪👍
Hi Emerald and the person behind the camera, since you are using nematodes another great thing to add to your production might be a worm farm. Properly setup it can produce a liquid that is the perfect food for lawns, gardens and growing beds. A friend started small and over a few years filled his garage with a system that produces 20 gallons a day. He used it on his dry barren lawn and it now looks lush and has survived severe winter weather. He also bottles the liquid to sell. It can be mixed with water and sprayed. Commercial product is available and can cost a bit. Of course the alternative is to become a reseller of such products helping to expand and supplement your business. Anyway glad the weather is warmer for you, and nice to see you enjoying the sun, and you are correct seaweed is good for humans.🙂🌻🌻
PA has a lot of dairy farming in it. Get yourself a Keneen mixer wagon and without working scales it costs 2500 with a capacity of 9 yards. Workks best with dry or damp but not wet materials
Ok, so I think she was thinking of vermiculite when she said it was a mined volcanic rock. Perlite is in fact volcanic glass that is superheated until it pops like popcorn, making it much less dense and lighter as a result. The advantage of perlite over pea gravel or something similar is that the lightness makes soil compaction less likely.
Great video, I love the product you've made here. Watch out when dumping perlite, you really don't want to be breathing that dust if you can help it. Either wet the perlite or wear a mask and give it a spray after dumping it. Keep up the good work on this project!

Most of the Greensand is mined close to where I snowbird summer, in BC. Was wondering why you didn't add some of the charcoal fines, would be a selling feature the black soil. I burn a big pit of char and it gets layered in my compost pile and sure does make a great black garden soil.
The conveyor used to load the firewood truck and trailer, if moved to the compost area, could be used as well. Dump a loader bucket of soil, etc. on the input end, and let the conveyor do the work of dumping it on the top of the pile, mixing it at the same time. Just a thought. 🤔
It seemed like Roxie was thinking of “adding to the mix”…..😂
Helping with the premixing process 😂
