    ABOUT A TO ZEN LIFE
Along my journey to let go of 30 years of clutter, I accidentally became a minimalist and it was life-changing.
Before, I was an emotional hoarder with nothing but the clutter from lost loved ones - and $25,000 of debt - to my name. Now I have a beautiful home in Europe, a happy family, live debt-free, and - best of all - wake up to a life that I’m EXCITED to live every day.
My mission is to help you conquer your clutter and simplify YOUR way to a happier and better life. HERE'S OUR STORY: atozenlife.com/about-a-to-zen...

You drive me crazy when you say to default to the Visual organizer. I’m a lady bug, with health issues and clutter actually hurts my health so no we can’t default to my husbands visual organizing if I want to function. Please stop telling people this, your hurting people. The default needs to depend on everyone in the household and what they can tolerate. There are so many ways to compromise without defaulting to one style.

She isn't hurting people just because what she says doesn't suit you. This isn't about you personally. Walking or running daily is an excellent exercise, and it's understood it applies to those who can walk, not being imposed on those with a broken leg.

The ClutterBug system literally changed my life. I don’t use that term lightly. Life changing. I stopped wasting money on organizational stuff that didn’t work for me and came to terms with being a visual organizer. I’m 100% an “if I can’t se it, it doesn’t exist” person and Cas taught me there’s nothing wrong with that as long as I organize accordingly!

As a a healthcare worker I can tell you, when people are in situation were their clothes needs to be cut off them, we do not pay attention on stains, holes or how good you look in your clothes. If we had done so instead of consentrating in doing first aid, you'd end up dead. There.

There's no way I'd be embarrassed by the quality of my clothing during an emergency. Even speaking of a planned medical appointment: it's polite to make sure you're clean and don't stink (if it isn't part of the problem the doctor needs to know about), but it's not a contest for the best fitting underware or whatever.

    • @shawshanewcomb4061

That’s good to know, I’m sure in a situation that required clothing to be cut off people get all sorts of fluids and stains on their undies and they’re not going to be clean or nice looking anyway! But I do agree with Cass’s overall sentiment about wearing nice underclothes for your own self, if you have the means to.

Same here with having toes that rub holes in the tops of my shoes! Best preventative measure for me has been to put a square of good quality duct tape on the inside of my new (or old) shoes where my toes would rub. Eventually the tape will need to be replaced, but that's cheaper and easier than replacing the shoes!

I am a butterfly. I am working with a professional organizer. Guess what? She is helping me set up visual systems. Now why what she helped me with works when nothing else did makes so much sense. I love your videos. Your honesty and kindness are wonderful. And speech pathologists are absolute heroes. I went to a speech pathologist for 6 years as a child. I’m a Butterfly. I have ADHD, & quickly forget I own something if I can’t see it. That said, I HATE visual clutter, so even though I like my stuff out where I can see it, most of it has a place that it goes back to the moment I no longer need it, & having an automatic place for everything is a big help for my working-memory issues. Part of the reason decluttering appeals to me is that I don’t want to have to keep as much stuff out in the open (or forget I own it if I do need to put things in a closet or drawer).
Also, I agree with Cass that hooks for the back of a door are a GREAT place to hang clothes that are in an “in-between” stage!

  • @victoriam8951

It took me YEARS to figure out my category! I found focusing on the spectrums she talked about instead of the categories themselves to be helpful: Macro vs Micro and Visual vs Hidden. Also, in a video somewhere on her channel she mentioned looking in your house at the areas that are working for you already for a clue. With that tip, I suddenly realized how VISUAL I am (open shelves, hooks, even my yoga mat hangs on the wall), and how I like to have things in particular order much of the time (so some micro tendencies, like folding my underwear and decanting my pantry goods into ball jars). However, hooks are my best friend, and lids are my nemesis. Things should be easy to get out and put away one handed, but it should also be pretty and orderly where possible LOL. For a while I had thought I was a hidden type of person because I don’t like lots of things around, and yet I WANT TO SEE ALL MY STUFF. My solution to that issue is minimalism (which explains why I’ve tended towards minimalism for much of my life naturally). I think there needs to be an additional spectrum in her program that is Simplicity vs Abundance, because I’ve personally experienced it to be a fully separate issue.

To be fair Cas says, even for visual organisers, if everything is visual, nothing is visual. That means if there is too much stuff out there it just feels like a mess. That’s why she always says to declutter first. Also we could be influenced by our upbringing and what we want to be like. Most of us were brought up to think that to be tidy, things need to be put away out of sight.

