Maximillian truly is one of the best designed evil robots in cinema history. He doesn't even need to say a word, his menacing red eye beam, his shape, the fact he hovers towards you means he can come at you from any direction. And of course don't forget that evil humming noise he emits, likely meaning if you hear it, you're already doomed!
In the scene where Captain Dan Holland (Robert Forrester) sees the "Humanoid Robot Funeral " Maximilian sneaks up on him and just after the dead Humanoid is shot out into space (and the black hole) opens the door rapidly. When I first saw that scene, I thought that Dan was dead. " Must have made a wrong turn, Max". I thought Maximilian would either shoot him down or killed him with the blades like he did to Alex later in the film.
I first watched The Black Hole years ago, but just recently I’ve discovered how passionate the fan base is and how thoughtful people’s opinions are on the film & it’s themes. I recently got the Diamond Select action figures and it inspired me to go back on RUclips and re-watch some scenes and other videos, every comment section is full of passionate fans. Great stuff! Maximilian is one of the best movie robot designs ever.
Nice video. You know, a thought just hit me. If it hadn't been for the Hell scene in The Black Hole we might have never had the concept of Hell in space, like in the Doom videogame series or the movie Event Horizon. As rushed as the ending was, it planted the seeds of a great sci-fi horror concept.
That's why I made this track. Maximilian is my favorite 1970's science fiction slasher villain. He not only chooses to murder Anthony Perkins by shredding him to a pulp with his shredding arm extentions, while he also could have chosen to just shoot him with his lasers, which we learn later that he has. He also ignores the cries for help of Dr Reinhard, dying under some rubble. And at the (incomprehensible) end of the movie, he is basically Satan. The Robot Devil! Hail, Maximilian!
I see Max as a security guard standing against things we must never know, poor Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) paid the price for this. I see Max as standing guardian over shit we can't know...and if we look too hard, we end up like Anthony! Be warned, Maximilian is watching!!
Cool music. Max is such an awesome robot, would love to see a non Disneyfied version of the Black Hole some day. If B.O.B. and V.I.N.cent had been less 'lovable', this film would be taken much more seriously as a decent Sci fi today.
+SID KNIGHT Thank you very much! That is actually a great compliment, and it means a lot to me - > not just "liking" it, or saying "it's good", but to actually describe a physical reaction ("gave me chills"). Makes me feel "mission accomplished" :)
Ohh wow!! I came to your channel looking for a tutorial on how to program the arpeggiator on the Korg Kross and look what I found!!! I went to the cinema to watch this as a 6yr old, and ended up totally obsessed with it. I had a few action figures - Vincent, Maximillian, Kate, Captain Holland and Dr Durant. No idea where they got to, probably sitting in my mum's loft, bet they're worth a canny fortune now. Think I'll send my elderly mother into her loft & not let her down until she finds all my figures lol (joke!). And all my Star Wars ones that have vanished. I love how you put this together and noticed you included the sound of Dr Durant being shredded to death, absolutely terrified me as a child. Pretty scary & dark for a Disney film. Anyway I did find your arp tutorial, thanks for that. I just keep coming back to watch this! Great job.
Thank you very much! As a kid, I absolutely hated that movie, mostly because of f*cking Vincent and Bob. They were so STUPID! As an adult, I at least understand WHY they put these characters in there (for the kids, of course), but I always loved Maximilian.
Synthesaurus Rex: Well done. Thank you for making this. I saw "The Black Hole" when it originally showed in cinemas in 1979. I was 6 years old. This film has an excellent score. Good job creating your own music for this tribute. Hello from Tucson, Arizona, USA.
Well, Hi Jeff from Tuscon! I'm always happy when people on the other side of the planet notice my stuff! I saw it too back then on the big screen, as a kid. And I hated it. Today, I still think it's a pathetic attempt at cashing-in on the Star-Wars-craze by Disney, but I still do love some elements of the movie: the music, the basic idea ("what caused that cause?"), Maximilian Schell's acting and accent, and of course, Maximilian, the psycho-killer robot. :)
You know, this film always gave me the chills with the empty hallways, not from the gruesome killing, but from the absence of other people and the suspicion that it aroused. The music by John Barry added to that as well. Good beat and music video mate!
@SynthesaurusRex , its an action rpg by Square Enix where you explore the world's of disney franchise and try to save them from dark entities, you get teammates mostly made up of donald and goofy, but can sometimes have a resident of the world you're in like Ariel or Stitch. And then there are characters you summon for a special attack who you never really interact with, aside from Simba, stitch, and Mooshu who first appear as summons in the first game and then you actually interact fully in the sequel.
That you even know Saturn 3 and Hector is an impressive feet. I think Max wins it going away. He's armored, he's armed, he's mobile in three dimensions, and he's coldly calculating and evil. Hector is admittedly psychotic, but far more easily injured/destroyed and far more limited.
+Eric Hinkle Same here, as a kid. Rightfully so: Max IS the best psycho-killer-robot until this very day ever in a movie, no matter how mediocre the movie is. Get a bit closer to the screen, Eric, because I will now whisper to you something I haven't even told my closest friends, but please promise, you will keep that to you. Ready? Here it goes: I find Max much MUCH scarier that Darth Vader! :)
Maximillian was a pretty ominous character, no doubt about it. The fact that's he's completely mute just adds to his intimidation factor. I loved his movie as a child although it is full of scientific errors.
Loved him since i was 7... Just got an unopened 1979 11" model kit. A friend is going to CAD and rectreate all the parts ona 3D printer so we can get him up to about 2-3ft high, then age painted. Will add pics when we're done :)
Isn't it? It's a way of saying that Maximilian is the evil side of Dr. Reinhard, by naming he robot after his master's real name. Also: It turns out, that Reinhard is not Maxi's master anymore, but his evil side being out of his control. That's all pretty complex and dark for a Disney-movie. It's a shame that they try to make a Star-Wars-thing out of it.
keepshow keeper so what was with the ending ? i never really understood it like they are one now ? or hes trapped in his own creation ? idk wth but this movie scarred me for life lol :-(
blacksupra001 You're not the only one. I think they tried to give the movie a deeper meaning at the end like in Space Odyssey 2001. Which absolutely doesn't work for The Black Hole because the movie was obvioulsy made for kids. Or to be more acurate: they actually couldn't decide if they made their movie for kids (corny robots) or adults (guy gets slaughtered, zombies, this ending).
blacksupra001, I'm fairly sure that what we'd seen was a look into Hell; specifically, Reinheart's Hell. For a man that must remain in control over everything in his life, including his ship and his crew, being forced to spend eternity as a robot with no will of its own is effectively the most fitting punishment for someone who had done the same to others (specifically the aforementioned crew.) This idea is supported by the hellish scenery surrounding Reinheart and the subsequent trip through a heavenly area with angel-like beings within. As for how this relates to our heroes traveling on the probe ship, I believe that their trip through the black hole had brought them to the edge of death, causing them to experience these scenes in a near-death experience just prior to their exiting the singularity on the other side. But hey, it;s just a theory.

