Making an Awesome Spider Display
HTML-код

- After properly pinning and preserving a spider specimen the next step is to create an awesome display case so you can show it off to your friends and family. In this video I describe the tools and techniques needed to make a display case for what I believe is a large male Carolina wolf spider. I get some help from my crafty sister who was kind enough to help and make this happen.

Beckies' Insect Craft Corner.
id actually watch the craft corner lol
Thanks Hipster!
As much as it sucks you lost this lil guy, this is really cool! This way you can fondly remember and look back at him :)
My point exactly!
Before you pin it you can cut the abdomen and carapace and clean out the stuff with a tips. Then stuff it with cotton and it will keep the abdomen looking realistic.
Is doing this anytime before display okay, or does it have to be done well they're still fresh?
@@MagentaMauve while fresh.
Jason, I would hope that those who get to see your Wolf Spider display would also get the opportunity to see your previous videos of him. Boy, isn't that the concern here, breaking any part of his body in the process? Was glad to hear of your waiting about three weeks to work with him in the displaying process. Didn't know to do that. Your sister, Becky, was truly grand in her working with the spider and the display case. Wow, to think such is possible for others to enjoy and learn from is more than imagined.
This was a cool idea. I would watch more craft corner.
fun fact, if a spider is getting hungry it's abdomen also shrinks, so he now looks like a pretty hungry spider
You did a good job with that spider
It was a lot of work, but it is one of my most prized possessions! :)
Really enjoyed the video , and yes you may need to to add your sisters new channel becky's insect craft . Happy New year to every one .
Thanks Raymond. Happy New Year to you too!
THANK YOU FOR THE INFO
Your welcome glad you enjoyed it.
Pretty cool, my 6yo enjoyed it too.
awesome glad to hear they enjoyed it! :)
Interesting story and show. Best wishes!
Very awesome 😊
I made one out of my emperor scorpion shed and rose hair tarantula shed 🦂🕷. Cool video insect hunter!
Thanks for the advise!Next vide can u do a praying mantis care video plz!
Insect Collecter I would love to do a mantis care video. When I find one this next summer I will do what I can to raise one hopefully!
That would be cool.
How did it hold up over a year? Great vid by the way, hockey puck case. Genius
It has held up pretty good, but the abdomen went pretty flat. Send me an email theinsecthunter@gmail.com and I can send you a photo if you like.
its looks nice
can you search for stick insects
: )
Chira essi 2 I will do what I can, but even in Texas I had a hard time finding stick insects. I have only seen one alive in the wild and it was awesome! I will keep my eyes peeled though.
Insect Hunter are there walking stick in Virginia?
Hey, thanks for your content! I have a question, won't the spider curl up again after removing the pins? Sorry, but I'm new to this.
Thanks from Brazil!
Love insects
You probably don't recall, but I once mentioned that you can inject alcohol into the abdomen and other soft parts to get them to plump out and look more natural.
Yeah I forgot about that Brian! Perhaps next time I will try doing it that way. How are things down in Texas? Still at TAMU?
Found a spider out in the backyard and i am debating on whether or not I should trap it. I still need to buy some entomology pins though , before I do that.
yeah if you have the time and want to learn spiders can be so fascinating and fun to show off to people.
*Real Or Fake spider?*
Fa him it was totally real! Did you watch the video where I handled it alive with my bare hands?
Nice!
We used to have lots of huntsman spiders here in Bangladesh
Interesting
I wonder if there is some sort of epoxy or similar that you could pour in there to forever preserve it. I know it can be done as I have a very old specimen of a scorpion preserved in an epoxy like solid. But most would get hot and mabye crack. hmmmm
yeah I am not sure. I am looking into other ways to preserve my trophies.
That looks pretty cool!
Yeah I was not expecting it to turn out so well. Hopefully it lasts a while. I will put it in my new work office to show off to folks! :)
Is it a wolf spider it looks like one I have preserved black widow female and a brown recluse spider :D
Yeah it is definitely a wolf spider and a big one. I have had multiple spider experts confirm this. Thanks for watching.
Heyy I'm a new subscriber and I just started getting into preservation for display. I wanted to ask you a question, how do you prepare a freshly dead house spider before pinning? Do I let it dehydrate first and then rehydrate it later for pinning or is there any other better method? I'd really appreciate it if you could spare some time to answer

