The Black Hole - Space Sequences Tribute

- A Spaceship Model and vintage SFX Tribute. All Spacescenes from the Movie are cut in full length together. 7:22 Min. They're ALMOST all in chronological order. (i only flipped the Palomino drifting into the Black Hole at the beginning) All Space Scenes in one row ;). And remember: NO Computergraphics back then. All was handmade. For instance the nozzle exhausts are all drawn by hand!
Update: April 2011. Quote Wiki: "In November 2009, it was reported that Disney has plans to remake the movie. Director Joseph Kosinski and producer Sean Bailey are attached to the production. In the Disney film Tron: Legacy, a poster for The Black Hole can be seen in the bedroom of Sam Flynn in 1989. An action figure of the robot old B.O.B. can be seen next to the Tron action figures on his shelf."
They did a great job making it seem like a sinking ship at sea.
How is this ship not in all the starship size comparisons on youtube when she was more than a mile long? On top that she looks like a cathedral in space!
Almost like … The Event Horizon!
There's a certain comfort in seeing RUclips vids you enjoyed a decade ago still up...
Thank you!
Indeed. I remember when I watched this movie as a kid, and only recently got to recall those memories many decades later. This tribute is fitting.
This was such a great sci-fi movie so unexpectedly on Disney like. I'm glad after 40 plus years the film is finally getting the credit it deserves I'd love to have a scale model of the cygnus but it's bigger than my house
This music is...amazing.
Wow! John Barry's score still gives me goosebumps over forty years later.
Rest In Peace U.S.S. Cygnus, one of the greatest starships of all time
You will be missed....until the remake is released
@Liam McLaughlin , you're right, they should just reboot its universe.
In regards to the Cygnus lighting-up scene (1:26-1:41). I remember showing the movie to a couple of younger friends years ago who had never seen it before (VHS widescreen version) and they both went "Whoa!" when she lit up. Made me smile. :) The art direction in this movie was really well done. It's a shame they couldn't do more with the plot. A bittersweet movie.
One of the things that hurts the movie is that it had to be a kiddie movie as well as an adults movie.
@@Tommykey07 and it ended up being neither.
We need a version where the cygnus goes in, through and beyond
I saw "The Black Hole" in cinema when I was 14. The title sequence and music were marvelous, and the moment when the lights of the Cygnus were switched on was a real WOW, especially on the big silver screen.
And Maximillian is IMO one of the most impressive movie villains of all times only topped by Darth Vader.
I consider it a classic throwback to Forbidden Planet (1956).
I'm telling you that the soundtrack just pulls you in like it has arms. You are captivated by the whole movie. I loved it from start to finish.🛸🚀🤖👾👽🎥
The Cygnus was a beautiful ship. That meteor scene always freaked me out when I was a kid. I'd love to see a movie, with that model design but with the advancements of a little CGI. CGI is overused, but when added as an enhancer it's nice. I loved that movie.
I love this film when I saw it.
You have such good taste in movies , I loved it, it was like being in a haunted house and you want to get out. 🛸🚀🤖👾👽🤖👾
This was my first VHS tape I owned in my life.
I had won it (don't remember where and how) but had no video player at my home. I think I was 12 or 13 at this time.
The best friends of my parents had one of those rare video players, so 2 of 4 Sundays a month we went visiting them and I had my Black Hole tape with me, and I watched it EVERY TIME after dinner.
What a great time, and of course what a great movie !
The score still gives me chills when I hear it.
This sums up why I hate Computer graphics. These movies were awesome without the glossy hollow CG. Just look at the Cygnus!!The most insulting thing ever to me is the new Battlestar Galactica series. I am glad I got to experience these movies in the 1970's! The music score (John Barry) is marvelous ,very intense!
It is not a fault of computer graphics, its a fault of how they are used. There are many, many, MANY times when computer graphics are used and you don't even notice, because everything blends so seamlessly.
Meanwhile.... there is a lot of horrible, HORRIBLE model work, and poor non-computer visual effects along with it. ... there are even quite a few bad ones in this movie.
If the same people who made the horrible computer graphics you hate so much had used models instead, you would still hate it, because they would still suffer the same problem, and inability to blend fake with real convincingly.
@@k1productions87 actually no............and I would rather see bad models etc like the original Dr. Who.....still more real...but again nothing compares to the asteroid field in empire Strikes back and the opening scene in the first Star Wars( A New Hope).....and no cgi ever will ....
