I bought a set of wheels (with AR56 rims) from LightBicycle 5 years ago. Still perfectly true and smooth running. Would not hesitate to buy from them again.
Finally? It's been the trend for years now. It's getting to the point that I am getting sick of hearing about how Chinese brands are actually good. Ywan, welcome to a decade ago.
Former factory race team mechanic and have built many wheels for World Cup and national competition back in the day. Built my own wheels using LB rims for many years. Few years ago started letting them build my wheels and they do it right. High and even tension, properly stress relieved. Just got a set of these Turbo 50, carbon spoke on LB gen 2 hubs. The new hubs are basically DT240 knockoffs and just as nice. Tight, low drag and super light. Mine are 1248g. Aero 111/ GP5000 STR 28c mounted. Fierce winds in California right now and they behave beautifully. Pressure feedback on bars but steady, not wavering or steering back and forth. I feel extra compliance even with just 4mm more width than my last set of wheels. Innovative, precision, great stuff. Last set of western brand wheels was Reynolds ATR and they were garbage. No knurl machined on rear hub (they just forgot), so much seal drag that I couldn't keep the chain on, broken spokes left and right, impossible to mount tires on. I literally threw them in the dumpster. LB on my two CX bikes, TT bike (disc/tri-spoke), 30mm XC race bike, road bike and 30mm IW gravel bike wheels.
@@MarioKurill IMHO, it’s smart to have them built up with hubs you can get parts for. The risky aspect in my mind was the hubs. I train on the road and race gravel.
Just ordered my LB wheelset end of last year - haven't received them yet, but the customer service, communication and build process overview is absolutely exceptional!
I got a pair of Yoeleo SAT C50 DB PRO NxT SL2 for 710€. 50mm deep, 30 wide, 23 intern en 1321 grams. HUNT can't compete and their history with quality does not give them credit. (I have a pair of HUNT wheels and that is definitely not premium.)

Also LB were the 1st to release a SUPER WIDE ARRO GRAVEL wheelset +1 year before ZIPP! The WG44 & just recently the crazy WG55: 32 INTERNAL & 40mm EXTERNAL!
3 pairs of LIGHTBICYCLE wheels, amazing wheels!! 56,5mm Falcon Pro for my VENGE, 45mm Falcon for my Gravel/All Roads Kona & even a unique set of TRACK WHEELS WITH CARBON SPOKES!!
Would love to see a comparison between the best Chinese wheels vs the best western wheels as stated in the title. For example some CRW, yoleo, no. 6 wheels vs reserves, roval, enve etc But, nice start.
I've been riding my Lightbicycle wheel set for the past 2 years and they're absolutely a blast!. Also the customer support from Lightbicycle was quick and solved a mistake I made in my order in no time without charging me more.
I have Hunt Limitless Gravel with coated Ceramic Speed bearings. They are amazing wheels! For my Sworks SL8 road bike, I went with Farsports EVOs with carbon blades and ceramic speed bearings. Incredible road wheels.
I’m considering the Farsports EVO wheels for my bike. How do you find their performance in terms of speed, stability, and durability? Would you recommend them overall?”
I have a few light bicycles wheels and so do multiple of my friends. All have been excellent. Their wheel build quality is beyond reproach. Tension is spot on as is roundness, dish, and trueness. They even hold up under big riders. I am 270ish lbs and have about 10k miles on my road set
I've had Scribes on the road bike, for last 4 years had a warranty issue and they sent a new pair within a week, which was fantastic customer service . However they weren't doing any carbon gravel at the end of last year so got a pair of Elite Marvel Gravel G36 for the gravel bike and first impressions are very strong for them (they have a similar business model as light speed). At the end of the day it's great to have the choice, and hopefully the market is big enough so we can continue to have that choice.
@@timmayt1643 I think that it’s a fast rolling bombproof wheelset. All in - Less than half the price of Enve and $1K less than CK or Reserve. Quite pleased.
Getting a pair of Nextie ARX 39/44 laced to Erase road hubs with CX ray spokes from my local wheel builder soon. Cutting the cost on the rims by a huge margin while still getting a hand-build wheelset. Best of both worlds!
