I started on a 50 then went to 35 and enjoyed it more. I'm waiting for this lens to arrive, and if I enjoy it more than my 35 GM I'll be happily impressed.
Best made review of this lens yet. Have to totally restart gathering a kit, for personal use as a baby is comming. Was thinkering between samyang 45 vs 24 1.8 . This made me decide on the 24. Thank you, I'll keep on following you.
How's the chromatic aberration performance on your copy? If I take a picture similar to yours at 1:30 the purple fringing is very strong wide open. I'm wondering whether I got a bad copy...
Hello, this picture was shot on a rather cloudy day - I barely notice the CA on this lens to be honest. On more sunny environments/brighter backgrounds there is some little CA visible but nothing serious and very easy to remove in post. If you experience heavy chromatic abberation there might be some issue with the lens(maybe some shift within the tubus?) - def worth to check it with your local supplier/service.
@@DigitalRetro thanks mate! Trees against a cloudy sky is CA on steroids with my lens. I'll take some pictures tomorrow morning again and if my opinion remains I'll let someone have a look at it at the local shop in the afternoon. Thanks!
Thanks for the video. This lens is very sharp. I've compared to the 24GM and it is almost as sharp (but not quite), and, of course, the rendering of the GM is better. Curiously, the focal length seems to be about 25/26mm rather than 24mm.
Cant decide between this 24mm lens or the sigma 30mm. I will only be able to buy one lens for a while. Would both focal lengths be useful both indoors and for street photography/casual everyday shooting? Or does one have an advantage?
If your considering this or the Sony 20mm 1.8 I'd say go for both. I did. The 4mm makes a big difference and they are both worth it. Dont get the 24mm GM though. This Samyang is better than the GM.
I’m looking to buy my first ff lens for Sony a7c I bought the sigma 28-70 2.8 but the don’t have any stock so the will return the money and maybe I was thinking on 2 Samyangs 1.8, the first the 24mm but the second I don’t know if 75mm will be great maybe for portraits of concert photography at small venues, the 24mm is my jam at filming guitar play though at my small room. What do you think ? 🤔
The 24 1.8 is a good choice for video - this lens is really good especially now after firmware updates(and if you plan to use it with A7c which has good AF as well.). I`d considert the 75 however - I suggest you take the 85 1.8 from Sony. The price difference is not big now, and the 85`s build quality and image quality is really good. I`ve had this lens on my A7II and it performed flawlessly(especially on the flawed A7ii AF :)
Is the focus hunting seen in the video footage normal for this lens? Auto focus issues are the only reason I've ever gotten rid of a third party lens...
Which hunting do you have in mind? If you think about the beginning of the video at 0:50 - this is not Samyang 24mm - it`s the 35mm lens by Sony I`m talking about - the hunting was due to shutter pressing, so it was intentional. I didn`t encounter any hunting that was an issue for me with the Samyang`s 24 1.8 - of course it has some AF issues but keep in mind its a new lens and no FW upgrades are out yet.
@@DigitalRetro Yes, it was the hunting at around the :57 mark I was referring too. So you're saying it has AF issues, but not hunting like seen in the video? Thanks!
@@evrythingis1 yep I was testing it with A7ii and the AF was fine regarding the archaic focus of this body - I guess when put on something like a7iii it’s a charm ✨
I would be too! The 24 is great for both landscape, astro and video in my opinion, but 35mm is more versatile for me as I shoot portraits with it too. 35mm is also good for video. Luckly if you are on a tight budget you can get 24 and 35 from samyang for almost the price of Sony`s 35 1.8 lens. Not to mention they are so compact to have both in tiny camera bag.

35 is great. I really like it but I use my 24mm for travel so much more. Its probably my favorite focal length. In all honesty 25, 28, and 35 is good for travel.
Hello! Currently I use the A7II for video, so I don`t have the ability to record in 4K. Hopefully in the near future i`ll get A7C and will do 4K videos. I like the 1080p mood tho!
@@DigitalRetro I have had the SONY A 7C for a few days and I am very happy but for me the 1080 is dead, when you try the 4K you will no longer lose quality
In terms of actual image results, Tony Northrup would add crop-factor the aperture to can a full frame equivalent (don't argue with me - he's shown content to support his theory). By his method a Viltrox 23mm F1.4 would produce a 24.5mm F2.1 full frame equivalent image. The Samyang 24mm F/1.8 on a full frame would give you more light than the Viltrox on a crop sensor.
Agreed - but honestly i neved tried to make the crop factor apeture equivalency as I hate comparing FF and APS-C in terms of light capability. I rather make the frame factor to compare the actual fov`s of focal lenghts on these two.
@@DigitalRetro Wish manufacturer's would state this. I find it misleading. Speedboosters/focal reducers make people think they are getting insane aperture, when its really just approximating the full frame equivalent, not exceeding it. Even the famous Sigma 18-35 F/1.8 is actually just an F2.8 equivalent on a crop sensor in terms of light gathering. BTW - I think the Samyang 24mm F1.8 is a wicked value. Sweet spot for value/performance.
@@User_not_found_403 well manufacturers is one thing - but the other side(more misleading in my opinion) are many youtubers and self proclaimed photography masters that say that you dont need FF cause APS-C can equal it in performance, etc. I own both FF and APS-C and I would never say something like that. FF is just another league in terms of light to sensor performance(just like comparing FF to Medium format). It`s pure physics. The image quality, the depth of focus and light performance will always differ. No argue here.
F1.8 is always F1.8 in terms of light transmission 😂 it’s a physical property of the lens diaphragm. The depth of field is what changes. The crop also applies to effective field of view.
@@bradl2636 Well, if you want to go down that route, isn't F-stop just a measure of the aperture (hole size)? - just an estimate of light transmission, not what actually hits the sensor which would be t-stop. I care more about the outcome, so "effectively" to get an equivalent image I included it in my calculations. I ran the tests myself to compare instead of just depending on hypothesis. Seems to work for me, but you do you.
Well I didn’t compare the two. GM is like 3x the price of Samyang so it’s definitely sharper and brighter with its 1.4. Buuut, I did compare it with Sigma 24 1.4 for a while and I gotta say Sigma is not worth the extra money, weight and size. Both GM and Sigma are huge compared to Samyang which is almost a pocket lens and the 1.8 is not a dealbreaker for me.
@@DigitalRetro okay thank you! Regarding the weight I wouldn’t go with the sigma so that’s not on my list anyways though it’s a nice lens what I’ve heard! So i might also go with the Samyang as the GM is just to expressive haha
I wanted to keep my GM bc I thought more expensive is better. The only positive about the gm is better build quality. Other than that the Samyang destroys it in every way. I had to return the gm. It made no nsense to keep it
Hey man, I wouldn`t suggest 24mm for estate shooting - it`s too tight IMO. I`d definitely go for something like 18mm or even Samyang`s 14mm 2.8 FE lens. Another great versatile option is the Tamron 17-28 f2.8 - it`s got real nice quality image and is of course, a zoom lens.