@@Thermionman1970 I beg to differ. There will be times when you will praise a newer movie for its model work, spouting the "CGI sucks" statements... totally not realizing that you were actually watching CGI the entire time.
Its just like how good model work makes you think you were seeing a real object, rather than a model.
Unless you are just wanting pure nostalgia for nostalgia sake,... in which case there is a whole different problem here.
@@RandomNameLastName811 still, even when cgi is used models still do seem more realistic to me, becouse of the simple fact models are material and computer graphics immaterial, so their is a level of realism cgi will never reach
Plus older movies use more camera angles than new movies
CGI can and will be the most realistic Technology ! It can do everything and more that others are not capable of. Old Movie Technology Avengers can say what they want, but CGI is great and is the best !
Highly underrated movie. The scene (looking from Reinharts tower) with the Palermo crashing into the Cygnus was awesome looking.
whole film was good visually but made little sense but back in December 1979 as a 14 year old i was impressed and shocked with that hellish scene at the end where the mad scientist received his ultimate payback.
Palomino
Wonderful movie, and the part with those glowing asteroïds was epic.
I remember when i watche this movie for the first time, i never felt comfortable the sense of threat was always in the air, with the black hole outside and Maximilian and Reinhart on the ship. Many sci fi movies have failed to evoke that sense of dread, the music is wasome and Vincent a BOB were really cool for the efects of the time. I hope that a remake gets made, and hope that the atmosphere and stoty get the upgrade and not turn it into a kiddie film, this is a dark film PG-13 to do it just
That movie and the music (John Barry - the composer who made James Bond theme become a household name) brings back childhood memories. Thanks 4 upload^_^
Wasn't that called Event Horizon? lol
My first really addictive movie ever. John Barry's score is his most underrated. And yes, while the acting is disappointing for the star power involved, Peter Ellenshaw's mattes and model work are absolutely breathtaking.
This is one of the best sci-fi movie I've ever seen. Of course it's not Star Wars, but who care, it has its own creepy storyline. Mad scientist obsessed with the Black Hole turns his crew into mindless zombie robots and builds a monster robot and sentry henchman. Creepy cool instrumentals, it's like a haunted house in space.👻🤖 Metalape, you did wonderful job on this tribute piece for the Black Hole. For all of us 💖 who have good taste in sci-fi movies. Thank you so much.🤖🍿🚀🚀🚀
Thank you! It was 14 Years ago i edited and posted this. Unbelievable. I'm a old now.
@@karaokeape
Hey Metal Ape, your only as old as you feel, me, I am 52, but I don't feel it. I refuse to let age catch me. 🕳️🤖🚀🕳️🤖🎭
The Black Hole was gorgeous on the big screen. You can tell Disney pulled out all the stops to try and grab a piece of the Star Wars pie. John Barry s lush and emotive score is still top shelf. Would love to see it in a theater again.
30 years later , we learn much about the real black holes
If this movie is ever remade, DO NOT re-invent the USS CYGNUS! Keep it the same, or with only a few modifications. This is the best movie star ship ever created in my opinion!
FINALLY hubby has the detailed image of the Cygnus's laser cannons he's been hoping to find for years!! THANK-YOU for putting this Tribute up!!!
We can *see* them... now we just need to figure out WHERE they are on the ship! Never have seen any detailed 'blueprints' of the Cygnus. Sounds like your hubby is a fellow frustrated model ship builder!
Nothing beats the old SFX imo. They just have a wonderfull feel. 😙
I always thought the special effects in this film were ahead of their time.
personally i would like to see a prequel of this film. Actually showing how Reinhart took over the ship and turned the crew into the humanoids. I think that would be quite good, also showing how he became insane with the power he gained in doing so....
Maximilian Schell (1930-2014). R.I.P. "On MY ship you ASK, Cap'n".
Increase power to maximum...we are going THROUGH!
Maximilian!
Bring us about!
Captain Holland to Reinhardt," Indeed . Please call him (Maximillian) off Doctor." Reinhard to Maximillian "Maximillian. Remember, these are our guests." I loved that scene. Vincent was cool toward Maximillian and Reinhardt.
This was a pretty good movie I must say,and I do like it how Disney was able to make The Black Hole itself look scary and become more red as the U.S.S. Cygnus got much closer to it,making the film become quite dark even for Disney to try to do.
My favourite part is when the swarm of killer cheese puffs hits the ship.
They were to be astroids....but 1970's visual effects who knew.
Don't forget that a piece of insulating foam weighing 1.67 lbs. caused the destruction of the space shuttle Columbia and the loss of her crew. Force equals mass times acceleration.