Becky’s Insect Craft Corner please 👏:)
How do I prevent the abdomen from deflating
How does the spider not decay?
Any idea how to stop the abdomen from deflating?
Kenneth Boynton yes make an incision on the underside of the abdomen and then stuff with cotton. I just don’t have the patience or gentle hands to do it in my opinion, but that’s how you do it!
@@InsectHunter Thanks.
Hey! Great video! Is it necessary to preserve arachnids in alcohol? One of my mature male Tarantula died so i want to make a dry display. But i also want to preserve him for a long time.
Sorry for the late response. With the corona virus I was not allowed in the office for quite a while. I would use the techniques you saw in this video and the one about pinning the wolf spider. The key thing that will be a challenge for you i dissecting the abdomen by cutting it ventrally, ripping out the guts and then restuffing with cotton. Otherwise it eventually "deflates" or gets real dry.
Insect Craft Corner!!
Ha ha good to hear Drew I will be keeping track and keep Becky on the speed dial haha :)
:)
I have a spider here but I'm not sure how to do taxidermy with it. It's the size of my thumb and recently died. Do I have to do anything special before I put it in a case?
Yeah for the most part you don't have to do much. If you want it to look the best possible you can cut the ventral side of the abdomen and remove the guts and stuff with cotton so it doesn't collapse. This is usually done for larger specimens, but is a lot of work and you need to have a surgeons hands to do it right. If it has been dead for a long time and the body doesnt feel flexible you may want to soften it up. This video shows you how: ruclips.net/video/mKVlkthwq30/видео.html
@@InsectHunter ok thank you so much!
That spider is poisonous
I think that’s a giant wolf spider. They aren’t poisonous or fatal but they can bite.
Im your 100th like
Awesome! Thanks for checking in!
@@InsectHunterand its really cool by the way
TheBomb3421 thanks. Please check out my most recent video for a chance to win an insect hunter T shirt!
why not superglue it would look a lot cleaner then with HOTGLUE
Definitely a better idea.
u should put some bugs in resin
I have been thinking about doing it, but just haven't had the time with all the preparation for the new job.
Insect Hunter if u get time it works really well!
Why does the abdomen deflate?
because it dries up over time.
It’s great cause my mom doesn’t allow me pet living spiders
Yeah something like this can work for you.
Is the spider dead?
yes it was dead before any of this process occurred.
Please do not Trap them like that It's Very Rude So pls do not The world is such a cruel place I feel because you like insects you should help us stop insect abuse like this
CosmicGalaxy Disney And More I understand your concerns, but as I have said many times before it is necessary to capture them for educational and research purposes. I do not take pleasure in taking them out of their environment and usually do a catch and release unless I need the specimens for research or an educational program.
Insect Hunter Ok Ty Education It's Ok Just Don't Become One Of those people that pins butterflies and dragonflies on walls XD
@@cosmicgalaxieajpw5537 no offence but this is in no way "insect abuse" as you put it, if they're species aren't dying out then there is nothing wrong with pinning and displaying them, it's actually a very therapeutic hobby for some people, many insects are beautiful and sometimes scary so its okay for some people to want to capture their beauty and characteristics forever, plus it can be used for documenting and education, for example if a species of insect died out then we could still show human kind the preserved insect, if anything I find it quite beautiful to see insects like butterflies pinned up, sure they're dead but thats not the point you should focus on, you should focus on how spectacular and amazing they are and how evolution led them to be what they are today. Sorry if I offended you
Not to mention the life span of lost of these insects is very short as is, even if someone were to kill a butterfly, it is very unlikely it would live for long anyways. But then if you think about it as if it were humans we were doing this to now I am not sure we would think that is okay, but I haven’t seen anything about insect rights lately so I think we are all good
your sister has man hands... I thought they were yours until you said they were your sisters...
Beckies' Insect Craft Corner.
mitch day ha ha I am still in the process of convincing my sister!