Yes! I think looking where you lean mostly on the spectrums are more precise than the test. I was super confused, but it turned out I was a bee - the last type I thought I would be, and the one I least identified with at first. Though I find that using the strategies of other types in different areas can be very useful. I like to use ladybug basket strategies to 'shove and hide' my piles, until I can deal with them properly. This doesn't mean I am a ladybug - it just means that I have not set up the ideal organising system yet, but this will do until I get it done. :)

I am a lady bug and my husband is a butterfly. And so are my kids so I do my best to make things visual and macro. If it's something I am mostly in charge of, it's in a cabinet with a macro label. Like I have a bin for medicine instead of organizing everything individually. I love the idea of throwing things in their bin and closing the door!! Haha.

I had to take the Clutterbug quiz 3 times and watch the 'Bug Style' videos to finally determine my Clutterbug style. It rocked my world to finally understand it. My closets were organized to the 'T' but clutter filled my home. I 'needed' to find the 'perfect home' for my stuff. I was buried in visual clutter everywhere until I started decluttering my cupboards and closets which were beautifully organized. They were also packed full, so I was trying to find space where there was no space. I'm a Bee mostly. Often Cass says Bee's have the hardest time letting go because we see use in everything. Like the scrap of pink felt and vintage embroidered ribbon I made a dress out of for my granddaughter's special 'mousey' stuffed toy. The materials were in the 'time will tell' bin. I'm a little bit of all the 'Bugs' depending upon which area I'm organizing. Butterfly for my craft space and Cricket for my office space - they're in the same room. haha. Thanks for this video.

I get how what bug you are depends on which space you're organising. Some things have to be more hidden and more detailed organised for safety or other reasons, even if it's not the easiest style for me. I'm in my element when I can organise my soace for a butter fly or lady bug, depending on what space I'm organising.

Tip for labeling toy bins from a former PreK teacher- if the kiddo/s can't read yet: Use a picture of the kind of toy that goes in the bin and tape it on the front. Visual pictures go a long way- also is a form of matching game for the kiddo/s :) Example: picture of toy car on front of car bin. Have a fab day all :) ❤ Oh and also some toys can be washed and disinfected in the dishwasher (tip especially for babies and toddlers)

Re everything defaulting to the Butterflies: I once read a book about left brain organizers (logical, linear thinkers who love structure) versus right brain (visual, artistic) people. There was a comment along the lines of "Don't bother with a closet for a right brain person, just give them a wall of doorknobs on which to hang their clothing." That really underscored the fact that the path of least resistance (personality/habit-wise) always wins, so make putting things away as easy as possible for the person who struggles the most!

Because of my depression, my entryway has been a massive mess for years now. Now I know I really need to clean it up for having a better life. Thanks for the tip! ❤ Greetings from Hungary.

Maybe the Clutterbug worm is the one who wraps up in a blanket and hides in the corner in overwhelm at the mess... 😬🤭
But like little grubs, the worm can still grow up into a bee, butterfly, etc!

I am a Ladybug, my husband is a Butterfly. We both like broad categories that are easy to put away, but he will forget we have things if they are out of sight. We compromise: We have a bit more on display than I would like in some places, and and in others we use drawers where it's easy to see everything when you open the drawer, so he can see everything at a glance, but can still be easily tucked out of sight. Minimalism makes it al lot easier for us to get along, since there is not too much out in the open to display OR hidden away. :)

I loved this video. I always look at your home and think it is so perfect. Having raised 4 children, I know it does not just HAPPEN. I took Cass’s quiz. I am a Cricket too. It also gave me some insight in my adult children’s styles. I live alone now, happily everything has a home, I never set anything down, I put it away as soon as I’m finished, I have dividers in my drawers, etc. I love showing people how organized my closet and cupboards are….. okay, I’m a show off.

I’m also a cricket and I do the same thing with the clothes. I hang them in the bathroom so I remember to wear them again after I shower. But my father, with whom I share the bathroom, hates it, so he put them with the dirty clothes. We are still working on that and trying to not let it cause conflicts. It’s hard to share space with people who think differently about organization, but you two seem to deal well with it. I’m a minimalist living with two shopping addict hoarders. It’s hard, but we are learning to cohabit in peace.

When I first heard of the system it gave me ladybug but that was because I was tossing things in a drawer or closet because of having too much inventory. As time has gone on I've realized I'm a butterfly with a slight bee tendency. One in one out rule and decluttering makes it a lot easier to determine your type! That underwear thing definitely puts me in the visual organizer box. 😂 That is a good tell.