I've got five sets of Light Bicycle wheels (one road, one gravel, two mountain bike, and one fat bike), three of which were built by them (the other two date from before they offered the service). I'll never buy anything else, since long gone are the days of being able to say you could pay a premium to get the ultimate in performance. Quite simply, they have let word of mouth replace a massive advertising budget and pro sponsorships, and then pass those cost savings onto the consumer. I could not be happier.
I have a set of Light Bicycle Falcon Pro rim brake rims that I custom built with DT Swiss 240 hubs and Sapim spokes. Very happy with how they turned out. The only complaint I had was that their dimensions were not well described. The ERD was off by 10mm and caused me to have to buy all new spokes to ensure proper nipple seating. Also, while the width was described as 28mm, the width at the brake pad is actually 30mm. Unless you know what you’re looking at with their marketing materials, you could easily make the mistakes I made buying from LB. That being said, I’d order from them again. They have excellent customer support that seems to care about their brand.
im using ryet sl50d carbon wheelset from china and got it for $430. raced it several times and using it for 8 months now. still doing good and fine without encountering any issues. cade media already reviewed it tho they encountered issues with the wheelset but lexon/ryet said they fixed it already and they offer 2 year replacement warranty
Oooff...I was hoping that the secret of these great Chinese wheels will be secret for a while longer. But no, the rabbit is now out of the hat! My last western purchase for a Roval wheelset 5 years ago. The price of that alone could have paid for at least 2 wheelsets of far better Chinese wheelsets today. I have been buying Chinese wheelsets for the past 3 years (CRW, Farports, 8Lien) and they are absolutely fantastic! Well, either the western brands find a leap in technology/price or just hope that the coverage of Chinese wheels will ramp up the demand and therefore their price. Great video! Thanks for finally making one about Chinese wheels!
Very interesing. I thought the lack of eastern brands many raised further to your latest wind tunnel test was a fair point. However for me the main hesitation point would be reliability and accountability.
LB without a doubt. Not just by the price, but the rim style (in this case). Since I'm more into rim-brake based stuff, I would have to pick different model. I'm thinking about something 40 mm deep rims, so I could find use for my old hubs and lace my yet another set of wheels.
I have a pair of LightBicycle road wheels from 2014! At the time everyone thought I was crazy to ride them. They were 45mm, as aero as anything at the time, and tubeless in 2014 was quite the outlier! I now mostly MTB and just ordered from Nobl for a MTB wheelset, welp LightBicycle is kind of a partner with Nobl. Noble use LightBicycle produced rims and are also the North America service hub.
Have two pairs of Elite’s and for the money they are brilliant. Are they top spec? Nope, but the prices were 650.- ( with promotion ) and 1050.- full price, 35 and 50 deep wheels. Both gravel wheels. Don’t see the need to pay 30-40% more for “local” brand. Also, “cheap” ENVE models are not made in US and they have been open about it. ✌️Good job RoadCC.
I own a set of one of their Pro series. Bulletproof, and the clearcoat finish is nice. Light Bicycle or Wheelsfar is probably the way forward if you want quality and customization.
Excellent material!! LB are the best manufacturer bicycle wheels in China. The customizing on the website is a playground, and customer service via email is super fast.
I'd buy those LB wheels just for the wavy look 😂. More seriously, I know people who've been running LB wheels for over 10 years. In the early days the wheels just showed up at their house in a basic box with minimal packaging after waiting two months. But they've been solid and some have even sold them for not much less than they paid. There is always a young racer looking for light carbon race day wheels.
Hunt Wheels are OEM rebranded chinese wheelset. They are the first companies that went direct to china to buy Chinese oem wheels and put their name/logo on it. You just compared Chinese vs. Chinese. Unlike other western brands that are made in 'china' but they actually R&D their own stuff and source out production in China.
The Sub50 was designed in house - in fact we’ve cycled with the engineers who definitely spend the majority of their time designing wheels and not stickers
For my first carbon wheels I went with Superteam--one set for gravel, and a 55 deep for my road bike. Love both sets, but tbh I'm not sure the performance improvement is all that remarkable compared to my Shimano alu wheels. Though aesthetically, they rock :)
I have a set of light bicycle wheels they are great (I have the AR56 with bitex hubs and they are about half the cost again of the ones you tested but still great performance. The main reason they are cheaper is sadly the workers in china are not paid as well as UK workers at hunt.