Absolutely loved this movie at 6 and this foreboding music brought back memories of a dark creepy space flick that I'm kinda surprised Disney made back then. I get chills when she lights up. Perfect music.
The theme music would not have been out of place in a Bond film.
@@jnichols3 It is actually not out of place. John Barry composed it. And he composed a lot of the Bond Movie Soundtracks too. Unforgotten!
Agreed on the music- especially when the ships lights came on.
@Apathetic Noncombatant Yup - Given the size/clarity of TV sets back then, it really was an amazing experience to see visual blockbusters like this, 2001, or Star Wars in the theater. I suppose it's like medieval peasants walking through an immense stain-glass filled cathedral for the first time and having a cathartic experience. You could argue that seeing 3D Avatar on a bigger Imax screen is even more immersive, but in a world where kids have grown up with huge 4K TVs, Oculus VR, or high-end PC games, it's just not as special. As GenX'rs, I think we were lucky to have witnessed the analog to digital shift and can more appreciate the tech available today. I still play PC games on a big TV and build/fly FPV micro drones, which I wish were available when I was young.
I did love the analysis of him in the movie. He is walking a tightrope between genius and insanity. He is incredibly charismatc and a natural leader, so I think it would be a good character study as his paranoia and overall desire for greatness destroyed him. And then finally as succums to all individuals who gain great power, total isolation from all that is real. If there were to be a remake, some of this backstory could be seen in flashback, when BOB is explaining the histroy of the ship.
For all the rest of the cheesiness in this movie, 5:12 in my opinion is one of the best exterior ship explosions ever put on film even up to this day. The scale, hazy loss of atmosphere, speed, everything is just perfect.
I so LOVE this movie - seen it a gazillion and 1 times.
I scoured the music shops til I found the DVD and NOW I get to see it when ever I like.
My kids HATE it! They have NO taste!
This movie was underrated. It came out when a slew of Star Wars clones did, so naturally it caught some flak for being influenced by SW. & Yes, there is no sound in space. Yes, there's no atmosphere in space. It was slow & ponderous in some places. It was still a passably good piece of cinematography, a bit like " 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea " meets " Star Trek ", " Star Wars " & maybe " Lost in Space ".
yes ,..especially the scene where teh palamino begins to tumble after being caught in the gravatational pull from he back hole,.. very realistic and quite well recearched
Thanx John Barry for this masterpiece! I saw this movie as a child 1980 and the scenes was amazing for my little consciousness about the outer space, robotic, friend or foe, science,... Great work of Disney!
Truly a science fiction classic! The music of this apocalyptic movie is unforgettable!
Nearly 30 years later, still kicks ass! I remember seeing it in the theater when I was 12. Nice video - I need to find the soundrack somewhere.
The movie that got me into Science Fiction. Doesn't age...
Models almost always look better than CG graphics because model made by HANDS, a HUMAN HANDS. This movie one of the best representative of this.
Look at Cygnus... Giant research ship - so much effort put into this ship, and so many years later he still looks amazing!!!
Robots, tech, all this made by hands. Very good movie, special effects, actors, montage!
Thanks for this video!
P.S.:Sometimes, its like a Star Trek, especially dialogs... I am a Star Trek fan:)
I remade this whole thing using CGI, and yeah, it's no where near as amazing as the original, practical, physical models.
I remember watching this as a kid when it came out and loved it. Last year my son who was 9 or so at the time son it when it was on and I DVRed it. He loved this movie, couldn't get enough of it. He's seen a few of the older sci-fi films, this Forbidden Planet and loves every one of them. There's something about those older films, the special effects are not the greatest, but they had great stories, great music and the acting talent was awesome.
Same here Movies from our time stimulated the imagination
Loved this movie....saw it on the big screen when I was 9
Dear Lord... I watched this at a DRIVE IN MOVIE THEATER when it came out!
None of the Sci-Fi movies from nowadays can compare with the ones from that decade. They had a way better atmosphere. Especially this movie here is such an awesome classic!!
This was how Disney did it before it became the magic-free greed machine it is today. Masterful model work. Space looked dark and endless... Shout out to the brilliant matte paintings by Peter Ellenshaw. I stared into the darkness... and it was Disney.
What made those shots so beautiful is that they showed space as it was shown to us by the Hubble Space Telescope a decade later.
I remember this movie a lot!!!! Movies like TRON,KRULL,BLADE RUNNER,CONDORMAN,DRAGONsLAYER...was great in that years
God, I thought I was the only one who remembered Condorman...