Now deciding how to make a minimally functional closet perform better and realized that I should take the quiz before doing anything else!! Thank you! Awww, two of my favorite RUclipsrs!!! So, I’ve taken the quiz a couple times but haven’t ever felt like the results were right. Just this morning (seriously) I saw someone else complaining about the same thing, and someone else pointed out that it can help to get the decluttering done first, since the organizing comes after. So I guess there’s no skipping steps 😋 I gotta dig out your decluttering checklists as I restart my aggressive decluttering

One of the things that helped me when I was taking the quiz, was to think of who I was at 5 years old. What did my room look like. I may be the unicorn, but I was not a butterfly even as a child. I hated to have 35 stuffed animals on my bed. I didn’t like a ton of posters on my walls, but rather just a couple that I loved at the moment. Unless I was in a hurry, I wouldn’t have clothes all over or toys, it stressed me out. But, god love me, don’t open my drawers or closet! I was horrible at putting things away neatly. Still am….but now that I know I’m a Ladybug, I have broad categories for my things, and I am organized. As much as I want to be a cricket, I am not and will never be. And that’s ok. Good luck to you on your journey, it is so worth it, and so are you.

I love this video - I had not yet heard of Cass before and I find her approach to categorizing people into different "clutter bugs" fascinating! I took the quiz and ended up being a ladybug, which is very true for me, because I like to have lots of bins to store items, but don't spend too much time on detailed labelling and sorting, because my family will very likely not be able to maintain that kind of system.

I remember that as a kid I was sorting my toys based on categories, sometimes making sub-categories based on what toy series it came from and everything was put into their dedicated shoe boxes [where I store my stuff to this day. My parents were very agains organizers and pro shoe boxes]. For example, I had my big my little pony figurines separated from small my little pony figurines and among those big ones I had a sub category for dress up ponies, that went into a dress up pony bag and the bag into the big pony shoe box and the shoe box into the toy shelf. I guess I was an organization freak cricked since the very beginning of my life 😁

Love the Clutterbug philosophy! ☺ Though I would probably recommend her video on typing yourself or others without the quiz. The basic principle is wether you are leaning more towards details/not detailed, or visual/hidden. It simplifies things a lot.
When I first learned about her theory, I could see myself in every type, so it was difficult to pinpoint. At the time, I was doing some downsizing and decluttering, and I lacked a lot of basic organizing. So often my place was a mess, and my closets stuffed to the brim. My 'strategy' when cleaning was often to 'shove and hide', so I could deal with the spaces one at a time. However, after decluttering and getting some organizing going, I noticed that I was naturally very detailed in my way of organizing. And because my stuff fit my space, and I made a system that utilised the space more efficiently, I kept up that system pretty easy. This points towards a cricket or a bee. I like it to be easy to find, and easy to put away. But I especially need it to be easy to find when needed.
The visual/hidden, I tend to be a bit more mixed. I gravitate towards a relatively minimal style of decorating. Both because it makes it easier to clean, and it does bring an element of calm to the space. But on the other hand, I like to have some things on display to show what brings joy to me. I think I would go insane if I had to live in a room with barely any decoration to make it personal and cozy. 😅 I would never put away appliances I use daily; my counters would feel empty. I have pictures and invitations on the fridge for years. Not a lot, but there is always something. So even though I use baskets strategically, to utilise the space and hide certain things - I lean more to the visual side.
So leaning towards visual and detailed, this put me as a bee. Which is actually the last type I thought I would be. I still use certain strategies from the other types where it makes sense. But I seem to mostly function as a bee. So if you are unsure about the result, try to look at the simplified version, instead of the test. 😊

Took the test and realized that I am a cricket in every room of the house except the sewing room. There I am half cricket and half bee. I have a wall of thread racks and peg boards but then I have drawers and closed bins for everything else. My partner is a butterfly. Sigh. I started in-depth decluttering in the kitchen in March. The kitchen is done - it took two and a half months (so worth it). Now I'm preparing to tackle the laundry/utility room. Rather daunted by trying to create a solution that will work for both of us.

Could you please make a video about how you deal with things like kids homework - books and other resources that need to be purchased. I tend to buy many books and i do not like that because they take up lots of space and need to be recycled at the end of school year, however they are necessary, because they can't be replaced with ebooks. I did buy an e-reader for my son, but there are still many books, worksheets etc that need to be purchased. Also, could you please share some homework tips - like, how much time your kids spend doing their homework, how much time do you spend helping them and (in general) are there any good tips that you could share with busy moms,? I'd call it not being minimal with your time, but spending it efficiently and with as little stress as possible.