Larger internal width isn't a win if it means you need to downsize your tires to fit on your bike. I had to do just this, as my 24mm Hunt wheels meant that my 40mm tires would not fit between my gravel bike stays (well, there was about 1/2mm clearance) and I had to size down to 35mm tires to allow for mud clearance. I still love the wheels, but I did prefer the larger tires also.
I have (2) Chinese wheelsets from Superteam for a FRACTION of the cost of those "name brands" usually made IN China !!! Both have been with me for over 5 years and have been bombproof!!! So spend your money how you like, if certain brand names are important to you , cool. But i have better to spend my money on that "labels"
I have a 1 of 1 custom pair of LightBicycle wheels. They have my initials on them. Customized them from the ground up. Western companies don’t offer that & if they did you’d be paying the price of a new carbon race bike for the effort. Love my wheels. They accelerate incredibly fast.
Welcome to the next revolution for cycling.! Carbon wheels for the masses.! This will spark the beginning of the end for overpriced and ridiculously expensive western brands.! Lots of awesome factories in china right now produce very high quality own brands which competes with the best western brands… Lun, superteam, winspace, yoleo, elitewheels, ican etc... This is the best time to have carbon wheels..! Awesome
Three pairs of LB rims, all flawless. Prefer them to a set of cheap Elites I own. Not noticeably worse than my two sets of ENVE wheels. I definitely prefer having a hooked rim over hookless. Have not needed to use warranty so cannot comment on that, but all communication has been good so far.
for those in UK, maybe Hunt is better option because just for 300 GBP more, you get easier access to warranty. But anywhere else, LightBicycle is a better option.
Chinese wheelsets are so good that western brands will need to differentiate themselves through incredible customer service and warranty policies. The products themselves are indistinguishable in quality
Maybe I missed it but here are a couple of things that I would have liked to have seen as a wheel builder. I wish they had put these wheels in a truing stand and checked the consistency of the tensioning of the spokes. What kind of variation is there? That will help you predict how many miles before a broken spoke. Additionally, did we get any details about nipple material? My first question when there is a very light set of wheels is are the nipples on the rear drive side made of aluminum or brass? That makes a big difference. Finally, will those Asian sourced DT Swiss hubs be covered by DT Swiss warranty? There's a lot of knockoff DT Swiss material coming out of Asia. I use a lot of Asian sourced rims in my builds. The carbon rims are always quality. But I refuse to build with anything but DT Swiss or Sapim hardware.
My heart wants to buy from western brands, but your excellent comparison makes it tougher. Western brands typically do the innovating but at what price?
Ive ridden a lot of LBs on mtb and road (road on yoleo rigth now 800 for a flawless setup). Theyre great. Some people will continue to buy zipp because they can and want the same thing as pros.
Rims are actually a bit boring. If it comes in the right shape with a good layup, there's not much in the comparison. Hubs are more interesting. DT will sell you a 180 front hub for $400. Since the various DT patents have expired, you can find hubs in a similar weight class, dimensions, and aesthetics for far less on AE. No one's put them through the paces.
Well, Hunt are *not* having a good day today, that's for sure... Four sets of Farsports wheels here (2 road, gravel and mtb), and a new Yoeleo road set on the way. Zero issues with any of them, with the oldest road set at 4 years and at least 30k km. There's just no way I would pay 2-3K for a western brand name wheelset. The value is just not there.
Impending import tax here in the US will essentially cut off demand for the Chinese manufactured wheels....at least IMO. I've been super happy with my Hunts and they even replaced one after a crash (not of my fault). Will be interesting to watch this unfold. Shimano and SRAM are next on the asia hit list too......
All companies are on the asia hit list. It would have been interesting to hear how LightBicycle were able to afford financing for their very own factory, if it was like most other industries where Chinese government is trying to squash western competition by subsidizing capital so that their end product prices are unfairly lower than western brands. I dislike Trump and didn't ever vote for him, but I'm hoping tariffs have a chance to even the playing field. But harsh reality is that these tariffs are probably about 15-20 years too late to have an effect other than an ever escalating trade war, since China has been allowed to grow too economically powerful on these unfair trade practices to have the chance anymore to be effective. Because in this upcoming trade war, the US and European consumer is going to cave in first, revolting at the price increase (inflation) of all those chinese everyday products they have been purchasing for years.