Glass Palace in Space. Fantastic, not more.
Eveybody exposed to zero pressure atmosphere- still alive
Kevin Pippin there was likely some pressure left due to the artificial gravity.
Interesting Event Horizon has a similar scene.
The theory is that the gravity well will draw in gases from the surrounding space. Kinda hokey, but who knows?
MetalApe: Well done. Thank you for making this video and sharing it with the rest of us. I was 6 years old when I first watched this film in the cinema in 1979. Maximilian is still the most badass robot I've ever seen. Again, nicely done. Also...Maximilian/Reinhardt lives!
Thank you very much! It was 14 Years ago i edited and posted this. Unbelievable. I'm a very old now.
This movie, while kinda hokey, is very underrated when it comes to the SFX (pretty well done for 1979), music and storyline. Thanks for the compilation.
if the script was better worked out, it whould have competed with star wars
@@daanvos194 Star Wars was an action adventure, but The Black Hole was more of a mystery horror than anything.
Man the music is always haunting the first pieces and the 3rd piece all i can see is Reinhart and Maxamillion standing as one overlooking hell.
Victoria, you have good taste in movies and I love how you phrase the statement about Reinhart and Maximilian standing as one overlooking hell. Beautifully put, and he deserved it. 🤖👾👽🚀🛸
I did LIKE this film a lot, I was 10 and was eager to watch something like Star Wars which I naturally adored... It wasn't... but I was magnetized by the gothic structure of this film ( I remember I was so moved by B.O.B droid), still am a fan of this movie and it's soundtrack. Thank you for this clip. RIP Maximillian Schell, Ernest Borgnine, John Barry, Anthony Perkins and Robert Forster
I remember watching this, such a good film to me. I often wonder how the movie makers back then animated the black hole, it looks like it came from a hurricane or whirlpool.
+Osric44 I was told it was done in a large tub filled with a slightly thicker than water liquid. When the drain was opened they were able to get the whirl and the vortex down. They then added color in the liquid, making many numerous takes, to get all the colors. I hope this is true, it's what I was told back when the movie was showing in 1979.
+john Thaerough, besides the opening sequence showing the warping of spacetime, all the special effects are pre-CGI; all optics photography. This movie pretty much rides the line between the old and new eras.
+eeoofantastico, it was actually a huge, cylindrical plexiglass tank filled with paint. They used a propeller at the bottom to get the vortex and VERY powerful lights underneath to shine through the normally opaque fluid.
One of my all time favorite sci-fi films.
The animation of the black hole itself is still impressive to me.
Loved this movie as a kid -- scenes like the ones here are part of the reason why! Great job putting this together.
Thank you! (A little bit late, but you know, better to late than never ;)
@noscwoh1 - IF they do a remake, it should really PLAY UP & I mean AMP up the " haunted ship / haunted mansion " atmosphere that @huntercd mentioned ( even though that wasn't the phrase he or she used ). I thought that the humanoids / cyborgized crew were especially creepy, even more than Maximillian in some ways. In some ways it was creepier than the " ALIENS " movies.
The shape ship in moive was one of the coolest looking space ships made. I could see something like it being built in the near future more then other types of space ship.
Thanks! Its a strange Movie. Not bad, and sometimes not good. But really has some inventive Scenes , Special Effects and Models with great Love and Detail to them.
Anyhow, a Sci-Fi Fan needs to have the Black Hole in his Collection ;)
I like this movie used to see it when i was a kid, i just ordered it on amazon.
Screw interstellar dis the real stuff right here
Thought I was the LAST ONE.. Great video. I play it so loud my wife goes to her daughters house. Thanks, I 💕 IT.
OMG, thank you for your nice comment! All my best whishes to your Wife and You! Makes me happy!💌
gives me goose bumps and makes me want to crap my pants. gives me the feeling that space is just infinitely huge
Great editing work. I love the music, and especially how you managed to link it all together in a whole.
Pretty cool! I wasn't even born when this came out, but the premise seems cool. Like the music, too. Like ready to step into a mental home.
The ship is good, like the wires and all that. I think that ships in Trek are too weird looking, too advanced for human-kind in the 2300s.
Well done!!. Love the movie and the studios approach to these fx shots.. hope the reboot is done soon!
i was really small when I saw this but I was all into space films as a kid. Disneys first and a 3 years later came their ultimate classic Tron.
Very nice audio fade from the main theme into the sound of the docking elevator descending. If a remake of The Black Hole is truly in the works, and Kosinski's and Bailey's names are attached to it, I'll definitely want to see it, as I loved Tron Legacy! I loved seeing the poster and the action figures for The Black Hole in that movie.