i'll sound weird for saying this but i actually hope disney does a remake of this movie there is improved special effects new actors, and there is pontenial in this movie that just didn't work at the time. and like the cinema snob once said if you're gonna do a remake remake something bad, at least if it's bad you can improve it. besides i imagine a remake of the black hole won't be the worst thing disney ever makes *cough* mars needs moms *cough* maleficent *cough* monsters university *cough* *cough*.
This doesn't sound weird at all. I totally agree with you and the snob: The Black Hole is PERFECT for a remake. And as long as they put some creative, dedicated people with good ideas on it, nobody cares where the production money comes from. As long as it's not some soulless crap like so many other failed reboots that nobody asked for (Robocop, Conan) I am all for remaking it. And PLEASE DON'T change the character of Maximilian! changvasejarik62 Oh yeah! This time SHOW how Maximilian shredders Dr. Durant to death with gore & guts flying around! Oh well. I guess they can't do that in a disney-movie. I'm sad now :-(
While I'd also like to see a good modern remake of TBH (and I think for the most part it fits with the "remake bad movies" idea), in one sense there already was a remake (or more properly, a semi-sequel) -- "Event Horizon". Google it, that movie's creators were thinking in the direction of "what would happen after The Black Hole?" It has a huge experimental ship coming back from a test of essentially a black-hole drive, and we find that basically it passed through hell. (a la the ending of Dr. Reinhardt here). But I'd hope that with our increased knowledge of black hole physics since the 70's (though we still don't have a full understanding without quantum gravity), and possibilities of advanced computer simulation of the equations of general relativity, we could make a much cooler movie. But who could possibly replace Schell's gravitas (and accent)? Somehow I can't help but imagine the Cygnus II being commanded by an evil Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson.
Rheinhard Event Horizon? One word: ballpen. The drifting ballpen in zero gravitiy. Terrible CGI for a simple thing they already did 30 years earlier as a perfect practical effect in Space Odyssey. Maximilian (the robot) was pure evil. I've just rewatched The Black Hole for the first time in 40 years and that damn robot still scares me lol

The seeds of making people fall in love with robots so you can be a machine and work on them, too...wonder how well it worked...

I wonder who would win in a Killer Robot showdown between Maximilian and Hector from Saturn 3.
That you even know Saturn 3 and Hector is an impressive feet. I think Max wins it going away. He's armored, he's armed, he's mobile in three dimensions, and he's coldly calculating and evil. Hector is admittedly psychotic, but far more easily injured/destroyed and far more limited.
My favourite were the 3 robots from silent running. Huey, Dewey and louie.
Saturn 3 is an absolute classic that doesn’t get the recognition it deserves
Hal 500 would sort em both out😅
I generally don't like the idea of putting music in an established production- but in this case, it's pretty cool.

Black Hole is, basically, Shakespeare's The Tempest...in Space! Maximilian is Caliban.
Are we supposed to like the movie more ... or less, now that we know it just copied motifs from ancient classics?

Dante's Hell from "La Divina Commedia"!