@Jamie. Love you dude. but can you please stop lumping Taiwan under the China name? They are two separate sovereign states. Say Taiwan, and China, instead of just "China" as a catch all.
Got a wheel set build in germany i think with made in china rim 24x700c hooked 31mm outer with, dt Swiss 240 hubs und spokes at a bit 1400g for about 900€ so why go for a chinese one? Just european wheel with out that Marketing...
I think any wheels worth more than a complete bike is an obvious rip off . The only way I would ever consider carbon wheels they got to be affordable!! FYI my old vector s are only 1550g so I don't see the need ATM
We were talking about the ones we ordered a few years ago when we said this, our fault for not clicking the box at checkout, all LB rims are available with drainage holes

Got two sets of Elite Wheels for under $1000 USD Both are gravel wheels @ about 1550 grams a set.
Western brands are to expensive and crap marketing claiming to make you faster
Why would you buy Chinese carbon wheels either if you don't believe deep section carbon wheels make you faster?
My heart wants to buy from western brands, but your excellent comparison makes it tougher. Western brands typically do the innovating but at what price?
"I'm your Turbo lover, tell me there no other!" 😅
Ive ridden a lot of LBs on mtb and road (road on yoleo rigth now 800 for a flawless setup). Theyre great. Some people will continue to buy zipp because they can and want the same thing as pros.
and about the drag ?
Instant click. Got me on the title. Bit sad with the limited range that was compared
Pofeng carbon spoke wheels best bang for the buck by far....
You compared the lesser Chinese brand. Should looked at Far Sports and the fastest up and coming Craft Racing Wheels.
I feel like we need an emergency Nero show episode
Great video. Actually voicing an opinion and comparison with the elephant in the room.

Never ever will I ever understand hookless rims #dontmakesense ✌️
campy bora ultra wto 45 disc is the best !!!
Hunt are having a better day than most western brands! - there's some serious headaches coming!
Basically spending 25% more on Hunts for better warranty services but slightly worse wheels.
Hunt are about as western as a Chinese hotpot
Hunt is also made by some OEM in China. You are really paying Hunt for lifetime crash replacement and branding.
best western road wheel probably be enve 4.5 though
I am hoping the days that people are spending $4000 on a frameset will be gone soon.
Cool comparison, thanks! And those Light Bicycle wheels are still very far from the top chinese carbon wheels (CRW, Farsports EVO S, etc...)
'The best' is being stretched well beyond its definition here.
group ride now probably > 60% chinese brand dtc wheels.. someone shows up in hookless zipps my first thought is don't ride behind them
Impending import tax here in the US will essentially cut off demand for the Chinese manufactured wheels....at least IMO. I've been super happy with my Hunts and they even replaced one after a crash (not of my fault). Will be interesting to watch this unfold. Shimano and SRAM are next on the asia hit list too......
US market is already very small.
Because in this upcoming trade war, the US and European consumer is going to cave in first, revolting at the price increase (inflation) of all those chinese everyday products they have been purchasing for years.
never heard this brand in China, lol
24k views in 11hr-i wonder why
Need chapters.
Hookless for the Hunts a hard pass for me.
Hi Neroshow
@Jamie. Love you dude. but can you please stop lumping Taiwan under the China name? They are two separate sovereign states. Say Taiwan, and China, instead of just "China" as a catch all.
but.. they're all made in..... wait a minute...
They are essentially both chinese brands...
Hunt is Just a chinies wheels with a british Sticker
Got a wheel set build in germany i think with made in china rim 24x700c hooked 31mm outer with, dt Swiss 240 hubs und spokes at a bit 1400g for about 900€ so why go for a chinese one? Just european wheel with out that Marketing...
Hopefully
No one stop you buy cheaper stuff, but when buying Chinese stuff means supporting Chinese product, and most importantly betraying your heart
I think any wheels worth more than a complete bike is an obvious rip off . The only way I would ever consider carbon wheels they got to be affordable!! FYI my old vector s are only 1550g so I don't see the need ATM
are you serious it have no drainage hole? that will be big failure.
We were talking about the ones we ordered a few years ago when we said this, our fault for not clicking the box at checkout, all LB rims are available with drainage holes