Thank you!
MetalApe, if you're truly interested in the Cygnus, try and track down an old issue of Cinefantastique magazine, its got a spectacular painting of the Cygnus on the cover and goes into great detail on the model making process.
Great work by the way.
Me too. CGI is versatile, yes, but the models always looked so much more real (probably because they were real).
I saw this when it came out in a big screen no IMAX back then still holds up 😮
I remember the novelization of the film. Both ships were capable of FTL but beyond calling the Palomino's a "deep drive" that you didn't want to engage too close to "much mass" they never went into detail. Palomino discovered Cygnus by accident. They failed in their primary mission and were about to go home when the black hole got their attention. Cygnus, at 1600 meters long and 400 meters wide, has too much inertia to change direction quickly but maybe has a jump drive like Battlestar Galactica?
It would be cool if Disney built the ship in Orlando as its own theme park.
Great Vid! if they do a remake i hope they dont change the Cygnus what a beautiful Design!
This was my second sci fi film i went to see as a kid when it came out.Needless to say, i fell in love with the movie. Not much in the way of dialogue, but the FX were pretty awesome for it's time.I know have the DVD in my collection...Your work was excellent and a delight to watch.
A great old Disney sci-fi movie with awesome actors, great effects and music by John Berry. One of the first (maybe THE first) sci-fi movies I´d ever saw. I love it ;)
Great Movie for its time !!! I have always found it funny how Walt Disney made this movie.
Saw this movie n Portland, love the music.
(4:25) First generator destroyed by the Palomino crash, leaded to the second (5:31) being overwhelmed by the Black Hole.
Should have boarded the probe ship when he had the chance.
Excellent job, and a beautiful tribute. The upcoming re-make, if it ever gets made, needs four things to guarantee its awesomeness: a theme as hauntingly original as John Barry's, a ship as beautifully different as the Cygnus, hard science all the way through, and Maximillian. Spaghittification a plus. (Vincent optional.)
This movie 🍿🎥 is a classic, I hope they don't make a remake, why do they feel that they have to make a remake of all the classics. I got 😡 mad when they did a remake of " A Nightmare On Elm Street. 😠😤
Had to re-visit this video... Amazing music and visuals, great editing job as well!
This is really an awesome job! Thanks for the cool sequence
That would actually be pretty cool. I'd have to assume Reinhart would have to be kind of subtle and Machiavellian - having to deal with both humans and intuitive AI would require hiding his motives - plans within plans, as it were.
@mangoprojects Another rarely Comment. Thank you so much Mangoprojects. And "YES" ...a lot sweat and hours indeed... nice to know, someone appreciates that! Thats the fate of Montage (Video and Audio)... if its well done, you neither see nor hear it: "ShadowCuts". No one will appreciate 'em ever. Thank YOU for seeing/hearing them! ;)
Anyone remotely interested in this film should try and track down a copy of Cinefantastique magazine covering it. You can't miss it, there's a beautiful painting of the Cygnus on the cover. THe original design for the Palomino looked more like the Star Wars Corellian Corvette.
I loved the music, fit the sequence perfectly.
I hate the meteor scene, seeing such a beautiful ship. Never understood how they could be going faster than the Cygnus which had its rockets blazing.
Great Effects! Incredible miniatures/photography.Top notch.
There's never been another ship like it.
THIS IS GREAT!
Thank you!
Nice i actually think i want to buy that movie again it was actually quite good compared to its age.
Meanwhile... Interstellar ( 2014 ) goes like: _"Hold my beer"_ and EHT ( 11.04.2019 ) pretty much confirmed the prediction of Interstellars design by showing the first picture of a black hole resembling that.
love to see this content redone in 1080
Me too! It's on my Bucketlist!
One my favorite movies.
Still waiting for the remake cmon disney
spectacular soundtrack
basically the music just kept repeating itself tepetively.
You know, having never have watched the whole film... watching it this way, makes me finally understand the film. It's basically Towering Inferno meets Titanic in Space. The whole thing makes sense to me now.
A LOT better than CGI !!
Love the movie, love the music.
I remember this movie when i was a kid and loved it! I have it on dvd and wathch it with my kids, they think its kinda corny, oh well great tribut anyways love it!!
That's the thing about movies that end like this one. I want to know what they found on that planet!
I have the comic. It finishes with the crew surviving and comming out of the black hole into space again and just finishes there.
